Ohio Right to Life Testifies in Favor of Rape Victims Rights Bill

Ohio Right to Life Testifies in Favor of Rape Victims Rights Bill
Legislation to Protect Rape Victims and their Children

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Today, Kayla Smith, Director of Legislative Affairs at Ohio Right to Life, offered testimony in favor of Substitute S.B. 207 before the Senate Criminal Justice Committee. The bill, introduced by Sens. Tom Patton, R-Strongsville, and Gayle Manning, R-North Ridgeville, would protect rape victims and their children, during pregnancy and after birth.

Kayla Smith, Director of Legislative Affairs, testifies before the Senate Criminal Justice Committee.

The pro-life provisions of Substitute S.B. 207 include:

  • A victim/birth-parent can place her child for adoption without the legal consent of the offender if the child who is being placed was conceived by rape or sexual battery.
  • A victim can obtain a court order to terminate the offender’s parental rights if the child was conceived by rape or sexual battery.

“We applaud legal safeguards that will limit the interaction a victim potentially faces with her offender both during and after pregnancy,” said Smith.

Last summer, Ohio Right to Life commended the introduction of a similar bill by Sens. Charleta Tavares, D-Columbus, and Nina Turner, D-Cleveland. The bill came in the wake of the Cleveland case in which one of three kidnapped women gave birth to a daughter fathered by kidnapper and captor, Ariel Castro.

“We are encouraged by all initiatives that prevent further trauma from being inflicted on the mother and her child,” continued Smith. “As we’ve said from the beginning: Laws that enable mothers to take control, make positive choices and affirm the lives of their children and their family are critical to assist with the recovery process.”

Ohio Right to Life thanks Sens. Patton and Manning for protecting the victims of sexual assault and their unborn children.

Make 2014 the Year America Begins to Reject Abortion!

Priests for Life’s Summer Campaign to Make 2014 the Year America Begins to Reject Abortion!

May 13, 2014

2014 marks a critical moment in your valiant struggle to end the injustice of abortion.

 Here are five more:

1.Because you are deeply committed to the pro-life cause.  You constantly set your own needs aside in order to protect and defend your innocent unborn brothers and sisters.  And they desperately need you to do so yet again today.

2.Because ever since you joined the Priests for Life family, you have proven yourself to be one of our most dedicated and most active partners.

3.Because the work we do from today until August 31 is going to prove decisive in our shared mission of freeing America from the scourge of abortion.

4.Which means our fellow Americans must have the Gospel of Life preached to them without apology, without fear and without compromise.  And thanks to you and other ministry partners, no one is as fully equipped to do that as Priests for Life.

5.In order for you and Priests for Life to lead the People of Life to victory over abortion,  we must be fully engaged throughout the summer months.  No let up.  No slowdown.  No interruptions.  No pulling back.  For that to happen, you and the entire Priests for Life family must take part in our Summer Pledge Campaign.

That said:

It is crucial that you click here and make a special Summer Pledge that will empower Priests for Life to assist you in your work of fighting for an end to legalized abortion-on-demand in America!

We must continue to work together and remind our fellow Americans that abortion is corrupting our entire society – including the economy! – and destroying the soul of this once great nation.

You know this.

That’s why you have dedicated your adult life to ending the injustice of abortion.

It’s also why you decided to join the Priests for Life family.

And it’s why I know you will do whatever you must to make sure Priests for Life is fully funded so we can help you carry on the fight against abortion and for LIFE.

As I told you a moment ago, your Summer Pledge is critically important to your pro-life mission because historically the summer months bring with them a drop in contributions to Priests for Life.

Some years are worse than others.

Well this summer we cannot afford a drop of any kind because of the government’s all-out attack on the unborn; as well as its unabashed attempt to squash religious freedom in America.

Plus, the upcoming 2014 mid-term elections will play a key role in our fight against abortion.

All of which is why, from now until the end of August, you and Priests for Life must keep on doing all that we’ve been doing for the past twenty plus years.  Namely:

Preaching the Gospel of Life with passion and conviction.

