Connecting the dots–what We Can Learn about PPFA and the Traffic in Baby Body Parts

Connecting the dots–what we can learn about PPFA and the traffic in baby body parts

By Dave AndruskoCEO AND FOUNDER of Stem Express, Cate Dyer, stands next to a photograph of a stem cell and smaller magnetically charged antibodies on at Stem Express on Pacific Street on Nov. 12. As we’ve discussed elsewhere today, the Center for Medical Progress released the third in a series of undercover videos. Only this time, high ranking Planned Parenthood associates are not merely talking about baby lungs and brains and livers and hearts. In the third video we are taken inside a laboratory and shown the remains of an 11.6 week-old unborn baby laid out on a pie plate and being culled for saleable organs and tissues.

Also today the New York Times published a 1,459-word-long story on “fetal tissue” from abortions “for research.”

Not until one gets to the 25th paragraph–1,068 words in–does the reader learn “Fetal tissue sales are not limited to cells in a vial. More than a dozen research papers published since 2012 acknowledge obtaining intact fetal eyes, hearts, livers and kidneys from StemExpress.”

You would think that would merit mentioning in the first two paragraphs. But you would be wrong. Besides the Times might accidentally mention brains and lungs and that makes the transactions even grislier.

Who/what is StemExpress? According to Times’ reporters Denise Grady and Nicholas St. Fleur, StemExpress is a five-year-old business based in Placerville, California that “describes itself as ‘the largest provider of maternal blood and fetal tissue globally.’ It also says it offers ‘special discounts to the academic community.’”

So here are just three quick points, using quotes from the Times story.

#1. “Companies that obtain the tissue from clinics and sell it to laboratories exist in a gray zone, legally. Federal law says they cannot profit from the tissue itself, but the law does not specify how much they can charge for processing and shipping.” We won’t know how much PPFA charges–and for what–until a leading figure, like Dr. Nucatola, gives a briefing to staffers of a congressional committee.

#2. “A StemExpress brochure uncovered by the organization Center for Medical Progress, which was responsible for the leaked videos, contains an endorsement from a chapter of Planned Parenthood. It quotes Dr. Dorothy Furgerson of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte saying: ‘Our partnership with StemExpress is beneficial in a number of ways.’ It goes on to describe contributions to ‘lifesaving research,’ and its confidence that patients’ anonymity is secure.”

It’s not as simple as that, as we’ve discussed multiple times. In addition, the Times reporters do not talk about the heavy-duty selling points that PPFA affiliates use in trying to persuade women to “donate” their baby’s “tissue”: finding a possible cure of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. This is 90% hypothetical and 10% exaggeration. And

#3. Cate Dyer is the founder of StemExpress. Grady and St. Fleur write, “StemExpress uses procurement technicians to obtain fetal tissue. ‘We’re collecting biohazardous waste, discarded waste,’ Ms.  Dyer said. ‘They go to a hospital or to a facility that does terminations and collect tissues from those waste products.’”  What can you add to that dehumanizing description?

We are told by CMP that there are more videos to come. As they are made public, we will, of course, write about what they tell us.

Jahi McMath Lawsuit Percolates Under the Surface

Jahi McMath Lawsuit Percolates Under the Surface–>By WESLEY J. SMITH

Jahi McMath and mom

The law professor and bioethicist, Thaddeus Mason Pope, and I disagree about most issues. But I have to say, he sure keeps up on legal affairs of mutual concern.

Through his Medical Futility Blog and Twitter feed–as far as I know, it hasn’t been reported in the papers–I discovered that there is a hearing on July 30, in the medical malpractice suit filed against Children’s Hospital and the surgeon in the Jahi McMath case, to determine whether the case can go forward.

One of the primary issues in the case concerns whether Jahi is still alive, or dead because an earlier court ruling found that she was and a death certificate was issued.

I agreed initially, but concluded that the case should be reopened based on written declarations by respectable physicians that she is not brain dead. At the very least, there should be another thorough examination of Jahi since her body has not deteriorated, which happens in almost all brain death cases.

Children’s Hospital and the doctor are fighting this. And for a good pecuniary reason: If her terrible injury was caused by malpractice, the damages will be much higher if she lives than if she is dead. Of course, that is a sword that cuts both ways.

In any event, the medical malpractice case will go forward as a wrongful death case if her “death” can’t be overturned, of that I have no doubt (having no opinion on the outcome). More when I know more.

