Yesterday’s U.S. Senate vote on the Pain-Capable Child Protection Act was a milestone in the fight to protect life.

It was also the culmination of years of work by Susan B. Anthony List and our allies. Marjorie led a press conference yesterday morning before the vote with many of these allies in addition to the bill sponsor, Senator Lindsey Graham -check out the great picture below.
Later this week, we’ll give you an opportunity to contact your Senators about this important vote. It was the first time the Senate has voted on a bill to protect an entire class of children. It is not perfect legislation, but it does challenge a major premise of Roe v. Wade.
While we did not get the 60 votes needed to override a Democrat-led filibuster, we secured a majority –54 – votes, including three democrats who chose pro-life principle over party.  
This means that a majority of the House and Senate have both voted in favor of ending late-term abortions. This is what progress looks like!
Here’s another example of progress. Yesterday, Marjorie introduced Micah Pickering, a happy, healthy 3 year old, to Senators just before they went onto the Senate floor to vote. Micah, who was born at 20 weeks fetal age, is the face of the 18,000 lives who could be saved by the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. He was the same boy at 22 weeks that he is now, just older.

The fight is certainly not over. Your SBA List is working hard to keep this common sense, compassionate legislation a defining issue of the 2016 campaign and looks forward to electing a pro-life president who could sign this bill into law. We are also working as Congress advances several other pro-life bills and addresses the issue of taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider.

Senate vote on Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act “not a defeat, but a stepping stone towards victory”By Dave Andrusko

Yesterday 42 United States senators—40 Democrats and two Republicans—voted against advancing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. At his snarky best, Senator Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) dismissed the attempt to make the Senate actually vote on H.R. 36 as a “show vote designed to honor the political wish lists of extremists.” Let’s consider for a moment what actually happened yesterday and what it may portend.

First, while 54 senators (51 Republicans and three Democrats) voted to take the bill up for debate, 60 votes were required. That’s the way the Senate now works on “controversial” legislation.

What was it that we “extremists” wanted the Senate to vote on? What “extreme” legislation did H.R. 36 represent?

Here’s how Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the chief Senate sponsor of the legislation, characterized the Senate’s action (or inaction) in a statement issued Tuesday:

“America is at her best when she’s standing up for the least among us,” said Graham. “Even though we were not successful, this votes marks an important milestone when it comes to protecting the unborn. We took the first vote in the Senate and were able to see where every Senator stands. Today, the battle begins working to bring more supporters to our cause.

“There are only seven countries that allow wholesale abortions at the 20-week period including China and North Korea,” said Graham. “We should no longer be part of that club.”

At the age of 20 weeks or five months post-fertilization, scientific evidence tells us an unborn child can feel pain. Pain medication is administered directly to the unborn child in second-trimester fetal surgery, in addition to anesthesia. The unborn child shows physical, chemical, brain and stress responses demonstrating pain at this stage of development.

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act is based on science, has overwhelming public support, and is necessary to protect unborn children from painful, and untimely deaths.

But when something that ought to have been moved along for a vote doesn’t, it’s easy to be disheartened. That is why Sen. Graham’s last paragraph is so important to remember:

“I view today’s vote as the start of a journey, much like the one we used to pass the Unborn Victims of Violence Act and the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban into law,” concluded Graham. “The sooner this legislation becomes law, the better. We are on the right side of history.”

Passing legislation that is supported by the American people will nonetheless always be tough sledding when pro-abortion members of Congress are extremists times ten on abortion. But it can be done, it has been done, and it will be done again.

Consider the very commonsensical parameters of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. It extends general protection to unborn children who are at least 20 weeks beyond fertilization (which is equivalent to 22 weeks of pregnancy — about the start of the sixth month).

Prayers at abortion victims gravesite Leadership Resources Here >>On Saturday, September 12, 2015, Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, Priests for Life and the Pro-Life Action League will co-sponsor the third annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children, calling on pro-life Americans to honor the gravesites of our aborted brothers and sisters.

Solemn prayer vigils will be conducted at these gravesites, of which there are 47 across the United States, as well as at dozens of other sites dedicated in memory of aborted children.

Why Visit the Gravesites of the Aborted Unborn?

