CINCINNATI, Ohio – Recently, Ohio Right to Life discovered that the University of Cincinnati is advertising Planned Parenthood’s abortion services on their Women’s Center webpage. Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio recently lost its transfer agreement with the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in light of a new legislative initiative which bans ambulatory surgical facilities from having a transfer agreement with taxpayer funded hospitals. Today, Mike Gonidakis, President of Ohio Right to Life, sent a letter to the university President, Santa J. Ono, respectfully requesting that the university remove the abortion language from its website.

“Ohio’s pro-life taxpayers are troubled that a taxpayer-funded institution is advertising abortion on its website,” said Katherine McCann, Public Relations Manager at Ohio Right to Life. “Ohio Right to Life’s mission is to protect and promote life. A massive part of that endeavor occurs by ensuring that our conscience rights are protected so that we can advocate effectively.”

Last spring, Ohio Right to Life wrote to the President of the University of Toledo, requesting that his taxpayer-funded institution refrain from having a transfer agreement with the abortion clinic, Capital Care Network.

“We’re not asking these institutions to agree with us,” said McCann. “We’re simply asking that they appreciate that taxpayers and alumni alike have a wide range of beliefs on abortion, and that the pro-life among them would appreciate if the university did not take sides in the debate.”

Death Panels: Massachusetts Hospital Imposing DNR Orders on Patients Without Consent

Death Panels: Massachusetts Hospital Imposing DNR Orders on Patients Without Consent

State

Can this have something to do with Romney/Obamacare?

According to a medical study, since 2006, Massachusetts General Hospital’s Bioethics Committee has forced people to not receive wanted resuscitation by imposing unilateral DNRs. And apparently, it’s all done in Star Chamber secrecy. From Thaddeus Pope’s blog (quoting from a medical symposium presentation):

Unilateral Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) orders are a specific type of medical futility decision in which clinicians withhold advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the event of cardiopulmonary arrest despite objections of patients or their surrogates. There is little information on how often and to whom unilateral DNR orders are applied.

patient9The ethics committee at Massachusetts General Hospital has had a unilateral DNR policy since 2006. We investigated the incidence, sociodemographic and clinical predictors, and outcomes of patients with unilateral DNR orders.

If I read this correctly, thirty-eight percent of those upon whom the unilateral DNRs appear not to have been at the end stage of a terminal disease:

Patients for whom unilateral DNR was recommended were more likely to have conditions judged to be endstage rather than potentially reversible (62% versus 41%, p=0.05).

And who can be surprised that non whites were more likely to have an involuntary DNR imposed?

This is medical tyranny. People are refused potentially life-saving treatment based on the secret views of strangers in committee who have given themselves the power to so dictate.

Litigate!

Identical Twin Girls with Rare Condition Born Holding Hands

Identical Twin Girls with rare condition born holding hands

By Dave Andrusko

Thistlewaites2re

Identical twins Jillian and Jenna Thistlethwaite were born last Friday in Akron General Medical Center, a rare enough occasion.

But they shared one amniotic sac and one placenta—a condition known as monoamniotic (or “mono mono”)–a rare condition that takes place about one of every 10,000 pregnancies. And because there are potential life-threatening challenges—the girls’ umbilical cords could have become entangled–mom Sarah Thistlethwaite spent 56 days on bed rest.

And then to top it off, when doctors lifted Jillian and Jenna up for their parents to see after delivery, they were grasping each other’s hands!

Thistlewaites1re

Fortunately the girls were breathing on their own which allowed their parents to hold them on Mother’s Day.

Mrs. Thistlethwaite told the Akron Beacon Journal that this was “the best Mother’s Day present ever.” A middle school math teacher, she added, “They’re already best friends.”

She described their birth as “definitely, truly a miracle.”

The girls were born at 33 weeks and two days. Jenna, at 4 pounds, 2 ounces and 17 inches, came first. Forty-eight seconds later Jillian arrived, weighting in at 3 pounds, 13 ounces and 17.5 inches in length.

Actually, there is one final rarity. Another mother is on bed rest at Akron General Medical Center. She is also carrying mono mono twin girls.

It’s all in the spelling…..

 M

is for the miracle of life. It is the ultimate gift that only a woman can carry in her womb to nurture and develop until birth. It is never a mistake or an accident. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” Psalm 127:3

O

is for the ordinary yet outstanding obedience to the laws of God and the laws of nature in recognizing the awesome responsibility that a woman is given to continue the human race through her own reproductive power.   It is the opening of her heart to accept the miracle no matter the circumstance. It is the outpouring of compassion we give to mothers who give the gift of life to an adoptive family.

