Sad, but true: Doc. sues woman because he had sex with her…and she got pregnant

Jonathon van Maren Jonathon van Maren Follow Jonathon

Jan. 18, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) – Every once in a while, I read something that strikes me as microcosmic of how ridiculous much of our society has become. While we’ve made incredible advances in so many fields, we seem to have forgotten the basic, instinctive knowledge that humanity once possessed as our birthright.

Knowledge, for example, like the fact that sex makes babies.

Lest you should think I’m exaggerating, I could give you a half dozen examples off the top of my head of guys I’ve met that seem to have completely forgotten this fact. They’ve been so convinced by their porn and their entertainment that sex is a recreational activity that when their reproductive organs work and they end up procreating, they seem downright bewildered.

One fellow at the University of Calgary—he was in third year philosophy, I think—approached me at a pro-life display and demanded to know what he was to do if he got a girl pregnant “by accident.”

By accident? Did you trip and fall or something? If you engage in sexual intercourse, which often leads to reproduction, you cannot claim to be confused or surprised when it works like it’s supposed to.

Another university student informed me that he had gotten his girlfriend pregnant by accident. “I don’t know how that happened!” he whined. Really? Are you sure you don’t know how that happened? Because I wasn’t even there and I can tell you how it happened.

This brings me to a truly cringe-inducing story published this weekend in the Toronto Star, titled Doctor sues mother of his child for emotional damages. Given the headline, you might assume that the mother of his child had somehow been negligent or abusive to said child. But nope.

From the Star:

When a man and a woman of a certain age have unprotected sex, there is always the possibility a baby will be made.

Such are the facts of life with which, one would assume, a doctor is familiar.

And yet a 42-year-old Toronto physician recently tried to sue a woman with whom he’d had a casual sexual relationship for more than $4 million in damages, claiming “non-pathological emotional harm of an unplanned parenthood.”

Did you get that? This fellow—over forty, and a medical professional—is claiming that some woman he was sleeping with has caused him emotional harm because the act of him sleeping with her caused her to get pregnant.

The petulant and promiscuous papa was angry because the woman he was casually having sex with said she was on the pill, and, whether she was or she wasn’t, she ended up getting pregnant. He, like a good modern-day gentleman, assumed the woman he was extracting fleeting pleasure from had turned her reproductive system into a chemical playground to ensure that they could continue to have casual coitus free of any consequences.

But as the Star reported:

But then DD got pregnant, and PP wasn’t pleased, so he sued her.

Superior Court Justice Paul Perell threw out PP’s statement of claim last week, without permitting him the opportunity to amend it, finding there was no legal basis for his lawsuit.

“The case is certainly precedent-setting because no one has ever tried to do this before,” said DD’s lawyer, Morris Cooper, who characterized PP’s argument as “really a claim for wrongful pregnancy and birth.”

DD, a 37-year-old medical practitioner who is now the mother of a healthy 10-month-old child, is pleased with the decision, her lawyer said.

I suppose that’s a silver lining, if such a thing is to be found in such a pathetic tale. But considering judges have a bad habit these days of awarding damages in “wrongful birth” lawsuits and all sorts of other grotesque miscarriages of justice, relief is rational. The judge even sealed the case and hid the identities of those in the case, for fear that one day the baby in question might grow up, find the court records, and realize that he was the occasion for the lawsuit. And that further, if his father had finished sulking about his fertility and decided to show up once in a while at that point, the son would be exposed to the fact that this guy was, in fact, a colossal jackass.

After all, this “father” (“sperm donor” seems more accurate) had the guts to sue for this reason:

“To use the language of the statement of claim, PP was emotionally harmed because he was deprived of the choice of falling in love, marrying, enjoying married life and, when he and his wife thought ‘the time was right,’ having a baby,” the judge wrote in his 18-page ruling.”

Yeah, you read that right. Read it and weep. The gaping canyon between reality and this guy’s sense of entitlement is unfathomable. Biological reality, set in motion by his actions, had trumped the Walt Disney happy ending he was apparently yearning for. Of course, if he’d wanted that to be the case, perhaps he should have been looking for a long-term, serious relationship rather than tramping off to bed with, as he put it later, “some random girl.”

