Abortion in the 2014 Elections: revealing the pro-abortionists’ extreme positions

By Karen Cross, National Right to Life Political Director

VotefuturereOn November 4, the American people will decide whether the House remains in pro-life hands and whether the Senate will continue to be dominated by—and led by–pro-abortion Democrats. In the weeks that remain it is vital that pro-abortion candidates’ extreme positions do not go unanswered.

In a recent election, I was perplexed when I heard the pro-life candidate, when asked about abortion, say, “Abortion is not going to be an issue in this campaign.”

Not an issue? Are you kidding me? The nation’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, was and is making abortion an issue. The pro-abortion group, NARAL, was making abortion an issue. And his pro-abortion opponent was making abortion an issue. As a rule pro-abortionists make absurd charges against their pro-life challenger that most media outlets not only do not question but amplify.

This or any other pro-life candidate, of course, must not allow the charges made by their pro-abortion opponent to go unanswered. But they must also expose their opponent’s extreme out-of-touch views on abortion.

Because of the makeup of the two major national parties, in almost all head-to-head cases on the national level we have a pro-life Republican versus a pro-abortion Democrat. And it is the pro-life candidate whose views are in touch with mainstream America.

In a recent poll conducted by The Polling Company, only 8% of the public agreed that “Abortion should be legal for any reason at any time during a woman’s pregnancy,” and yet this is the outrageous position held by EMILY’s List, a prominent pro-abortion PAC that supports only female Democratic candidates who support its extremist position.

And, this is the out-of-touch position held by the vast majority of Democrats in Congress.

Need I remind you, it was the Democrats in Congress who gave us Obama’s massive pro-abortion, pro-rationing health care law in 2010?

Did you know that in 2012, during the 112th Congress, 161 Democrats in the U.S. House voted to allow sex-selection abortions to continue?? One of the four things the bill said that a person could not knowingly do is use “force or threat of force” for the purpose of coercing sex-selection abortions.

In 2013, during the current 113th Congress, 190 Democrats in the House voted against the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, a bill that would protect unborn children after 20 weeks, when they are capable of experiencing excruciating pain during their abortions.

And, not one Democrat in the U.S. Senate has even co-sponsored this lifesaving bill.

Currently, 128 Democratic House members are so extreme they are co-sponsors of H.R.3471, a bill so radical it has been referred to by NRLC as the “Abortion Without Limits Until Birth Act.” This bill, if enacted, would invalidate nearly all state limitations on abortion, including laws that protect individuals and private hospitals from being compelled to provide or participate in abortions. It would even invalidate the “Pain-Capable” laws enacted in ten states, laws that would protect the unborn child from abortion after 20 weeks.  By this point, if not before, the baby can experience great pain during an abortion. The Senate version, S.1696, has been co-sponsored by 35 Democrats in the U.S. Senate.

The vast majority of voters do NOT agree with their shameful pro-abortion positions!

A couple of years ago, we had the pleasure of watching pro-abortion House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hand over the gavel to pro-life Speaker John Boehner. Now, under Speaker Boehner’s leadership, the U.S. House of Representatives is passing pro-life legislation!

Unfortunately, when pro-life legislation passes the House, it is being blocked in the U.S. Senate by the current Democratic leadership.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has challenged the Democratic leadership to place the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act on the Senate agenda. Yet, so far, the Democratic Senate majority leader has failed to do so.

Moreover, 47 Democrats, along with two independents who caucus with the Democrats in the U.S. Senate, are attempting to pass S.J.Res. 19, a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow Congress or any state legislature to prohibit organizations such as National Right to Life from criticizing elected officials, publishing their voting records, or doing anything else that could “influence elections.” In the House, 118 lawmakers – all Democrats – have co-sponsored the companion resolution (H. J. Res. 119).

In 2014, we have a duty to expose the extreme positions of pro-abortion candidates and incumbent House members.

We must strengthen pro-life support in the U.S. House and Senate, so that we can effectively work against Obama’s pro-abortion agenda, and we can continue with the goal of protecting our most vulnerable citizens — unborn children and those who are medically dependent or disabled.

The “coolest” baby yet—and not even born!

By Dave Andrusko

thumbsupunbornI first saw this on Labor Day, although the ultrasound was actually posted August 28. For those of us of a certain age (old), the instant reaction was “The Fonz.” He was the iconic character played by Henry Winkler on the comedy “Happy Days” whose signature gesture was the thumbs up.

Like so much on the Internet, you never know what will go viral. The massive attention came when the ultrasound was posted on Reddit by the brother of the baby’s father, who had originally posted the baby’s ultrasound on his Facebook page.