 T

is for the time, talents and treasures that mothers give to their children over their lifetime. It is for teaching their children Christian morals, values, self-respect and more so that they can make decisions in life which reflect what they have learned, and pass this on to their own children. “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

 H

is for the happiness and the heartache that mothers experience as their children grow. It is for the hope that a pregnant woman feels for the future even though she may be scared and confused. It is for the help that is available so that those who ARE experiencing a crisis may know that they are not alone. No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthian 10:13

E

is for the eternal optimism that mothers have for their children even in the face of sometimes overwhelming odds. It is for the eager faces of their children, and even the evil that a mother must overcome to raise her child right. It is for the encouragement that is given to all of us through the word of God. “But Jesus said: Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”  Matthew 19:14

is for rights and responsibility. A woman has a right to what she can do with her own body, but a responsibility to nurture the life of a new human being that may be created in her womb. When a woman becomes a mother, it doesn’t matter if that life is born or not….it is REAL.   “Judgment will begin at the house of God” 1Peter 4:17…..not at the Supreme Court.

To all mothers: whether you gave birth to and raised a child, or whether you adopted or fostered a child…no matter what the situation….Happy Mother’s Day.   If you are a mother that has not yet given birth and believe abortion is OK, we pray for you this Mother’s Day and always so that you may come to realize the tremendous honor that God has bestowed upon you with the gift of life.

And finally, to my own mom….I love you!  Happy Mother’s Day!

Our work goes on…

Moms in the Movement are Doubly Blessed!

National Right To Life

http://www.nrlc.org

Moms in the Movement are Doubly Blessed!

Every Mother deserves our love and thanks this Mother’s Day.  The loving devotion you give to children to give them the best lives you can is an inspiration to all of us!

Mothers who volunteer in the pro-life movement have, in a way, two sets of children they enable to have wonderful lives: their own children, for whom they sacrifice so much to raise and nurture; and the children who have life today because of the sacrificial work they do for the pro-life cause.

With statistics showing the pro-life movement has saved well over 9 million lives since Roe v. Wade, many pro-life volunteers might be responsible for one, two, or many more precious individual lives saved because of their work.  And while they might never meet those children or know who they are, they are heroes because of the sacrifices they made to help another mom choose life for her child.

Imagine, for every one of those children saved, a lifetime now to enjoy, a lifetime that might not have been.

And for each mom who chose life for her child, a lifetime to cherish that gift forever!

So for all moms who make the world the wonderful place it is, thank you – our prayers and thanks are with you this weekend and always!

And for those moms who go above and beyond to help ensure that not only their own precious children, but many precious others, too, can experience the joy of life, our deepest thanks. You are life-savers!

Sincerely,
Carol Tobias
National Right to Life President

Legal Experts Predict that Priests for Life Lawsuit to Protect Your Right to Freedom of Religion will be Decided at the Supreme Court!

Legal Experts Predict that
Priests for Life Lawsuit to Protect Your
Right to Freedom of Religion will be
Decided at the Supreme Court!

May 9, 2014

Yesterday Priests for Life spoke for you before the second-highest court in the nation, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

We also represented you in a rally that Priests for Life put together outside the courthouse.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz spoke at the rally.  Others who took part were:

• U.S. Representatives Trent Franks of Arizona, Tim Huelskamp of Kansas, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Scott Garrett of New Jersey, Chris Smith of New Jersey, and Diane Black of Tennessee
• Josh Duggar, Executive Director, FRC Action
• Gary Bauer, President, American Values
• Lila Rose, President of Live Action
• Carol Tobias, President of the National Right to Life Committee
• Jeanne Monahan, President of the March for Life
• Charmaine Yoest, President and CEO, Americans United for Life
• Tim Goeglein VP for External Relations for Focus on the Family
• Day Gardner, President of National Black Pro-Life Union
• Jimmy Nolan, President of Crossroads
• Paul Rondeau, Executive Director of American Life League
• Sam Casey, Managing Director and General Counsel of the Law of Life Project
• Sarah Torre of the Heritage Foundation
• Tina Whittington, Assistant Director, Students for Life of America
• Rev. Rob Schenk, President of Faith and Action in the Nation’s Capitol
• Rev. Patrick Mahoney, President of Christian Defense Coalition

That list of individuals shows you just how important our lawsuit is because it is the first case of the religious non-profit organizations to reach the appellate level on the merits of the arguments.

Robert Muise, Senior Counsel for the American Freedom Law Center and the lead attorney arguing our case in court, correctly points out:

“This case with Priests for Life is the lead case for the non-profit religious organizations challenging the mandate similar to how Hobby Lobby is the lead case for the for-profit companies challenging the HHS mandate.”

