A Lesson from “Charlotte’s Web”

By Micaiah Bilger, Education Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

charlotteswebA few Sundays ago, when I was visiting my family, my little sister pulled out a paperback copy of “Charlotte’s Web” and asked if I would read to her.

I hadn’t read the book in years – maybe not even since I was 8, the same age as my little sister. We sat down on the sofa, and I turned the pages to Chapter 1:

“Where’s Papa going with that ax?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.

“Out to the hoghouse,” replied Mrs. Arable. “Some pigs were born last night.”

“I don’t see why he needs an ax,” continued Fern, who was only eight.

“Well,” said her mother, “one of the pigs is a runt. It’s very small and weak, and it will never amount to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it.”

… Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. …

“Fern,” said Mr. Arable, “I know more about raising a litter of pigs than you do. A weakling makes trouble. Now run along!”

“But it’s unfair,” cried Fern. “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”

Mr. Arable smiled. “Certainly not,” he said, looking down at his daughter with love. “But this is different. A little girl is one thing, a little runty pig is another.”

“I see no difference,” replied Fern … “This is the most terrible case of injustice I ever heard of.”

A queer look came over John Arable’s face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.

“All right,” he said.

Fern’s words almost seem prophetic, “If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?” Today babies in the womb are killed just because they may have a disability or abnormality. Many parents are pressured toward abortion because their baby is imperfect in the world’s eyes.

Our society justifies these babies’ deaths with excuses: The baby may suffer, or the baby could be a “burden” for the family, or the baby may not live long anyway. I think the problem lies with our flawed perspective, not these children’s lives.

I was really struck by Fern’s example. She fought and pleaded for a life who many didn’t see as valuable. She gave up her time to provide the extra care and attention that that life needed.

Fern approached the situation from the simple, untainted logic of a child. She didn’t think twice. She didn’t question whether a life was worth saving, because it never occurred to her to question the value of a life at all. She understood that every life deserves protection, no matter how long they live or how much care they need.

I’m so glad “Charlotte’s Web” is still a classic on children’s bookshelves. We need more heroines like Fern.

The Devastating Reality of Post Abortion Stress Syndrome

The devastating reality of Post Abortion Stress Syndrome

 By Christina Martin

woman-thought2She sat across from me, tears streaming down her face. The subject of abortion came up and this woman struggled to discuss it. ‘Emotionally damaging’ was the phrase she used to describe the procedure.

She thought about her child. She wondered how old he or she may be. As she reflected on her past she wrestled with feelings of regret. She admitted to choosing abortion without knowing all of the facts. She felt rushed into the decision, wishing now that she would have gathered more information before she decided.

This woman’s story is all too common. In the decade I’ve been involved in the pro-life movement I’ve heard similar tales. I met a woman who was so affected by her abortion that she couldn’t talk about it for 20 years.

Another lady shared a chilling story of using the RU-486 pill and the absolute horror she faced witnessing her unborn baby pass. I remember the African-American woman who pulled me aside and whispered her confession. The pain of her choice etched upon her face.

Susanne Babbel is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has a P.H.D in Psychology. She is also a psychotherapist with an emphasis on trauma and depression. In an article for ‘Psychology Today’ titled, ‘Post Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS) – Does It Exist?’ she writes: ‘No matter your philosophical, religious, or political views on abortion, the fact of the matter is, the actual experience can affect women not only on a personal level but can potentially have psychological repercussions.’

Babbel refers to this as Post Abortion Stress Syndrome. (PASS) is based on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD). It’s the name given to the psychological aftereffects of abortion. Babbel notes that the disorder is real, although the term has not been recognized by the American Psychological Association.

Sadly those who support abortion often refuse to acknowledge that long term negative effects that it can bring to many women. The National Abortion Federation calls (PASS) a ‘myth‘ and the popular liberal Ms. Magazine says it’s a ‘bogus affliction invented by the religious right’.

However Babbel asserts “any event that causes trauma can indeed result in PTSD, and abortion is no exception.” Babbel is not declaring this because she’s a pro-life therapist. She further states, ‘Believing that PASS exists does not mean that one does not believe in a woman’s right to choose; it simply means that one believes in supportive and constructive counseling around the trauma symptoms’. Babbel lists ‘guilt, anxiety, numbness, depression, flashbacks, and suicidal thoughts as symptoms of PASS.

