15th Annual Cardinal O’Connor Conference on Life to be held January 20

CardinalOConnor4Founded in 2000, the Cardinal O’Connor Conference on Life, the largest student run pro-life conference in the nation, seeks to bring together hundreds of students and activists to discuss the importance of defending the sanctity of life.

The 2014 Conference will be held Monday, January 20 at Georgetown University two days before the annual March for Life. Speakers will focus on Morality and the Law with a morning panel discussion titled “Publicly Pro-Life: Why Abortion Is Not a Private Issue.”

Additionally, there will be an afternoon keynote address by Robert P. George, the founder and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. Breakout speakers will discuss a variety of life issues, including the international pro-life movement and the impact of abortion on women.

The Conference will conclude with a Mass for Life celebrated in Georgetown University’s Dahlgren Chapel by Bishop Michael Barber, S.J. of Oakland.

The Cardinal O’Connor Conference was founded by Georgetown students in January 2000 and renamed after the death of His Eminence, John Cardinal O’Connor, the late Archbishop of New York and great champion of the sacredness of every human life. The Conference, which remains entirely student run, intends to connect and educate students, clergy, activists, and academia from around the country.

KILL THE ANIMALS!

January 2, 2014
Dear Friend,

If you have been receiving our regular e-mail messages, you know that I try to use a subject line that will get more people to open the mail! Even the most passionate of us sometimes ignore messages that we should read because we think it is going to be more of the same!   I hope the subject of this message got your attention and that you’ll forward this to as many as you can!

Of course you know that I’m not advocating killing animals! Our mission is to save innocent human life. We are highly criticized for opposing abortion, euthanasia and more, and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been called a terrorist, woman hater, idiot and much more (and worse, too). If we show pictures of ultrasounds, or God forbid, show a photo of an aborted child, it gets even worse. We DO know that the bulk of the opposition and marketing against us is being funded by the lucrative abortion industry. As moral human beings, we are lambasted for trying to protect children…and YES they are children, even before they are born. Why am I dwelling on this now?   I’ve experienced some personal hardship and family tragedy this holiday season that is making me ultra sensitive to everything. I can’t help but feel the irony of the situation while watching the myriads of fund raising commercials for the ASPCA, Save The Whales and more over the holidays. While viewing photos of neglected and abused animals, some of things I’ve heard on these commercials include:

  •  From Dogs In Danger: “Tell your friends to adopt dogs instead of buying in pet shops. Adopting dogs rather than buying from pet shops will save thousands of dogs from being euthanized in shelters every day. A dog is killed approximately every 9 seconds. Teach your children to value dog’s lives. Learning to value life begins at an early age. Studies have shown that teaching children how to stop the neglect and abuse of animals through early humane education stays with them into adulthood”.
  •  From Save the Whales: It “was founded in 1977 when Maris Sidenstecker was 14 years old, and focuses on educating the public, especially children, about marine mammals and the fragile ocean environment. Save the Whales believes children, the future of the planet, need to be empowered and know that their actions can promote change. Education is the key to saving whales, oceans, and ourselves.”
  • From AnimalsVote.org: “We asked 2,500 shelters across the U.S. to stop killing dogs and cats for one day a week. We said please stop killing animals on all Mondays, beginning on Monday, December 23 and continuing for all Mondays. We said let’s work together to change how people think about the shelter system and animal adoptions in the U.S.”
  • From the ASPCA: “Just $.60 a day saves lives. Give a little to make a big difference for animals.”
  • From the Human Society of the United States: “The HSUS and its affiliates are the nation’s number-one provider of animal care, through the work of our animal sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers, Animal Rescue Team, Pets for Life program, wildlife response units, veterinary division, international street dog defenders, and other hands-on programs……that’s why the HSUS, through its advocacy programs, drives transformational change-bringing a wide set of tools to take on the biggest fights, confronting multi-billion dollar industries, and staying the course until reform is realized.”

These groups are all legitimate, and all have great causes.  I’m NOT telling anyone not to support them. The irony is that in today’s society, many people would rather save animal life than human life.   The programs and strategies invoked to save animal life are things WE do, but we are called terrorists, especially by our current national administration.  Even if we could afford to run commercials like the organizations above do, chances are that the networks wouldn’t run them because they would be considered “too controversial“!  I’m not kidding!

