No Lamborghinis For Planned Parenthood

Hi  —

In 2013, Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider, received $528 million in taxpayer funding. That’s enough money to purchase almost 2,200 Lamborghinis.

If you saw the latest undercover video released about Planned Parenthood earlier this week, you know the reason I brought up Lamborghinis is because Dr. Mary Gatter, one of Planned Parenthood’s top “doctors”, joked about wanting to buy one of these luxury cars. She was haggling over the price of body parts harvested from aborted babies.

A week earlier, another undercover video showed Planned Parenthood’s Dr. Deborah Nucatola sitting at lunch calmly sipping wine while talking about “crushing” unborn babies and using the now-outlawed partial-birth abortion procedure to kill the innocent unborn. Reports indicate that there are even more videos on the way.

>>> PLEASE GIVE: Your donation of $25, $50, or your most generous gift today will help us continue to fight against Planned Parenthood and the atrocity of late-term abortion.

It is unconscionable that a top Planned Parenthood official can joke about buying expensive sports cars while talking about a “less crunchy” abortion procedure to better harvest baby organs. It is sickening that Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards could only bring herself to apologize for the “tone” of the first video, not the content. Planned Parenthood’s apologists, including Hillary Clinton, have fallen all over themselves to not comment on the matter.

Barack Obama’s press secretary said today he hadn’t even bothered to watch the video.

Currently there are at least 8 states conducting investigations of Planned Parenthood.

Congressional investigations are underway with possible hearings coming up.

Additionally, the U.S. Senate will soon vote on a bill that will stop abortions after five months. Outlawing these late-term abortions would prevent Planned Parenthood from being able to profit off the sale of body parts in the first place.

Your SBA List is working around-the-clock to fight the despicable practices of the abortion giant and to make sure your elected officials take immediate action. It starts with getting the Senate to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This limit on late-term abortions would save countless lives of the unborn and also wipe out part of Planned Parenthood’s income.

Mary, your support has been crucial to our successes in the past, and I want to thank you for that. Without supporters like you, we wouldn’t be able to do all the things we do to help protect life on a daily basis. I’d really appreciate it if you would dig deep right now and give us a gift of $25, $50, $100, or more today to help us fight against the inhumanity of Planned Parenthood.

Thanks again for all that you do to protect life and for your support,

Marjorie Dannenfelser
President, Susan B. Anthony List

P.S. Any amount is greatly appreciated – please give $10, $25, $50, or whatever you can.

Ohio Media Calls Out Planned Parenthood

Ohio Right to Life

Friend —

We’re at a turning point. Perhaps that sounds too optimistic, but take a moment to consider what has happened in the last 11 days: Planned Parenthood has been sent into a complete tailspin–damage control like we’ve never seen from them. Corporations are distancing themselves from the tarnished brand, and the media can hardly stomach the story.

Screen_Shot_2015-07-23_at_9.13.34_PM.pngLast week, the Columbus Dispatch ran the editorial cartoon on the right. It’s been picked up nationwide and the artist has Tweeted, “How can you not be disturbed by the Planned Parenthood news?”

The latest editorial calling out Planned Parenthood comes from Kevin O’Brien, the deputy editorial page editor at The Plain Dealer, who shared his piece via Twitter, saying: “Better definition for ‘sanctuary city’: a town with no Planned Parenthood.” Here’s an excerpt from his praiseworthy editorial:

Abortionists use a language rooted in a need to disguise brutal realities: Kevin O’Brien

It may not be time to write about this, because there may be more damning video to come from the Center for Medical Progress’ masterful ambushes of Planned Parenthood officials.

But it’s also the perfect time to write about this. I’m sitting in a hospital waiting room, waiting for my daughter to deliver my second grandchild, and babies are just kind of where my calvarium is at right now.

Calvarium? That’s abortion clinic lingo for “head.” As in the head of an unborn child. Or, to be more specific, a partially born child — who is being dismembered more carefully than usual, so once the deed is done, whatever “tissue” is in demand will be of the greatest utility to the “researcher.” That’s abortion clinic lingo for “buyer.”