Brandon Hopkins, the baby’s father, told HLN that the ultrasound photo was taken early last week. After his brother posted on Reddit, “My brother called me and said ‘Your babies are famous!’” Hopkins said.

And get this–his wife is actually pregnant with twins! (The babies are due next January.) The couple lives in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

As someone commented, if the baby is imitating Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli, the epitome of cool (at least between 1974 and 1984), the baby can only be the coolest baby yet—and he/she is not even born!

We often discuss the impact of ultrasounds on women facing crisis pregnancies. What, I wonder, would be the response if a mom saw this?

LIVE ACTION

a new media movement for life

Dear Friend,

It’s important that everyone know about Planned Parenthood’s status as the number-one abortion corporation in the world, and that people come to terms with what abortion really is: the barbaric killing of a child.  But equally important is that our parents, our teachers, and all our nation’s citizens come to terms with Planned Parenthood’s radical agenda for those children its abortionists don’t manage to kill.   We’ve been very encouraged by the response, both local and national, that our SexEd investigation has received on this latter point.  Local ABC and NBC reporters in Indiana interviewed parents on the street, showing them our footage from a Planned Parenthood facility in their city.  The response was pretty strong – one woman said, “I can’t even degrade animals in that way.”  And publications including the New York Post, the Colorado Springs Gazette, and The Hill have posted op-eds by Lila Rose, Live Action’s president, that garnered a flood of comments and a vigorous debate.   National outlets have also dedicated considerable coverage to Planned Parenthood’s dangerous sex education agenda.  You can click the images below to watch Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly discussing our investigation, or click here to see how Planned Parenthood tells teenage girls to let themselves be whipped, beaten, and asphyxiated in the bedroom.  And here is a segment from CNN’s S.E. Cupp.  Our SexEd videos have garnered well over 650,000 views on YouTube.  Our petition to defund Planned Parenthood has more than 30,000 signatures.  People care about this.   We’ve also gotten a great response from the grassroots on our letter-writing campaign – we’ve made it really easy for you to express your concern to local legislators and papers.  If you haven’t taken advantage of this resource, now is the time!  We won’t see effective change until the average moms, dads, teachers, and concerned citizens across the country personally take action.
We’re so grateful for everything you’re doing to support the culture of life, and the innocence and integrity of our nation’s kids.  Please keep Live Action in your prayers as we continue to expose Planned Parenthood’s lies and abuse!

For truth and life,

Drew Belsky Communications Director Live Action

Lend your Talents to the Unborn

SUSAN B ANTHONY LIST

On this Labor Day weekend I am so grateful for you and the work you do for life. When you lend your talents to the unborn and their mothers by volunteering at pregnancy centers, praying at abortion facilities, attending the March for Life, lobbying your legislators, volunteering for and supporting pro-life candidates, and so much more, you are truly working a labor of love.

And our hard work is paying off! The number of abortions in America is at an all-time low, pregnancy centers vastly outnumber abortion facilities, and an unprecedented number of pro-life laws swept through the states while the U.S. House passed the federal Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

As you know, there is still much more to be done – especially as we head into the homestretch to the 2014 mid-term elections. I want you to know your SBA List has been, and will continue to lead the charge to elect pro-life leaders and pass pro-life legislation to protect unborn babies and their mothers.

Happy Labor Day!

‘There’s the skull’: Esquire reporter gets rare, gruesome look at real-life abortion

Lauren Enriquez

By Lauren Enriquez

A recent story at Esquire chronicled the abortion practice of Willie Parker, an abortionist who commutes from Chicago to Mississippi to commit abortions at the state’s last abortion mill. Mississippi is devoid of any abortionists of its own who are capable of obtaining hospital admitting privileges, a requirement now mandated by law in several states. Consequently, Parker — who boasts an unusually clean record for an abortionist, and was able to obtain privileges nearby — travels to the South to fill in.

Esquire calls Parker’s practice a “ministry,” playing off of the abortionist’s professed Christianity. The author chose to conclude the piece with a chilling look into the heart of Parker’s so-called ministry, following him through the process of examining fetal remains immediately after each abortion.

Reporters have rarely been invited to view this process. Those who have witnessed abortion first-hand report varied reactions, mostly horror and helplessness; but across the board is the shock that abortion is not what they thought. The tidy phrases and semantics (“reproductive justice,” “products of conception,” even “abortion”) did not prepare them for the reality of dismemberment, gore, tears, pain, “little rib cages.”

