Ever since Terri Schiavo, writing about the wrongness of removing feeding tubes from patients diagnosed with persistent unconsciousness (PVS)–we should never call them “vegetables,” a term as denigrating and dehumanizing a racial epithet–is like spitting in the wind.

But, what the heck.

As mentioned above, such patients are often dehydrated to death by having their feeding tubes removed, which takes up to two weeks.

Never mind that some 40% of such diagnoses are erroneous.

Never mind that some of these people may feel the agony of not eating or drinking if so misdiagnosed. Bioethics and law treat artificial nutrition and hydration as a medical treatment, and any medical treatment can be refused or withdrawn.

But what if scientists found a way to awaken such patients? That may be on the way after an unconscious patients seems to have been roused through nerve stimulation. From the Guardian story:

A 35-year-old man who had been in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) for 15 years has shown signs of consciousness after receiving a pioneering therapy involving nerve stimulation. The treatment challenges a widely-accepted view that there is no prospect of a patient recovering consciousness if they have been in PVS for longer than 12 months. Since sustaining severe brain injuries in a car accident, the man had been completely unaware of the world around him.

But when fitted with an implant to stimulate the vagus nerve, which travels into the brain stem, the man appeared to flicker back into a state of consciousness. He started to track objects with his eyes, began to stay awake while being read a story and his eyes opened wide in surprise when the examiner suddenly moved her face close to the patient’s. He could even respond to some simple requests, such as turning his head when asked – although this took about a minute.

This should be good news that should cause us to pause in removing feeding tubes from the unconscious as this research proceeds. Some bioethicists even want such removals to become the standard of care, say after two years.

But I can hear the bioethicists now–because I have read their advocacy: It is more urgent to remove the feeding tubes from the minimally conscious because they may be in horror at their impaired condition or otherwise suffering.

And, in fact, people with minimal awareness are legally dehydrated in all fifty states.

Except–a study of patients in a locked-in state–the appearance of complete unconsciousness but actually aware–shows that most are “happy,” and majorities would not want euthanasia. (Scientists can now communicate with such patients.)

So, as this research proceeds, let’s care for these seriously disabled patients–both apparently unconscious and conscious–as full and equal members of the moral community, and think twice before removing sustaining treatment that can only have one result; a protracted and perhaps, painful death.

Editor’s note. Wesley’s great blog appears at National Review Online and is reposted with permission.

Passage of Bill to ProtectPain-Capable Unborn Children Urged By National Right to Life

Image result for free picture 22 week intrauterine growth

WASHINGTON – At a press conference led by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), National Right to Life, the federation of state right-to-life organizations and over 3,000 local chapters, urged members of Congress to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36). Rep. McCarthy announced that the U.S. House would soon take up consideration of the bill. “This legislation has saved lives at a state level and would save thousands of unborn babies annually from terribly painful deaths,” said Jennifer Popik, J.D., National Right to Life legislative director. “Now is the time to say that these babies need to be protected across the country.” Since 2010, National Right to Life and its state affiliates have led the effort to protect pain-capable unborn children, starting with enactment of model legislation in Nebraska. Sixteen states have enacted the National Right to Life model legislation, and the law is currently in effect in 15. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36) was developed from National Right to Life’s model. The legislation has previously passed the U.S. House of Representatives and has garnered a majority of votes in the U.S. Senate. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act continues to be one of the right-to-life movement’s top congressional priorities for the 115th Congress. Like the state bills, the proposed federal law would generally extend legal protect to unborn humans beginning at 20 weeks fetal age (22 weeks of pregnancy), based on congressional findings that by that point (and even earlier) the unborn child has the capacity to experience great pain during an abortion. National Right to Life President Carol Tobias said, “We are proud to stand with Leader McCarthy, Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), and so many other congressional pro-life heroes, in encouraging the U.S. House to protect pain-capable unborn children. One-fourth of premature infants now survive when born at this stage – and there is strong evidence that were a child to be aborted at that stage, they would experience great pain, as they are torn limb from limb in late abortions.” A 2015 paper by Tobias challenging “media myths” about the bill is available here.