In case you missed it, here are a couple links you can click on to watch news coverage of both our Rally for Religious Freedom and analysis of our lawsuit:

From Christian Broadcasting Network: http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2014/May/Priests-HHS-Law-Violates-Our-Reason-for-Existence/

And the Washington Times carried my op-ed yesterday both online and in print: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/may/7/pavone-a-small-act-with-a-huge-impact/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS

As you will see and hear, the abortion mandate of the tyrannical HHS mandate violates Priests for Life’s very reason for existing!

And yours, too!  And every Americans!

That’s why we’re in court.

We’re fighting for you, for ourselves, for the pro-life movement and for every American’s First Amendment right to FREEDOM OF RELIGION.

That’s why I beg you to …

Please CLICK HERE and support Priests for Life’s lawsuit!

Remember, although three of us from Priests for Life are specifically named as plaintiffs in our lawsuit – myself, Janet Morana our Executive Director, and Dr. Alveda King, PFL Director for African-American Outreach – in a very real sense …

YOU ARE A PLAINTIFF, too!

That’s because the HHS mandate is nothing less than an attempt to take away YOUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT to fight for an end to the injustice of abortion!

As I just told you, our lawsuit is to religious ministries what the Hobby Lobby case is to private businesses.

What makes it so important is the fact that its outcome will set a legal precedent for generations to come!

If we lose, our case will become a legal sledge hammer that the federal government and the abortion industry will use in an effort to bludgeon the People of Life into submission.

So don’t sit back and allow the federal government to:

a) Dictate how and when and where you can practice your religion.

b) Tell you what constitutes practicing religion and what doesn’t.

c) Force you to take part in immoral actions that violate your conscience.  And …

d) Establish federal regulations that both restrict your right to freedom of speech and compel you to say things you do not believe.

Fight back!

And the best way to do so right now is to:

CLICK HERE and make a contribution to Priests for Life’s Legal Fund so that we can sustain our lawsuit and, through it, protect your First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

We simply cannot fight the might and power of the federal government alone.

No single one of us can.

We’ve got to stand together in this.

So please CLICK HERE and help today.

The size of your gift is not nearly as important as is the fact that you give what you can, and that you do so right now.  Before you delete my email and move on to your next one.

If you can make a contribution of $1,500 to help protect your religious liberty, then do so.

If all you can do today is send $25 or $15, then do that.

Your dollars are desperately needed because, win or lose in the D.C. Court of Appeals …

Priests for Life’s lawsuit is going to the Supreme Court!

If the Appeals Court rules in our favor, the government will likely appeal to the Supreme Court.

And if the Appeals Court rules in favor of the government – as most legal analysts predict will happen given the judges who were “randomly selected” to sit on the 3-judge panel that heard our case yesterday – Priests for Life will definitely appeal to the Supreme Court.

Which is why it is so important that our Legal Fund be replenished at every opportunity.

So please CLICK HERE and make a contribution that will allow Priests for Life to fight for YOUR RIGHT to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Don’t delay.

It’s all hands on deck right now as continue to fight the government’s attempt to compel you and all Americans to take a direct role in the grave evil of abortion.

Thank you for whatever help you can give today.

And please PRAY for the judges who will rule on our appeal.  Ask the Holy Spirit to inspire them to rule justly and without political bias.

Thank you again and may God bless you.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director, Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries

Remember:

We’re all in this together!

Pope Emeritus Benedict rightly calls religious liberty the “most cherished of America’s freedoms.”

For the sake of our unborn brothers and sisters, yourself, the pro-life movement, our fellow Americans and all who are to come after us …

We must protect and defend our First Amendment right to FREEDOM OF RELIGION!

CLICK HERE so that Priests for Life can continue to fight for you.

Thank you for your prayers and your financial gift.  And know that in heartfelt appreciation for all that you do for the youngest members of our human family, I remember you at every Mass I offer; as do all the priests of Priests for Life.  May God bless you.

Decades After Birth, Fetal Cells Remain in Mother’s Body Aiding to Repair Injuries

NRL News Today

Decades after birth, fetal cells remain in mother’s body aiding to repair injuries

 By Dave Andrusko

Editor’s note. We ran this a couple of months ago, but it seems wonderfully appropriate to re-run just ahead of Mother’s Day.

unborn_baby68Although widely known in the scientific community, it’s news to most laypeople that years—even decades—after a mother delivers her baby, some of the fetal cells will remain in her body. These fetal cells, which are some of the developing baby’s cells, while not necessarily stem cells, are adaptable in their ability to grow and repair tissues.

Liz Szabo writing in USA Today, adds additional breadth and depth to our understanding of the ability of these fetal cells to “come to a mother’s rescue” in a story whose sub-headline reads, “New study in mice shows that fetal cells carried by moms after they give birth may actually provide stem cells to help the body repair some damage.”

Szabo’s lead is extremely clever:

“Many moms carry photos of their children in their wallets.