Convincing America to embrace God’s gift of LIFE and reject the empty promises of the abortion industry.

Urging Americans to get involved in the political process and vote their pro-life principles this November.

And going all out to STOP THE KILLING once and for all!

That’s the only way we’re going to free our nation from the deadly grip of abortion and save the lives of tens of millions of innocent children.

Which brings me back to you and Priests for Life’s Summer Pledge Campaign.

I’m counting on you to click here and do all you can to provide Priests for Life with the funds we need throughout the financially dry summer months so we can SHOW America what forty years of legal abortion has wrought.

Please take a moment right now to do this.

Your dollars will help Priests for Life:

Mobilize TEN MILLION Americans to VOTE PRO-LIFE in 2014.  Specific work in critical need of funds include:

• Researching, printing and distributing Voter Guides.
• Printing and distributing 5,000,000 “Voting with a Clear Conscience” brochures which instruct Catholics on their moral duty in elections.
• Distributing information for clergy on what they can/can’t say and do during an election.  It’s a LOT more than they think!
• Conducting a nationwide “National Survey of American Voters”.
• Taping special TV programs for our “Defending Life” series that airs on EWTN and reaches some 230,000,000 homes!

Sustain Priests for Life’s lawsuit against the HHS abortion mandate.  The first round of oral arguments in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals took place on May 8.  Remember, our lawsuit is to religious organizations what the Hobby Lobby lawsuit is to private businesses.  Which is why David Green, the CEO of Hobby Lobby, has come out publicly in support of our case against the government’s abortion-laced HHS mandate.  We have to stand together to protect our freedoms.

Close down more unsafe and unregulated abortion mills!
As I told you in a recent email, I am collaborating with Troy Newman of Operation Rescue and other pro-life leaders to galvanize the People of Life into a powerful force that will rein in America’s out-of-control and unsafe abortion mills.  So far in 2014, seven surgical clinics in four states have already announced they were closing their doors.  Last year you helped put 87 abortion mills out of business!  And we’re actively working to shut down clinics in Ohio, California, Pennsylvania, Texas, Kansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida and Maryland.

Work with state legislators to protect unsuspecting mothers and our unborn brothers and sisters from unscrupulous abortionists.
We continue to win incredible victories at the state level.  You’ll recall from prior emails on this, you have helped us and the pro-life movement pass over 205 such laws in the past three years alone!  Thus far in 2014 we achieved pro-life victories in ten states: Alaska, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida, Kansas, Indiana, Mississippi, South Dakota, Arizona and Georgia.  And by the time you get this email, it looks as though we’ll be able to add South Carolina and Missouri to the list!

Those are just four of our top priorities for the summer.  And that short list doesn’t include …

Producing and shipping tons of materials to pro-life groups, leaders and activists so they can fight abortion in their local communities.

Sending forth our Priests for Life priests and Pastoral Team members to parishes, churches, institutions and conferences all across the country.

Engaging the youth of America to bring their energy and passion to our pro-life movement.  Surveys show that young people are flocking to the cause in droves.

Using every medium of communication available to preach the Gospel of Life: television … radio … Internet … email … YouTube … Facebook … Twitter … Tumblr…Instagram…Pinterest…Google+… webcasts.  Anything and everything to get out the truth about abortion.

As you can see, that’s a LOT of work!

But every single program is crucial if we are to emancipate our nation from its slavery to abortion and restore the principles of freedom upon which America was founded.

That said, how you respond to this email will go a long way in determining which path America chooses going forward.

So please take a moment right now to click here and make your Summer Pledge to Priests for Life.

It will take roughly $1,950,000 to fund all of the work I just listed for you.

And every penny of that amount will come from you and your fellow Priests for Life family members.

That’s because we receive no funds from any official Church entity … neither from Rome nor here in the United States. And that in spite of the fact that many at the Vatican – including Pope Francis himself … who was a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family of which I was also an Official – as well as Bishops around the world and here in the U.S. wholeheartedly endorse our Priests for Life ministry.