“Tissue” is abortion clinic lingo for “parts of a human child” — as in, a person just like the rest of us, but defenseless, dehumanized, deprived of dignity and, ultimately, killed. But one thing “tissue” does not mean at Planned Parenthood is “profit center.” No, no. Never that. Tearing apart a child and parceling out his or her body is just a break-even deal, because making money from the sale of human parts is illegal….

TAKE ACTION:
Ohio Right Life has joined Greater Columbus Right to Life and Students for Life of America to ask you to stand up and be heard at the #WomenBetrayed Rally, Tuesday, July 28 at 11 A.M. at the Ohio Statehouse (West Lawn, High Street side).

This could not be more urgent–we need you there! It’s bad enough that unborn babies are being killed in these abortion mills–but Planned Parenthood is stripping their last bit of dignity away by haggling over their organs over lunch. If we don’t stand up to them, who will?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Planned Parenthood EXPOSED!
Cleveland Ohio

Today, the Center for Medical Progress broke the news that Planned Parenthood’s Director of Medical Services, Dr. Deborah Nucatola, has been using illegal partial-birth abortion methods to deliver children, who are then mutilated to extract body parts that are then sold.  Watch the video of this undercover interview released by the Center here.

“Besides this news being incredibly sad and barbaric, this practice is also illegal.  How low will this organization go to make a few bucks.  It appears that it is not enough that Planned Parenthood receives millions of tax payer dollars, they are still not satisfied and will now mutilate these children to sell their body parts.  I hope that every elected official in the country will now understand what an unscrupulous organization this is – and that the business and community groups nationwide cut their ties with the abortion industry” said Molly Smith, President of Cleveland Right to Life.

Please watch Dr. Deborah Nuycatola here, describe the procedure, in clinically cold term while eating a meal and drinking what appears to be a glass of wine!

The video also shows Cecil Richards, National President of Planned Parenthood, praising Dr. Nuycotola.

Please contact your local media groups and ask that they cover this breaking story.  The media must not be allowed to sweep this news under the carpet.

Your U.S. Senator (Senate.gov) and Congressional Representative (House.gov) should be contacted to request that all federal funding to Planned Parenthood be immediately stopped.

Any local or national community group who has ties with Planned Parenthood, such as Susan G Komen and Race for the Cure and the Girl Scouts, should cut all ties with this organization.

Please pray for our country.

Post-abortion woman tells her story of regret

NRL News Today

Post-abortion woman tells her story of regret

By Sarah Terzoabortion-hurts6Chicks on the Right published an anonymous letter from a postabortion woman. It is one more story showing how abortion scars women.

She was 18 when she became pregnant by her 22-year-old boyfriend. She remembers:

the stress, the grief, and the fear I felt when I looked down at that little plus sign.

She explains how she was afraid to tell her parents about her pregnancy:

I felt trapped. We were both raised in Catholic upper middle class families.… A secret abortion was the only option we could imagine. We felt it was a better option than facing our parents’ disappointed faces….

Too many teenagers are afraid to face their parents when they become pregnant. This is common in religious families, where the pressure on the pregnant minor to guard her secret can be extreme. Parents need to talk to their children about pregnancy and let them know that they can come to them if it happens. Christian family should not assume that their children will never make mistakes.

She describes how they went about looking for an abortion clinic:

I told my boyfriend and he went to the computer to start looking up abortion clinics.

Many abortion minded couples search for clinics online. The organization Online for Life attempts to redirect them to pregnancy centers where they will be given helpful information and support. Unfortunately, the boyfriend only found an abortion clinic.

The abortion clinic told her she needed to wait until they could detect the heartbeat of the baby. They scheduled the appointment for several weeks later. The couple first went to the clinic for the required counseling session. There were pro-life sidewalk counselors outside:

We … passed two elderly women sitting out front. One approached me and pointed to a building not too far away where she said they could help me if I only changed my mind. She gave me some pro life pamphlets and whispered “God bless you and your baby.”