When people become truly aware of the reality of abortion, they can more easily cut through the lies by which some try to justify it, and the natural apathy to which human nature is inclined. Even pro-life people are thrust into a higher level of commitment and activism.

Touching this reality happens in various ways: hearing a vivid description of the procedure, seeing diagrams of it or images of aborted children, hearing a woman’s personal testimony of regret over her abortion.

This impact, whereby abortion no longer remains an abstraction, can be brought to an even more profound level when experienced during an event, such as the funeral for an aborted baby.

Tens of thousands of these children have been retrieved and buried at gravesites across our country. The stories of how they were killed, how they were found, and how they were buried, along with the pictures and videos that document those events, are powerful tools to awaken the consciences of our fellow citizens.

But while a funeral and burial for an aborted baby may be a relatively rare event, the opportunity to visit the burial places and recall how those children got there does not have to be rare—in fact, it shouldn’t be.

Pro-lifers should be visiting these gravesites—and other memorial sites dedicated to aborted babies—as a regular part of their pro-life witness. That’s what the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children is all about.

An Annual Event—and More

The first National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children was held in September 2013 on the 25th anniversay of the solemn burial of the earthly remains of some 1,500 abortion victims in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Over 100 memorial services were held across the United States, and it was clear this should become an annual event.

The Day of Remembrance will be held annually on the second Saturday in September. Dates for upcoming Days of Remembrance are as follows:

  • September 12, 2015
  • September 10, 2016
  • September 9, 2017
  • September 8, 2018

Abortion Survivors Will Headline Hearing Next Week on Planned Parenthood Selling Aborted Babies

LifeNews.com has learned that two abortion survivors will headline the House Judiciary Committee meeting and exposes the horrors of the abortion industry from their first-hand experience.

On Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., the House Judiciary Committee will hold its first hearing in a series of hearings titled, “Planned Parenthood Exposed: Examining the Horrific Abortion Practices at the Nation’s Largest Abortion Provider.” The hearings will examine the abortion practices of Planned Parenthood, which has been the subject of an ongoing House Judiciary Committee investigation into the organization’s practices.

When the panel meets, the will hear from abortion survivors Melissa Ohden and Gianna Jessen.

Ohden is a LifeNews.com writer and a nationally-recognized speaker. Ohden’s mother had an abortion to end her eight month-old child’s life, but Melissa miraculously lived.

Her mother was in college and 19-years-old with no father to support her when she decided to terminate her unborn child with a saline abortion. This type of abortion involves injecting a toxic saline solution into the amniotic fluids surrounding the pre-born baby in the womb, scalding it to death from the outside in.

Melissa soaked in the solution of chemicals for five days until labor was induced and she was thought to be dead. A nurse happened to hear her muffled cry, and luckily Melissa’s biological parents chose to give her up for adoption instead.

“My parents saw the inherent beauty that existed in me. I want everyone to see that. If we look behind words, if we look behind numbers, this is what abortion looks like. This is what tens of millions of other children would look like . . . if only they were given the opportunity to live,” Ohden has said.

To those who follow abortion issues closely, the name Gianna Jessen is familiar. Over the years she has been a tremendous speaker about the value of life. As a survivor of abortion, Gianna knows what she is talking about — and her personal story is one that has inspired countless people and opened the eyes of many to how abortion involves the destruction of human life and isn’t something that just happens to a bunch of cells.

Gianna speaks about how she started suffering from cerebral palsy as a result of being starved of oxygen while she fought to stay alive in her mother’s womb. She now, however, sees this condition as a gift and asks: “If abortion is about women’s rights, then what were mine? There was not a radical feminist standing up and yelling about how my rights were being violated that day; in fact, my life was being snuffed out in the name of women’s rights.”

Despite her adopted mother hearing from doctors that Gianna “will never be anything” she is now able to live an extraordinary life.

The purpose of Wednesday’s hearing will be to hear from experts on the issues surrounding the alleged acts of Planned Parenthood. The hearing will examine details of late-term abortions, what is involved in altering an abortion in order to harvest fetal organs, and a history of the laws that protect, or fail to protect, the unborn from these barbaric practices.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, a pro-life Republican from Virginia, talked about what will take place at the hearing.

