Campaign to Mobilize TEN MILLION Americans to VOTE PRO-LIFE in 2014!

Campaign to Mobilize TEN
MILLION
Americans to
VOTE PRO-LIFE in 2014!

“Bishops can’t tell politicians what to do, but Catholic voters can!”

Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia

January 14, 2014

Your right to actively oppose the injustice of abortion is in grave jeopardy.

To protect and preserve it, you must take immediate action:

Click here and COMPLETE the “National Survey of American Voters.”

And CLICK HERE to make a contribution to Priests for Life’s important “Campaign to Mobilize TEN MILLION Americans to VOTE in 2014.”

Both actions are critical if you and I are to protect our right to speak out on behalf of the youngest members of our human family and fight for their God-given right to life.

That’s because those who currently hold the reins of power in our government are decidedly pro-abortion!

If we are to have any chance of ending America’s abortion holocaust and protecting our First Amendment right to freedom of religion and freedom of speech …

… we must have the wisdom to elect public servants who know and respect the Constitution.

But even more importantly, we need public servants who know the difference between serving the public and killing the public.

Those who can’t tell the difference don’t belong in public office!

And that’s the message Priests for Life will be repeating from now until Election Day 2014.

Voting is both a right and a duty… and our Church teaches us that it’s one of the most important ways and one of the greatest opportunities to advance the culture of life!

This November the entire House of Representatives and a third of the US Senate – as well as governors and state legislators across the nation … and countless other public officials – will be asking for the votes of Americans, including Catholic Americans.

Rest assured Priests for Life is going all out to fire up American citizens to vote pro-life in 2014.

But we need you to CLICK HERE and make as large a donation to Priests for Life as you can so that we can carry out all that we have planned for the critical 2014 mid-term elections.

Your dollars will help Priests for Life:

1) Launch the “Campaign to Mobilize TEN MILLION American voters in 2014.”  This massive, nationwide, grassroots effort is designed with one purpose in mind: To get pro-life Americans out of their homes and into the voting booth on Tuesday, November 4, 2014!

2) As part of that Campaign, Priests for Life is conducting a nationwide “National Survey of American Voters” that will show candidates that God’s People actively and enthusiastically support the cause of life.

3) Finally, the Priests for Life staff is putting the finishing touches on our “2014 Political Responsibility Action Plan” which will include:

  • A massive voter education effort all across the country
  • Nationwide voter registration drives
  • The distribution of non-partisan “Voter Guides”
  • Publishing a special “Voting With a Clear Conscience” booklet
  • Maintaining the “PoliticalResponsibility.com” website
  • Giving wide distribution to key Church documents on voting; especially the US Bishops’ Living the Gospel of Life
And come November 2014, conduct “Get Out the Vote” drives

If Priests for Life is able to carry out all of our plans, then I’m confident that our nation will take a major step forward to protecting the unborn as a result of the 2014 elections!

You have a vital role to play in this work.

First …

Click here and make your voice heard through your answers on the “National Survey of American Voters.”

It’s important you do this because a majority of the members of the mainstream news media have a pro-abortion bias.  And because they do, they want to represent our pro-life position as one that is unpopular with the public and a liability to the candidates.  They routinely twist facts and take quotes out of the context in order to portray our pro-life position in the worst light possible.

All this in an unbridled effort to achieve two objectives:

•To impose silence on anyone who wants to speak out against the injustice of abortion.

•To intimidate pro-life men and women from even running for office.

Your Survey answers are needed to show that it’s okay to be PROUDLY PRO-LIFE!  People do not have to run from their pro-life convictions when they run for office.

But in order to do that and counter the pro-abortion drumbeat coming out of most of the major news media outlets, I need your voice.

And that’s exactly what your “National Survey of American Voters” will give me.

Once I have your Survey answers I will tally them with all the others I receive and spread the news far and wide that, just as America is pro-life, so are America’s voters!

Which brings me to the second action I need you to take.