He asked her to get an abortion, of course. She said no. So he sued:

“DD committed an independently actionable wrong through misconduct that represents a marked departure from ordinary standards of decent behaviour. Her conduct was sufficiently malicious, high-handed and highly reprehensible such that it offends the court’s sense of decency.”

He therefore said he should be entitled to punitive damages “to achieve the objectives of punishment, deterrence and denunciation.”

Yes, indeed. How dare this woman’s reproductive system function in such a way that engaging in intercourse resulted in pregnancy—and how dare she not hire some feticide technician to suction that human being into shreds before he was old enough to bother his father with demands for attention and acknowledgement.

Ladies and gentleman, a lovely example of the post-modern man.

7 Reasons You Should Attend (At Least One) March for Life

7 reasons you should attend (at least one) March for Life

January 13, 2016 (Bound4Life) — Every January, I usually see the same faces coming to the local and national Marches for Life happening across our country. I long to see more people I don’t know participate, even people to whom I live next door. There may be a myriad of reasons why not everyone comes.

You may think you don’t want to attend because that isn’t your thing—you are involved in other ministries and the pro-life stand is great, but not your battle. Or you may not come because you don’t think anything is wrong with abortion. You may not come because you aren’t a Christian and you leave that up to the Christians.

But what if? What if you came just to see what it was like to attend? What if you came just to see what the people were like? Here are 7 reasons I think everyone should experience the March for Life, whether in Washington, DC or other locations nationwide.

1. Come and see for yourself

Image

I don’t know about you, but I tire from just hearing about things. There are rumors and so much confusion that media and culture puts on the pro-life movement. The best way to know about something is to experience it.

You should come once and for all, seeing for yourself what it’s like to be at a pro-life gathering. Come and meet the people and ask them why they are there. Their stories and their hearts just might warm yours.

2. Open your eyes

Most people agree about animal rights or laws that ensure basic land conservation and protection. But somehow, not everyone agrees about the rights of the baby in the womb.

If you haven’t heard in person why a pro-life advocate believes the right to be born is the most sacred right of all (and I mean really listened with eyes wide open), then you should. Open your eyes to seeing this perspective for the very first time. Speakers at pro-life gatherings and marches explain in their own personal stories why every human life—before or after birth—is irreplaceable.

3. Act on compassion

Your attending can be an act of compassion. You may not think of it that way, but it is. Attending a pro-life gathering is seen as an act of compassion for those that are defenseless against their choice to live.

You are gathering on their behalf and Heaven sees you there. You are having compassion for life and taking an action step of being there to participate and listen about the next steps to help the unborn.

4. Speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves

Image

You have a life and you have a voice. But there are those who cannot be heard yet. We carry authority to speak up for the ones who can’t speak.

A lot of people are afraid to take a side on any cause—not wanting to offend or seem radical. Is it so radical to stand up for a defenseless baby? Is it so radical to adopt? Is it so radical to be a foster parent? Is it so radical to pray for Life?

The world will say “That’s a personal matter; it’s up to the mom or dad.” And it is personal; it’s personal to that tiny human who has no voice or say-so for their own life. Our job is to make sure the world knows their lives do matter—that we defend their cause, the cause of the defenseless.

5. Learn something new

I’ve been praying for Life since I was 7 years old. I’ve been to countless gatherings, marches and conferences in my life. But after each one, I come away learning something new, something fresh that inspires me.

Who doesn’t want to be inspired? I always want to push myself to see things better, to listen more and take in the stories. I hear stories of abortion survivors and I’m in awe that they lived. I’m in awe of the passion and voice they bring to the world. I hear personal accounts of moms and dads who aborted their babies and I grieve with them as they cry retelling their journey.

I hear stories about families who changed their minds and now they can’t imagine their life without their child. Every story is different in its own situation—but I learn. I learn from their stories and I walk away different every single time.

6. Learn to pray

In my experience, I’ve learned how to really let go of distractions, let go of the world around me and talk to Jesus with the most humility when I am praying for life. When life and death are on the line, and God says you have a say so in it—you learn to get on your knees and pray with everything in your body.