When all is said and done, it’s YOU and other hard-working, dedicated pro-life champions like you who make our work possible.

You help as much and as generously as you do because you consider Priests for Life an extension of your own pro-life work.  And you’re right!  We are!

And working together we will make America a place where abortion is not merely illegal but unthinkable.

From all I’m seeing and hearing in my travels around the country, I am absolutely convinced, as I hope you are, that we are far closer to achieving that goal than most people think.

Which is why I’m counting on you to click here and make your Summer Pledge today.

As I told you at the beginning of this email:

2014 marks a critical moment in your valiant struggle to end the injustice of abortion.

And the work we do from now until the end of summer will go a long way in bringing us closer to the day when we establish America as an abortion-free nation!

In order for Priests for Life to help you make that happen we need to be fully-funded.

But June is right around the corner.

In order to prevent a drop of any kind in contributions throughout the summer, it’s vital that you click here and make a Summer Pledge today.

In doing so you will help ensure that Priests for Life is able to help you carry out your pro-life mission … which includes getting MILLIONS of Catholics to VOTE LIKE CATHOLICS this November … and in all future elections.

Ideally, I’d like to raise our entire summer budget in the next thirty days.  All $1,950,000 of it.

But given the time of year and the woeful state of the economy, that’s not likely to happen.

So I’ve broken our summer budget into three more manageable amounts:

– $650,000 now for June.

-Another $650,000 in July.

– And the remaining $650,000 by the second week of August.

In order to meet those monthly budget goals I need you to make a Summer Pledge today!

Here is a list of the Pledge amounts that will allow Priests for Life to raise our summer budget:

1 person to Pledge $100,000 = $100,000
3 friends to Pledge $50,000 each = 150,000
6 people to Pledge $25,000 each = 150,000
20 partners to Pledge $10,000 each = 200,000
40 co-workers to Pledge $5,000 each = 200,000
300 individuals to Pledge $1,000 each = 300,000
500 supporters to Pledge $500 each = 250,000
1,000 associates to Pledge $250 each = 250,000
2,000 members to Pledge $100 each = 200,000
4,000 comrades to Pledge $50 each = 200,000

That’s a total of 7,870 friends and supporters Pledging $2,000,000 to Priests for Life

Prayerfully consider making one of those Pledge amounts and make it a tangible sign of your deep commitment to the mission of ending America’s abortion holocaust.

All I ask of you is that you be:

(1) As generous as you always have been.  And …

(2) That you do this right now, before you go on to your next email.

I’ll close this very important appeal for help on that note.

Before I do, though, I want to assure you of my prayers, and the prayers of everyone here at Priests for Life.  For me personally, I remember you at each Mass I offer; as do all the priests of Priests for Life.

Thank you again and may God richly bless you for the selfless way in which you give of yourself for His innocent unborn children.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director
Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries

PS If you make a Summer Pledge for $50 or more today I have a SPECIAL GIFT for you.

Anthony DeStefano, my close friend and longtime collaborator in the pro-life movement, has written what I believe is his most important book yet.  It’s called A Travel Guide to Life and I dearly want to send you a copy because Anthony’s book will give you an enlightening tour of the kind of deeply meaningful and happy life you can live here on earth.

One of the things I like best about A Travel Guide to Life is the fact that Anthony has incorporated the one crucial element about living a happy life that is so often missing from other so-called “self-help” and “personal development” books.  That component is spirituality and a living, working faith in GodCardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, recognized this right off when he read A Travel Guide to Life.  Afterward he wrote:

“Anthony DeStefano provides a clear and concise road map to a fulfilled and happy life, and makes the compelling case that we must be God-centered in order to experience true joy.  While the book provides solid self-help techniques, Anthony helps show us that the way to happiness is to know, love, and serve God in this life, so that we might experience everlasting happiness with Him in Heaven.”