Please CLICK HERE and make as large a donation to Priests for Life as you can so that we can carry out our critical “Campaign to Mobilize TEN MILLION American voters in 2014.”

It will cost Priests for Life literally millions of dollars to implement everything we have planned for the historic 2014 mid-term elections … including widespread distribution of our Survey!

But we have no choice.

The People of Life must show up at the polls and make our votes count!

That’s because of what our bishops warned back in 1998:

We get the public officials we deserve.  Their virtue – or lack thereof – is a judgment not only on them, but on us.

That’s a direct quote from their document “Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics.”  And it’s why Archbishop Chaput made the statement that I quoted for you at the top of this email:

“Bishops can’t tell politicians what to do, but Catholic voters can!”

And if ever Catholic and pro-life voters needed to tell our elected leaders what to do, it’s NOW!

The reason why can be summed up in one word: ObamaCare!

As an individual, Obamacare is a direct threat to your First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.  That’s because, as I’ve mentioned to you on many occasions, ObamaCare forces you and all people of good will to violate your sincerely held belief about the sanctity of human life and become a direct participant in the killing of our innocent unborn brothers and sisters.

As a nation, ObamaCare is the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v Wade!

And this in spite of the fact that a significant majority of Americans OPPOSE both ObamaCare and abortion-on-demand!  All the polls show this.

That’s why Priests for Life is actively working to make health care in America ABORTION-FREE!!!

But that won’t happen until American voters elect men and women who respect every citizen’s inalienable RIGHT TO LIFE!

Which is why the 2014 mid-term elections are so important.

The only way we to rid the nation of ObamaCare’s abortion mandates – along with all the other assaults on the innocent child in the womb – is to:

1. Encourage rock-solid pro-life men and women to run for elected office.

2. Get the People of Life actively involved in the election process so that we give our nation leaders – especially in Congress – that will uphold every American citizen’s GOD-GIVEN and FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO LIFE!

That’s what it’s going to take to end America’s abortion holocaust.

Which is why I’ve sent you this email and included you in Priests for Life’s “National Survey of American Voters.”

As I told you, your answers will give public officials and other leaders the assurance they need that the People of Life have their backs.  That they can profess their pro-life convictions without fear and without feeling as though they have to apologize for them.  And that they can boldly remind all Americans that abortion corrupts our entire society … including the economy!

So right now, before you go on to your next email:

Click here and complete your “Survey”.  It will only take you a few minutes.

Then CLICK HERE and help Priests for Life:

1) Send out more “National Survey of American Voters” ballots.  Our goal is TEN MILLION completed Surveys!

2) Carry out our “2014 Political Responsibility Action Plan”:

  • A massive voter education effort all across the country
  • Nationwide voter registration drives
  • The distribution of non-partisan “Voter Guides”
  • Publishing a special “Voting With a Clear Conscience” booklet
  • Maintaining the “PoliticalResponsibility.com” website
  • Giving wide distribution to key Church documents on voting; especially the US Bishops’ Living the Gospel of Life
  • And come November 2014, conduct “Get Out the Vote” drives

The cost to carry out these two major projects will run well into the millions of dollars.

But as you know from my prior letters, Priests for Life doesn’t have nearly that much money right now.

And we never will unless you choose to CLICK HERE right now and help fund Priests for Life’s “Campaign to Mobilize TEN MILLION Americans to VOTE in 2014.”

I say that because you are one of Priests for Life’s most loyal and most dedicated partners.

If I can’t convince you to get behind this massive nationwide effort to give America political leaders who know the difference between serving the public and killing the public, then it’s unlikely that I’ll be able to convince people who don’t know me to do so.

In pressing you as I am to help, let me assure you that the dollars you give to Priests for Life will be among the most effective dollars you will invest in the 2014 elections.

But don’t take my word for that.  Here’s what Dr. Deal Hudson – a long-time warrior in the fight to end abortion – says about us:

“Priests for Life has the most effective political impact of any Catholic apostolate in our country.”