My niece was expecting identical twin girls to be born this spring. A few days ago, one of the twins died in the womb, and the doctors had to deliver the twins at 24 weeks in order to save the life of the surviving twin. Emma Elizabeth came into this world weighing 1 pound 2 ounces and is a little fighter.   My family is going through immense pain mourning the loss of Emma’s sister while at the same time being joyous and cautiously optimistic for Emma’s survival. I can’t even imagine what my niece and her husband are feeling! What is killing me is that there are so many people in the world that choose to end the lives of their children through abortion….even as late as 24 weeks…and condemn those of us who fight for the right to life for all human beings at ANY stage of development.

It is so hard to realize that there are those who go ballistic when animals are harmed, but have looked the other way or ignored the more than 55 million children who have been KILLED (yes, they were killed…nothing pretty about it) through abortion since it was “legalized” in 1973. What’s even worse is that the “legalization” was nothing more than what a woman could be allowed to do under her “right to privacy.”

It’s obvious I’m depressed and upset, but that doesn’t mean I’m stopping. Christ died on the cross so that ALL of us could live with him eternally. I know He put me here….and hopefully you, too….to make sure that the human lives God creates at conception can have the opportunity to experience their human life before joining with Him for eternity.   Our work goes on….

Save Lives NOW!

January 22, 2014 marks the tragic 41st anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the day in 1973 that the United States Supreme Court made it legal to kill an unborn child. It has become a tradition every year to remind our community that there are many Americans who have not accepted this court decision.

Several years ago, Right to Life of Northeast Ohio spearheaded a media campaign which uses the internet (the number 1 choice for most pregnant women seeking an abortion), advertisements on public transportation, television and radio, and mobile phone applications. All the media (including internet and television) is aimed directly at those in crisis pregnancies, and directs them to trained counselors and an ultrasound. This campaign has been hugely successful, and has spread across Ohio helping to save lives now by offering life saving options to abortion minded individuals.

To keep this highly successful program going, many churches, schools or other organizations will be conducting the Signature and Media Campaign starting in January.

Hillary Clinton was talking about the American deaths in Benghazi when she made the infamous remark above, but the ludicracy of the statement fits right in here:  at the rate we are killing our unborn children, saving animals won’t matter or make a difference because there will be enough humans around to harm them!

More People Have Lost Insurance Under Obamacare Than Signed Up for It

More People Have Lost Insurance Under Obamacare Than Signed Up for It

by Dave Andrusko | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 12/31/13 12:36 PM

A few thoughts today and a few more tomorrow as we are just hours away from when the impact of ObamaCare really hits the American populous—January 1, 2014.

* From “That Health Care Law, By the Numbers,” by the Associated Press’s Calvin Woodward

“4 million-plus: People whose individual plans were canceled because the plans didn’t measure up under the law [ObamaCare]. The government changed rules to allow substandard plans to exist for another year; it’s not known how many canceled policies will be revived. Another rules change allowed cancellation victims to sign up for bare-bones catastrophic coverage.

How many have signed up, through HealthCare.gov and the state health exchanges? Up to but no more than 2 million. That’s the “good news,” according to Jim Geraghty.

The bad news?  “That puts them at about 26 percent of their enrollment goal of 7 million, with half the enrollment period passed.” (And, of course, like all Obama numbers always, there will be a later revision of the number that has supposed signed up–downward.)

Conclusion? “[W]e’re still ending 2013 with more people having lost their insurance than gained it,” Geraghty reminds us.

* We know from multiple stories (including nrlc.cc/1h9MoMX and nrlc.cc/1h9MtjM) that Millennials—18-29—are turning on Obama and on ObamaCare. “57 percent of millennials disapprove of Obamacare, with 40 percent saying it will worsen their quality of care and a majority believing it will drive up costs. Only 18 percent say Obamacare will improve their care. Among 18-to-29-year-olds currently without health insurance, less than one-third say they’re likely to enroll in the Obamacare exchanges,” according to a survey by Harvard University’s Institute of Politics.

* One more. I have relatives who are the owners of small businesses. In the last month, media outlets are beginning to understand what they have known since 2010: the costs of ObamaCare for them are prohibitive. NBC News did an investigative piece on the effects on workers at one auto dealership. The blogger Allahpundit captured what is taking place:

“A sneak preview at America 2014 from the Ghost of Christmas Future. It’s not the premiums that are killing these people, although those are higher in some cases too. It’s the out-of-pocket costs. The media coverage of O-Care has paid less attention to those for the simple reason that no one’s actually incurred them yet. That’ll change on Thursday.”