The woman was not deterred. She says of the appointment:

The moment I spoke to the disgruntled nurse at the front desk I felt like a number. This appointment was for an ultrasound and the required “counseling”.

Nurse Grumpy called my name after an hour or so and led me back to an extremely perky nurse who informed me she was there to give me an ultrasound and check for a heartbeat. When she found what she was looking for, she took her pictures and started packing up. I asked her if I could see it and she looked at me like I was clinically insane. She told me it was against their policy before moving on to escort me to a counseling room.

Many, many women have said that the clinics refused to show them the ultrasound picture. I wrote one article about how clinic workers evaded the ultrasound law, and former abortion workers have confessed that ultrasounds were hidden. Former abortionist Joseph Randall said:

They [the women] are never allowed to look at the ultrasound because we knew that if they so much as heard the heart beat, they wouldn’t want to have an abortion.

After seeing a video about pregnant women’s options, the woman still wanted an abortion. The nurse:

explained the bleeding and pain would be similar to a period. Simple. Manageable.

The nurse then said goodbye.

But the young woman was not ready to leave. She still wanted to see a picture of her baby:

I asked Nurse Grumpy if I could see the ultrasound pictures. At first she said no. Then I explained to her that showing me these pictures wouldn’t hurt her but that I NEEDED to see them. She handed me my chart, flipped open to a picture the size of a notebook.

…. It blew my mind on every level. This was not a blob of cells at 7.5 weeks. It was a baby. For the first time, I questioned my decision for a few moments… And then I kissed my baby goodbye. I still felt this was my only option. I handed my chart back and walked out.

Two weeks later, she went in for her abortion.

We went through the same gates but this time without the women out front. I silently wondered where they were.

Sidewalk counselors, like everyone else, have busy schedules. But what would’ve happened if the counselors had been there?

In the waiting room:

[I] saw young girls with their moms, looking around nervously, as I was. I saw a woman in a wheelchair clutching the shoulder of her daughter with Down’s syndrome. I saw a father holding the hand of his daughter who appeared no more than 14. I saw a middle aged woman on her lunch break from work, lie to her husband about where she was. No one looked each other in the eyes. If we did, we would have to acknowledge in our minds why we were all there. To end a life.

Then it was time for the actual abortion:

I was only there for about 15/20 minutes, naked from the waste [sic] down, before a man whom I assumed was the doctor rushed in and grabbed a pair of gloves. Without an introduction, or a glance at my chart, he started prepping the vacuum … that was when the fear gripped me and I wanted to run. I just wasn’t sure if that was an option anymore. …

The pain was like nothing I could have ever imagined. I have sat through 4 hours of tattooing on my spine, had uterine cysts, had a miscarriage, given birth to two children via C-section. The closest thing to this pain would be final labor pains. There is just no other comparison.

The doctor yelled over and over again not to move, but with no one willing to hold my hand or anything for me to hold on to, my body had no way to embrace the pain without moving or screaming. I remember briefly looking down from the ceiling and seeing the door wide open while people walked in and out. No modesty allowed here. I looked back down in time to see the tube taking the child I would never meet away, the view of blood running through the tube still haunts me to this day.

The nurse escorted her, still bleeding, to the recovery room where she was only allowed to wait for 2 hours.

After my two hours was over they told me if I needed more time then I would have to walk down the stairs and wait in the lobby. I asked if someone could help me and they said it was against policy. I asked if my boyfriend could come help me and I got the same answer. I slowly walked downstairs, often stopping to sit. After 5 hours at the clinic that day, my boyfriend and I drove home. The whole hour all I did was cry.