At the risk of trumpeting our own horn, Dr. Hudson is right.  So please, right now, while you’re still reading my email:

Click here and complete your “National Survey of American Voters.”

And CLICK HERE to make a contribution that will allow Priests for Life to carry out our “Campaign to Mobilize TEN MILLION Americans to VOTE in 2014.”

Thank you for doing this.

You are a true pro-life champion, to be sure.

And I thank God for having sent you to us and the Priests for Life family.  May He richly bless you for the many sacrifices you make on behalf of His innocent unborn children.

Sincerely,

pavonenew.jpg

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director
Priests for Life

P.S. As you consider how large a contribution to make, keep these two points in mind:

First, in addition to conducting our Survey online, Priests for Life is also mailing Surveys to people all across the country.  It costs Priests for Life about $1 for each Survey we print, mail and tabulate.  That includes the cost to publicize Survey results to news outlets and candidates running for office.  That means that for every $10 you send Priests for Life, we can get TEN PEOPLE to take part in our Survey and let worthy pro-life men and women know that the People of Life have got their backs.

Second, every item in our “Election 2014 Action Plan” is just that … a “planned” event or project.  Whether or not those “planned” events become reality is up to you and your fellow Priests for Life supporters.  That’s because no matter how well-conceived our plans, they cannot come to fruition without your financial support.

For both those reasons I urge you to CLICK HERE and be as generous as you possibly can today … and throughout 2014.  Thank you and may God bless you.

We Won’t Kill Anybody: Overcoming the Civil Rights Disconnect

Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director, Priests for Life

Our nation again approaches the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, and I will again be with Dr. King’s family on that day.

Many people understand the connection between the civil rights movement and the pro-life movement thanks to the work of Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. Her father, Rev. A.D. Williams King, was Martin’s brother. She began working with me fulltime at Priests for Life as our Director of African-American Outreach in 2004.

She and I have been together with her family at many events both happy and sad, including the annual observances of the national Martin Luther King Jr. holiday at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, and the 50th anniversary celebration of the “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. On these occasions, we have been privileged to enjoy some of the most soaring oratory of our day, and some of the most articulate speeches about civil rights, justice, equality and freedom that one can ever hear. Time and time again, I have been energized and inspired by these speeches, and moved to recommit myself to the pursuit of justice and equality for every human being.

But therein also comes the pain and a glaring disconnect. The deepest human emotion and commitment to justice is evoked as speaker after speaker decries violence in the streets, senseless shootings, vast numbers of young people in prison, social inequities and economic injustices, and the horrors of war — to mention a few. But what is never mentioned is the violence of abortion, and the need to secure justice and equality for the child in the womb. Alveda and I have both felt the disconnect so intensely at these gatherings that, amidst the loud applause, we sometimes say out loud, “And the children too! Don’t forget the children in the womb!” We were indeed gratified when, on a single occasion (the MLK Holiday observance at Ebenezer in January of 2013), the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, in his keynote address, mentioned the need to protect all life, including the womb.

That is the kind of consistency that then gives credibility to the cry for justice and equality in all the other contexts that are mentioned.

At that recent 50th anniversary celebration, we heard the assertions,  “There are still too many lives taken by violence… I dream of a world that does not hold anyone back…We can’t move ahead while some people are falling behind…We must protect the most fundamental rights we have…” No reference was made to the right to life of the youngest children.

And hence the pro-life movement declares today, “There are indeed too many lives taken by the violence of abortion… We dream of the world that does not hold the unborn back…We can’t move ahead while children in the womb are falling behind…We must protect the most fundamental right we have, the right to life.”

On Christmas of 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. preached the following words: “The next thing we must be concerned about if we are to have peace on earth and good will toward men is the nonviolent affirmation of the sacredness of all human life. Every man is somebody because he is a child of God…Man is more than …whirling electrons or a wisp of smoke …. Man is a child of God, made in His image, and therefore must be respected as such….And when we truly believe in the sacredness of human personality, we won’t exploit people, we won’t trample over people with the iron feet of oppression, we won’t kill anybody.”