It is impossible for reporters to walk away from the experience with any illusions about what abortion really is. When they use terms in their subsequent writing such as “reproductive rights” after witnessing what that actually means, they can undoubtedly visualize the severed limbs and crushed bodies that comprise that term at its core. Initially, the Esquire reporter opts for a cold, clinical tone to recount the experience:

After each procedure, [Parker] carries the large glass vacuum bottle into an adjoining room. There he pours the fetal tissue from the bottle into an ordinary kitchen strainer and runs tap water over it, then empties the strainer into a clear Pyrex dish and examines the tissue on a light table.

Among the “uterine contents” that passed over Parker’s light table that day were three sacs, the tiny cocoons containing three small lives that, moments earlier, were nestled in their mother’s womb burgeoning with triplets. The reporter seems unfazed. Then a fetus at six weeks’ gestation that he describes as “lumps of red tissue.” Still, little emotion is conveyed in the writing. But then, the corpse of a nine-week-old fetus is sloughed onto the table:

But then he brings in one that’s nine weeks and there’s a fetus. He points out the scattered parts. “There’s the skull, what is going to be the fetal skull. And there are the eye sockets.”

Floating near the top of the dish are two tiny arms with two tiny hands.

The reporter admits that his invitation into the innermost rooms of that facility was rare. “But today [Parker] made a conscious decision not to hide the truth,” he says, tellingly. The truth. Parker calls this truth a thing that he hopes “people can deal with” at some point. He defaults to bemoaning the “stigma” of abortion — a stigma that is enshrined not by the pro-life movement, but by his own.

Click “like” if you are PRO-LIFE!

The stigma proliferates when abortionists lobby against sonogram laws that force abortionists to provide women with the full knowledge of what they are doing before they go through with an abortion. Abortionists do not even want women, who are typically unable to see the postmortem bodies of their babies,  seeing the living, non-gruesome version fluttering on an ultrasound screen. Why? Because it would (rightly) stigmatize their profession in the eyes of their clients. At the end of the day, the abortion industry will protect the stigma fiercely, because failing to do so would put them out of business.

But the reporter admits that, at this point, “it’s hard not to look at those tiny fingers, no bigger than the tip of a toothpick.” Is Parker as disturbed as he is by this experience on a daily basis?

When I recognize whole fetal parts? No. Because I’m not deluded about what this whole process is.

One Less Surgical Abortion Mill in Cleveland

OHIO RIGHT TO LIFE

One Less Surgical Abortion Mill in Cleveland
9 Abortion Mills Left in Ohio

Dear Pro-life Ohio,
Last month, we learned that Cleveland Surgi-Center, one of Cleveland’s three abortion facilities, closed shop, appearing to move to another location.
After Denise Leipold, executive director of Right to Life of Northeast Ohio, confirmed their new location in Warrensville Heights, we called the new location to discover what services they are providing.
Here’s what we learned:
– The new location is not doing surgical abortions.
– It serves as the first appointment center for those considering abortion and sends them to Akron Women’s Medical Group for the abortion.
– The first appointment costs $225.
– They say they are not doing RU-486 abortions but are doing injections, what we understand to be methotrexate.
Unfortunately, chemical abortions will continue at this abortion mill. Still, we rejoice in the significant victory over surgical abortions in Cleveland.  In Ohio, the majority of abortions (just over 91.5%) are surgical.  Additionally, in 2012, 0.25% of abortions by methotrexate were reported to the Ohio Department of Health.
While this is a small percent, it still amounts to 63 lives. We must continue to pray and work for these lives, while also recognizing the significant milestone of an end to surgical abortions at this facility.
Thank you for your prayers, financial help and involvement at Ohio’s abortion mills. None of this would be possible without you!

The mission of Ohio Right to Life is to promote and defend the right to life of all innocent human beings, from the time of fertilization until natural death.

“Life in the Womb (9 months in four minutes)”

By Dave Andrusko

unbornlifeinwombI always love to watch well-done stories of fetal development, even more so now that our daughter-in-law has had two babies.

NRL News Today has written about many YouTube videos, here’s one more: “Life in the Womb (9 months in four minutes)

So what makes this compelling viewing?

For some of the same reasons other well-done videos grab your attention: pace, music, and most of all the clear demonstration that fetal development is a natural progression, starting at fertilization and ending with the first cry. But there’s more.

For example, the video double backs. You see that the baby has fully developed outer ears and then a little bit later the viewer sees a schematic (as it were) of the middle and inner ear. Message? Complexity.

You see examples of the behavior expectant parents can now see on 4-D ultrasounds: the smiles, the yawning, the swallowing of amniotic fluid, the nibbling on the toes, the movement to gain maneuvering room as the child grows larger.

