Mr. Obama, Tear Down this Mandate!

National Right to Life

http://www.nrlc.org

Mr. Obama, tear down this mandate!

National Right to Life is challenging President Obama to respect Americans’ sacred, historical right to observe our most deeply held moral and political beliefs.  NRLC President Carol Tobias spoke at a rally outside the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., today after oral hearings in the case of Priests for Life v. Sebelius.

“At issue here today,” Mrs. Tobias said, “is whether religious institutions and organizations can be forced to provide health coverage for drugs and procedures in opposition to their religious and moral beliefs. . . The law allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services to mandate that most health plans cover any service that the Secretary places on a list of ‘preventive’ services.  There is nothing in the law to prevent the Secretary from placing abortion, assisted suicide, or any other additional services on this list.”

Mrs. Tobias continued:  “In an attempt to protect and promote abortion, Obamacare prohibits [health insurance] exchanges from telling prospective enrollees in advance about the ‘abortion surcharge’ which is the defined monthly charge for abortion coverage. This abortion surcharge is not optional – every enrollee in an abortion-covering exchange plan must pay it, including families that have moral objections to abortion. Moreover, many enrollees are having great difficulty even finding out whether these exchange plans cover elective abortion and so may be unknowingly signing up for an abortion-covering plan.

“Mr. President, why are you forcing millions of Americans who have a moral, conscientious objection to abortion to use their hard-earned dollars to pay for killing innocent unborn children?” Tobias asked.

Of course, we know the reason Obama is forcing Americans to pay for the killing of innocent children:  He is an ideologue on the issue, the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history.  His signature health care law is also his signature affront to unborn babies and their mothers, resulting in more dead, more wounded, more needless tragedies that could be avoided.

Mrs. Tobias concluded by calling on President Obama to “stand up for the rights of the American people.  Support a change to Obamacare so that Americans do not have to pay for abortions, and rescind your mandate to force religious institutions from participating in programs to which they object!”

NRLC was among the first to fight Obamacare’s mandates, its coverage of abortion in the exchanges, and its rationing of life-saving medical care.  Please help National Right to Life continue . . .  and win . . . the fight to repeal these anti-life provisions with a generous contribution today

President Obama recently told us about Obamacare that “the repeal debate is and should be over.”  Your contribution to help us repeal it is the best evidence that it is NOT!  Thank you for your life-saving support!

Wall Street Journal Highlights Rationing Implications of IPAB and its Bureaucratic Cousin

Wall Street Journal highlights rationing implications of IPAB and its bureaucratic cousin

<!– pat dup image remove attempt obamacarerationingre End of remove dup image attempt –>

By Jennifer Popik, JD, Robert Powell Center for Medical Ethics

obamacarerationingreA recent article in the Wall Street Journal highlights how two related entities authorized by the Obama health care law – the Independent Payment Advisory Board and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation — both have the power to ration care. This April 23 op-ed by Lanhee J. Chen and James C. Capretta adds to the documentation provided by NRLC demonstrating that rationing of health care is built into the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

The Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) has remained one of the most controversial provisions of the Obama health care law since its passage. But Chen’s and Capretta’s op-ed focuses on a less widely known, but also dangerous provision of the Obama health care law–the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation.

In the op-ed entitled, “The Other Stealthy ObamaCare Menace: The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation exists to impose price controls and limit payments to providers” Chen and Capretta write

“The Affordable Care Act’s Independent Payment Advisory Board has been so heavily criticized for being an unaccountable body with the power to effectively ration Medicare services that many congressional Democrats no longer support it. IPAB’s bureaucratic cousin—the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation—deserves the same treatment… Both institutions are in place to preserve rather than reform Medicare’s traditional, and broken, fee-for-service Medicare program. They both also embrace the ObamaCare technocratic mind-set.”

INDEPENDENT PAYMENT ADVISORY BOARD (IPAB)

First, some background on the IPAB and how it fosters rationing. Most of the public focus (as well as the op-ed’s discussion of IPAB) has been on its authority of the Board to cut Medicare with very limited Congressional authority to override or alter those cuts. But National Right to Life has been emphasizing a still graver concern – one at the core of rationing in the Obama health care law.

