What does it mean to be pro-life?

By Paul Stark

standforlife5Every human being matters, and we ought to act accordingly

The media often use the label “anti-abortion” to describe pro-life advocates. It’s true that we oppose abortion—and infanticide, euthanasia and embryo-destructive research. But we are only against those things because we are for something else.

What we are for

What are we for? We are for the proposition that human life is good, that it is worth living, that it deserves respect and protection. We are for the proposition that every human being has an equal worth and dignity—that every human being has a right to live.

The pro-life position rejects all attempts to divide humanity into those who have rights and those who don’t. Our society now recognizes that past discrimination on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity and social status was deeply unjust. We recognize that the worth of a human being does not depend on such characteristics.

Nor, however, does the worth of a human being depend on age, size, ability, dependency, stage of development or the desires and decisions of others. The big are not more valuable than the small. The strong do not have more rights than the weak. The independent do not matter more than the vulnerable and needy.

No, we have value and a right to life simply because we are human—not because of what we can do, but because of what (the kind of being) we are. That’s why everyone matters. Everyone counts.

What we are against

It is because we support equal human dignity that we oppose the intentional killing of innocent human beings. And that means we oppose abortion, infanticide, euthanasia and embryo-destructive research.

Pro-lifers oppose abortion because it takes the life of a human being before he or she is born. The scientific facts of embryology and developmental biology make clear that the unborn (the human embryo or fetus) is a distinct and living human organism, a full-fledged (though immature) member of the species Homo sapiens. Each of us was once an embryo and a fetus, just as we were once infants, toddlers and adolescents.

And all human beings, at all stages, have a right to life, whether or not they are “wanted” or “convenient.”

We oppose euthanasia and assisted suicide because killing is never the answer to the difficulties of life. All human beings should receive our compassion and care, irrespective of disease, disability or perceived “quality of life.”

We oppose embryonic stem cell research (but not adult or non-embryonic stem cell research) and human cloning because they require the destruction of human embryos. Human embryos are human beings in the embryonic phase of life. And all human beings, regardless of appearance or location (e.g., a petri dish), ought to be treated with respect and not as mere raw material to use for the hypothetical benefit of others.

Living our conviction

But being pro-life is about more than just holding an ethical position. To be truly pro-life means to live and act accordingly.

It means treating other people with dignity and respect—even those with whom we disagree. It means helping pregnant women in need and those who suffer from illness or disability.

Pro-Abortion Advocates Have Vulnerable Women Thinking That Becoming Pregnant Is A PROBLEM That Should Be Solved By Taking The Life Of The Unborn Child!!!

January 2, 2014
Dear Friend,

When you witness outside of an abortion facility or Planned Parenthood location, you get a wide variety of responses when trying to persuade women not to kill their unborn child. The one response that really upsets me more than others is when a girl tells me that she “can’t afford to have this baby (yes…she says ‘baby’!)”, and “are you going to feed this baby and pay for it after I have it?”

Pro-life advocates are often portrayed as carrying about children only while they are in the womb, and that is just a downright lie! We work closely with crisis pregnancy centers and other resources to help children both before and after they are born.   No one ever said it was going to be easy.   But I think the reason I am so bothered when I’m told by someone that they can’t have a child (AFTER the child is conceived) for economic reasons is that they should have thought about that BEFORE the child was created! I don’t mean to downplay anyone’s circumstances, or how or why a life was conceived. What I DO want to focus on is the lack of responsibility that seems to be pervasive in our society. There is no genie that appears to grant three wishes, no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and no magic tricks that automatically changes our circumstances. Why would anyone expect that taking care of a child they created is someone else’s responsibility?! Now, before you get angry and think I don’t care or want to help anyone, you’re wrong.   I DO think we should help as much as we can. What I DON’T like is that pro-abortion advocates have vulnerable women thinking that becoming pregnant is a PROBLEM that should be solved by taking the life of the unborn child for whatever reason!!! These children are not unwanted: I want them, God wants them, and there are countless numbers of families that want them and would adopt them in a heartbeat!