Babbel makes no claim that these symptoms will follow after every abortion. She writes: While abortion can induce post-traumatic stress in some, others will suffer no repercussions at all. I can understand that statement.

I personally believe there is an undeniable, emotional, physical, and even spiritual connection between a mother and a child. However, I’ve met a number of post-abortive women who have a range of experiences. I don’t oppose abortion solely because I believe it will cause trauma to a woman’s soul. I oppose abortion because it’s morally wrong to destroy the life of a fetus. Some women will make that destructive decision with little sorrow, regret, or negative emotional consequences.

We live in a society that views abortion as a private decision which women need not regret. Therefore women with seemingly ‘positive’ abortion experiences are often encouraged to share them with pride. However women with negative experiences find themselves in a difficult place. They suffer from the pain of their abortion, all the while living in a society that tells them that pain isn’t real or necessary.

Thankfully organizations are here for that very reason. They are safe places for women who need healing after their abortion. If you or anyone you know has suffered emotional or physical pain from an abortion, there is help available to you. You are not alone. You don’t have to carry the secret or live in shame. Research Shows Unborn Babies Anticipate Touch in the Womb

Research Shows Unborn Babies Anticipate Touch in the Womb

International

An article in the British periodical The Daily Mail discusses an article in The Journal Developmental Psychobiology which describes the cognitive development of unborn babies. Based on conclusions reached by researchers from Durham and Lancaster Universities in the U.K.

“For the first time, psychologists discovered that foetuses were able to predict, rather than react to, their own hand movements towards their mouths as they entered the later stages of gestation compared to earlier in a pregnancy….

ultrasound4d44Psychologist Dr Nadja Reissland explained: ‘Increased touching of the lower part of the face and mouth in foetuses could be an indicator of brain development necessary for healthy development, including preparedness for social interaction, self-soothing and feeding.’

The discovery comes after a previous study found babies make faces in the womb, potentially as practice before coming in to the world.

Dr Reissland and a team of researchers from Lancaster University and Durham University, which led the study, used ‘4D’ ultrasound scans – 3D scans that can be seen in real time – to image eight girls and seven boys once a month between the 24th and 36th week of pregnancy.

Both boys and girls showed the same rate of development during the study.

In the earlier stage of gestation they saw babies touch the upper part and sides of their heads, although later on they began to touch the the lower, more sensitive, part of their faces and mouths.

By the 36th week the majority of fetuses were seen opening their mouths before they touched them, which scientists say is a sign that they were anticipating touch…..

Exposing the Hypocrisy of Opposing the Death Penalty But Supporting Abortion in 10 Seconds

Exposing the Hypocrisy of Opposing the Death Penalty But Supporting Abortion in 10 Seconds

by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 8/4/14 9:32 AM<!––><!––>

Opinion

One of the biggest hypocrisies in the abortion debate are those abortion defenders who oppose the death penalty because it involves killing a human being but who steadfastly support legal abortion, which also involves killing human beings.

Here is a cartoon that exposes that hypocrisy in 10 seconds.

deathpenalty2

Writing at LifeNews, Calvin Freiburger has talked about this hypocrisy.

There’s a funny thing about most pro-abortion criticisms of pro-lifers: usually they reveal more about the challenger than the challenged.

Take, for example, the old canard about pro-lifers supporting the death penalty. Upon positing that unborn babies don’t deserve to be killed, we are frequently condemned as hypocrites for (allegedly) turning a blind eye to the state-sanctioned killing of another group of people.

Putting aside the minor detail that they often don’t bother to check whether the pro-lifer in question actually does support capital punishment, the comparison fails every major substantive comparison, other than both acts involving killing. To equate the purposes or the characteristics of either is like equating a Radio Flyer with the Mars rover.

Abortion kills an innocent child; capital punishment kills someone convicted of an unthinkable crime. Abortion can be done for virtually any reason; capital punishment is, well, punishment, meant to deter the worst offenses. Abortion is left entirely to the choice of one woman, with no representation of any kind for the baby’s interests (even non-binding informational requirements are too much to ask of the average abortion defender); capital punishment is carried out only after an investigation, a trial with a constitutionally guaranteed legal defense, conviction by a jury of one’s peers, sentencing, and a lengthy appeal process.