Indeed, we won’t kill anybody, including the children in the womb.

Seeing is Believing: ‘Forced Confrontation’ and the Holocaust

Seeing is believing: ‘forced confrontation’ and the Holocaust

BY JONATHON VAN MAREN

  • Fri Jan 10, 2014 13:21 EST

Seeing is believing, the old adage goes. Often the only thing capable of denting humanity’s monumental ability to bunker down in a state of denial is indisputable, visual evidence. When cruel things take place on a massive and institutionalized scale behind closed doors and out of sight in societies clinging to the tattered mantle of “civilized,” only jarring confrontation, history tells us, can shatter the delusions we cling to. If the ear won’t listen, tell it to the eye.

File 2386That was the topic of a Slate article that came out some time ago, featuring a photo of German prisoners of war watching footage of concentration camps. “As part of the Allied policy of postwar denazification,” Rebecca Onion writes, “’forced confrontation’ brought Germans face-to-face with the worst works of the Third Reich. Confrontation took multiple forms, as American and British military officials adapted their tactics based on local conditions.” These “forced confrontations included forcing Germans to watch video footage of concentration camps, marching townspeople past the charred corpses of their former neighbors, and posting photos of the atrocities in public places. Imagery, the evidence of what had actually been done to a brutally dehumanized and coldly executed group of human beings, was central in re-educating a population that had been “educated” to think that Jews, and many others, were not fully human.

The Allies were careful to show the Germans that the destruction of these millions of lives was a collective responsibility, something that each member of the society conducting the killings was partially responsible for. In Legacies of Dachau: The Uses and Abuses of a Concentration Camp, Harold Marcuse notes that huge placards showing piles of charred corpses were hung up “in cities, towns, and Military Offices everywhere” with titles such as “YOU ARE GUILTY OF THIS.” As many historical works have since proven (Daniel Goldhagen’s Hitler’s Willing Executioners being one of the most extensive and thorough), they were—although reactions among recipients of this message varied widely.

Click “like” if you are PRO-LIFE

To come face to face with such horrors, to see the careless heaps of shattered lives and broken people, was too much for many to bear. Even a veteran soldier like General Dwight Eisenhower struggled to comprehend what had happened.

“I have never felt able to describe my emotional reaction when I first came face to face with indisputable evidence of Nazi brutality and ruthless disregard of every shred of decency,” he wrote, “…I visited every nook and cranny of the camp because I felt it my duty to be in a position from then on to testify at first hand about these things in case there ever grew up at home the belief or assumption that the stories of Nazi brutality were just propaganda.”

Fmr. Spokeswoman for Pro-Abortion Foundation Now Works for…the Girl Scouts

Fmr. spokeswoman for pro-abortion foundation now works for…the Girl Scouts

BY BEN JOHNSON

January 10, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The woman who now handles the Girl Scouts’ communications used to have another employer: an abortion lobby think tank founded by Gloria Steinem.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Kelly Parisi has served as vice president of communications at the Girl Scouts of the USA since last July. But her last job, before her two-month gap in employment, was as vice president of marketing and communications for the Ms. Foundation for Women. The foundation – which Steinem founded in 1973 – lists “Reproductive Rights and Health” (which includes support for taxpayer-funded abortion) first on its list of issues.

Parisi, who has a minor in women’s studies, said she was thrilled to work at the foundation, because she was “able to channel my outrage at women’s inequality and gender injustice into action every day.

“The last two years have generated record numbers of restrictions on reproductive rights across the country,” shesaid. “Women are constantly under attack.”

At the Ms. Foundation, Parisi served on a five-member “executive team” that guided policy. A report she contributed to last year called for the “repeal [of] state and federal legislative barriers to abortion access,” granting military women access to abortion, implementing the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare), expanding “family planning” funding, and teaching “comprehensive” sex education in the public schools.