I happen to be part of a loving and caring extended family that over the years helped my parents with me and my brothers and sisters when needed, helped me with my children when needed, and God willing, will continue to be support for my grandchildren, their children and beyond. I also belong to a wonderful church and have a fantastic network of friends.   I know that not everyone is this fortunate.   I truly believe that we should be of support beyond our own families—personally if we can—or be of support to organizations like crisis pregnancy centers and more. My beef is with the abortion industry, so called women’s rights advocates and more who have made a pregnancy into a problem rather than a gift, and who demean the sanctity of life in general and brings it to the point where I am standing outside of legal termination of life facility and a girl tells me that she is killing her child because of money.   This is reality…..and this is wrong.

Proverbs 22:6 says: “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”  We need as a society to change the reality of what our children are learning. We need to rely more on God and our faith, and return to the principles and morals on which this country was founded. That DOESN’T mean we are “shoving our religion down someone’s throat” as pro-abortion advocates say. It means that science has proven that life begins at conception, and that the unborn child is a uniquely separate human being which happens to depend on his or her mother for survival. It means that our founding documents say that we are ALL entitled to life, and it should not be arbitrarily terminated before birth no matter what the reason. It’s not rocket science….it’s life!

Our work goes on….

Food For Thought

In 2012, a panel of physicians meeting in Ireland, a country with one of the world’s lowest rates of maternal mortality, concluded:  “We affirm that direct abortion–the purposeful destruction of the unborn child–is not medically necessary to save the life of a woman.”  They further stated: “The prohibition of abortion does not affect, in any way, the availability of optimal care to pregnant women.”

Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the United States Senate.

From the Desk of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham

Pro-life Friend:

We need your immediate help.

In November, I introduced the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the United States Senate.

This historic legislation – already passed by the House of Representatives last summer – protects unborn children at 20 weeks based on their ability to feel pain.

Now that the bill has been introduced, we need to gather as many co-sponsors as possible in order to force Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to bring it up for a vote.

The Susan B. Anthony List is a leading advocate for the unborn in the halls of Congress, and they’re currently planning a massive effort to mobilize millions of pro-life advocates from around the country to fight for this bill.

But it won’t be easy. That’s why I am counting on you to make an immediate gift of $10, $25, $50, or even $100 or more right now to the Susan B. Anthony List.

With your help, we can make a forceful case in the U.S. Senate and across the country that late-term abortions must end now, especially in the wake of Kermit Gosnell’s House of Horrors.

I am optimistic that we can force a vote in the U.S. Senate and put every single Senator on record… but we need you standing strong with us to help get the job done.

The best way you can help right now is to make an immediate donation of any size to my friends at the Susan B. Anthony List.  They are doing an incredible job.

This is a groundbreaking time for the pro-life movement. We are winning this fight and momentum continues to build.

But remember, we’ll have Senate Democrats and their friends at Planned Parenthood and other pro-choice groups trying to stop us every step of the way.  Emily’s List, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and others have already aggressively attacked our efforts.

That’s why we need an avalanche of grassroots support from pro-lifers across America right now.

So please, make an immediate donation to the SBA List as we fight together to protect unborn children.

I look forward to keeping you updated on our progress.

May God continue to bless these efforts to protect unborn children and their mothers from the violence of abortion.

Sincerely,

Lindsey Graham
United States Senator

PS: I am working alongside the SBA List as we work to protect pain-capable children from the hands of late-term abortionists. Please send the biggest donation you can afford right now to the SBA List so we can force a vote in the United States Senate.

New poll: More Americans Support Mandatory Waiting Periods Before Abortion

New poll: More Americans support mandatory waiting periods before abortion

BY DUSTIN SIGGINS

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 7, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new poll shows an increasing number of Americans support laws requiring a mandatory waiting period before a woman can have an abortion.

According to the Republican-leaning pollster Rasmussen, 49 percent of Americans support waiting periods for women to have abortions. Thirty-nine percent oppose a waiting period, and 11 percent are uncertain. Support for a waiting period is up by six percent since October 2013, when opposition and support were tied at 43 percent

Pro-life leaders praised the results of the poll.

“Protecting the lives and health of mothers and their unborn children from abortion industry abuses is a national trend as state office holders roll back the deadly impact of Roe v. Wade,” Americans United for Life President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest told LifeSiteNews.com. “Support for waiting periods is a common-sense approach to a life-changing procedure that cannot be reversed and should not be pushed on vulnerable women.”