She then describes the aftermath of her abortion:

I won’t bore you with the details of the complications I suffered for a year after or my days in college where I went through a horrible breakup or when I drank heavily to cover the pain in my heart or even the deep depression, suicide attempt, and hospital stay that followed my choice 18 months later. At 19, I finally realized the grief I had never dealt with grew and I finally learned to talk to my friends and family. I made one promise to myself though… No matter what, I would never have another abortion. I would make better choices. I would never have to make that choice again.

Two years later, she got pregnant again and kept the baby. Her family was extremely supportive, and her then boyfriend married her.

She still wonders about the baby she aborted:

There are still moments that make me wonder about my baby that was never born. I like to imagine he was a boy and would have had brown curls and black eyes just like his mommy.

She also has advice for pro-lifers:

I have been called a murderer, selfish, and a baby killer. While I will not try to convince you otherwise because I don’t disagree… I do want you to know words of hate will not help this important cause. Instead of slinging your words like swords at women who have made the same mistake as I, go after the real problem. Support groups who help find new jobs for abortion clinic employees …Volunteer at local women’s centers that don’t support abortion but instead provide counseling, classes, and assistance to women who choose life.

Don’t give up. Pray for those who struggle with the choice they have made, that they may find peace. Pray for those who have yet to choose, that they may choose life.

In sharing her story, this woman hopes to help others and educate about post-abortion trauma. She encourages pro-lifers to use her testimony to inspire them to fight abortion.

Pro-Life AG Mike DeWine Files Appeal Regarding Toledo Abortion Clinic

Facility Still Open After Being Order Closed Almost a Year Ago

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                      CONTACT: Katherine Franklin

DATE: Monday, July 13, 2015                                         PHONE: (614) 547-0099 ext. 304

AG Mike DeWine

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Friday, Attorney General Mike DeWine filed an appeal with the Sixth District Court of Appeals regarding a decision to allow Capital Care Network of Toledo to remain open. This abortion clinic has operated outside of the law since the Ohio Department of Health ordered it closed last year. State health officials ruled that the clinic was operating illegally because it failed to enter into a transfer agreement with a local hospital.

“The law is crystal clear and affords no loopholes to Ohio’s abortion industry,” said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life. “If the abortion industry wants to pretend like it’s a part of America’s traditional medical community, then it needs to play by the same rules. If a facility can’t meet those standards, then there’s no reason for us to believe that it should be allowed stay open and continue to risk the health of women and take the lives of babies.”
Unable to obtain a transfer agreement with a local hospital, Capital Care Network attempted to enter into a transfer agreement with an out-of-state hospital. Because the hospital is located over 50 miles away, the Department of Health ruled that it does not meet health and safety standards. While the abortion clinic’s legal counsel argued that this out-of-state hospital met the “local” requirement of the law, a hearing examiner ruled a year ago this week that it did not meet the definition of “local.” Last month, the Lucas County Court of Appeals ruled against the Ohio Department of Health, allowing the facility to remain open. An Ohio Right to Life initiative, signed into law with the state budget, brings further clarity to the law, defining “local” as within a 30-mile radius of a given facility.

“Ohio Right to Life and our statewide membership commend Attorney General Mike DeWine for his continued leadership on this case,” said Gonidakis. “This facility’s year-long push to flout Ohio law and to seek special privileges just goes to show how dogmatic and greed-driven the abortion industry truly is. Ohio Right to Life calls on the court to expedite the appeal, and restore the rule of law to our state.”

You Won’t Believe How This Pro-Life Doctor Saved a Woman’s Baby Midway Through an Abortion

You Won’t Believe How This Pro-Life Doctor Saved a Woman’s Baby Midway Through an Abortion

Dr. Delgado’s story began when he received a call from a friend in El Paso, Texas, who informed him about a woman who had taken the abortion pill but immediately regretted the decision.

At the 2015 American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) conference, Dr. Delgado told attendees, “I started thinking about my years of experience with progesterone, and how I’d used progesterone to try to prevent miscarriage.” The protocol calls for taking the injectable progesterone as soon as possible after taking the mifepristone.