It blasted “so-called ‘conscience clauses’ that allow providers and companies to cite religious reasons for refusing to provide contraception, abortion and sterilization.”

Parisi’s report – which revealed the feminist group was funded in part by George Soros’ Open Society Foundation and the Tides Foundation – criticized the Hyde Amendment, abstinence-based sex education classes, and crisis pregnancy centers that allegedly “mislead or harass women with false information about abortion.”

Parisi had an earlier stint as director of communications at the Ms. Foundation for four years, from August 1998 to January 2003. In between, she worked at the at the Children’s Health Fund, founded by liberal songwriter Paul Simon, an organization that also has ties to abortion advocacy.

Parisi had only been at her new post with the Girl Scouts of the USA for a few months when she ignited controversy over the Scouts seeming to honor her former employer. Just before Christmas, the Scouts retweeted a Huffington Post story that named Wendy Davis and Gloria Steinem among the “Incredible Ladies Who Should Be Women of the Year for 2013.”

Parisi defended the tweet, telling CNSNews.com, “Our Twitter bio states that a retweet does not equal an endorsement. Our sharing a link was not to endorse any of the women featured, but to highlight the source’s acknowledgment of women who made a mark in 2013.”

“As the world’s premiere leadership organization for girls, we are charged with developing girls of courage, confidence and character,” she said. “We hope that all girls have the courage to make the their voices heard and welcome respectful discourse about what qualities a woman of the year should have.”

Parisi’s own Twitter account, under the handle @bossladykp, is locked and can be read only with her permission.

However, the Scouts’ ties to Planned Parenthood and enthusiasm for Steinem precede Parisi’s tenure. A 2012 report on “healthy media” on the Girl Scouts’ website promotes the book and websiteMy Little Red Book, “a collection of short narratives written by women about their first period.” The reviewers wrote “we like it” because it features “[s]tories from women of different ages and backgrounds, including renowned authors and activists such as Gloria Steinem” and pro-abortion children’s book author Judy Blume. (In 2009, Blume wrote a fundraising e-mail asking donors to send money to Planned Parenthood in honor of Mother’s Day.)

Girl Scout CEO Kathy Clonginer told the Today Show in 2004 that the organization partners “with Planned Parenthood organizations across the country to bring information-based sex education programs to girls.” In 2012, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi describes the Girl Scouts’ relationship with Planned Parenthood as “very valuable.”

The group’s advocacy for LGBT causes has also undermined its wholesome image for many. In 2011, the group announced it would admit a seven-year-old biological boy as a Girl Scout, because he considers himself a transgender “girl.” In July, more than 90 Girl Scouts marched in San Francisco’s Gay Pride Parade for the first time ever.

The online news service Breitbart has noted the ravaging effects social liberalism has had on the organization. Girl Scout councils have reduced from 312 to 112, and the group has lost nearly one-third of its funding from 2007-2011. During that time, contributions dipped by a massive $44 million.

Abortion Facility is Once Again Located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

January 11, 2014
Dear Friend,

It is with great sadness that I must let you know an abortion facility is once again located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.   The facility is called Northeast Ohio Women’s Center, and is located at 2127 State Road, in the same location as the Capital Care Network which was closed down last year by the Ohio Department of Health due to extensive violations.

The Ohio Department of Health reports a license pending for this facility, however, the website for the Northeast Ohio Women’s Center states that they are currently accepting appointments 7 days a week to medically terminate pregnancies of 5 to 12.5 weeks gestation.  They further state that they will be offering full services (surgical abortions) during the first quarter of this year.

Public records and the firm’s website indicate that owner/operator of this abortion facility is Dr. David Burkons, an abortionist who is listed as having performed abortions at the Planned Parenthood location in Bedford, Ohio.  Business filings from the Ohio Secretary of State show that this limited liability corporation was filed on January 1 of this year.