A huge HT to Thaddeus Pope for keeping abreast! This could be a very important case. Because if Jahi isn’t dead, it will make history.

“Five Star” Baby Parts: Planned Parenthood Caught Lying Again

LIVE ACTION

Dear Friend of Life,
Today, there can be no further denial that Planned Parenthood is selling the body parts of human beings for profit. A third investigative video released this morning by the Center for Medical Progress shows doctors callously sifting through pieces of an 11-week aborted baby, discussing an “intact” and “five star” kidney or spinal cord as if a price tag is attached to each.

From CEO Cecile Richards, down through the ranks, it is clear that Planned Parenthood is engaging in a system-wide enterprise of profiting from the calculated destruction of human life. First, Planned Parenthood sells an abortion for several hundred to thousands of dollars, then Planned Parenthood seeks to maximize its profit by selling the baby’s remains.

These practices are a direct attack on the most basic human rights, and Ms. Richards’ only response to the mountain of evidence is to continually lie and mislead the media, elected officials, and the American taxpayer.

Planned Parenthood received over $500 million in taxpayer money last year alone. It’s time to end the taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.

The Planned Parenthood Scandal Shows the Power of Exposing Abortion’s Grotesqueness

The Planned Parenthood scandal shows the power of exposing abortion’s grotesqueness

Jonathon van MarenJonathon van Maren Follow Jonathon

By Jonathon van Maren

July 23, 2015 (UnmaskingChoice) — If there’s one thing that confuses me about how many pro-lifers decide on strategies to change hearts and minds on abortion, it’s the fact that they seem to believe that we have to approach the most controversial issue there is without controversy—that somehow, we have to take an issue that people have incredibly strong feelings about and ensure that none of those feelings surface during a discussion.

As our postcard campaign nears our record-breaking mark of one million postcards delivered to one million homes, reactions have been widely varied—we have phone calls from people “horrified” by the postcard, who don’t seem to realize that the action depicted is much more horrifying. We have people who demand to know what they are supposed to say if their children see the picture of “the dead baby”—who don’t seem to realize that with their own words, they have admitted that we live in a country where dead babies are tossed in garbage cans behind government-funded clinics. We also have people who call us to thank us for the information, and express anger that such barbarism could be happening in Canada. We have people who phone to tell us that the postcard has changed their vote, and the votes of their neighbors. And we have people like the old man who wanted to shake my hand because he was encouraged to see that “some people cared about things.”

Huge numbers of Canadians have no idea that abortion decapitates, dismembers, and disembowels a pre-born human being. Huge numbers of Canadians are being exposed to that tragic and horrifying fact.

By the polling numbers, we see many people influenced against abortion—even if they don’t like us, the image stays with them, and they like abortion even less. Even if only ten percent of people were influenced against abortion because of postcards depicting abortion imagery, I would point out that that is still a far bigger number than any other pro-life strategy even claims to impact. For the first time, statistically significant portions of the population are being exposed to the reality of abortion—and they are reacting to that reality.

Pro-lifers are often tempted to run scared because they believe what the pro-abortion movement says about our best evidence—that it will “turn people” off. It will, of course. In the words of one abortion activist: “Your pictures turn people off of abortion.” If people get angry with us, but are still influenced against abortion, we have accomplished exactly what we set out to do. That being said, people only focus on the angry commenters that they see—a handful of social media posts, and the same tired news story from each and every single media outlet. I’m not sure if most journalists are unimaginative or just lazy, but most seem unwilling or incapable of even visiting a few websites and trying to find out what the rationale behind the strategy is. Most of them, I suspect, have pre-written stories and just call around to get the quotes they want. We know, for example, that reporters have specifically ignored people who have received the postcard and offered to comment positively—that is not, they openly say, the story they are looking for.

The abortion movement, on the other hand, can’t decide whether the imagery we use is extremely effective, or very ineffective. Canadian abortion blogger “Fern Hill” is usually babbling the talking points about how what we’re doing is so counter-productive, and that we’re obsessed with “gore porn,” and then calling us a bunch of names. (If pro-abortion groups really did believe that what we were doing strengthened support for abortion so much, I suspect that they’d be a lot less angry about what we’re doing—after all, we’re just doing their job!) But a couple of days ago, after responding to pictures of the dozens of lovely young women on our staff by snapping that they were all one unplanned pregnancy away from being pro-choice (such a depressing world these people live in), she tweeted an article at me that I found interesting.