In a nationwide poll of 1,623 registered voters in November 2014, The Quinnipiac University Poll found that 60% would support a law such as the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act prohibiting abortion after 20 weeks, while only 33% opposed such legislation. Women voters split 59-35% in support of such a law, while independent voters supported it by 56-36%. A two-page summary of key points about the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act is available here. Some of the extensive evidence that unborn children have the capacity to experience pain, at least by 20 weeks fetal age, is available on the National Right to Life website at www.nrlc.org/abortion/fetalpain and also here: www.doctorsonfetalpain.com.
For social media purposes, this release is posted at: http://www.nrlc.org/communications/releases/2017/release092617/ Founded in 1968, National Right to Life, the federation of 50 state right-to-life affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, is the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots pro-life organization. Recognized as the flagship of the pro-life movement, NRLC works through legislation and education to protect innocent human life from abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide and euthanasia.

5 Lessons for Pro-Lifers from Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa delivering Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech

Mother Teresa delivering Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech

This week marks the twentieth anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, or, as she is now known to Catholics, St Teresa of Calcutta. (As with her actual death, the anniversary seems to have been rather overshadowed by that of Princess Diana!)

Mother Teresa is best known for her work among the poorest of the poor, caring for “all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society” in the slums of Calcutta. By her death in 1997 the order she founded, the Missionaries of Charity, had grown from a 13-member Calcutta congregation to more than 4,000 sisters who managed orphanages, AIDS hospices and charity centres worldwide, caring for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine.

However, she was also praised (and fiercely criticised) for her staunch opposition to abortion. She spoke up for the unborn on the biggest stages imaginable, including when she accepted her Nobel Peace Prize. She didn’t let famous people off the hook either, keeping up correspondence over many years with Hillary Clinton to try and change her mind on abortion.

So, on this twentieth anniversary of her death, what lessons does Mother Teresa have for pro-lifers today?

1) Dare to speak out

Speaking out about abortion can be hard. It is such a controversial topic, and people’s reactions can be so extreme, that we can all feel the temptation to be quiet about our beliefs, or perhaps stick to more socially acceptable causes. Mother Teresa’s main work was with the poor and hungry, and I’m sure it would have been easier for her to stick to that work and enjoy the praise she received for it. But she didn’t. She used the platform her fame had won her to speak out for the most marginalised, the unborn. When accepting her Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, she said:

“And I feel one thing I want to share with you all, the greatest destroyer of peace today is the cry of the innocent unborn child. For if a mother can murder her own child in her womb, what is left for you and for me to kill each other?”

She reiterated the sentiment at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C, on February 5, 1994, where guests included the then President Bill Clinton, and his wife Hillary.

“But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself.”

Here, she stood in front of the most powerful people in America, if not the world, and dared to call out abortion for what is it – the killing of a child.

2) Reach out in love

However, Mother Teresa also reminds us that we must spread this truth with love. This quote is also taken from the prayer breakfast address:

“How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts.”

While I’ve yet to encounter the pro-lifer of common stereotypes, who shouts “murderer!” at women seeking abortion, we can never be reminded too often that the only way to reach out to an abortion-minded woman is with love, and by offering support.

3) Recognise the real difficulties

This also means recognising the very real situations that people find themselves in. Mother Teresa knew that keeping a baby often isn’t easy – love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Working with people in the most unimaginable circumstances, she knew better than anyone how difficult it can be, and that a baby changes the parents’ lives beyond recognition. “So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts.”

4) Do your part

This recognition requires those of us fighting for the cause to give of ourselves. Mother Teresa told the assembled VIPs in Washington what she and her sisters did to put her pro-life rhetoric into action. “We are fighting abortion by adoption — by care of the mother and adoption for her baby. We have saved thousands of lives. We have sent word to the clinics, to the hospitals and police stations: ‘Please don’t destroy the child; we will take the child.’ So we always have someone tell the mothers in trouble: ‘Come, we will take care of you, we will get a home for your child.’”