Endorsed by Tony Robbins, Kathy Lee Gifford and many others, A Travel Guide to Life will have a profound impact on your life because it will help you understand that when you take up the crosses in your life and follow God, He will transform it all, making everything new and granting you the strength, peace and happiness for which you yearn.

Thank you again.  And may God bless you.

We offer various options for you to receive different emails from the different branches of our ministry. See how you can vary your preferences or unsubscribe. Remember, we want to keep you in the loop!

Ohio Right to Life Requests that Abortion Advertisement Be Removed from Website

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Recently, Ohio Right to Life discovered that the University of Cincinnati is advertising Planned Parenthood’s abortion services on their Women’s Center webpage. Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio recently lost its transfer agreement with the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in light of a new legislative initiative which bans ambulatory surgical facilities from having a transfer agreement with taxpayer funded hospitals. Today, Mike Gonidakis, President of Ohio Right to Life, sent a letter to the university President, Santa J. Ono, respectfully requesting that the university remove the abortion language from its website.

“Ohio’s pro-life taxpayers are troubled that a taxpayer-funded institution is advertising abortion on its website,” said Katherine McCann, Public Relations Manager at Ohio Right to Life. “Ohio Right to Life’s mission is to protect and promote life. A massive part of that endeavor occurs by ensuring that our conscience rights are protected so that we can advocate effectively.”

Last spring, Ohio Right to Life wrote to the President of the University of Toledo, requesting that his taxpayer-funded institution refrain from having a transfer agreement with the abortion clinic, Capital Care Network.

“We’re not asking these institutions to agree with us,” said McCann. “We’re simply asking that they appreciate that taxpayers and alumni alike have a wide range of beliefs on abortion, and that the pro-life among them would appreciate if the university did not take sides in the debate.”

Death Panels: Massachusetts Hospital Imposing DNR Orders on Patients Without Consent

Death Panels: Massachusetts Hospital Imposing DNR Orders on Patients Without Consent

by Wesley J. Smith | Boston, MA | | 5/12/14 10:50 AM

Can this have something to do with Romney/Obamacare?

According to a medical study, since 2006, Massachusetts General Hospital’s Bioethics Committee has forced people to not receive wanted resuscitation by imposing unilateral DNRs. And apparently, it’s all done in Star Chamber secrecy. From Thaddeus Pope’s blog (quoting from a medical symposium presentation):

Unilateral Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) orders are a specific type of medical futility decision in which clinicians withhold advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the event of cardiopulmonary arrest despite objections of patients or their surrogates. There is little information on how often and to whom unilateral DNR orders are applied.

patient9The ethics committee at Massachusetts General Hospital has had a unilateral DNR policy since 2006. We investigated the incidence, sociodemographic and clinical predictors, and outcomes of patients with unilateral DNR orders.

If I read this correctly, thirty-eight percent of those upon whom the unilateral DNRs appear not to have been at the end stage of a terminal disease:

Patients for whom unilateral DNR was recommended were more likely to have conditions judged to be endstage rather than potentially reversible (62% versus 41%, p=0.05).

And who can be surprised that non whites were more likely to have an involuntary DNR imposed?

This is medical tyranny. People are refused potentially life-saving treatment based on the secret views of strangers in committee who have given themselves the power to so dictate.

Identical Twin Girls with Rare Condition Born Holding Hands

Identical Twin Girls with rare condition born holding hands

By Dave Andrusko

Identical twins Jillian and Jenna Thistlethwaite were born last Friday in Akron General Medical Center, a rare enough occasion.

But they shared one amniotic sac and one placenta—a condition known as monoamniotic (or “mono mono”)–a rare condition that takes place about one of every 10,000 pregnancies. And because there are potential life-threatening challenges—the girls’ umbilical cords could have become entangled–mom Sarah Thistlethwaite spent 56 days on bed rest.

And then to top it off, when doctors lifted Jillian and Jenna up for their parents to see after delivery, they were grasping each other’s hands!

Fortunately the girls were breathing on their own which allowed their parents to hold them on Mother’s Day.