Integral to the Obama Administration’s stated mission to drive down what Americans choose to spend for life-saving and health-preserving health care, the IPAB is charged with a key role in suppressing not just governmental health care spending (such as that in Medicare) but also private health care spending by limiting what treatment doctors are allowed to give their patients.

The health care law instructs the IPAB to make recommendations to limit what all Americans are legally allowed to spend for their health care to hold it below the rate of medical inflation. The health care law then empowers the federal Department of Health and Human Services to implement these recommendations by imposing so-called “quality” and “efficiency” measures on health care providers. (The documentation can be found in the endnotes at www.nrlc.org/uploads/communications/healthcarereport2014.pdf)

What happens to doctors who violate a “quality” standard by prescribing more lifesaving medical treatment than it permits? They will be prevented from contracting with any of the health insurance plans “qualified” under the Obama Health Care Law. Few doctors would be able to remain in practice if subjected to that penalty.

This means that a treatment a doctor and patient deem advisable to save that patient’s life or preserve or improve the patient’s health–but which exceeds the standard imposed by the government–will be denied even if the patient is willing and able to pay for it. Repeal of IPAB is critically important to prevent this rationing of life-saving medical treatment.

CENTER FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID INNOVATION AND RATIONING

According to Chen and Capretta:

“The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation has flown below the political radar. That’s due to its seemingly innocuous mission: promoting new and more efficient ‘payment systems’ and ‘models of care.’ But this agency is just as dangerous as IPAB. It is a bureaucracy within the massive Department of Health and Human Services superstructure and therefore run by the president’s political appointees. But unlike most of the federal bureaucracy, the agency never has to go back to Congress to get an appropriation. ObamaCare provided it with $10 billion, upfront, to cover its costs for a full 10 years.

“The statute also gives the Center wide-ranging authority to alter the Medicare and Medicaid programs without further congressional action. It is supposed to be testing new ways to pay providers of medical services. Changes that are found through pilot programs to reduce costs without harming quality, or found to be budget neutral while improving quality, can be implemented nationwide through regulatory fiat.

“The agency’s broad mandate reveals the mind-set of ObamaCare’s authors. The premise is that the federal government is best positioned to lead an effort in innovation in medical delivery, despite all evidence to the contrary.

“The agency’s authority is broad enough to allow across-the-board cuts in payments to hospitals and physicians, and lower reimbursements for pharmaceuticals and related products as well, all in the name of innovation.

“The Congressional Budget Office certainly expects this to happen. It says that legislation to repeal the agency’s $10 billion in funding would increase the deficit because its cost-cutting agenda is expected to produce more than $10 billion in savings from reimbursement cuts. It’s one more indicator that budgetary scorekeeping in health care is hopelessly biased in favor of irrational governmental controls.”

Through both the IPAB and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, Obamacare authorizes federal bureaucrats to impose limits on what life-saving medical treatments Americans are allowed to get. It may not call this “rationing.” But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t.

this Thursday Priests For Life will have day in court!

Opening Arguments in Priests for Life Lawsuit to Protect Your Right to Freedom of Religion are Scheduled for 10:00am
this Thursday Morning, May 8!

May 6, 2014

You are about to have your day in court!

I just received the following update on Priests for Life’s historic lawsuit:

FYI—our case is second on the docket.  The first case has been given 15 minutes per side (so it is a 30 minute argument).  Consequently, our argument will begin around 10 am (we have been given 20 minutes per side).  I will be first at the podium.  There is always an outside chance the case before us will drop off the docket (but don’t expect it to).  See you on Thursday!

That email was sent to me by Robert Muise, the Co-Founder and Senior Counsel of the American Freedom Law Center and the lead attorney in our lawsuit against the Obama administration’s unjust and immoral HHS mandate.

Please CLICK HERE and support Priests for Life’s lawsuit!