I’m sure I’ve probably seen this before, but this video does a very nice job of conveying the last part of the baby’s journey: moving down through the birth canal.

One other thought: pro-lifers all know that the umbilical cord is the baby’s lifeline, connecting mom and baby, so that the little one can receive nutrients and oxygen. But “Life in the Womb (9 months in four minutes)” helps us appreciate what an endless source of fascination it must be to the baby.

Cartoons, Cupcakes and Chalk: Six Pro-Life Ideas for Youth

By Micaiah Bilger, Education Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation Lifeline

October is Respect Life Month. What better time to get your youth group, Sunday school class, or children/grandchildren involved in speaking out for the right to life?

Here are six pro-life activities for young people this fall:

chalk2National Pro-Life Chalk Day on Thursday, October 2 – Grab a bucket of chalk, gather a group of friends, and head to a sidewalk near you. Use big letters and bold colors to write pro-life messages such as “Choose Life!” or “Heartbeat begins at just 21 days.” Go to http://nationalprolifechalkday.com/ for ideas and tips.

Wear your support for babies in the womb — Organize a group of people to wear pro-life themed T-shirt on a specific day or week, and encourage them to start conversations with their friends about why there’s always a reason to choose life.

Cupcake-150x150Pro-Life Cupcake Day on Thursday, October 9 – Bake and decorate a big batch of cupcakes, and share them with people at work or school. The idea is to start conversations with people about how every baby deserves a right to life – and a birthday!

Use your voice for life – Encourage students to enter our Pro-Life Oratory Contest. We have exciting changes this year. We’ve started a Novice Division for 9th and 10th grade students in addition to the Oratory Contest for 11th and 12th graders. And now, all students will be asked to record their speeches and submit the videos to us for judging. Students have the chance to win cash or a trip to New Orleans.

Use the power of the pen – Share our Pro-Life Essay Contest with junior and senior high school students. Winners will receive cash prizes, and the top two essays will be published in our state-wide newspaper, LifeLines.

Get to know Umbert the Unborn – Introduce younger children to the pro-life comic strip, Umbert the Unborn. Umbert is a preborn baby boy who goes on adventures in the womb. Visit creator Gary Cangemi’s website [www.umberttheunborn.com] to find games, coloring pages, and other activities.

Go Inside an Abortion Clinic on Radio Maria

August 25, 2014

Much of the news this summer concerned what can legally take place outside an abortion clinic: How close can sidewalk counselors stand to a clinic entrance, can they approach abortion-vulnerable women with literature, how far police can go to prevent pro-lifers from offering real choices to women.

But what happens inside an abortion clinic goes unnoticed every day, and every day, thousands of babies lose their lives.

On Radio Maria’s “Gospel of Life” Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, Janet Morana will take listeners inside one of these legal killing centers as she speaks to Catherine Adair, a former worker in the same Boston Planned Parenthood clinic that was at the center of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding clinic access.

Catherine was a young woman when she had an abortion. The experience was so traumatizing that she threw herself in the world of pro-choice feminism in order to justify what she had done. She went to work for Planned Parenthood, at the largest abortion clinic in New England. There she was part of every aspect of the abortion business, including counseling and medical assistance.

After witnessing the aftermath of a second-trimester abortion, she could no longer believe the lie that abortion was not killing. She is now a prolife activist and mother of five children.

Her testimony will convince anyone still on the fence that abortion has nothing to do with  health care, and is harmful to women and deadly for their children.

Also joining Janet will be Bryan Kemper, Priests for Life’s Youth Outreach Director. Bryan was in the courtroom last week when a decision that led to the closing of a late-term abortion clinic in Ohio was rendered.

Late-term abortionist Martin Haskell’s Lebanon Road Surgery Center in Sharonville, Ohio will no longer perform abortions after being unable to obtain a patient transfer agreement with a local hospital. Last week a judge upheld the enforcement of the state law.

An attorney for abortion clinic owner Martin Haskell has announced that Haskell will not appeal the judge’s decision and as of this week, abortions will no longer be performed in Sharonville. Unfortunately, women likely will be referred to another of Haskell’s clinics near Dayton.

“The man who made partial-birth abortion infamous is now down to one clinic,” said Bryan. “Priests for Life Youth Outreach has a presence at Haskell’s one remaining abortion mill in Kettering, Ohio, and will be ramping up our ministry there.  We have invited local priests and clergy to join us and will be there up to three times a week.”