Dr. Mary Davenport, another pro-life physician at the forefront of this new innovation, explained how chemical abortions involve two drugs:

“Medical [chemical] abortion is actually performed in early pregnancy with TWO pills, the first – RU-486 – mifepristone or Mifeprex, antagonizes the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for pregnancy. This cuts off the nutritional supply to the pregnancy, ending in the unborn baby’s death. One or two days later the woman takes a second pill, misoprostol or Cytotec, which causes uterine contractions and expels the pregnancy. Medical abortion is frequently a horrible experience for the women, lasting up to 2-4 weeks with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hemorrhage, and intense pain.”

The reversal attempts to counteract the first drug, mifepristone, before the second one, misoprostol, is ever given.

Progesterone is a critical hormone during pregnancy, said Delgado. It helps nourish the placenta, keeps the cervix closed, and inhibits contractions. Mifepristone, a progesterone receptor antagonist, acts like a “false key” binding with the progesterone receptor and blocking its activity. This action softens the cervix, makes the uterine wall more vulnerable to contractions, and attacks the placenta, Delgado said.

“I thought, well, maybe we can out-compete [mifepristone] at the receptor [using progesterone],” he said.

At a press conference held at the National Press Club, AAPLOG physicians reported that as of the end of 2014, 78 babies have been born after abortion reversal treatment, with 45 women still pregnant, a 57% success rate out of 223 attempted reversals.

One success story is Andrea Minichini, her boyfriend Chris Caicedo, and their son Gabriel David. Minichini, though still wrestling with the decision, took the first abortion pill, mifepristone, while the abortionist at Planned Parenthood cheered her on.

Instead of taking the second pill the next day, which would induce contractions, she began to look into ways to stop the death of her unborn child. Not surprisingly, the abortion center staff was no help. A local hospital informed her that if she carried the baby to term, he would face severe health issues.

A Google search led her to Dr. George Delgado in San Diego. On December 31, 2014, she delivered a healthy baby boy they named Gabriel David.

“Obviously women are changing their minds and interested in options,” said Delgado.

As noted, Dr. Delgado’s innovations have already saved 78 young lives. And that is just the beginning! AAPLOG recently unveiled a new “Emergency Abortion Pill Reversal Kit,” which they would like to see placed in emergency rooms and urgent care clinics nationwide.

Dr. Davenport observed that there are approximately 200,000 chemically-induced abortions annually in the USA.

Dr. George Delgado will address the National Right to Life Convention this summer in New Orleans, Louisiana. The event will run July 9-11 and also feature keynote speakers Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, John McCormack of the Weekly Standard, NRLC President Carol Tobias, and many more.

Incredible Display of Miscarried Babies Shows the Humanity of Preborn Children

Screen shot 2015-05-22 at 3.36.27 PM

Incredible display of miscarried babies shows the humanity of preborn children by Josh Brahm

On trip in Portland somebody told me that I couldn’t leave without seeing the Prenatal Exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, or OMSI.

The exhibit was created by Dr. Gunther von Hagens, the person behind the controversial “Body Worlds” exhibit. He uses a plastination technique to preserve animal and human bodies and sets up exhibits in an effort to educate people about anatomy in a way that books can’t. The exhibit is controversial because in the case of the human bodies, these were real people who arguably should have been buried. My staff and I have unresolved concerns about that aspect of it.

In the case of the prenatal development exhibit at OMSI, they only have babies who were miscarried and then preserved, presumably with the parents permission. (This exhibit isn’t to be confused with “Bodies: The Exhibition,” which is similar but whose bodies all came from China, adding to the controversy.)

According to the Body Worlds website:

The BODY WORLDS exhibitions rely on the generosity of body donors; individuals who requested that, upon their death, their bodies could be used for educational purposes in the exhibition. All the whole-body plastinates and the majority of the specimens are from these body donors; only some organs, fetuses and specific specimens that show unusual conditions come from old anatomical collections and morphological institutes.