As is the case over and over again, the company’s existing insurance policy was cancelled because it didn’t meet the ObamaCare requirements. It would have cost the auto dealership almost 50% more to have kept deductibles and out-of-pocket costs at the 2012 levels, according to insurance broker Michael Harp, quoted in the NBC News story. So the company gave their workers a set amount of money from which they could either not get insurance (and pay a penalty) or get a policy through the healthcare exchanges.

The most significant conclusion Harp drew?

“He said the biggest surprise to him in how the law impacts small business clients is ‘how many people are losers versus winners. … There are some people who do come out ahead, but I would say the overwhelming majority, they’re paying much higher rates and they have lower benefits.’”

In addition

“Harp says what is happening at this dealership is representative of the other small businesses he deals with. Businesses with 50 or fewer employees currently provide health insurance to about 17 million U.S. workers, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.”

Pediatrician: Jahi McMath is Not “Brain Dead,” Can Recover With Proper Care

Pediatrician: Jahi McMath is Not “Brain Dead,” Can Recover With Proper Care
A leading pediatrician says that Jahi McMath, who is at the center of a national debate about whether she should remain on life support, is not “brain dead” and can recover with proper care and nutrition. Late Monday afternoon, the judge in the case granted an extension for life support after a legal request from her family’s attorney.

Dr. Paul A. Byrne, a Neonatologist who is the Director of Neonatology and Director of Pediatrics at St. Charles Mercy Hospital in Oregon, Ohio, has given a new interview to a local NBC television station.

Byrne is also a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics University of Toledo College of Medicine and the past president of the Catholic Medical Association. Byrne told the station he does not believe that brain death is “true death” and said, with “proper nutrition and care,” McMath can have meaningful recovery to the degree that she would not meet the “brain death” criteria. He also said as much in court findings that Christopher Dolan, the attorney for McMath’s family.

At the time of the interview, Dr. Byrne had not yet had an opportunity to examine Jahi in person.

Couple Decides To Keep Baby – After She Survives First Abortion Attempt

Couple decides to keep baby – after she survives first abortion attempt

BY BEN JOHNSON

BRISTOL, UK, December 31, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A young British couple in turmoil has decided to keep their unborn baby girl – after the child survived a previous attempt to abort her.

Jon Kent/Bristol Post

Shannon Skinner, 19, said she and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Anthony Hunt, had relationship issues. She was also experiencing postpartum depression after the birth of their infant daughter, Lacie, who was then just four-months-old.

They decided to have a chemical abortion at the Marie Stopes office in Stoke Gifford on September 20, her eighth week of pregnancy. Skinner also had a hormonal contraceptive implant placed in her arm.

But morning sickness and sensations of a baby moving inside her womb persisted. And home pregnancy tests came back positive.

Doctors said these side-effects were common after an abortion. After three months of continued pregnancy symptoms, Skinner insisted on a return visit. On December 20, a new pregnant test confirmed her suspicions: The two abortion-inducing drugs they administered had failed, and she was still pregnant.

Skinner had barely gotten over the grief of aborting her own child when she found out that she had a second chance to give her baby life. “I had grieved for that baby and we’d just managed to get our heads around” the abortion, she said. “I’d always been one of those people that was against abortions and hated them.”

Marie Stopes International said the fine print shows three to four percent of all medical abortions fail. “We discuss this with any woman considering the treatment and advise on the necessary follow-up to monitor for a failure, so further treatment may be sought if needed,” the group said in a statement.

At 20 weeks along, Skinner still had four weeks to seek an abortion under UK law. But after an ultrasound allowed them to see their – a girl – they changed their minds.

“We’ve now decided to keep the baby, as we don’t feel it’s right to have an abortion at this stage,” Skinner said. “She’s obviously a little fighter, and we don’t want to cause it any more harm.”

“When I had the abortion it didn’t feel the same as it does now,” Skinner said. “We have seen her, and she has a heartbeat now.” (The fetal heartbeat develops earlier than many people realize, between the fifth and seventh week of pregnancy.)

Skinner told the Bristol Post she’s worried for the safety of her child. “The medication can cause abnormalities, and I’m halfway through my pregnancy without receiving any medical attention,” she said. Although the ultrasound showed the baby girl is currently healthy, Skinner says “there’s no guarantee how it’s going to go” when she gives birth on May 7. But she’s decided to let her child live, come what may.