Remember, although three of us from Priests for Life are specifically named as plaintiffs in our lawsuit – myself, Janet Morana our Executive Director, and Dr. Alveda King, PFL Director for African-American Outreach – in a very real sense …

YOU ARE A PLAINTIFF, too!

That’s because Priests for Life filed our lawsuit in direct response to the government’s attempt to take away YOUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT to fight for an end to the injustice of abortion!

Our lawsuit is to religious ministries what the Hobby Lobby case is to private businesses.

What makes it so important is the fact that its outcome will set a legal precedent for generations to come!

If we lose, our case will become a legal sledge hammer that the federal government and the abortion industry will use in an effort to bludgeon the People of Life into submission.

So don’t sit back and allow the federal government to:

a) Dictate how and when and where you can practice your religion.

b) Tell you what constitutes practicing religion and what doesn’t.

c) Force you to take part in immoral actions that violate your conscience.  And …

d) Establish federal regulations that both restrict your right to freedom of speech and compel you to say things you do not believe.

Fight back!

And the best way to do so right now is to:

CLICK HERE and make a contribution to Priests for Life’s Legal Fund so that we can sustain our lawsuit and, through it, protect your First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

We simply cannot fight the might and power of the federal government alone.

No single one of us can.

We’ve got to stand together in this.

So please CLICK HERE and help today.

The size of your gift is not nearly as important as is the fact that you give what you can, and that you do so right now.  Before you delete my email and move on to your next one.

If you can make a contribution of $1,500 to help protect your religious liberty, then do so.

If all you can do today is send $25 or $15, then do that.

Your dollars are desperately needed because, win or lose in the D.C. Court of Appeals …

Priests for Life’s lawsuit is going to the Supreme Court!

If the Appeals Court rules in our favor, the government will likely appeal to the Supreme Court.

And if the Appeals Court rules in favor of the government, Priests for Life will appeal to the Supreme Court.

Which is why it is so important that our Legal Fund be replenished at every opportunity.

So please CLICK HERE and make a contribution that will allow Priests for Life to fight for YOUR RIGHT to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Don’t delay.

Opening arguments in our historic appeal will be made right around 10:00am this Thursday May 8.

It’s all hands on deck right now as continue to fight the government’s attempt to compel you and all Americans to take a direct role in the grave evil of abortion.

Thank you for whatever help you can give today.

And please circle May 8 on your calendar and PRAY for Rob Muise and his legal team.  Ask the Holy Spirit to be with them as they present our case against the government.  And ask Him to inspire the judges hearing our arguments to rule justly and without political bias.

Thank you again and may God bless you.

Sincerely yours in the Risen Lord,

Father Frank Pavone, National Director
Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries

We’re all in this together!

Pope Emeritus Benedict rightly calls religious liberty the “most cherished of America’s freedoms.”

For the sake of our unborn brothers and sisters, yourself, the pro-life movement, our fellow Americans and all who are to come after us …

We must protect and defend our First Amendment right to FREEDOM OF RELIGION!

CLICK HERE so that Priests for Life can continue to fight for you.

Thank you for your prayers and your financial gift.  And know that in heartfelt appreciation for all that you do for the youngest members of our human family, I remember you at every Mass I offer; as do all the priests of Priests for Life.  May God bless you.

Abortion Video

LIVE ACTION

a new media movement for Life

Dear Friend,

Emily Letts wants to make abortion something cool.  Something normal.  Something good.

Her abortion video, now making the rounds in the news, shows her smiling, humming, and telling herself how lucky she is to have an abortion.  It shows her accepting an unseen surgical procedure and singing the praises of the medical staff assisting her.

The video lies to us all.

The video doesn’t show the child’s pain as he or she is torn from the safe harbor of his or her mother’s uterus. It doesn’t show the dead victim of Letts’s seemingly “happy” experience.

The slaughtered child disregarded in this promotion of abortion will never have a voice, will never see the light of day, will never experience joy or exercise his or her rights.

In her own description below her YouTube video, Letts says, “I respect everyone’s opinions as long as they do not force them onto others.”

Is she not forcing her own opinion on her child’s very life?