I found a few images online of the exhibit that I’m going to include with this blog post to try to give you a visual of what we saw, but I firmly believe that these pictures don’t do the exhibit justice. I’ll explain why later in the post.

Before you get to the main exhibit, there are lots of walls set up with some of Lennart Nilsson’s famous fetal development pictures and explanations of human development.

OMSI Prenatal Exhibit

OMSI Prenatal Exhibit

My favorite area was an interactive display where you could push different buttons and LED lights would illuminate how the babies blood and the mother’s blood is kept separate, yet the mother’s body gives nutrition to the baby and carries away waste.

OMSI Prenatal Exhibit

Then we got to the main part of the exhibit, which is kept in a large, dark room, and a warning sign that reads:

“Attention. Viewer Discretion Advised. The human embryos and fetuses in this exhibit are real. The survival of these embryos and fetuses was prevented by natural causes or accidents. These specimens were collected from medical universities and hospitals and prepared by Dr. Hunther von Hagens, inventor of the plastination process and creator of the Body Worlds exhibitions. The exhibit was installed at OMSI in 1993.”

When Jacob walked in his first thought was, “There are so many of them.”

There are 42 embryos and fetuses preserved in glass cases along the curved wall. They start at the youngest and as you walk through the exhibit the babies get progressively older, until you reach the last child who was 33 weeks old and had a full head of hair.

Each baby has a sign under it giving the age from fertilization of the child and what is going on for a baby developmentally, at that age. The exhibit makes it clear that the ages attributed to the children is the actual time after fertilization, not LMP. There’s a sign on the wall that says:

“The embryos and fetuses in this exhibit are real. They are presented here to offer a unique look at the journey each of us made from a fertilized egg. Acquired from medical universities and hospitals, the survival of these embryos and fetuses was prevented by natural causes or accidents. The age given for each specimen is the actual time after fertilization, this is the aging method used by scientists studying human development. It is different from the method used by health care providers, who time a pregnancy from a woman’s last menstruation.”

OMSI Prenatal Exhibit

My immediate emotional reaction upon entering the room was sadness. There was a seriousness to this room, and the design of the room was clearly intended to underline the seriousness of the exhibit. This isn’t a place to let your kids run free like they can at some of the other sections of the museum.

The youngest baby was only a few weeks old, and was very small. I took my time, spending several moments in front of each child. As I looked at the youngest embryos, I thought to myself that I could understand why a pro-choice person could see this part of the exhibit and still feel convinced that these early embryos aren’t morally significant. I certainly think they are, but it’s not because of the way they look. It’s because of what I believe about the nature of all humans, including the youngest of us.

It became harder for me to step into the shoes of a pro-choice person and defend abortion rights later in the exhibit though. Around the point where the baby in front of us was nine weeks old, it became clearer than anything that this is a little human, not an unorganized mass of developing tissue.

As I was staring at a child who was about 20 weeks old my brother Tim came up to me to ask me what I was feeling. I paused, and then responded that I felt “intensely sad about abortion.” I asked him what he was feeling, and he replied, “As I looked at the younger embryos, I felt really sad, but the older they get, the more I feel angry.”

I reminded Tim that abortions at 20-weeks or later don’t happen nearly as often as first-trimester abortions before asking, “What specifically are you angry about?” Tim thought about it, and responded, “I’m angry that 20-week abortions are defended so often. I’m angry that our society is even having to debate whether or not to pass a bill that would ban abortions at this stage.”

We didn’t just feel angry about the late-term babies either. As I glanced to my left at the first-trimester babies, I thought, “These babies can be legally ripped to pieces, and they are, to the tune of about 3,300 every day.” At Equal Rights Institute it’s a priority to us to be very careful with philosophy, and understand why the most philosophical pro-choice advocates believe what they believe. And yet, staring at these children, I felt like I live in a society that has gone mad.