“Planned Parenthood and its executives must answer for the alleged atrocities brought to light in the videos by the Center for Medical Progress. For the past two months, the House Judiciary Committee has been investigating the alleged acts of Planned Parenthood and its affiliates, and now the American people will have a chance to understand just how horrific these practices are to the unborn,” he said.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to question a panel of experts on this issue in order to ascertain how Planned Parenthood may have violated federal laws in the course of its alleged practices, and the atrocities associated with altering abortions in order to obtain the body parts of fetuses,” Congressman Goodlatte continued. “This hearing is the next step in the Committee’s ongoing investigation into Planned Parenthood and part of the Committee’s commitment to fighting for the rights of the unborn.”

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives is planning a vote on legislation in a couple weeks that would de-fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business. The two votes would follow one the Senate had weeks ago, which saw Senate Democrats filibuster and block legislation to revoke $550 million in taxpayer funding. The Senate is expected to vote soon on a second attempt to de-fund Planned Parenthood.

The Center for Medical Progress released a new video this week — the 9th in its series of videos catching the Planned Parenthood abortion business selling aborted babies and their body parts. This latest video catches a Planned Parenthood medical director discussing how the abortion company sells fully intact aborted babies — including one who “just fell out” of the womb.

Previously, the Center for Medical Progress released a supplemental video that sheds more light on the profit Planned Parenthood makes associated with the ale of aborted babies and their body parts.

On Friday, the Center for Medical Progress released the full, uncut video of the conversation between undercover investigators form CMP and top officials with StemExpress, which buys aborted babies and their body parts from Planned Parenthood. The full footage is of a shorter video that summarized the meetings earlier this week.

Also, two committees in the House of Representatives have already launched investigations of Planned Parenthood. One committee is looking into whether or not the abortion business is breaking federal law by altering abortion procedures to better obtain aborted baby body parts for sale. Another committee, among other things, is investigating the Obama administration and whether there is any connection between it and the abortion giant.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform wants to know if the Obama administration, via the Department of Health and Human Services, provided any federal grants to Planned Parenthood that ultimately went to pay for the sales of aborted baby body parts and if they were used by Planned Parenthood to “support transactions involving fetal tissue.”

The expose’ videos catching Planned Parenthood officials selling the body parts of aborted babies have shocked the nation. Here is a list of all nine:

  • In the first video: Dr. Deborah Nucatola of Planned Parenthood commented on baby-crushing: “We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact.”
  • In the second video: Planned Parenthood’s Dr. Mary Gatter joked, “I want a Lamborghini” as she negotiated the best price for baby parts.
  • In the third video: Holly O’Donnell, a former Stem Express employee who worked inside a Planned Parenthood clinic, detailed first-hand the unspeakable atrocities and how she fainted in horror over handling baby legs.
  • In the fourth video: Planned Parenthood’s Dr. Savita Ginde stated, “We don’t want to do just a flat-fee (per baby) of like, $200. A per-item thing works a little better, just because we can see how much we can get out of it.” She also laughed while looking at a plate of fetal kidneys that were “good to go.”
  • In the fifth video: Melissa Farrell of Planned Parenthood-Gulf Coast in Houston boasted of Planned Parenthood’s skill in obtaining “intact fetal cadavers” and how her “research” department “contributes so much to the bottom line of our organization here, you know we’re one of the largest affiliates, our Research Department is the largest in the United States.”
  • In the sixth video: Holly O’Donnell described technicians taking fetal parts without patient consent: “There were times when they would just take what they wanted. And these mothers don’t know. And there’s no way they would know.”
  • In the seventh and perhaps most disturbing video: Holly O’Donnell described the harvesting, or “procurement,” of organs from a nearly intact late-term fetus aborted at Planned Parenthood Mar Monte’s Alameda clinic in San Jose, CA. “‘You want to see something kind of cool,’” O’Donnell says her supervisor asked her. “And she just taps the heart, and it starts beating. And I’m sitting here and I’m looking at this fetus, and its heart is beating, and I don’t know what to think.”
  • In the eighth video: StemExpress CEO Cate Dyer admits Planned Parenthood sells “a lot of” fully intact aborted babies.
  • The 9th video: catches a Planned Parenthood medical director discussing how the abortion company sells fully intact aborted babies — including one who “just fell out” of the womb.