It goes without saying that we must once again mobilize and stand together to show our community and this business that we WILL NOT TOLERATE the killing of innocent human lives.  We need to pray, stand peaceful vigil, provide counseling and lifesaving alternatives to those who seek these services, and do all that we legally can do to prevent this evil from occurring not only in Cuyahoga Falls, but everywhere.

We were obviously taken by surprise, but that will not stop us.  As we formulate an action plan, we will keep you informed through action alerts and through information on our website.  In the meantime, please pray for God to change the hearts and minds of abortion minded individuals so that this abortion facility and others will be closed forever.   Please reply to this e-mail if you would like to be part of a vigil schedule at this location.

For Life,

Denise Leipold

Today, the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice received key testimony in support of the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7), legislation introduced by Congressmen Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-Il.). H.R. 7 would permanently prohibit subsidies for abortion and health insurance coverage of abortion in federal programs – both within longstanding federal programs and within the health care law signed by President Obama in 2010.

In her testimony, Professor Helen Alvare of George Mason University School of Law, asserted that it “serves the interests of American women for the federal government once and for all to remove itself from the business of abortion funding.” First, she explained that Americans in general, especially women, oppose government funding of abortion, and that abortion funding for the poor is favored more by the well-off than by the poor themselves (a reality she called a “particularly unpleasant fact”). Women don’t view abortion as a “public good” deserving of funding, according to Alvare. She then pointed to the federal government’s own statements and documents as evidence that abortion is not part of a genuine “women’s health” agenda.

Richard M. Doerflinger

Richard M. Doerflinger

Richard Doerflinger testified on behalf of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in favor of writing into permanent law “a policy on which there has been strong popular and congressional agreement for over 35 years” going back to the 1976 enactment of the Hyde Amendment. He submitted testimony that explained that abortion rates substantially increase when government funding is provided, citing a study by the Guttmacher Institute (the former research arm of Planned Parenthood) as evidence that “Medicaid-eligible women whose states provide Medicaid funding for abortion have more than twice the abortion rate of eligible women whose states do not provide such funding.”

Both Alvare and Doerflinger testified that the U.S. Supreme Court’s caselaw recognizes abortion as inherently different from other medical procedures, because as the Court put it, “no other procedure involves the purposeful termination of a potential human life.” Doerflinger cited Supreme Court decisions, going back to 1977, that viewed the funding of abortion as separate and distinct from the constitutional “right” to abortion. “Even courts insisting on a constitutional ‘right’ to abortion have said this alleged right ‘implies no limitation on the authority of a State to make a value judgment favoring childbirth over abortion, and to implement that judgment by the allocation of public funds,’” Doerflinger said.

Nevertheless, despite the longstanding support of the public, the Congress, and the courts, for restrictions on the use of government funds to support abortion, NARAL has issued an alert to its supporters in opposition to H.R. 7, asserting: “Our goal is to stop this bill from coming up for a vote – and we can do that if we show enough members of the House that this bill will have huge political ramifications. Tell your lawmaker that you demand the House not bring H.R. 7 up for a vote.”

H.R. 7 currently has 145 co-sponsors. To view an always-current list of co-sponsors of H.R. 7, click here. The Senate companion bill, introduced by Senator Roger Wicker (R-Ms.), is S. 946, which has 24 co-sponsors. To view an always-current list of co-sponsors of S. 946, click here.

Carolina Sepe dies 16 days after giving birth while in a coma

Carolina Sepe was 10 weeks pregnant when an angry neighbor burst into her family’s home in Lauro near Naples on August 25 and opened fire with a pistol. Sepe, along with other member of her family, were innocent bystanders when Domenico Aschettino turned his wrath on them after killing Sepe’s father, Vincenzo Sepe.

Shot in the head, Sepe was left in a coma. Last month, doctors safely delivered her baby, by that time 27 weeks gestational age, by caesarean section.

Tragically, however, Sepe died on Saturday, according to The Daily Telegraph, 16 days after the birth of her baby girl. Maria Liliana weighed 1.1 kg (approximately 2.5 pounds) at birth. She is on life support but said to be in stable condition.