For a list of Radio Maria stations or to tune in to “Gospel of Live” on the Internet, go to http://radiomaria.us. Tablet and smart phone users also can download a free Radio Maria app so they can listen to the show wherever they go.

The show will be rebroadcast at 2 a.m. ET Thursday and midnight ET on Sunday. All the shows are archived at priestsforlife.org/radiomaria.

We offer various options for you to receive different emails from the different branches of our ministry. See how you can vary your preferences or unsubscribe. Remember, we want to keep you in the loop!

LeBron James and the Palace Guards

RIGHT TO LIFE

of NORTHEAST OHIO

August 25,  2014

LeBron James and the Palace Guards

Dear Friend:

If you’ve ever watched LeBron James play basketball, you will see that he is “smartly” aggressive. He doesn’t taunt opposing players, nor does he make the game all about him.   He is a team player, aware of his surroundings and constantly adjusting his moves for the sake of winning the game, all with the guidance of a coach. Yes, he is capable of making big moves, but he does so only when the risk is worth the reward.

The sentries guarding the royal palaces in England (the Queen’s Guard) are capable of big things, too. Many people don’t realize that these sentries are fully operational soldiers. Their duty is to eliminate nuisance or any suggestions of threat from the public or their surrounding, yet what most people focus on is their ability to seemingly stand for hours seemingly unaffected by their environment, like a statue, with little to no movement or facial expression despite the circumstances.

Both LeBron James and the Queen’s Guard are highly trained, and are witnesses to myriads of events and activities which to most of us would cause us to react to threatening situations in an unfavorable manner. While they perform as witnesses to the jobs to which they are dedicated, they commandeer our respect and challenge us to emulate their behavior as we witness their commitment and purpose.

It can be like this for us as we witness the life threatening atrocities of abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide and more.    It is especially hard for those who witness outside of abortion facilities and Planned Parenthood. These locations are the LAST place at which we should have to take a stand to fight abortion.  We should be doing such a good job at educating our youth and the public about life that there would be no need for anyone to even consider having an abortion.  In all honesty, we rarely affect the lives of those entering the facilities on the days we are there. We never know, though, just how many people that drive by and see prayer and peaceful protest are positively affected by our dedication to saving lives.

Like LeBron and the Queen’s Guard, we should remain stolid in our faith and convictions, unaffected by any “roadblocks” thrown our way by facility guards or escorts. No matter what anyone says, it is not an easy thing for a woman to go into an abortion facility. They’ve rationalized a wall of defense to protect what they are doing.   If we react with self righteousness and bring ourselves down to the level of the taunting and unruly behavior we see in a lot in clinic escorts, then we are no better than they are and we risk not showing the love of God to an abortion minded client.

An abortion facility security guard once taunted me and told me to trespass by putting just one foot on their property so that he could call and get me arrested. He said I wasn’t dedicated unless I was arrested at least once for my cause. Had I done so, I wouldn’t be arrested for protecting life….I would be arrested because I was stupid!

As long as abortion remains legal, we will encourage witnesses to stand vigil at abortion facilities and Planned Parenthood so that we can work to change the hearts and minds of the clients, the employees, the occupants of the cars driving buy, our communities and our world because it is the right thing to do. We encourage you to do so in a spirit of love and compassion, rather than self-righteousness and anger. Abortion is legal, but that doesn’t make it right.  Neither is un-Christianlike behavior.  Don’t let the behavior of abortion advocates pull you into their vortex.

“God is love, and he who abides in love, abides in God, and God in him.” (1 John 4:16) You can read our vigil guidelines on our website by clicking here. In the meantime, our work goes on….

For Life,

Denise Leipold

Executive Director

IN THE NEWS…..

Martin Haskell Writes Editorial, ORTL Responds

The Cincinnati Inquirer printed an editorial opinion from abortionist Martin Haskell last week after Judge Metz upheld the decision to close the facility because of multiple violation issued by the Ohio Department of Health.  Haskell will not appeal the decision, and has stopped performing surgical abortions.  His editorial opinion paints the governor and Ohio law for his predicament, and that he is a provider of vital services to women who is being unfairly targeted.

You can read his article by clicking here.

Graciously, the Enquirer gave Ohio Right to Life 600 words to respond to Mr. Haskell’s editorial. The editorial was published online last Friday, and it ran in Saturday’s print edition.  ORTL Public Relations Manager Katie McCann wrote an excellent rebuttal to Haskell’s diatribe in which she states that Haskell is part if a fringe minority, and that  he believes abortion providers do not have to be held to the same high standards as actual health care providers.   You can read Katie McCann’s article by clicking here.   Good job, Katie!