Susan B. Anthony List spokeswoman Mallory Quigley told LifeSiteNews.com that “an increasing number of Americans support common ground measures” such as mandated waiting periods. Mallory said such laws ensure “women have ample time to weigh all the facts before [getting an] abortion.”

In 2013, 27 states required a waiting period, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Only two states, South Dakota and Utah, require a waiting period of 72 hours. All of the rest have shorter time periods, though many require in-person counseling before having the abortion – something South Dakota does not mandate.

Obama Admin. Doubles Down, Demands Nuns Violate Their Conscience On Abortion-Inducing Drugs

Obama admin. doubles down, demands nuns violate their conscience on abortion-inducing drugs

Little Sisters of the Poor

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 7, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In a reply filed with the U.S. Supreme Court, the Obama administration is arguing that a group of nuns that has objected to the HHS birth control and abortifacient mandate has no grounds to challenge the mandate since they are already exempt from it as a religious organization.

However, lawyers for the nuns have pointed out that in order to claim their exemption, the administration is requiring the nuns to sign a “permission slip” that would allow their insurance company to offer coverage of contraception, abortion-inducing drugs, and sterilization over the nuns’ objections.

The Sisters argue that participating in the process in any way would make them party to mortal sin. Even the fact that the government would pay the insurer for the coverage, and so costs would not fall on the Sisters, fails to address this concern, they say.

On Friday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) responded to Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s injunction protecting the Little Sisters of the Poor and other religious organizations from the HHS mandate. According to its response, the Little Sisters of the Poor have “no legal basis to challenge the self-certification requirement or to complain that it involves them in the process of providing contraceptive coverage.”

The DOJ also cited lower court decisions against the Little Sisters, saying that “both of the lower courts recognized this case involves a church plan that is exempt from regulation.” The Obama administration stated that the Sisters need only sign paperwork opting out of the mandate and that while this would then open up their insurance company to covering what the Sisters believe are sinful measure, the Sisters themselves would not be paying for anything they object to.

The mandate, which went into effect in January 2012 and has gone through several revisions, has caused a backlash among religiously affiliated non-profits and some business owners, because they say the government is forcing them to violate their beliefs against abortifacients and contraception.

In all, 91 lawsuits have been filed by religious and non-religious organizations.

In a public statement, Becket Fund for Religious Liberty Senior Counsel and Lead Counsel for Little Sisters Mark Rienzi decried the administration’s defense of the mandate.

“The government demands that the Little Sisters of the Poor sign a permission slip for drugs and contraceptives, or pay…millions in fines,” he said.

“The government now asks the Supreme Court to believe that the very thing it is forcing the nuns to do—signing the permission slip—is a meaningless act,” Rienzi continued. “But why on earth would the government be fighting the Little Sisters all the way to the Supreme Court if it did not think its own form had any effect?”

The Supreme Court is hearing two challenges to the mandate in March from for-profit organizations. The government’s response to the injunction gives Sotomayor and the Supreme Court the ability to keep the injunction in place until the cases are decided, or suspend it until the case is decided.

Man Gives Up Everything, Walks Across U.S. Making Reparation For Sins Of Abortion, Family Breakdown

Man gives up everything, walks across U.S. making reparation for sins of abortion, family breakdown

BY PETER BAKLINSKI

  • Tue Jan 07, 2014 18:26 EST

Mark Byerly left a successful job as a manager of a private Spanish restaurant, then he gave away, sold, or threw out everything he owned, except for what he needed for his journey. And then he began walking.

TEXAS, January 7, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – It can be a temptation living in these dark times to simply throw up one’s hands in despair as the world descends from one blackness into another. But accepting defeat has never been an option for Mark Byerly.

Instead of standing idly by witnessing western civilization become more and more corroded through abortion, the breakdown of marriage and family, and the loss of a sense of sin, the 49-year-old decided on a radical course of action: He would embark on a journey across America on foot, praying for the spiritual needs of his countrymen.

“Ultimately, I just couldn’t stand around and watch this happen anymore,” Byerly told LifeSiteNews.com by phone during his brief stop in Odessa, Texas for Christmas.

Byerly’s journey would be a pilgrimage of penance, prayer, and sacrifice to make amends for his own crimes and the crimes of others committed against God and neighbor.