Compounding the tragedy is that Sepe’s father and grandmother were killed and other family members wounded in the rampage. Carolina’s husband, Giampiero Siniscalchi who managed to escape with the couple’s two year old son, Eliseo, was convinced his wife’s condition was improving and that she would regain consciousness. (He’d left his job to visit Carolina daily.)

“I recorded a video of Eliseo on my phone and when I made (Carolina) listen to his voice, I cried,” he told Corriere della Sera. “I did it again and she cried. I am sure my wife can hear me and hear the voice of our son. I am sure she understands. She cannot communicate or move, but she can understand. She can heal and come home.”

But as The Daily Telegraph’s Tom Kington explained, by mid-December, Sepe’s vital signs had grown weaker. Kington quoted Franco Paradiso, the director of the Calderelli hospital, who said, “The patient’s condition had worsened and so we opted to intervene” before it was too late.

Aschettino had argued with Vincenzo Sepe with over a car accident. Arrested and deemed mentally sound, Aschettino has since tried to commit suicide in jail.

Jahi McMath ‘Improving,’ and ‘Doing Very Well’ after Receiving Treatment, family says

Jahi McMath ‘improving,’ and ‘doing very well’ after receiving treatment, family says

BY KIRSTEN ANDERSEN

OAKLAND, CA, January 9, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A 13-year-old girl declared “brain dead” by doctors at Oakland’s Children’s Hospital after suffering cardiac arrest following surgery to treat sleep apnea is said to be “improving” after receiving a tracheostomy and feeding tube.

“She is doing very well, and now getting the treatment she should have gotten 28 days ago,” family attorney Christopher Dolan said via Twitter. “Doctors are optimistic that her condition has stabilized.”

Jahi McMath underwent both surgeries at an undisclosed Catholic medical center after her family reached a legal settlement with Children’s Hospital allowing them to remove her from their facility.

Previously, they had begged the hospital to allow the procedures to be performed there, where Jahi had remained on a ventilator following her cardiac arrest on December 9, but the hospital refused, saying they would not allow medical procedures to be performed on a “deceased” patient.

California defines a loss of brain activity as legal death, but both Jahi’s family and Dr. Paul Byrne, who examined Jahi while she was at Children’s, said that despite the hospital’s insistence that Jahi was “brain dead,” her heart was beating on its own, her organs were functioning and she was responding with movements to family members.

The “post-Roe” generations: caring and compassionate and wanting to protect the rights of the most vulnerable

I had the opportunity in recent months to speak on the campuses of both Princeton University, as a guest of the American Whig-Cliosophic Society, and the University of Dallas, as a guest of Crusaders for Life. These are two very different campuses, but both had wonderful, sincere students with similar questions.

Many of them wanted to know how they can impact their generation in favor of life. One young man wanted to know if he should even get involved in what is touted as “a woman’s issue.” Another wanted to know how he could influence people since he isn’t very outgoing and comfortable with bringing up the issue of abortion for discussion.

One young lady already has a plan to get involved in politics and hopes to end up in Congress. Others wanted to know about internship possibilities with NRLC or wanted more information on our summer Academy, or “pro-life boot camp” as I like to call it.

It is very encouraging to spend time with the “post-Roe” generations. They are caring and compassionate, wanting to protect the rights of the most vulnerable. They are bold and eager to make a difference.

But many of them also need guidance and education. They need to hear from, and maybe even be mentored by adult pro-lifers who will help them understand the issues and how to respond to pro-abortion challenges.

Those who have been in the pro-life movement for a while can help young people by showing them what opportunities are available to influence their local community and encouraging them to take a stand. In return, we need to be open to new ideas and new strengths brought to the Movement by young people with fresh energy. Because we have done something a particular way for several years doesn’t mean it can’t be done differently, or maybe even better.

If you don’t have active young people in your chapter or local group, find ways to reach out and get them involved. The post-Roe generations want to make a difference.