We may not be able to personally care for mothers and babies to this extent, but we should all be willing to translate our beliefs into real action – we too must give until it hurts. This could be by volunteering, or by making it known to those around you that you would help them in any difficulty, or by lobbying your MP, or simply by speaking up for your beliefs. To use another famous quote from Mother Teresa, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

5) The greatest destroyer of peace

Perhaps the greatest lesson Mother Teresa can give us is an understanding of just what it is we are fighting. Abortion doesn’t just kill babies and damage mothers, it affects the whole of society. It isn’t just those women and those babies that are affected, but all of us. Abortion certainly affects the fathers: “…that father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. The father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion.” It also affects the entire country where abortion is permitted: “Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”

There are many other causes worth fighting for, but we must never let ourselves be convinced that the pro-life fight is a side-issue, or one that affects only a small number of people. It’s not just that we care about babies, and also their mothers – we care about everyone. A final quote from the Washington address:

“Many people are very, very concerned with the children of India, with the children of Africa where quite a few die of hunger, and so on. Many people are also concerned about all the violence in this great country of the United States. These concerns are very good. But often these same people are not concerned with the millions who are being killed by the deliberate decision of their own mothers. And this is what is the greatest destroyer of peace today — abortion which brings people to such blindness.”

“Reclaiming Hearts for Christ: Exposing the Lie of Pornography”

Friends for Life:

First, today is the last day to register for the 2017 Diocesan Pastoral Conference “Reclaiming Hearts for Christ: Exposing the Lie of Pornography” at Camden Falls Reception Center in Tiffin on September 7th. Register right now at: www.toledoconference.org! You will not be disappointed with internationally acclaimed speaker Matt Fradd, Bishop Daniel Thomas, and three great witness presentations! Hope to see you there, but be sure to register!!!

Secondly, Toledo City Council’s meeting last night on “Impeding Access to Health Care” was pretty crazy. I was there for a total of 5 hours as after the official testimony of each side nearly 70 people rose to speak from the public. Praise God the majority of those individuals were pro-life! The most striking thing of the evening for me was that the manager of facility at Capital Care called the majority of people who come to “protest” at the clinic, “terrorists”. Striking because for the rest of the evening as grandmas and women as young as 12 came forward to share their pro-life counseling work, they hardly came off as terrorists. I’ve provided some more reflection in the document attached, “Reflections on Toledo City Council Meeting” if you are interested. No vote date was set on the ordinance but please continue to email city council members and express the truth in LOVE, MERCY AND COMPASSION! (http://toledo.oh.gov/government/city-council/)

Thirdly, if you haven’t yet, please join our cause to be a part of the 40 Days for Life here in Toledo. It’s through this loving witness that we can show Toledo City Council and all of Northwest Ohio that the pro-life community is a LOVING community committed to prayer and steadfastly witnessing to the dignity of human life including the unborn child. Visit www.40daysforlife.com/toledo today to sign up to take an hour of prayer at the abortion facility!

Finally, the Culture Project will be returning to the Diocese of Toledo October 14 for the Bishop’s “Mass for Life” and will be staying through May. Their calendar is filling up fast so go to www.restoreculture.com today to invite the missionaries to your school, church or home-schooling group!

God bless everyone, keep up the good fight!

Is My Name Remembered?

August 30, 2017
Dear Friend:

I hate to admit that as I get older, it gets harder to remember the names of people that I don’t see very often.  I often have to rely on subtle clues in the conversation when I run into someone that knows me, and when I should know their name but can’t remember it.  This really bothers me a lot!   However, what’s worse than that is the more than 59 million unborn children who were aborted and killed since 1973 when the Supreme Court tragically legalized abortion and ignored our constitution.
Those 59 million unborn children never had a name to forget.