Yours in the fight for life,

Lauren Merz

Ohio Right to Life to Protest at Planned Parenthood Fundraisers

Host Committees for Planned Parenthood Fundraisers Publicly Highlighted

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                  CONTACT: Laura Beth Kirsop

DATE: Tuesday, May 6, 2014

COLUMBUS, Ohio – This week, Ohio Right to Life will publicly highlight a number of Ohio’s academic, business and political sponsors of Planned Parenthood’s statewide fundraisers on May 7 and May 8. Cecile Richards, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood, will be the keynote speaker for the fundraisers. The first protest will be held right outside Planned Parenthood’s Cleveland fundraiser at the English Oak Room, Tower City Center at 11:30 am.

“It is disheartening that so many of Ohio’s political class and elite would support an industry that appears to be disproportionately killing minority babies and harming low-income mothers,” said Kayla Smith, Director of Legislative Affairs at Ohio Right to Life. “Planned Parenthood has no true loyalty to Ohio’s women or to the 25,473 children aborted in 2012. The abortion giant seeks to serve only itself, thereby achieving the destructive political agenda of social and racial injustice established by its founder, Margaret Sanger.”

Recently, Ohio Right to Life launched a campaign that highlights more than 643 free and low-cost alternative healthcare providers to Planned Parenthood. None of these alternative providers offer abortion services. These alternative healthcare providers make any need for Planned Parenthood obsolete. To view a summary list of providers click here.

“Ohio Right to Life seeks to ensure that women and children across Ohio have access to medical services without the dangerous threat of abortion, ” continued Smith. “We ask all those who stand for life to join us on May 7 and May 8 to protest this money grab by Planned Parenthood.”

Ohio Right to Life invited Mrs. Richards to a public debate. Mrs. Richards has yet to decline or accept, though the invitation remains open.

Obamacare Forcing Pro-life Family to Pay for Other People’s Abortions

NRL News Today

Obamacare forcing pro-life family to pay for other people’s abortions

ADF files suit on behalf of Conn. family losing their health plan, now forced into exchange that only has plans funding abortion

abortionisnothealthcareBRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing a Connecticut pro-life leader and his family that are losing their health plan due to Obamacare filed suit in federal court Thursday. The family is suing because they are now being forced on to the state’s health insurance exchange, which only offers plans that require them to pay for other people’s abortions. …

“With Obamacare, if you like your current plan, you can’t always keep it, and you may have to pay for other people’s abortions in your new plan,” said ADF Senior Counsel Casey Mattox. “Neither the Constitution nor federal and state law allow for this type of government coercion. The Obama administration may not place a very high value on respecting a person’s constitutionally protected freedoms, but both federal and state law do. We are asking the court to stop the individual mandate from violating the rights of this family.”

“No one should be forced to pay for other people’s abortions,” added ADF Senior Legal Counsel Matt Bowman. “In America, we don’t separate what people do from what they believe, and that’s why Obamacare’s attack on the freedoms of Americans must stop.”

Barth and Abbie Bracy have insurance through a private insurer, but Obamacare has forced the insurer to cancel the policy effective later this year. Now being forced on to the Obamacare exchange in the state of Connecticut, the Bracys are left only with plans that include a mandatory surcharge used to fund the elective abortions of others.

“Through the Affordable Care Act, the government has required the Bracys to purchase a certain type of government-approved health insurance or pay burdensome fines for their refusal…,” the complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut states. “[T]he Bracys must also pay a separate fee to be used solely to pay for elective abortions for others. The Bracys are devout Catholics; Barth Bracy is an ordained deacon and a former missionary. The Bracys are deeply pro-life and object to being forced to pay for procedures that kill innocent human beings….”

Don’t forget to Vote TOMORROW

Right to Life of Northeast Ohio                                                       May 5, 2014

Dear Friend,

Have you ever listened to the Abbot and Costello comedy routine called “Who’s on first?”   In this routine, Bud Abbot is trying to tell Lou Costello that the name of the player on first base is “Who”.  Of course Lou doesn’t get it because “Who’s on first” is a statement and he thinks it’s a question.  He gets extremely confused and the resulting conversation is hilarious!