It was a piece on David Daleidan of the Center for Medical Progress, the man behind the recent exposes of Planned Parenthood. He’s captured video of Planned Parenthood employees casually discussing not only the abortion procedure, but also how to best pillage the corpses of these dead children in order to sell their body parts for profit. The videos have horrified people across North America, and reaction has been swift. Amanda Marcotte, a pro-abortion blogger who often writes for Slate, has

responded to the new scandal in an article called “Grossing people out can have short-term impact, but does it matter in the long-term?” She quotes Michelle Goldberg over at The Nation:

Further, it’s a way for the anti-abortion movement to focus the abortion debate on the graphic details of rare, late-term procedures, about which there is less public consensus than there is about early abortion. It serves the same purpose as the ban on so-called “partial-birth abortion,” and as blown-up pictures of bloody fetuses. It induces disgust, a very politically potent emotion, since most people associate things that are gross with things that are immoral. In his book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion, Jonathan Haidt describes how researchers asked students at Cornell University to fill out surveys about their political attitudes while standing either near or far from hand sanitizer. Those standing closer to it became temporarily more conservative. If something that minor can affect people’s politics, then a video like this one is sure to have a visceral impact.

Amanda Marcotte goes on to say that while abortion imagery and exposes are very potent, that the impact of them is not long-lasting. Why? Because, she writes with hilarious immaturity, most things in life are gross—sex, going to the bathroom, surgery—and we all get over those things, don’t we? So surely abortion pictures will also be forgotten.

She’s forgetting something—abortion pictures aren’t powerful because they’re “gross.” Abortion pictures are powerful because they show the results of abortion—a dead, butchered human being. The power in the imagery is that people recognize that, and something in them responds to this injustice. It’s why even the people angry with our postcards have responded to the media by talking about the postcards depicting the “dead babies” or the “slain babies” or the “torn-up babies.” No-one thinks that what they’re looking at is a removed appendix. No one thinks that what they’re looking at is bodily waste. Everyone knows, almost immediately, that what they’re looking at is a dead human.

That is why the impact of abortion pictures doesn’t just disappear. One more piece of evidence? Almost everyone I know in the pro-life movement was convicted to join the pro-life fight because they saw a picture or a video of abortion, including myself. As Marcotte herself pointed out, that was what convicted David Daleidan as well. We now have over forty young people on our staff, all convicted by seeing what abortion does to babies and what they can do about it.

The movement is just getting started.

Urgent: Tell your Senators to Defund Planned Parenthood

Hi —
A third horrific Planned Parenthood video was released just this morning and news reports also indicate that the U.S. Senate could vote to defund Planned Parenthood as early as this week.>>> TAKE ACTION: Watch the video and contact your senators TODAY!

Today’s graphic video shows “fetal procurement specialists” inside Planned Parenthood harvesting the organs of a baby just killed by abortion.

Previous videos show Planned Parenthood’s top doctors haggling over the price of body parts from these children while calmly sipping wine and eating lunch. One of the officials even jokes about wanting a Lamborghini while bargaining for a higher price.

Your action over the past two weeks is making a difference. Members of Congress have called nvestigations. There could also be a Senate vote THIS WEEK to defund Planned Parenthood.

We need to fill their inboxes with messages right away so this vote takes place before they go home for the August recess.

Help keep this momentum going, Mary. I need you to contact your senators TODAY and tell them:

  1. To vote to defund Planned Parenthood this week
  2. To advance legislation to protect babies after five months

It will just take a minute  to contact your U.S. Senators using our action alert.

Thanks again for all you do and thank you for contacting your senators today.

For Life, Marjorie Dannenfelser President, Susan B. Anthony List
P.S. Be sure to contact your Senators TODAY and tell them to vote to defund Planned Parenthood this week!

Legislation to De-Fund Planned Parenthood Introduced in Ohio House
Pro-life State Leaders Speak at Pro-life Rally

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Today, at a pro-life rally co-hosted by Ohio Right to Life, State Representative Bill Patmon (D-Cleveland) announced the introduction of legislation to de-fund Planned Parenthood in Ohio. The introduction of this legislation comes on the heels of the release of videos revealing Planned Parenthood directors negotiating the alleged sale of parts of aborted babies. Representative Patmon and Representative Margaret Conditt (R-Liberty Township) are sponsors of the legislation, and 13 representatives have signed on as co-sponsors.

captioned_Bill_Patmon.png“In their own words, Planned Parenthood has graphically illustrated for the world the gruesome reality of abortion,” said Stephanie Ranade Krider, executive director of Ohio Right to Life. “Planned Parenthood has shown Americans what kind of ‘services’ their tax dollars pay for and proven themselves untrustworthy. Ohio Right to Life is grateful to Representatives Patmon and Conditt for taking charge in de-funding the abortion giant, and for their compassionate commitment to protecting human life in Ohio.”