On September 9, in hundreds of locations across the United States, let’s help to honor those lives by giving them a name:  Child of God.   Please, help us to give them the love and dignity that abortion denied them by joining with us next week at the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children.

HELP STOP THE DANGEROUS ABORTION PILL!
Our colleagues at Greater Columbus Right to Life have undertaken an exhaustive review of the preliminary data available since a label change modified Ohio’s prescribing parameters for the abortion pill, and has found that the incidence of serious complications related to RU-486 (mifeprex) has skyrocketed since April of 2016, supporting the claim that the FDA’s decision prioritized the powerful abortion lobby over women’s health and safety.
David Burkons, who runs the Northeast Ohio Women’s Center abortion facility in Cuyahoga Falls and the Toledo Women’s Center (Capital Care Network) in Toledo, and who has recently had his license suspended for drug violations, has a record in one year of having the most botched abortions in Ohio using the dangerous abortion pill.  Burkons is also the medical director at Preterm abortion clinic in Cleveland, where 22 year old Lakisha Wilson died after having an allegedly illegal late term abortion.

World Headed For Collapse Without More Children

Billionaire Musk’s surprising tweet: World headed toward collapse without more children

Lisa Bourne Lisa Bourne Follow Lisa

LOS ANGELES, California, July 31, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) – When billionaire Elon Musk tweeted about population growth earlier this month, some of his more than 10 million Twitter followers assumed he was lamenting “overpopulation.”

The Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder has funded research in Mars colonization and artificial intelligence, and he is regarded as an enlightened and enterprising entrepreneur.

So given that and the fact his tweet contained the words “population” and “collapse,” it was not a stretch to suppose he’d be tweeting about the planet having too many people.

However, Musk’s message was that some of the world’s countries are not replacing themselves in population and they are in danger of demographic collapse.

In saying so, he inadvertently communicated to his sizable audience what the pro-life movement has said for years: The problem is NOT that we’re having too many kids.

“The world’s population is accelerating towards collapse, but few seem to notice or care,” Musk’s tweet said.

He was commenting on a November 2016 New Scientist article titled “The world in 2076: The population bomb has imploded.” The article projected a measured decline of global population over the next 60 years, because half of the countries in the world have fertility rates below the replacement rate.

Replacement fertility is around 2.1 children per woman. Most developed countries are not achieving this. Population Research Institute confirms that half the world’s population has below-replacement fertility.

Musk’s tweet in its intended context was then covered by a number of media outlets, albeit with the awkward task of how to package the narrative atypical of current accepted anti-population ideology.

But Musk has made similar comments before.

“We should be concerned about demographic implosion,” he told CNNMoney in a March interview.

“So if you look at countries like Japan, most of Europe, China,” Musk said, “and you look at the birth rates, in a lot of those places it is only at about half of the sustaining rate.”

Musk went on to describe an inverted demographic pyramid for CNN’s correspondent, where more people in older age groups are on top and how this is not sustainable.

“So it will sort of fall over,” he said, “it will not stand.”

“What we’ll actually have in those countries is a very high dependency ratio, where the number of people who are retired is very high relative to the number of who are net producers,” he said. “And so the social safety net will not hold.”

Musk’s analysis focused on the productivity of people in their respective demographics — not a measure of the value of life — but it does factor concretely into civic planning. Societies need future generations to logistically sustain themselves. Musk mentioned as well how immigration is not a feasible method of population replacement.

Musk may be an unlikely dispatcher of a pro-life message.

Indeed, in the CNN interview, he spoke of how we “sort of evolved to just procreate and there wasn’t birth control or anything,” as though this worldview is something from the past.

And he spoke of China’s one-child policy only in terms of its role in rendering the nation to its current state of non-replacement, with no mention of the horrible forced abortion element.

But his grasp of the economics and sizable platform enabled him to deliver the message that having too many kids is not the issue, and population control is not working.

“The full gravity of this is not well understood,” Musk said, “but will become a severe issue in the next few decades.”