“Yet mothers may be surprised to learn that they’re also carrying some of their children’s cells, years or even decades after the end of a pregnancy. And while a baby photo can melt a mother’s heart, the cells her child leaves behind in her blood may actually heal it, emerging research suggests.”

Or, as she puts it later,

“[T]he fetal cells left behind in women’s bodies are more than mementos.”

The story begins with a discussion of a paper delivered last week at the American Heart Association’s International Stroke Conference in San Diego, by Louise McCullough, director of stroke research at the University of Connecticut Health Center. The story can be read in its entirety so let me offer a few highlights.

The crux of Szabo’s story is that the fetal cells that remain in the mother mouse’s body appear to act like stem cells when they race to repair damage caused by a stroke in the mother’s body. This raises intriguing (but as yet still unclear) possibilities.

McCullough studied how fetal cells operated in the mother mouse who had suffered a stroke. Within three days they clustered around the area of the stroke. Szabo writes,

“But these fetal cells were more than bystanders, McCullough says. They also began dividing and giving rise to the types of cells that line blood vessel walls, as if trying to form new blood vessels to restore blood flow to the injured brain.

“What scientists don’t yet know, is whether the fetal cells were clustered around the stroke site by coincidence, or if they really were acting like stem cells attempting to regenerate tissue. McCullough presented her research in abstract form. She has not yet published the full paper in a peer-reviewed journal.”

Other scientists, working independently, have seen similar behavior in mice with heart failure. Szabo writes

“The mice who recovered best were ones in which fetal cells integrated into their heart tissue, says [V.K.] Gadi, who wasn’t involved in McCullough’s research. In a study in humans, researchers found maternal cells at work in a diabetic child, apparently trying to repair insulin-producing cells, he says.

Naturally, others are examining what role fetal cells may play in diseases such as cancer.

Szabo raises another fascinating possibility: that, like stem cells, “Fetal cells appear able to change into whatever specific type of cell is needed, McCullough says. So fetal cells in a mother with liver damage could transform into liver cells.”

Amazing stuff. Go here to read Szabo’s full story; and to “The Amazing Interplay between Mother and Unborn Child

Mr. Obama, Tear Down this Mandate!

National Right to Life

http://www.nrlc.org

Mr. Obama, tear down this mandate!

National Right to Life is challenging President Obama to respect Americans’ sacred, historical right to observe our most deeply held moral and political beliefs.  NRLC President Carol Tobias spoke at a rally outside the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., today after oral hearings in the case of Priests for Life v. Sebelius.

“At issue here today,” Mrs. Tobias said, “is whether religious institutions and organizations can be forced to provide health coverage for drugs and procedures in opposition to their religious and moral beliefs. . . The law allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services to mandate that most health plans cover any service that the Secretary places on a list of ‘preventive’ services.  There is nothing in the law to prevent the Secretary from placing abortion, assisted suicide, or any other additional services on this list.”

Mrs. Tobias continued:  “In an attempt to protect and promote abortion, Obamacare prohibits [health insurance] exchanges from telling prospective enrollees in advance about the ‘abortion surcharge’ which is the defined monthly charge for abortion coverage. This abortion surcharge is not optional – every enrollee in an abortion-covering exchange plan must pay it, including families that have moral objections to abortion. Moreover, many enrollees are having great difficulty even finding out whether these exchange plans cover elective abortion and so may be unknowingly signing up for an abortion-covering plan.

“Mr. President, why are you forcing millions of Americans who have a moral, conscientious objection to abortion to use their hard-earned dollars to pay for killing innocent unborn children?” Tobias asked.

Of course, we know the reason Obama is forcing Americans to pay for the killing of innocent children:  He is an ideologue on the issue, the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history.  His signature health care law is also his signature affront to unborn babies and their mothers, resulting in more dead, more wounded, more needless tragedies that could be avoided.

Mrs. Tobias concluded by calling on President Obama to “stand up for the rights of the American people.  Support a change to Obamacare so that Americans do not have to pay for abortions, and rescind your mandate to force religious institutions from participating in programs to which they object!”

NRLC was among the first to fight Obamacare’s mandates, its coverage of abortion in the exchanges, and its rationing of life-saving medical care.  Please help National Right to Life continue . . .  and win . . . the fight to repeal these anti-life provisions with a generous contribution today

President Obama recently told us about Obamacare that “the repeal debate is and should be over.”  Your contribution to help us repeal it is the best evidence that it is NOT!  Thank you for your life-saving support!

Priests for Life’s case – one of the very first launched against the HHS Mandate – will be argued in the second most important Court in the nation, the US Court of Appeals for the Washington, DC Circuit.

David Green, CEO of Hobby Lobby, told me, “Our family joins in prayerful support of the Priests for Life case against the HHS mandate.