Abortion Has Cost the U.S. $16 Trillion in Lost Revenue, The Size of the National Debt

Abortion Has Cost the U.S. $16 Trillion in Lost Revenue, The Size of the National Debt

by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 8/4/14 10:15 AM<!––><!––>

National

Washington, DC (LiveAction) — The pro-life movement often talks of the science behind life in the womb, the fact that abortion leaves emotional, psychological and physical scars on women and the inherent beauty of every life. What we don’t often talk about, though, is money.

After all, doesn’t it seem somewhat crass to couch pro-life arguments in terms of economic benefit? The reality, though, is that abortion hasn’t impacted our society only in emotional, social, and cultural ways. It’s also impacted our society economically. And one political scientist is now claiming this very thing.

proabortion12Mark A. Olson, a former liberal community organizer turned pro-life consultant, has published research that abortion in America has cost our nation more than $16 trillion in federal revenue – or approximately the amount of our current national debt.

In a slide presentation summarizing his research, he first notes that the figure of 50 million abortions far under-represents the cumulative population loss due to abortion, which he places at a staggering 126,469,904 as of January 1, 2014.

Based on this number, Olson applies the per capita individual tax burden to the lost population number for each year, a method which he says controls for other demographic variables. His finding: as of January 1, 2014, $15,734,000,000 in federal revenue has been lost due to abortion.

A press release issued today by Olson stated, “Basic macroeconomics says that any such loss in population will result in a collapse of the necessary aggregate supply and demand to sustain long term national economic growth. The population loss due to abortion would have the same negative economic impact as any population loss due to war, epidemic, or natural disaster. “

Olson concludes that the fiscal problems our nation is facing can be solved neither by conservative nor liberal policies – but only through ending abortion on demand.

The reality is that abortion doesn’t ‘only’ kill children. It doesn’t only devastate women. It doesn’t only shock and grieve men. It doesn’t only deaden national conscience and deprave our collective culture. It does all of these, and more.

Certainly, life is sacred apart from economics – and it always will be. And truth be told, waving signs that read “Save a life, save the economy” probably won’t change many minds and hearts.

At the same time, evaluating the impact of abortion without evaluating the resulting economic losses is an incomplete study. Tragically, we know that not even one dollar of that lost $15 trillion is enough to bring back one of the precious lives lost through abortion.

But one thing we can do is make sure that not one more dollar funds the taking of innocent lives – and not one more dollar propagates the lie that abortion does no harm.

Pregnant “Today Show” host moderates fascinating segment on fetal development

Pregnant “Today Show” host moderates fascinating segment on fetal development

By Andrew Bair

Savannah Guthrie

With refreshing candor, the hosts on NBC’s Today Show discussed the amazing journey of our lives before birth. The segment highlighted developmental milestones like taste, smell, movement, sight and hearing. New studies indicating unborn children are capable of learning nursery rhymes and respond to their mother’s stress level were also discussed.

Dr. Bill Fifer, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, said, “Everything that a newborn baby does, a fetus has pretty much done already.”

Most of this information comes as little surprise to the pro-life movement. Pro-life advocates have worked for years to educate the public on the incredible facts about our lives in what Today Show host Savannah Guthrie referred to as “Hotel Uterus.” (Guthrie is pregnant and due next month.)

We know that a baby’s tiny heart is beating as early as 18 days after sperm-egg fusion. Brain waves are detectable by 6 weeks and babies can experience dream (REM) sleep by 17 weeks. Substantial medical and scientific evidence has demonstrated that unborn children are capable of feeling pain by 20 weeks, if not earlier.

The Today Show segment also highlighted a new study on the development of taste: “Researchers have found that mothers who consistently ate carrots during the end of their pregnancy had babies who enjoyed that taste more than babies whose mothers hadn’t shared the same diet.”

Based on the results of the taste study, Guthrie’s baby probably has a “real hankering for junk food and sweets,” co-host Matt Lauer joked. Guthrie responded, “Mine would be like, at 20 weeks, your baby likes Indian food with beef jerky.”