His words ring true. Studies from demographers in recent years have repeatedly shown what pro-life advocates have warned about for years: An impending demographic winter in the west and other countries, arrived at through low fertility rates and abortion, is a very real threat.

Training for Pregnancy Help Centers

Ohio Right to Life

Friend —

In recent years, pro-abortion politicians in a number of states have targeted life-affirming pregnancy centers with harmful laws that violate their First Amendment rights. As alarming as this is, in Ohio, we’ve been blessed with quite a different story.

Here in Ohio, our legislature is overwhelmingly pro-life—so pro-life, in fact, that in the last 7 years, Ohio Right to Life has seen 19 pro-life initiatives signed into law! Relevant to the work of pregnancy help centers, this summer, Governor John Kasich approved $1 million for Ohio Right to Life’s Parenting and Pregnancy Support Program, an initiative we formed in 2013 to provide state funds to life-affirming pregnancy centers.

Ohio pregnancy centers now have the opportunity to apply for this funding – the only question is, “How?”

In collaboration with our friends at Heartbeat International, Ohio Right to Life will answer that question on Friday, September 8 at our Funds for Life Training Session, a training dedicated to explaining how to apply for funding through the Ohio Parenting and Pregnancy Support Program. Here are the details:

2017_Pregnancy_Help_Center_Training_-_Full_flyer.jpg

In years past, there has been a lot of confusion about the application process. The truth is, the application process is rather rigorous and requires careful planning and writing to guarantee consideration. But as intimidating as that may sound, there are plenty of fantastic resources right here in Ohio that can help you as you set out to apply for these funds.

The goal of our training is to connect you to these resources, answer your questions, and set you up for success in your efforts to secure funding for your life-saving efforts!

If you are interested in attending this event, kindly RSVP to me, Jessica Koehler, at 614.547.0099 ext. 303 by Wednesday, September 6.

In Ohio, we are so grateful to have a legislature and governor who care about supporting alternatives to abortion. Ohio Right to Life is eager to help your center apply for these funds and take advantage of this opportunity to grow, change hearts, and save lives.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about our upcoming training or the Parenting and Pregnancy Support Program generally.

With you for Life,

A Two Second Video Can Be Worth Thousands of…

August 4, 2017   Abortion

A two-second video can be worth thousands of hits and retweets

 By Dave Andrusko

Well, if a picture is worth a thousand words, a two-second video can be worth thousands of hits and tweets and re-tweets..

I don’t know who first saw this and spread the word, but if you go to Hand Speak you will see an illustration of how you sign “abortion” in American Sign Language.

If you look up ASL, it’s defined as “the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and is one of several communication options used by people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.” So it’s a big deal.

In just two seconds the signer goes from a rocking motion, like a lullaby, to using her right hand to take out would be what would be the baby, and discard him/her in one quick motion by opening her fist.

If you look at other options–at signingsavvy.com, for example—you see much the same sign. In the latter case the rocking gesture is lengthier and taking out what would be the baby is more obvious.

You can go in a lot of different directions with this. But what struck me was if you look to the left, literally the first word on the ASL dictionary is “abandon.”

The signs for abandon and abortion are different, of course, but the message of the two gestures is very similar: get out of here. I’m perhaps reading more into this than it deserves, but in both instances, the woman’s face seemed pinched and unhappy to me.

Take a moment out and go to Hand Speak.

Supreme Court Asked to End Censorship of Planned Parenthood Videos

Pro-life investigators ask Supreme Court to end censorship of Planned Parenthood videos

By Lisa Bourne

David Daleiden

David Daleiden

David Daleiden and the Center for Medical Progress have appealed to the Supreme Court to lift a federal judge’s gag order barring release of undercover footage of Planned Parenthood leaders at an abortion tradeshow.

The petition argues that no federal court has ever upheld a prior restraint like Judge William Orrick’s order to suppress speech of overwhelming public interest.