At a March for Life when you are hearing the speakers and their firsthand accounts, your response flows most genuinely out of prayer. I seriously credit the growth of my prayer life to the times I was praying for innocent life before God. The greatest part of the March for Life is when we silently march and pray around the city. There is a presence of peace and of hope that comes as you pray.

7. Be a difference maker

Every morning, my mom and dad would drop us off at school and say this phrase to my sisters and me: “Be a difference maker.” And now, I say it to our foster son each time I drop him off. I want to empower everyone I know that they, too, are a difference maker.

You can make a difference for good every single day if you want to—it’s the doing that makes it true. So I ask you, what more of a difference can you make than saving a life? Today, 125,000 babies worldwide will die in an abortion. That means that in a single year, the world count of babies dying from abortion is 40-50 million abortions. Come to a pro-life march and learn how you can be a part of making that number smaller.

Click “like” if you are PRO-LIFE!

There are so many first steps you can take for the ending of these innocent deaths. Let gathering with people who’ve experienced it and their stories—beautiful and heartbreaking—be your first experience toward making a difference for life.

John Maxwell says, “Success is all about me, but significance is about other people. Valuing people, believing in people, and unconditionally loving them is the key to significance.”

Want to lead a life of significance? Be a difference maker in other people’s lives. I ask you to think of the people most at risk: the baby in the womb. Be a difference maker for them, their children and their children’s children.

Fr. Pavone: Church Can’t be Afraid to Denounce a Political Party that Supports Killing Unborn Babies

                               Opinion,

Fr. Pavone: Church can’t be afraid to denounce a political party that supports killing unborn babies

Katie Yoder

January 8, 2016 (NewsBusters) — Churches must not be afraid to speak out against abortion in the 2016 election, according to one prominent pro-life group.

On Wednesday, Priests for Life hosted a press conference on abortion in light of the upcoming 2016 elections at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The event centered on the question “How political can the Catholic Church be?” under its tax-exempt status and highlighted that “restrictions on political activity by churches are misunderstood” — even by the media.

Priests for Life National Director Fr. Frank Pavone opened the press conference by stressing Church obligation during the election season.

“This is not about the Church becoming a political machine,” he said. “This is about the Church becoming more the Church.”

But instead, many churches have been undergoing a “massive self-censorship” to avoid losing their tax exemptions.

During elections, Catholic institutions and Christian entities send out instructions and memos, he said, “somehow telling us that we cannot really participate in the election process by doing, for example, clear teaching and preaching that the people of God have to elect public servants who know the difference between serving the public and killing the public.”

According to Fr. Pavone, churches too frequently veer away from teaching Catholic doctrine due to the Johnson amendment, which forbids tax-exempt organizations from intervening “directly or indirectly” in political campaigns.

He deemed the amendment a “law on the books which is being vastly misunderstood, misrepresented.”

“Whether it’s by the fact that we simply do not understand this particular law or whether it’s by the fact that we are using the taxman as an excuse for our own fears and hesitations,” he said, “we have not gotten in our institutional churches a proper understanding of what we really are allowed to do and what we aren’t allowed to do.”

Image

But the vague rules directly influence diocese memos, said Fr. Pavone, like one, which read, “Do not even appear to endorse or oppose particular candidates for public office or political parties.”

Fr. Pavone deemed that mandate impossible.

“I ask you, brothers and sisters, how can anyone carry out that particular piece of advice?” he pressed. “How can you not even appear to favor or oppose a candidate who is in favor of child-killing throughout pregnancy when you represent a church that says no abortion is never morally permitted and that the law has to protect children from the beginning of their lives?”

Fr. Pavone stressed that the Church really is non-partisan in messaging.

Click “like” if you are PRO-LIFE!

“Whatever my message today seems to favor or oppose when it comes to political parties or candidates, what if tomorrow those parties and candidates swapped their positions on abortion?” he challenged.

“Nothing changes,” he confirmed.

MRC Culture Exclusive Interview

Following the event, MRC Culture asked Fr. Pavone if he saw a pro-life president in the near future.

“I am very confident that a lot of pro-life candidates are going to be elected in 2016,” he said, “and the reason for that confidence is that the American people are learning much more about what abortion is.”