Judging by the amount of misleading campaign mail I’ve received since Friday, there are more than just comedians trying to confuse us!   I have been absolutely amazed at some of the things that have been passed off as “facts” when they are nothing but lies, especially by those who are proclaiming to be pro-life!  When it comes to voting and the truth, this is NOT funny!   Just as I said in my e-mail on Friday:  Don’t be fooled by all of the political ads, misconceptions and lies that you are hearing. Become an informed voter.  It is imperative that we elect legislators who uphold the sanctity of life so that we create stronger laws and policies to protect that life from conception through natural death.

Don’t forget to vote TOMORROW!

Remind your family and friends to vote, too! We have a voice that we need to make heard, as well as being a “voice for the voiceless”! Remember that God is our guide, and our first loyalty is to Him and to the gift of life that He gave us through the resurrection of His Son.

        Our work goes on…..

For Life,

Denise Leipold

Ex-Abortion Clinic Worker: We Gave Women Anesthesia and Had No Idea What We Were Doing

Ex-Abortion Clinic Worker: We Gave Women Anesthesia and Had No Idea What We Were Doing

by Chris R | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 4/28/14 9:19 AM<!––><!––>

National

“Meet the Abortion Providers” and “Abortion the Inside Story” are companion documentaries that must be seen by anyone who wants to understand the issue of prenatal homicide.

The films feature women and men who used to work in the abortion industry, but who have turned around and to defend life and women from abortion killing. Although the documentaries were produced in the late 80s and early 90s, they remain highly relevant in the post-Gosnell era.

Here are some highlights:

Joy Davis, who directed six abortion clinics in Alabama and Mississippi but later became a pro-life activist, said that her boss, Dr. Tommy Tucker, was so greedy that he fired his anesthesiologist, the registered nurses and the lab technician.

abortionhurtsHe trained Joy Davis to act as an abortionist.  “I never spent the first day in medical school.  I really know nothing about medicine, other than what I had seen other doctors do, but I started doing abortions.”  Ms. Davis, who was only trained as an ultrasound technician, explained that staff had watched the doctors put women under anesthesia.

“We started putting patients asleep ourselves, and we had no idea what we were doing.”

Helen Pendley explained that it was she, not the abortionist, who prescribed the drugs, called in the medications, and was the one on call when a woman started hemorrhaging.  She also handled post-abortion calls from women who told her that they were  experiencing physical or emotional problems; the women were curtly told that their problems must have been preexisting and were not  the abortion center’s responsibility.

“I cannot tell you one thing that happens in an abortion clinic that is not a lie,” says Carol Everett, who had an abortion and was an administrator of five abortion facilities.

Nita Whitten, who also worked in a Dallas abortion center says, “It’s a lie when they tell you that they’re doing it to help the woman, ‘cause they’re not … We were doing it to get her money.” She explained that it was common to bring $15,000 a day to the bank.

Norma McCorvey, the woman who challenged Texas’ pro-life law using the pseudonym “Jane Roe” in Roe vs. Wade, is also a former abortion worker who became pro-life.  Now she admits:  “It was just a racket…  [The abortionist] was just doing it for the money.  He didn’t care about the women.”

Dina Madsen, a former abortion worker from Sacramento, explained that many of the clinic workers had had several abortions and had no confidence at all in the abortionists they worked with, but had no trouble falsely reassuring their prospective clients. “How stupid can you get?”

Deborah Henry, a Michigan abortion counselor, explained that she and her coworkers lied about the pain women experience while undergoing abortions, and provided no information whatsoever about the development of the preborn child.

One former abortionist testified that the ultrasound machine is always hidden from the pregnant mother, so she won’t see the image of her child and change her mind (and so the abortionist won’t lose a sale).  But how can a woman make an informed choice about abortion when information is deliberately hidden from her?

The pro-life movement has led the way in combating these abortion industry abuses.  But it is an uphill battle against an aggressive, well-funded opposition.  Don’t be fooled: abortion facility regulations are incredibly necessary.  No one makes the case for them better than  abortion workers themselves.