Advancements in technology have offered a greater glimpse into our earliest moments of life. At the time Roe v. Wade was decided by the Supreme Court, a central question in the abortion debate was at what point life begins.

Now, even pro-abortion bloggers like Jodi Jacobson at RH Reality Check concede that life begins at conception. Jacobson made that point in a 2012 article entitled “Life Begins At Conception. That’s Not the Point.”

The debate has now shifted to the question of when life has value and deserves protection.

Editor’s note. The segment on the Thursday edition of The Today Show, “The Secret Life of Babies: New Research about what’s learned inside the womb,” was so informative and so insightful we are running two post. (The other can be read at nrlc.cc/UOtqCr.

Health Department Cracks Down on Illegally Operating Abortion Facilities

Planned Parenthood Fined $25,000 for Health and Safety Violations

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Today, Ohio Right to Life obtained documentation of enforcement actions against three abortion facilities by the Ohio Department of Health. Among them is a $25,000 fine issued to Planned Parenthood of Bedford Heights due to severe violations of health and safety standards. Such violations include the facility’s failure to adhere to infection control policies, including exposed urine samples. Other health inspector discoveries include:
  • no experienced director of nursing on staff
  • improper storage of eight containers of human tissue
  • 3-month overdue follow-up documentation for hospitalized abortion patient with perforated uterus
  • incomplete documentation for abortion patient who was hospitalized for bleeding
  • use of expired and undocumented chemicals and equipment used on surgical suction hoses

Further enforcement actions by the health department were taken against Northeast Ohio Women’s Center, which was denied a license to practice surgical abortions due to multiple health and safety violations, including failure to properly train staff, lack of a director of nursing, and expired medications and pregnancy tests.

“We’re deeply concerned, though admittedly unsurprised, that multiple abortion facilities are jeopardizing the lives and health of women,” said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life. “The real war on women is being waged everyday in these unsafe and unsanitary abortion mills. These reports shock the conscience and reaffirm our resolve to protect life from Ohio’s abortion industry.”

This week, ODH also issued an administrative order to close the last remaining abortion facility in Toledo. Capital Care Network of Toledo (CCN) was unable to secure a transfer agreement with any Toledo-area hospital which caused health officials to begin the closure process last year. CCN attempted to enter into a transfer agreement with an out-of-state hospital at the University of Michigan. Because the hospital is located 52 miles away from CCN, the Department of Health ruled that it does not meet health and safety standards.

“Without Capital Care Network, life in Toledo will be safer for women and children” said Gonidakis. “This week, our government assured all of us that women’s health and patient safety is priority number one. It is deeply troubling that some people are advocating for this illegal operation to remain open, putting women’s lives at risk.”

Former clinic worker on how pro-choicers view women who regret their abortions

Former clinic worker on how pro-choicers view women who regret their abortions

 By Sarah Terzo

“The pro-abortion movement makes a lot of noise about respecting a woman’s heartfelt and well-considered “choice” to have an abortion—but only if she remains quietly pro-choice and regret-free afterwards. That same woman becomes a “traitor” to her gender, a mindless follower of dogma, or an object of cartoonish ridicule if she admits her abortion was a mistake and now wants to help others avoid the same pain, guilt, sadness, and remorse she—WE—experience as a result of making an irreversible error so grave as killing our children…..

“It is sadly (but tellingly) incongruous that pro-abortion supporters equate their cause for the ”right” to murder our unborn children to women’s equality, women’s rights, and caring for women when it seems obvious that women hurting after an abortion are pretty much left to fend for themselves. This is intellectual dishonesty in blind service to keeping the lucrative abortion industry in business at the expense of not only the helpless children killed, but also their customers: the pregnant mothers seeking their grisly services.

“It is shameful that the pro-abortion side mocks or ignores our pain, regret, and remorse—and refuses to warn women about these inherent psychological risks.”

Editor’s note. This appeared at Clinic Quotes. The quotes are from Jewels Green’s “Clinic Mocked Post-Abortion Women Who Are Now Pro-Life

Let”s go sled riding!