SIGN THE PETITION! Congress Must Investigate Planned Parenthood for Selling Aborted Baby Parts

So far, 12 states have responded to the Planned Parenthood videos and launched investigations into their abortion and organ harvesting business including South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Kansas, Missouri, Arizona, Indiana, Ohio, Georgia, Texas and Louisiana. The district attorney in Houston Texas is also investigating after the Houston-based Planned Parenthood abortion facility was caught selling aborted babies.

Congress has expanded its investigation into the Planned Parenthood abortion business and five states have revoked taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood’s abortion business, including Utah, Arkansas, Alabama, New Hampshire and Louisiana and Iowa’s governor has ordered a review of Planned Parenthood funding.

The full, unedited videos have confirmed that revelations that some aborted baby remains sold by Planned Parenthood go to biotech companies for the purpose of creating “humanized” mice. Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood has been exposed as having sold body parts from aborted babies for as much as 15 years.

The federal law that technically prohibits the sale of aborted babies and their body parts was written by a pro-abortion Congressman decades ago and essentially spells out a process by which sellers of aborted baby body parts can meet certain criteria that allows the sales to be legal. That’s why a Colorado congressman has introduced legislation to totally ban the sales of aborted baby body parts.

Ask Your Representative to Co-Sponsor H.R. 3251 against Biased “Advance Care Planning” Under Medicare

Background:

During the debate over the enactment of Obamacare, there was considerable controversy over paying Medicare health care providers to conduct “advance care planning,” which counsels patients on deciding whether to choose or reject life-preserving medical treatment (and even food and fluids) and advising on legal documents implementing that decision.  That provision was taken out of the ultimately enacted law because of an outcry by those who feared it would be used to limit health care spending by persuading  people to agree to forego life-saving treatments.  Now, the Obama Administration is proposing to use executive power to revive it as a regulation to take effect January 1, 2016.

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) has introduced a bill, H.R. 3251, to prevent the Administration from implementing new Medicare payments for “advance care planning” sessions, which substantial evidence shows are in most cases likely to “nudge” seniors to accept denial of life-preserving care and medically assisted provision of food and fluids.

Talking Points

  • If advance care planning provided truly informed consent for decisions about medical treatment it would be laudable. It is good to help people to prepare advance directives, like NRLC’s Will to Live, that set forth treatment decisions based on what are genuinely their own values and preferences.
  • In practice, however, advance care planning is typically less about discovering and applying patients’ own wishes than about pushing them to accept premature death.
  • Many “decision aids” in widespread use are suffused with vivid, emotional, and distorted presentations designed to persuade individuals to forego life-preserving medical treatment.
  • Both private insurers and the government seek to constrain health care spending, which motivates them to tilt these conversations in a way likely to reduce their liability for expensive treatment.
  • Firms hired by private insurers to aggressively conduct advance care planning with their insurees publicize that they save thousands of dollars per beneficiary annually.
  • Significant factual inaccuracies have been documented in materials dealing with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and medically assisted nutrition and hydration. Many decision aids paint unquestionably slanted and negative pictures of the quality of life one would have if one’s life is preserved in what one packet called “Conditions Worse Than Death.”
  • There is strong reason to believe that these biased already-existing materials will be used far more commonly if tax dollars pay health providers specifically for advance care planning
  • If the government simply writes checks to health care providers for advance care planning sessions with patients, given patient confidentiality requirements there will be no way to monitor these tax funded conversations for bias, factual inaccuracies, or “nudging.” No safeguards will be possible to prevent the highly likely use of our tax dollars to push seniors to premature death.

Another video, Another Low in the Dehumanization of Human Life

<!– pat dup image remove attempt NoPlannedParenthood End of remove dup image attempt –>NoPlannedParenthoodWASHINGTON –This morning The Center for Medical Progress (CMP) released their ninth video in a series exposing the gruesome business of baby-body-part harvesting and trafficking, often involving affiliates of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation’s largest abortion provider.