In fiscal year 2013-2014, Planned Parenthood received $1.3 million in taxpayer subsidies in the state of Ohio. Federally, the chain received $528 million. According to the organization’s annual report, 94 percent of their pregnancy-related services were abortions, an increase from the previous year. The same year, adoption referrals and prenatal services dropped.

“Planned Parenthood’s rhetorical games are finally collapsing in a very public way,” said Krider. “No longer can they claim that the human children they are aborting are merely ‘clumps of cells.’ They are human beings with their own bodies–bodies which seem to have value to Planned Parenthood if they can get a fair price. The American people’s revulsion is clear and justified, and we’re proud to see our leadership responding so swiftly.”

Recently, Attorney General Mike DeWine launched an investigation of Planned Parenthood in Ohio. Governor John Kasich, State Auditor Dave Yost, and Secretary of State Jon Husted released statements on the scandal. At today’s pro-life rally at the Ohio Statehouse, Lt. Governor Mary Taylor, Auditor Yost, Secretary of State Husted, and Ohio Senate President Keith Faber addressed the need to protect human life in Ohio.

Ohio Right to Life and our statewide membership thank all elected officials for their continued leadership on this critical issue.

Moms can teach their unborn babies nursery rhymes, study shows

By Dave Andrusko

Editor’s note. We posted elsewhere today about a remarkable study in which researchers concluded babies who were placed for adoption with parents from another country nonetheless retained an “unconscious knowledge of their mother tongue.” That reminded me of this delightful story that we ran last year.

What an incredible coincidence. Just this morning (as is my habit) I scanned both today’s Washington Post and a couple of stories from a few days ago. I came across this fascinating article, dated July 19, written by Meeri Kim headlined “Babies grasp speech before they utter their first word, a study finds.”

In one paragraph, here’s the gist:

“A new study has found that a key part of the brain involved in forming speech is firing away in babies as they listen to voices around them. This may represent a sort of mental rehearsal leading up to the true milestone that occurs after only a year of life: baby’s first words.”

Honestly, I thought to myself, this is great but wouldn’t it also be helpful if a story ran about some of the latest research documenting what unborn babies can learn. Lo and behold…

From a section on the TODAY Show blog, here’s a story by Linda Carroll: “Fetuses can learn nursery rhymes from mom’s voice, study finds.” Here’s Carroll’s lead sentences:

Even before they are born, babies [note, babies, not “fetuses”] are learning from experience, especially if it’s directly related to their moms, new research shows. For example, while in the womb babies can learn to recognize a nursery rhyme if the mom repeats the verses between weeks 28 and 34, according a study published in Infant Behavior and Development.”

Thirty-two moms of babies who were in their 28th week were recruited. They recited a nursery rhyme twice a day until the 34th week. Four weeks later the mothers returned to the University of Florida.

Carroll answers an obvious but intriguing question: how do you record an unborn baby’s brain activity? It’s not as difficult as you might think. [www.today.com/parents/fetuses-can-learn-nursery-rhymes-moms-voice-study-finds-1D79962083]

Researchers already knew that the heartbeat of a baby later in pregnancy will slow down when she hears something familiar.  Carroll wrote

“So, while the moms wore headphones playing Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons,’ a female stranger’s voice recited either the familiar rhyme or a completely different one. The headphones kept the moms from actually hearing when or what their fetuses were being exposed to.

“The heart rates of fetuses who heard a stranger read the familiar rhyme slowed down. The heart rates of those who heard the stranger reading a different rhyme essentially stayed the same.”

The study’s lead author, Charlene Krueger, an associate professor in nursing, told Carroll, “We were basically asking the fetus, if your mother says this repeatedly, will you remember it?” Krueger’s “take away message”?

I would want mothers to understand is that their speech is very important to the developing fetus. When a mother speaks, not only does the fetus hear, but also the whole spine vibrates.”