Right to Life of Northeast Ohio

Dear Friend:

No, I’m not nuts! I know it’s the middle of summer. It’s been a pretty hectic summer so far, too! In just the last two weeks alone, I met with a major Planned Parenthood supporter to try and change his mind, was the speaker at a meeting focusing on life and traditional family values, travelled to Washington DC to be part of a pro-life youth coalition summit meeting, was a guest on a national radio show while in DC, met with Ohio state legislators about support for current and future pro-life legislation, had a meeting with a local pregnancy help center to coordinate our efforts, worked with a group on plans to shore up our defense against euthanasia as it tries to slip into Ohio, and a whole lot more!!! There has been so much going on that sometimes you have to remind yourself that you need to get back to the basics, so it’s time to go for a sled ride!

I’m still not nuts! The letters S, L, E, and D are an acronym which stands for a simple way to pick apart the characteristics that abortion advocates use to say that unborn babies should not be valued as human life. You can use this simple technique to help you teach others:

Size

All of the DNA that makes us a human being deserving of the right to life is present at the moment of conception at our tiniest of sizes. This is a scientific fact, not a “religious” opinion. SIZE SIMPLY DOESN’T AFFECT VALUE.

Level of Development

A baby is less physically developed then a toddler, a toddler is less physically developed than an adult, someone with Down’s Syndrome is less developed mentally than those without it, someone with autism is less developed socially than those without it….you get the picture. Should a person’s rights exist only if they achieve a certain level of development?   If so, than many people could be legally killed AFTER birth!

E nvironment

Is the value of your human life different if you live in cold Siberia from those that live on a warm tropical island? What about if you are homeless? If you live in a mansion, is your life more valuable than if you live in a tiny apartment? Why should a mother’s womb be the only environment where human life has no value?

D ependence

Civil societies take care of the less able. We protect those who are dependent on others for survival. We do not execute them because they are “inconvenient”, like abortion does for the dependent child in the womb. Should we kill those who are dependent on life saving drugs for diabetes, high blood pressure, organ rejection, or others?  Should we execute those who are dependent on social welfare or social security?

Pro abortion advocates usually use ONE of the above situations to try and justify the killing of an unborn child, and usually always turn it away from being about the child into being about the rights of the mother to her “reproductive” health. Don’t let them do it! Go SLED riding!

     Our work goes on.

Denise Leipold

Camp Joshua Virginia: “An awesome pro-life camp”

By Colin Kearney

Editor’s note. The following essay was written by a participant in Camp Joshua Virginia 2014. Camp Joshua Virginia is sponsored by the Virginia Society for Human Life (VSHL). Colin is a rising junior.

Camp Joshua 2014

Camp Joshua 2014 was my third Camp Joshua and I can honestly say that I get more out of it every year. Not only has it provided me with another opportunity to hear amazing testimonies by equally amazing speakers, but also to connect with a group of about seventy teens who I know I can count on for support through even the hardest of ordeals as we fight together to end abortion.

When I think about Camp Joshua I don’t think of it as some random camp where I spend a weekend, eat lots of food, sit in on some classes, and do what you would do in any ordinary camp. Instead, if I were asked to describe a weekend at Camp Joshua, my reply would be something along the lines of “It’s this awesome pro-life camp that consists of and hosts the most amazing and inspiring group of people that I could ever hope to meet.” In the course of a single weekend I got to meet more people who I now call friends, bros and fellow pro-lifers then I have met anywhere else in the past year!

Then there’s the message that were fighting for, the pro-life message. To be able to fight for anything is fantastic, and to know that what you’re fighting for is the truth makes it all the more amazing. But to think that what you’re fighting for is in fact the lives of unborn, yet fully living and fully human babies, it make our fight all the more awesome and amazing! And even if you know absolutely nothing about the pro-life ministry, by the time the weekend is over you’ll have enough facts, ideas, and knowledge to go out and to make a difference and to change people minds and hearts about this issue.

More than anything else though this year’s camp brought up an essential point that we often tend to overlook; and that is that now that we have attended this awesome camp, we must now put our knowledge to use and to go out and make our mark in the pro-life movement, to end the greatest injustice that our generation has ever known. Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to most sincerely thank the Camp Joshua volunteer team, and all the speakers, for their most generous contribution of both their time and knowledge that have given us the inspiration and the knowledge that we need to go out and become pro-life leaders.