Activist Upset Women Under 40 are Pro-Life, Not Open to Supporting Abortion

Activist Upset Women Under 40 are Pro-Life, Not Open to Supporting Abortion

by Nancy Flanders | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 12/30/13 1:44 PM

On December 4, 2013, Donna Schaper, Senior Minister at Judson Memorial Church, expressed her frustrations regarding abortion rightsHobby Lobby, and the Supreme Court in a piece for The Huffington Post entitled “Most Women Under 40 Haven’t Heard the Pro-Choice Moral Argument.”

I’m a woman under 40, so I gave Schaper a chance to teach me about this pro-choice moral argument through her article. All I learned is that like most pro-choice women, Schaper doesn’t understand that being anti-abortion is not even remotely the same as being anti-women. Schaper writes:

It is painful to have to fight for what is already won, even more painful for one Christian to have to argue with another one about the freedom of the human to make choices. It is sad as well to see the constant struggle – now initiated by a toy and hobby company – about women being choice making human beings. What is it about women that the religious right can’t tolerate? Is it that important for us to be sub-human? Do that many people really think of women as toys or hobbies or second-class citizens? Apparently, yes. The core argument needs to be made again, no matter how hoarse we are in making it.

Schaper’s argument is that women are “choice making human beings.” I agree, as would any other person who is anti-abortion. As a woman, I make choices every single day. Some are good, like the choice to feed my children a healthy breakfast. Some are not so good, like the choice to feed myself cookies for lunch or procrastinate my work.

Schaper also writes that “assuming that a woman cannot decide for herself if and when to bear a child demeans women.” Being pro-life doesn’t mean I don’t value women. Quite the opposite is true. Being pro-life means that I believe in the strength of women. That I believe women are capable and loving and intelligent. Abortion devalues women.

Abortion tells a woman that she isn’t good enough to care for her child. That her child isn’t good enough to be adopted and loved by another couple. That there’s no way she can be both a mother and a student or a mother and a career women. Abortion is not a feminist act. Abortion is the killing of two human beings – the baby in flesh and spirit and the mother in spirit.

A Look Back at 2013: What Priests for Life Has Done

A Look Back at 2013: What Priests for Life Has Done

December 30, 2013

Below is my latest column, Christmas and Holy Impatience, but first let me give you some other important updates.

I have prepared two important reports that I invite you to read, the Priests for Life Report for 2013 and the Priests for Life Plans for 2014.  You are part of our Priests for Life family, and so you share the credit for what we have accomplished! We look forward to having you be part of what 2014 will bring! Meanwhile, please feel free to spread these reports to others you know who may be interested in our work!

Join us for a Novena in Reparation for Roe vs. Wade from January 14-22.  Find the prayer at prayercampaign.org.

We are gearing up for the January Pro-Life events in Washington, DC and San Francisco, CA.  Please join me for the 20th Annual National Memorial for the Preborn and Their Mothers and Fathers on January 22, the day of the March for Life, from 8:30-10:30am at DAR Constitution Hall, Washington, DC.   I will be joined by clergy from across the country and across denominational lines.   There will be a Mass before the event at 7:30am at the same location.   For more information see NationalPrayerService.com.

Are you leading a bus/group to Washington DC for the annual March for Life? Or do you know the organizer(s) in your community who are doing so? We will once again make special materials available for the people on your bus. Just let me know if you are interested, at orders@priestsforlife.org. (If you are a bus captain yourself, please let me know that, too!)

For more information on March for Life events in Washington, DC and San Francisco, see PriestsForLife.org/MarchForLife. We are also inviting men and women who have lost children to abortion and have found healing to consider marching with us in either city, and to share their testimonies as part of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. See SilentNoMore.com if you are interested!

As you may have heard, the judge in our case in District Court in Washington DC ruled against us regarding the HHS mandate. Because the mandate would go into effect for us on January 1, we filed, within an hour of the judge’s decision, an emergency request with the US Court of Appeals for the DC circuit, to provide an injunction to maintain the status quo, protecting us from the mandate until our appeal to the same court can be heard and decided.  We expect to get a decision from the Court of Appeals today or tomorrow. Please keep this in your prayers.  Go to PriestsForLife.org/HHSMandate for more information.

Finally, LifeTalk for January 2014 has been posted and is ready to watch.  This is a powerful and informative pro-life show that I am on with Mark Crutcher and other pro-life leaders.  Go to lifetalktv.com.

Blessings,

Christmas and Holy Impatience

by Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director, Priests for Life

Christmas is about self-giving love. God becomes human to set humanity free from the oppression of sin and death.

Accepting Christ, and celebrating Christmas, means welcoming that freedom, and striving that every human being may experience it. Hence we evangelize.