The word “pilgrim” conjures up images of someone from the Middle Ages dressed in tattered robes and traveling across Europe or Russia with a staff and a ragged bundle slung across his back. While Byerly is a modern pilgrim with modern tools, such as an iPad for communicating and for tracing out his route, he is driven by that same mysterious hunger felt by pilgrims of all ages, a hunger for God and for his Kingdom to come.

Byerly set out on his pilgrimage from his hometown of Newark, Delaware on July 25, 2013. Prior to this he had disentangled himself of his worldly responsibilities. He left a successful job as a manager of a private Spanish restaurant. Then he gave away, sold, or threw out everything he owned, except for what he needed for his journey.

Byerly will visit 150 Catholic shrines on his roughly 3,000 mile trek across the continent to California, one holy place for each “Hail Mary” prayer of the 15 traditional decades of the Rosary.

Byerly has a set of what he calls pilgrim “rules” that he follows religiously.

“I do not take busses, trains, or planes. I do not hitchhike or directly request rides from anyone, but I can accept rides from those who generously and freely offer them,” he said.

“I have no funds of my own but rely solely on God’s providential help through alms. I never ask people for money, but will accept gifts of money freely offered. I can beg for food, water, and lodging only. I have a tent — and make as much use of it as possible — but many good souls have opened their homes to me.”

“While walking I pray—for the people I pass by, for the dioceses and their bishops and priests, for the towns and cities that I go through, for all the good souls that have helped me along my way, for the Catholic Church, for our Pope.”

As he walks Mark prays that God will raise up an army of men and women of the “most dramatic sanctity that our world has yet seen” who will courageously confront the prevailing evils of the culture, even to the point of martyrdom.

“Our world, being so very ill, cannot wait any longer,” he said.

Byerly said that his pilgrim prayer is directed especially towards priests and bishops who he said must become “humble and repent” if authentic renewal in the Church and world is to happen.

He says he experienced what he called a “gradual awakening” to the real state of the world after reading LifeSiteNews.com articles over a few years. He became deeply concerned by the reports about anti-life and anti-family actions that he read.

“It’s really hard to read all those things and not see that things are in a crazy down-spiral throughout the whole world morally and spiritually,” he said.

Byerly says that in a moment of epiphany it suddenly dawned on him that a massive spiritual battle was taking place, a battle between the forces of good and evil for the souls of every man, woman, and child.

“I realized that I stood in a world which, to my great dismay, despised the child and the innocent and pure, and that it despised them with sadistic violence.”

“I realized that the demons in the sky are blacking out the sun, that the enemies of Christ are strong and many, that His Kingdom is devastated, and that ‘My God! who will you send to help us?!’”

“Seeing over the last four to five years the dizzying speed with which all of the world is ingesting every known spiritual and moral disease with the apparent purpose of hateful self-annihilation, I could not stand and watch any more. The entire edifice is burning and few are shouting ‘fire’ with the necessary urgency of voice,” he said.

He decided to be that voice shouting “fire” through prayer, fasting, and walking on pilgrimage.

People passing Byerly as they drive along the highway will see a man in nondescript brown clothes wearing a backpack. They will notice a simple cross hanging from his neck. Many will write him off as a nutcase, as did one Texas police officer who offered to drive the pilgrim to the next county line.

“No disrespect, bu’ don’t’cha think it’s all kinduva lost cause? There’s jus’ too much evil’n this world,” Byerly remembers the officer saying.

He generally agrees with this kind of an assessment, but always adds: “Yes, but many individual souls can still be saved.”

Byerly knows that the fruits of his pilgrimage will largely be hidden from the eyes of the world. They will be seen by God alone. Deep down he believes that his pilgrimage will help bring God’s grace and mercy for the Church and for humanity. He hopes it will bring people a “vibrant and shimmering hope” that God has not forsaken his people.

Mark Byerly periodically blogs about his pilgrimage here.

Supreme Court Justice Issues Temporary Injunction Sought By Little Sisters Of The Poor Against Obama Mandate

NRL News Today
January 2, 2014   ObamaCare

Supreme Court Justice issues temporary injunction sought by Little Sisters of the Poor against Obama Mandate

By Dave Andrusko

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Pro-abortion President Barack Obama

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Pro-abortion President Barack Obama

Acting at the request of an order of nuns in Colorado, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a temporary injunction New Year’s Eve against enforcement of a component of ObamaCare that forces employers, including religious groups, to provide health coverage for drugs and procedures to which they have moral or religious objections. The order came hours before this provision of ObamaCare took effect.