Not until late in the story is the reader reminded that speech is not the only thing unborn babies “absorb” in the womb. “Studies have shown that around the 20th week of pregnancy the sensory systems for taste and smell have developed,” Carroll writes. “And that allows the baby to experience some of mom’s favorite foods as nutrients pass into the womb.”

Krueger actually had another takeaway, only this time it was for medical personnel taking care of preterm infants. They should consider playing recordings of moms talking to their babies.

My goal really is to identify experimentally the benefits of providing this kind of exposure to the preterm infant who has largely lost hearing a very important voice – the mother’s.”

Whenever media coverage is fair, pro-life case for life shines

By Dave Andrusko

NARAL-Prez-HogueElsewhere today at NRL News Today, NRLC Director of Communications Derrick Jones writes about the media coverage of the 45th National Right to Life Convention. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Outside the immediate context of our three-day educational extravaganza in New Orleans, what, in general, would constitute a balanced story on abortion? You could argue, for example, that such a report would include comments from both sides, commentary from a “neutral” third party, and an unwillingness to caricature the pro-life perspective. Using those criteria, a ten-minute report on ABC’s Nightline more that fills the bill. And in this case it advertently goes above and beyond. Let’s talk about ABC reporter Gloria Rivera’s piece, which is built around interviews with two young female pro-life leaders (Live Action President Lila Rose and Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins ) and a rebuttal (so to speak) from NARAL President Ilyse Hogue (http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/young-faces-anti-abortion-movement-32348116). Rivera begins her story using the 2015 March for Life as a backdrop. It would be impossible to think of an event that better illustrates how young people are flocking to the pro-life side. The March, held each year in Washington, DC, attracts a huge audience–estimates range from 100,000 to 250,000– most of whom are young folks. But the best part of the program is poor Hogue’s rebuttal. Even though Rivera is priming Hogue with sympathetic questions, seated passively on a chair in a studio, the contrast between her remarks and the pro-lifers’ high energy responses is impossible to miss. Sure the young women are “charismatic” and “look great,” she concedes. But their core beliefs, Hogue insisted, are “old and outdated and still out of touch with mainstream Americans.” Hogue’s told Rivera that pro-lifers “abandoned” their old message (or more specifically, old messaging) because we were “losing.” But because our “core beliefs” are out of touch with the American people, all it’s really accomplished is to rally the “silent majority.” (I guess passage of hundreds of laws that pro-abortionists such as Hogue lament on a daily basis doesn’t count.) Let’s deconstruct what Hogue is saying and see if there are any points of contact between her arguments and reality. The reason the Pro-Life Movement could endure years in the desert (see presidents such as Clinton and Obama) is because of the rightness of our cause, our multi-front operation that extends from the local neighborhood through the state legislatures to the halls of Congress, and our willingness to win what we can today (and just a little more than anyone expected!) and come back to take the next step forward in the next legislative session or the next election. Hogue is right in that our core message hasn’t changed: we are in it for the unborn baby and her mother, and we are in it for the long haul. The difference is that over 42 years of abortion on demand have come with a steep price–over 57 million unborn lives lost and untold numbers of women emotionally and physically maimed– that is so egregious that, coaxed by the pro-life movement, the public is moving steadily in the direction of life. Hogue’s argument, in effect, is that we have overshot the mark, causing a reaction. But in fact, the only “silent majority” is the American public, a majority of which opposes the reasons for which at least 90% (maybe 95%) of all abortions are performed. Come to any of National Right to Life’s annual conventions, or to our office where interns and members of the NRLC Academy are learning how to argue the case for life, and you will see why every so often NARAL gets so frustrated it allows the truth to escape: they are fading, our Movement is thriving. Quick final thought. The (almost) obligatory “neutral” third party was absent from Rivera’s report. Why is that important? Because almost without exception, this “expert” will hew to the pro-abortion line while donning the mask of objectivity. Great NRLC convention, great Nightline report.