“At issue in this appeal is a gag order,” it states, “a preliminary injunction imposed specifically for the purpose of hiding information from the public, precisely because the information is of such significant public interest and concern — the procurement and sale of aborted fetal body parts.”

The footage that Orrick banned last year was taken at the National Abortion Federation’s (NAF) 2014 and 2015 conferences. It exposed high level abortionists speaking frankly about abortion and exposing gruesome details about the industry.

Daleiden, the CMP project lead, says there is information being suppressed by the order that is of significant public interest and concern.

“Judge Orrick’s gag order, issued at the behest of Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation, is an unprecedented attack on the First Amendment by a clearly biased federal judge,” Daleiden said in a statement. “Judge Orrick even wants to press his gag order in the California Attorney General’s bogus criminal case against me — though he, NAF, and Planned Parenthood insist the gag order only applies to my defense, and not to the Attorney General’s bogus prosecution.”

The suppressed NAF footage is part of some three years of undercover video captured by CMP documenting the abortion industry and its questionable handling of the remains of children aborted at its facilities.

The videos have led to a Congressional investigation and heightened calls to end the multi-millions awarded to Planned Parenthood annually in taxpayer subsidies. Numerous executives from the abortion giant were documented in the videos bartering in the trafficking of body parts from aborted children.

Orrick had blocked release of those videos last year, after NAF took Daleiden to court over the footage. Another party had previously posted some of the video online.

Publicly accessible links to some of the footage were posted on a website belonging to Daleiden’s criminal attorneys in May.

The attorneys have argued that release of the footage is necessary to provide Daleiden with proper defense in his criminal case. Orrick rejected this argument when he found Steve Cooley and Brent Ferreira in violation of his court order last month. Daleiden faces both civil and criminal charges.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra had charged Daleiden and his associate, Sandra Merritt, with 15 felony counts of recording confidential conversations without consent from all parties.

San Francisco Superior Court Judge Christopher Hite dismissed the first charges in the criminal case for being “legally insufficient.” Becerra later amended and refiled the charges, subsequently adding in the file names of specific videos.

Orrick later followed up on Cooley and Ferreira’s contempt charges last month, finding Daleiden and CMP in contempt as well, awarding the NAF around $137,000 for attorney fees, security costs, and staff time the abortion group contends it has expended searching the Internet for links to Daleiden’s videos.

Daleiden was also ordered to turn over videos and any materials relating to the court order.

CMP had petitioned for Orrick to recuse himself from the case in June, due to Orrick’s previous involvement with a San Francisco resource center that partners with Planned Parenthood, but the request was initially denied.

“As a key leader of the “Good Samaritan Family Resource Center” in San Francisco, Judge Orrick helped open and fund a Planned Parenthood Northern California clinic inside the Center’s headquarters,” CMP said Thursday in a statement. “Planned Parenthood Northern California has membership in the National Abortion Federation and is a named plaintiff against CMP and Daleiden in Judge Orrick’s courtroom. A motion to disqualify Judge Orrick is still pending.”

Daleiden’s attorneys and pro-life advocates have repeatedly contended that charges against him and Merritt are politically motivated and driven by the abortion lobby and its supporters.

Daleiden still has a significant amount of video that has not yet been released.

Every day, more than 3,000 children are killed through abortion and their bodies discarded as medical waste.   It’s time to honor their lives and give them the dignity that the tragedy of abortion denied them.
Join Right to Life of Northeast Ohio as we sponsor an interfaith memorial service on the fifth annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children, calling on pro-life Americans to honor the grave sites and memorials of our aborted brothers and sisters.
Please, can you spare just one hour and join is in a memorial service at 1PM to be held near the Memorial to the Unborn at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron?

With the accompaniment of the Knights of Columbus Color Guard, memorial service participants to date include Pastor Al Davis (Bible Baptist Church, Richfield), Chris Long (President, Ohio Christian Alliance), Senator Frank Larose (Ohio Senate District 27), Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor, Helena Carlson (President, University of Akron Students for Life) and keynote speaker Robin Swoboda.