Mrs. Thistlethwaite told the Akron Beacon Journal that this was “the best Mother’s Day present ever.” A middle school math teacher, she added, “They’re already best friends.”

She described their birth as “definitely, truly a miracle.”

The girls were born at 33 weeks and two days. Jenna, at 4 pounds, 2 ounces and 17 inches, came first. Forty-eight seconds later Jillian arrived, weighting in at 3 pounds, 13 ounces and 17.5 inches in length.

Actually, there is one final rarity. Another mother is on bed rest at Akron General Medical Center. She is also carrying mono mono twin girls.

It’s all in the Spelling…..

Right To Life of Northeast Ohio

It’s all in the spelling…..

is for the miracle of life. It is the ultimate gift that only a woman can carry in her womb to nurture and develop until birth. It is never a mistake or an accident. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” Psalm 127:3

is for the ordinary yet outstanding obedience to the laws of God and the laws of nature in recognizing the awesome responsibility that a woman is given to continue the human race through her own reproductive power.   It is the opening of her heart to accept the miracle no matter the circumstance. It is the outpouring of compassion we give to mothers who give the gift of life to an adoptive family.

is for the time, talents and treasures that mothers give to their children over their lifetime. It is for teaching their children Christian morals, values, self-respect and more so that they can make decisions in life which reflect what they have learned, and pass this on to their own children. “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

is for the happiness and the heartache that mothers experience as their children grow. It is for the hope that a pregnant woman feels for the future even though she may be scared and confused. It is for the help that is available so that those who ARE experiencing a crisis may know that they are not alone. No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthian 10:13

is for the eternal optimism that mothers have for their children even in the face of sometimes overwhelming odds. It is for the eager faces of their children, and even the evil that a mother must overcome to raise her child right. It is for the encouragement that is given to all of us through the word of God. “But Jesus said: Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”  Matthew 19:14

is for rights and responsibility. A woman has a right to what she can do with her own body, but a responsibility to nurture the life of a new human being that may be created in her womb. When a woman becomes a mother, it doesn’t matter if that life is born or not….it is REAL.   “Judgment will begin at the house of God” 1Peter 4:17…..not at the Supreme Court.

To all mothers: whether you gave birth to and raised a child, or whether you adopted or fostered a child…no matter what the situation….Happy Mother’s Day.   If you are a mother that has not yet given birth and believe abortion is OK, we pray for you this Mother’s Day and always so that you may come to realize the tremendous honor that God has bestowed upon you with the gift of life.

And finally, to my own mom….I love you!  Happy Mother’s Day!

Our work goes on…

Moms in the Movement are Doubly Blessed!

National Right To Life

Moms in the Movement are Doubly Blessed!

Every Mother deserves our love and thanks this Mother’s Day.  The loving devotion you give to children to give them the best lives you can is an inspiration to all of us!

Mothers who volunteer in the pro-life movement have, in a way, two sets of children they enable to have wonderful lives: their own children, for whom they sacrifice so much to raise and nurture; and the children who have life today because of the sacrificial work they do for the pro-life cause.

With statistics showing the pro-life movement has saved well over 9 million lives since Roe v. Wade, many pro-life volunteers might be responsible for one, two, or many more precious individual lives saved because of their work.  And while they might never meet those children or know who they are, they are heroes because of the sacrifices they made to help another mom choose life for her child.

Imagine, for every one of those children saved, a lifetime now to enjoy, a lifetime that might not have been.

And for each mom who chose life for her child, a lifetime to cherish that gift forever!

So for all moms who make the world the wonderful place it is, thank you – our prayers and thanks are with you this weekend and always!

And for those moms who go above and beyond to help ensure that not only their own precious children, but many precious others, too, can experience the joy of life, our deepest thanks. You are life-savers!

Legal Experts Predict that Priests for Life Lawsuit to Protect Your Right to Freedom of Religion will be Decided at the Supreme Court!