NRLC laws needed to limit selling of baby tissue

 National Right to Life
When Planned Parenthood’s senior medical director was caught on video admitting that their abortionists would adapt their late abortion procedures to do them in a way that they could sell the body parts – hearts, lungs, livers, even whole heads – many people were shocked and surprised.
We weren’t.
Sadly, we know all about the business Planned Parenthood is in.  They’re in the business of killing unborn babies.  We know they, like many abortion clinics, sometimes have a problem disposing of the bodies of the unborn babies they kill.  If they can make a few dollars selling parts of those bodies, it’s not surprising at all they would do so.
There have been calls for legislation to stop this grisly practice.  But since the companies that buy these body parts prefer them from older unborn babies, one of the most effective way of at least limiting this abuse would be to pass the national Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
Think about it:  These companies often specifically look for tissue from unborn babies older than 20 weeks – in other words, they are hunting for and encouraging the abortion of babies old enough to feel excruciating pain when they are aborted!
Our Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, already enacted in 12 states and passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, would ban elective abortions past this age.  And our Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortions Act, passed recently in two states, would further greatly reduce the number of abortions performed at the stages that can produce the large, well-developed organs often desired by the vendors in baby body parts. Please help us pass these needed laws in more states, and the Pain-Capable bill as it moves to the U.S. Senate. Your financial support can help us educate the American public on the tragedy of these later abortions; activate them to call and write their elected officials to get them to pass these protections; and save many, many lives of precious unborn children who should never be thought of as body parts to be sold after they are dismembered so horribly and callously.
Please help us stop this abuse, and the tragedy of these later abortions with your generous donation today.
Thank you.

The One Sentence We Need to Say to Everyone to Begin a Pro-Life Revolution

Rebecca Kiessling

Featured Image

The one sentence we need to say to everyone to begin a pro-life revolution

Rebecca Kiessling

Today is my birthday.  I’m not at all ashamed to tell my age because it’s very relevant.  I was born July 22, 1969 — exactly 10 months before the hearing date in Texas in Roe v. Wade, and exactly 3-1/2 years to the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion throughout the U.S.

I was conceived when my birthmother was abducted at knifepoint by a serial rapist.  She went to two illegal “back-alley” abortions, and I was almost aborted.  That was my life-changing, near-death experience.

When we met, when I was 19, even though she was very happy to meet me, my birthmom was pro-choice and told me she absolutely would have aborted me if it had been legal. She said this should have been her right.

Six years later, she completely changed her mind on the issue, and now we are both thankful that we were both spared the horror of abortion.

Many people will say to me, “I’m so glad your mother chose life.”  But she didn’t.  She chose abortion.

Pro-life legislators, activists and voters chose life for me, and they are my heroes!  I owe my birth to the law being there to protect me.  I was lucky — I was protected.  Legality matters.

In the mid-1960’s, there were efforts to legalize abortion in cases of rape all over the country.  Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe from Roe v. Wade) even lied, claiming she was gang-raped, in order to try to obtain an abortion in Texas.

But I’m from Michigan, where there has never been a rape-exception in any laws.  This is why I have a birthday to celebrate!

I’m so blessed to have people say many profound things to me as a travel around the world sharing my story.  I get to hear things which many people don’t get to hear in everyday life — things like, “I’m so glad you were born!”  I’m so very grateful for those words, but I believe that everyone deserves to hear them like I do.

Whenever someone shares their personal story with me, or whenever I see it’s someone’s birthday on Facebook, or when someone tells me it’s their birthday, I make a point of telling them, “Happy birthday — I’m so glad you were born!”

I’m amazed at how moved they are — many responding with “Wow, thanks so much!  No one has ever said that to me before.”

We need to be saying these words to one another.  There are many who are hurting from our abortion culture who have bought the lie that their lives don’t really matter.  So please, take the time to tell others that you are so glad they were born.

Two years ago, on my birthday, my birthmother called to wish me happy birthday and to tell me that my biological grandmother had died earlier in the day.  I was born on her wedding anniversary, and she died on my birthday.  We had both been to visit her a few weeks before.  I got her to smile and to laugh by singing, “You Are My Sunshine.”

Please understand that God gave me the gift of voice for speaking only!  So, you can understand why anyone would laugh.

My birthmother and I had a long heart-to-heart.  I told her that I had just arrived the night before to visit my in-laws in Massachusetts, but that I would fly home to be with her.

At the end of our conversation, we were about to hang up when she stopped me:  “Rebecca, Rebecca!”  Then her voice broke, “I just want to say, I’m so glad I had you!”  That was the best birthday gift ever!

This morning, I wrote this poem to share on Facebook, and I’d like to share it here as well:

Today I was born!

I could have been torn
from my mom’s womb,
her body my tomb.

But I have a birth
because others saw my worth.

See, I was protected
instead of dissected.

Today, I can celebrate
instead of having hate
for her rapist and
the abortion man.

So when you say,
“Happy birthday,”
please be aware
of why I am here,
and that others are yet neglected
when they should be protected.