Sotomayor’s order applies only to the nuns–the Little Sisters of the Poor which operates nursing homes for the poor around the world–and to other Roman Catholic nonprofit groups that use the same health plan, the Christian Brothers Employee Benefit Trust.

Sotomayor gave the government until 10 a.m. EST Friday to respond to her order.

The groups’ lawsuit is one of scores of lawsuits against the mandate.

“We are delighted with the ruling,” said Mark L. Rienzi, a lawyer at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, who represented the nuns in the lawsuit. “The Little Sisters are an order of Catholic nuns whose religious faith leads them to devote their lives to caring for the elderly poor. Not surprisingly, they have sincere and undisputed religious objections to complying with this Mandate,” Rienzi said.

Without the order, Rienzi said late Tuesday, the nuns would have been forced to comply with the mandate “or face large fines.”

Justice Sotomayor’s order came hours after the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, in Denver, denied the nuns’ request for a preliminary injunction. Because she is the justice who has oversight for the 10th Circuit, the motion for a stay went to Sotomayor.

“The groups want the mandate halted while the court considers a legal challenge, brought by the for-profit company Hobby Lobby, arguing that the requirement violates their religious liberties,” according to NBC News.

By contrast the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit issued an emergency stay for the Catholic-affiliated groups challenging the provision.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear two lawsuits challenging the mandate which are regulations adopted by the Department of Health and Human Services under a provision of ObamaCare.

In the Hobby Lobby case the plaintiffs prevailed in obtaining an injunction. In the second case Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp was denied an injunction.

This represented the first legal challenge to ObamaCare to reach the Supreme Court since it upheld the law’s “individual mandate” 18 months ago. Oral arguments in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. v. Sebelius are expected to be held in March with a possible ruling by late June.

Family of Jahi McMath Struggles To Find Doctor To Insert Breathing And Feeding Tubes

Family of Jahi McMath struggles to find doctor to insert breathing and feeding tubes

By Dave Andrusko

Nailah Winkfield, mother of Jahi McMath

Jahi McMath remains on a ventilator today as her family continues its frantic struggle to find a doctor who will insert feeding and breath tubes into the 13-year-old who has been diagnosed as brain-dead.

One part of the complex network of requirements has been met, according to the Oakland Tribune and other media outlets: a facility will accept her as a patient.

The facility director of New Beginnings Community Center in Medford, N.Y., “said [Jahi] would be cared for around the clock by licensed nursing staff and licensed respiratory therapists,” according to Katie Nelson of the Tribune. “The facility would also hire a pediatrician who would accept Jahi as his patient.”

Meanwhile Fox News reports that Children’s Hospital Oakland has reversed its position on surgery to implant the tubes. On Tuesday its lawyer, Douglas Straus, wrote to Jahi’s family that the hospital would not permit the surgery to be performed on its premises.

“Performing medical procedures on the body of a deceased human being is simply not something Children’s Hospital can do or ask its staff to assist in doing,” he said.

On Monday a hospital spokesman had said “the hospital would allow a doctor retained by the family to insert a feeding tube and to replace the oral ventilator keeping Jahi’s heart beating with a tracheal tube — surgical procedures that would stabilize Jahi if she is moved to a facility willing to keep caring for her,” according to Fox News.

On Tuesday, a state appeals court refused to order the hospital to insert the tubes, “saying the issue has to go first to the lower court judge who has ordered the hospital to keep the girl on a ventilator until Jan. 7 pending the family’s appeal,” Fox reported. “The 1st District Court of Appeal said it would consider the issue at a later date, if necessary.”

The following day Hospital spokesman Sam Singer said that three separate courts have now denied requests to have someone implement the tracheotomy line to help Jahi breathe and a gastric tube to provide nutrition.

Family attorney Chris Dolan disagreed, noting that the courts have only said they would not order Children’s Hospital Oakland to perform the surgeries.

“This is no trick; this is life and death,” Dolan said in a statement yesterday. “Justice is no hoax, and constitutional rights are not a game.”