Legal Experts Predict that
Priests for Life Lawsuit to Protect Your
Right to Freedom of Religion will be
Decided at the Supreme Court!

May 9, 2014

Yesterday Priests for Life spoke for you before the second-highest court in the nation, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

We also represented you in a rally that Priests for Life put together outside the courthouse.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz spoke at the rally.  Others who took part were:

• U.S. Representatives Trent Franks of Arizona, Tim Huelskamp of Kansas, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Scott Garrett of New Jersey, Chris Smith of New Jersey, and Diane Black of Tennessee
• Josh Duggar, Executive Director, FRC Action
• Gary Bauer, President, American Values
• Lila Rose, President of Live Action
• Carol Tobias, President of the National Right to Life Committee
• Jeanne Monahan, President of the March for Life
• Charmaine Yoest, President and CEO, Americans United for Life
• Tim Goeglein VP for External Relations for Focus on the Family
• Day Gardner, President of National Black Pro-Life Union
• Jimmy Nolan, President of Crossroads
• Paul Rondeau, Executive Director of American Life League
• Sam Casey, Managing Director and General Counsel of the Law of Life Project
• Sarah Torre of the Heritage Foundation
• Tina Whittington, Assistant Director, Students for Life of America
• Rev. Rob Schenk, President of Faith and Action in the Nation’s Capitol
• Rev. Patrick Mahoney, President of Christian Defense Coalition

That list of individuals shows you just how important our lawsuit is because it is the first case of the religious non-profit organizations to reach the appellate level on the merits of the arguments.

Robert Muise, Senior Counsel for the American Freedom Law Center and the lead attorney arguing our case in court, correctly points out:

“This case with Priests for Life is the lead case for the non-profit religious organizations challenging the mandate similar to how Hobby Lobby is the lead case for the for-profit companies challenging the HHS mandate.”

In case you missed it, here are a couple links you can click on to watch news coverage of both our Rally for Religious Freedom and analysis of our lawsuit:

From Fox News:

From Christian Broadcasting Network:

And the Washington Times carried my op-ed yesterday both online and in print:

As you will see and hear, the abortion mandate of the tyrannical HHS mandate violates Priests for Life’s very reason for existing!

And yours, too!  And every Americans!

That’s why we’re in court.

We’re fighting for you, for ourselves, for the pro-life movement and for every American’s First Amendment right to FREEDOM OF RELIGION.

That’s why I beg you to …

Please CLICK HERE and support Priests for Life’s lawsuit!

Remember, although three of us from Priests for Life are specifically named as plaintiffs in our lawsuit – myself, Janet Morana our Executive Director, and Dr. Alveda King, PFL Director for African-American Outreach – in a very real sense …

That’s because the HHS mandate is nothing less than an attempt to take away YOUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT to fight for an end to the injustice of abortion!

As I just told you, our lawsuit is to religious ministries what the Hobby Lobby case is to private businesses.

What makes it so important is the fact that its outcome will set a legal precedent for generations to come!

If we lose, our case will become a legal sledge hammer that the federal government and the abortion industry will use in an effort to bludgeon the People of Life into submission.

So don’t sit back and allow the federal government to:

a) Dictate how and when and where you can practice your religion.

b) Tell you what constitutes practicing religion and what doesn’t.

c) Force you to take part in immoral actions that violate your conscience.  And …

d) Establish federal regulations that both restrict your right to freedom of speech and compel you to say things you do not believe.

Fight back!

And the best way to do so right now is to:

CLICK HERE and make a contribution to Priests for Life’s Legal Fund so that we can sustain our lawsuit and, through it, protect your First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

We simply cannot fight the might and power of the federal government alone.

No single one of us can.

We’ve got to stand together in this.

So please CLICK HERE and help today.

The size of your gift is not nearly as important as is the fact that you give what you can, and that you do so right now.  Before you delete my email and move on to your next one.

If you can make a contribution of $1,500 to help protect your religious liberty, then do so.

If all you can do today is send $25 or $15, then do that.