“Planned Parenthood now commands more than one-third of the total abortion ‘market’,” said Carol Tobias, National Right to Life president. “We fully support investigations into many aspects of this grisly business. Planned Parenthood equals abortion.”

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest provider of abortions – at least one-third of all abortions in the U.S. are performed at Planned Parenthood-affiliated facilities. According to their most recent annual report, Planned Parenthood received at least $528 million annually from the federal government or other levels of government.

Based on data from their own annual report from 2008-2009, nearly one in eight women walking through the door of a Planned Parenthood clinic has an abortion. A background memo from National Right to Life can be found here.

These videos by the CMP provide additional grounds for thorough investigation by congressional committees, and by appropriate authorities in affected states, as to whether infants are being born alive during abortion procedures, and then killed during the process of harvesting their organs.

The federal Born-Alive Infants Protection Act (BAIPA, Public Law 107-207) defines “born alive” as meaning “the complete expulsion or extraction from his or her mother of that member [of the species homo sapiens], at any stage of development, who after such expulsion or extraction breathes or has a beating heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles, regardless of whether the umbilical cord has been cut, and regardless of whether the expulsion or extraction occurs as a result of natural or induced labor, cesarean section, or induced abortion.”

The federal law says that any “member of the species homo sapiens” who is “born alive,” by this definition, is a “person” and a “child” for all federal law purposes. Note that BAIPA explicitly applies “at any stage of development” — i.e., whether or not the baby’s lung development has reached the point where long-term survival is possible (“viability”).

Recapping PP Rally, 40 Days for Life, and Bishop Thomas’ Youth Mass for Life

Friends for Life:

Thank you for witnessing for life! On August 22nd we had 250 people join us in Toledo to raise awareness to the fact that Planned Parenthood is involved in trafficking and profiting off of aborted baby’s body parts. Our local rally was featured in the Blade, two local TV stations and was even picked up by the Washington Post, see here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/08/22/thousands-protest-outside-planned-parenthood-clinics-around-the-country/.

Just as important, however, to us raising awareness was our witness which gives dignity to those lives lost, as well as the men and women who are being taken advantage of through the altering of abortion procedures to effectively procure ‘specimens’ putting the women’s lives at risk and the selling of their aborted babies.

With this dark reality in mind there is a way that we together can end the horrific practice of abortion in our area. I want to invite you to join with me as we PRAY TO END ABORTION through the 40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN (www.40daysforlife.com).

This year’s campaign will take place September 23rd through November 1st and it simply invites people of good will to take 40 days to pray at their local abortion center. Since 2007 it’s been remarkable what the 40 Days for Life has accomplished: 10,331 babies have been saved, 118 abortion workers have quit their jobs, and 60 abortion facilities where the 40 Days for Life has taken place have shut their doors!

Ohio Abortions Hit 38-Year Record Low

Ohio Department of Health Reports 8.7 Percent Drop in Abortions in 2014

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Today, the Ohio Department of Health released the 2014 Ohio Abortion Report, revealing an 8.7 percent drop in abortions in 2014.  This marks the lowest level since 1976, when record-keeping first began, and is almost 25 percent lower than 2010 levels (28,123 abortions). A total of 21,186 abortions were reported.

“While our work is not yet complete, it is comforting to know that our pro-life initiatives are working in Ohio,” said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life. “More and more babies are alive today because of the leadership of Governor Kasich and our pro-life legislature. Ohio Right to Life will continue to advance its strategic legislative plan to help pregnant women and their children, both born and unborn. The nation continues to watch Ohio and learn from our collective efforts to hold the abortion industry accountable and to put women and their children first.”

In 2014, three abortion facilities closed across Ohio or stopped performing surgical abortions. Since 2010, half of the state’s abortion facilities have been been shuttered or closed voluntarily.

“Year by year, Ohio is sowing a culture of life–a culture that is literally saving thousands of unborn babies from the painful inhumanity that is abortion,” said Stephanie Ranade Krider, executive director of Ohio Right to Life. “As more and more women choose life for their children, we’re seeing Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry pushed to the fringe of civil society. There’s no doubt in our minds that the culture of life is winning.”