After I reached the end of the exhibit, I walked back to one of the babies. It was the one who died at 10 weeks. Many people don’t know that my wife and I lost a child 10 weeks into our first pregnancy. It is the most traumatic thing we have ever experienced. I felt like I needed to take this opportunity to remember my first son or daughter. So I stared at the 10-week child for several minutes, in silent memoriam. His body was longer than I expected a 10-week child to be. And as I stared at him, I felt like I connected with him a little. I once had a child, and he or she was alive while we were ecstatic about our first pregnancy. For the first few years of our marriage we weren’t sure we could get pregnant, and then we finally did, and I was so excited I would literally jump up and down when I told people! And then our child passed away, and a small part of me died with our child. I’ve never been the same.

We quietly left the exhibit, walked to our car, and processed together.

We talked about the difference between the babies who were eight weeks and younger, and those that were older. We agreed that it is equally sad that they all died, but we had more sympathy for pro-choice people who only defend early abortions than those who defend all abortions.

Tim said, “Nine weeks in, their humanity is not ambiguous anymore. They had distinguishable fingers and toes. They had different facial expressions.”

We spent a lot of time discussing whether an exhibit like this should exist. On one hand, it doesn’t feel respectful. As Tim said, “A human body made in God’s image shouldn’t be in a glass case.”

Tim had a good idea for how the exhibit could be more respectful in their treatment of the babies. “I wish each baby was named. Not that the guy who made the exhibit made up a name for them, that would be meaningless. I wish the parents had named their babies, because that would be their real name, and that you could read each name under their body. Each of these babies were somebody.”

Having said all of that, we agreed that while abortion remains legal, though we have reservations, we would prefer if an exhibit like this was in every major city in America.

This exhibit humanized the unborn more than Lennart Nilsson’s fetal development images or the graphic abortion images do, both of which we use in our outreach brochure. There are some pro-choice college students whose world would be rocked if they saw this exhibit, in a way that images don’t rock their world. Why? Because in this exhibit you’re in the personal, physical presence of unborn children.

A phone conversation can’t substitute for an in-person conversation. Tim asked me what I thought when I saw the Grand Canyon for the first time. My first thought was, “Pictures of this don’t do it justice. You can’t understand the enormity of this canyon without being physically there.” Tim said he thinks the same is true for unborn children. “Pictures of this exhibit wouldn’t be that compelling to show people. Being in the physical presence of a child is.”

This is similar to what I wrote after seeing a similar, albeit smaller, fetal development section of “Bodies: The Exhibition” seven years ago. I wrote:

“We talk about ultrasounds being the window to the womb. No, this is the window to the womb.”

I told Tim and Jacob, “I think we should treat bodies respectfully, but I’m full-time in the pro-life movement, and I’m a pretty even-keel guy, but I am SO much more devastated about abortion right now than I usually am.”

I recalled how at the end of “Bodies: The Exhibition” there were notebooks at the end where people could write their reflections. Here are some of the comments that I read:

“A strong case for the anti-abortion position.”

“I know life begins at conception.”

“…I don’t understand how someone could have an abortion after seeing all the embryos.”

“…I’m convinced that life begins far earlier than our society believes.”

“I really liked the part about the babies.” ~ A young girl

“We truly are fearfully and wonderfully made.”

“I don’t know how you could not believe in God after seeing this exhibit.”

“I was fascinated with the fetuses – I did not know they were so well formed even at seven weeks – who could ever abort a child?”

“There is no way I’m going to have an abortion…” ~ A 12-year-old girl

Jacob agreed that an exhibit like this is necessary for our society to see, but he wished it wasn’t.

As a full-time pro-life advocate who thinks about abortion a lot and tries to persuade others to become pro-life, I have sometimes struggled with how to balance grief in my pro-life work. There are some days that I don’t feel as sad about abortion as I ought to. There are two extremes I need to try to avoid: If I’m grieving all the time, it’s unhealthy, but if I never grieve, I’m disconnected from just how awful abortion is. I think seeing this exhibit helped me get a little more balanced on how grief should interact with my work.