Your dollars are desperately needed because, win or lose in the D.C. Court of Appeals …

Priests for Life’s lawsuit is going to the Supreme Court!

If the Appeals Court rules in our favor, the government will likely appeal to the Supreme Court.

And if the Appeals Court rules in favor of the government – as most legal analysts predict will happen given the judges who were “randomly selected” to sit on the 3-judge panel that heard our case yesterday – Priests for Life will definitely appeal to the Supreme Court.

Which is why it is so important that our Legal Fund be replenished at every opportunity.

So please CLICK HERE and make a contribution that will allow Priests for Life to fight for YOUR RIGHT to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Don’t delay.

It’s all hands on deck right now as continue to fight the government’s attempt to compel you and all Americans to take a direct role in the grave evil of abortion.

Thank you for whatever help you can give today.

And please PRAY for the judges who will rule on our appeal.  Ask the Holy Spirit to inspire them to rule justly and without political bias.

Thank you again and may God bless you.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Decades After Birth, Fetal Cells Remain in Mother’s Body Aiding to Repair Injuries

Decades after birth, fetal cells remain in mother’s body aiding to repair injuries

 By Dave Andrusko

Editor’s note. We ran this a couple of months ago, but it seems wonderfully appropriate to re-run just ahead of Mother’s Day.

unborn_baby68Although widely known in the scientific community, it’s news to most laypeople that years—even decades—after a mother delivers her baby, some of the fetal cells will remain in her body. These fetal cells, which are some of the developing baby’s cells, while not necessarily stem cells, are adaptable in their ability to grow and repair tissues.

Liz Szabo writing in USA Today, adds additional breadth and depth to our understanding of the ability of these fetal cells to “come to a mother’s rescue” in a story whose sub-headline reads, “New study in mice shows that fetal cells carried by moms after they give birth may actually provide stem cells to help the body repair some damage.”

Szabo’s lead is extremely clever:

“Many moms carry photos of their children in their wallets.

“Yet mothers may be surprised to learn that they’re also carrying some of their children’s cells, years or even decades after the end of a pregnancy. And while a baby photo can melt a mother’s heart, the cells her child leaves behind in her blood may actually heal it, emerging research suggests.”

Or, as she puts it later,

“[T]he fetal cells left behind in women’s bodies are more than mementos.”

The story begins with a discussion of a paper delivered last week at the American Heart Association’s International Stroke Conference in San Diego, by Louise McCullough, director of stroke research at the University of Connecticut Health Center. The story can be read in its entirety so let me offer a few highlights.

The crux of Szabo’s story is that the fetal cells that remain in the mother mouse’s body appear to act like stem cells when they race to repair damage caused by a stroke in the mother’s body. This raises intriguing (but as yet still unclear) possibilities.

McCullough studied how fetal cells operated in the mother mouse who had suffered a stroke. Within three days they clustered around the area of the stroke. Szabo writes,

“But these fetal cells were more than bystanders, McCullough says. They also began dividing and giving rise to the types of cells that line blood vessel walls, as if trying to form new blood vessels to restore blood flow to the injured brain.

“What scientists don’t yet know, is whether the fetal cells were clustered around the stroke site by coincidence, or if they really were acting like stem cells attempting to regenerate tissue. McCullough presented her research in abstract form. She has not yet published the full paper in a peer-reviewed journal.”

Other scientists, working independently, have seen similar behavior in mice with heart failure. Szabo writes

“The mice who recovered best were ones in which fetal cells integrated into their heart tissue, says [V.K.] Gadi, who wasn’t involved in McCullough’s research. In a study in humans, researchers found maternal cells at work in a diabetic child, apparently trying to repair insulin-producing cells, he says.

Naturally, others are examining what role fetal cells may play in diseases such as cancer.

Szabo raises another fascinating possibility: that, like stem cells, “Fetal cells appear able to change into whatever specific type of cell is needed, McCullough says. So fetal cells in a mother with liver damage could transform into liver cells.”