And hence we work for justice. “Truly he taught us to love one another; His law is love, and His Gospel is peace. Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother, and in His name, all oppression shall cease.” (“O Holy Night”).

Abolitionists used this verse of this Christmas hymn to stir their fervor to end slavery. Today, we in the pro-life movement use it to stir our fervor to end abortion.

And we do so in the spirit of William Wilberforce, the key catalyst in the abolition of the slave trade. In his “Abolition Speech” to Parliament on May 12, 1789, he expressed the human imperative that took hold of him and made his commitment to abolition absolute:

“How then can the House refuse its belief to the multiplied testimonies … of the savage treatment of the negroes in the middle passage? Nay, indeed, what need is there of any evidence? The number of deaths speaks for itself, and makes all such enquiry superfluous. As soon as ever I had arrived thus far in my investigation of the slave trade, I confess to you sir, so enormous so dreadful, so irremediable did its wickedness appear that my own mind was completely made up for the abolition. A trade founded in iniquity, and carried on as this was, must be abolished … let the consequences be what they would, I from this time determined that I would never rest till I had effected its abolition.”

Three years later, on February 18, 1796, he made another motion for abolition in Parliament. Weary colleagues called for “suspending the question” until the end of the year. Wilberforce responded,

“There is something not a little provoking in the dry, calm way in which gentlemen are apt to speak of the sufferings of others. The question suspended! Is the desolation of wretched Africa suspended? Are all the complicated miseries of this atrocious trade – is the work of death suspended? No sir, I will not delay this motion, and I will call upon the House not to insult the forbearance of Heaven by delaying this tardy act of justice!”(Metaxas, p. 163)

Notice what motivates him. The humanity of the victims connects with his humanity. He did not observe the oppression from a distance, or keep himself emotionally detached from the plight of the slaves. He was not afraid to be moved — and that is the only way he moved others.

Yet so many try “not get too worked up” about the abortion tragedy. But that is precisely the wrong approach. We will end abortion only when enough of us connect, both mentally and emotionally, with the human tragedy it represents, and then drink deeply of that human imperative, and become inebriated with that holy impatience.

At the eleventh hour Monday, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo extended his temporary restraining that prevented doctors from Children’s Hospital Oakland from taking 13-year-old Jahi McMath off a ventilator. Judge Grillo’s original order was set to expire at 5:00 pm west coast time.

Jahi has been diagnosed by physicians, including Dr. Paul Fisher, a court-appointed pediatric neurologist from Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, as brain-dead. Her family challenges the diagnosis, saying Jahi responds to her mother’s voice. They want the teenager transferred to a facility in New York that they say is willing to accept her for long-term care.

On a separate track, a state appeals court also issued a 24-hour stay yesterday, “declaring that Jahi must remain on the ventilator through 5 p.m. Tuesday, until the court can hear the family’s case,” the Oakland Tribune reported. (CNN reported this morning that the family is also “filing a new complaint in federal court requesting a temporary restraining order and an injunction to prevent the hospital from disconnecting Jahi from life support.”)

Last Chance: “Abortion Stops a Beating Heart.”

Last chance: “Abortion Stops a Beating Heart.”

abortionstops5“Debbie” was going to have an abortion. In fact, she was literally in her car on her way to the abortion facility that was going to kill her baby.

The “counselors” there hadn’t told her the full truth about her baby’s development. They rarely do.

So many women choose abortion simply because they don’t know the truth about the humanity of their little babies. But sometimes, those little babies are given one last chance.

This was one of those days.

Years earlier, National Right to Life wanted to know what messages could most impact women considering an abortion – what would make them see that their baby was not a “glob of tissue” or “mass of cells” as the abortion “counselors” so often told them. So we conducted focus groups and polls and found a number of themes that seemed to really touch hearts and express how deeply human these precious little babies are.

Then we converted those themes to media ads, to print materials, to messages on our website. And on this day, Debbie saw one of those themes.

As “Debbie” headed to the clinic where her baby was scheduled to die, she saw something on the bumper of the car in front of her. It was National Right to Life’s red and white bumper sticker that told a simple, but powerful truth:

“Abortion Stops a Beating Heart.”

That’s all Debbie needed to know. Her baby had a heartbeat. Her baby wasn’t simply a “mass of cells,” but a little human being whose heart was already providing life-giving oxygen and nourishment, just as it does for her. She realized she couldn’t abort her baby!

She turned around and went home. Her baby lived!