He also expressed confidence that the Priests for Life’s new initiative to encourage churches to speak out was “very much in line with the spirit of Pope Francis.”

“The pope has made statements about the fact that we shouldn’t be afraid to ‘mess things up,’” Fr. Pavone said. “In other words, don’t feel constrained by the limitations that are imposed just by an institution.”

While the pope takes a staunch pro-life stance in line with Church doctrine, he called the Church “obsessed” with certain doctrines, such as abortion, in 2013.

“This is what the pope means when he expresses concern,” Fr. Pavone told MRC Culture. “The Church is not defined by one or another particular issue.”

The Church, he continued, is defined by Jesus. And it’s in Jesus that “we find the reason why we’re pro-life and the reason why we take the stance on every other issue that we stand on.”

Fr. Pavone also addressed the media’s part in church restrictions.

“The media’s role in all of this, I believe, plays into the confusion as well, because I don’t believe that our friends in the media,” he said, “necessarily understand these limitations any better than the pastors do.”

Fr. Pavone encouraged his audience to visit www.politicalresponsibility.com and www.abolishingabortion.com and read his new book Abolishing Abortion for more information.

Attorney James Bopp, Jr., a law expert on church freedom in elections, Alliance Defending Freedom’s legal counsel Christiana Holcomb and Priests for Life executive director Janet Morana also spoke at the event.

Report: Pregnancy Centers Saved 300,000 Babies From Abortion in 2015

Report: Pregnancy centers saved 300,000 babies from abortion in 2015

(Pregnancy Help News) A group of children a year old and younger, matching the size of cities like Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Tempe, Ariz., celebrated their first Christmas in 2015 thanks to the work of local staff and volunteers at pro-life pregnancy centers, according to statistics released by Heartbeat International.

The numbers, published in the first-annual Life Trends Report, draw only from Heartbeat International’s 1,300 locations in the U.S., but point to 160,000 lives rescued from the threat of abortion in 2015 alone.

Overall, there are 2,500 life-affirming pregnancy help centers and medical clinics in the U.S., including those who affiliate with Heartbeat International, Care Net, National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), Life Matters Worldwide and local organizations who do not affiliate with broader networks.

Adding in the number of mothers who have chosen life for their babies in 2015 at pregnancy centers and medically licensed pregnancy clinics not affiliated with Heartbeat International, the number of lives saved would jump to 300,000—the size of Pittsburgh or Cincinnati.

“It is such a joy to witness the power of God’s people championing the gift and the Giver of Life every day,” Jor-El Godsey, Vice President of Heartbeat International—whose first involvement at a pregnancy center was in Fort Lauderdale in 1988, said. “No woman should ever feel so alone, coerced, or so hopeless that she ends her child’s life through abortion.

“To know something of the footprint our life-saving network is making—not to mention those life-minded centers who aren’t affiliated with us—is truly overwhelming.”

Godsey will be accompanying six pregnancy center directors, as well as the moms and babies spared from the threat of abortion at Heartbeat International’s Babies Go to Congress Jan. 21 in Washington, D.C.

Over 12 previous trips dating back to 2009, Heartbeat International has brought a total of 119 moms to tell their story of how local pregnancy help made a life-saving difference in their lives to congressional representatives and senators.

“What’s incredible to me about the overall numbers is how quickly we can overlook the value of each individual life in the context of 160,000 or 300,000 saved from abortion,” Godsey said. “Staff and volunteers at local centers, clinic, maternity homes and nonprofit adoption agencies are concentrated on just one person at a time. If we can reach that one person—that mom—with the practical help and compassionate support she deserves and is oftentimes without, we know the impact that can make.

“A report like this helps us get our arms around the positive ripple-effect pregnancy help organizations really have in our world.”

Other highlights from the report include the combined annual budget of U.S. pregnancy help centers—totaling $400 million—almost all of which is drawn from donors and foundations at the local level. Centers averaged 38 volunteers and served 531 clients per location in 2015.

Though it eventually fell short of adoption in both houses of congress, the first-ever federal resolution honoring pregnancy help organizations was introduced this November, complimenting the 24 state-level resolutions approved in 18 states in recent years.

Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), in his speech introducing the resolution, commended pregnancy help organizations for their contributions to local communities.

“The real measure of their significance isn’t in the words of a floor speech in the United States Senate, or in the outcome of a vote,” Lee said. “It’s in the thousands of lives they save from the pain of abortion every year. The millions of teachers, soldiers, nurses, friends and spouses whose lives and contributions to our communities we might never have known had it not been for the unassuming heroes down at the local pregnancy center, giving their time to keep the lights on, to answer the phones, and to help young women find the hope and the courage to choose life.”

Inspire and Equip the Church to Love on Single and Pregnant Girls

About Us

VISION: for every girl with an unplanned pregnancy to have a church to go to for spiritual, emotional and physical support

MISSION: to inspire and equip the church to love on single and pregnant girls

WHAT WE DO:

Embrace Grace is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed for the purpose of providing emotional, practical and spiritual support for single, young women who find themselves in an unintended pregnancy. The primary goal of Embrace Grace is to empower churches across the nation to be a safe and non-judging place for the girls to run to when they find out they are pregnant, instead of the last place they are welcomed because of shame and guilt.

We provide curriculum and resources for the church to implement our program and become a Pro-Love church. If the church, the Body of Christ, will join together to support these girls who choose life, young moms will be more open to not aborting their babies. Whether they keep their baby or choose adoption, Embrace grace is a support system for them as they begin their journey of being a young mother or blessing another family with their baby. Emotionally and spiritually healthy mommies parent emotionally and spiritually healthy babies. Through the Embrace Grace program, lives are saved and generations are being changed. God loves these babies and their mommies, and we do too.

WHY WE EXIST:

Most churches advocate life and discourage women from getting abortions, but once a brave and courageous girl chooses life, a lot of times the church then steps away and has nothing to offer her for support at that point. She is then left with nine months of being scared, worried and feeling alone. This is where the Body of Christ can minister to women who are desperately searching for a Savior.

What If Girls With Unplanned Pregnancies Ran to the Church for Love and Support?

Live Action News
image3 copy

What if girls with unplanned pregnancies ran to the church for love and support?

Guest column: Amy Ford is the co-founder of Embrace Grace, Inc., inspiring the church to provide emotional, practical and spiritual support for single young girls who find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy.

What if girls with unplanned pregnancies ran to the church for love and support instead of away from the church because of shame and guilt?

What if the church welcomed these moms with open arms and helped them get plugged into a spiritual family?

What if churches partnered with local pregnancy centers to eradicate abortion in their community through God’s hope and love?

Churches, unfortunately, have had a reputation with moms with unintended pregnancies as a place they would never want to step foot into. These expectant moms often say, “Why would I go to church? I already feel bad enough about myself as it is – they will just make me feel worse.” These women feel as if the feelings of shame and condemnation would multiply if they opened their hearts to a pastor or member of the church. A new study by Lifeway and CareNet shows that more than 4 in 10 women who have had an abortion were churchgoers when they ended their pregnancy. That means they are sitting in the pews next to you and they do not feel as if they can share what they are going through.

But there is a shift happening – a movement of grace and love. God’s kindness is leading these brave ladies to repentance. The church is taking a new approach to change things. They want to be known more for what they are FOR than what they are against. They are FOR life – not just the life of the baby but the life of the mother, father and all family involved. They are not just pro-birth. They are for ALL life. (For more on the church and abortion, see here.)

The church is taking a fresh and new pro-love approach to welcoming moms with an unplanned pregnancy by partnering with their local pregnancy centers. A non-profit organization called Embrace Grace is leading the way, strengthening the bridge between the center and the church. Embrace Grace has a mission to inspire and equip the church to love on single and pregnant young women.

Embrace Grace is currently operating a test project that could change the way these moms think about the church. 500 “Love-In-A-Box” gifts are being handed out to young, single moms with positive pregnancy tests through 8 participating pregnancy centers in Texas and Idaho. These gifts include a baby onesie that reads “Gift from God”, a copy of the book A Bump in Life: True Stories of Hope & Courage during an Unplanned Pregnancy written by the co-founder of Embrace Grace, Amy Ford. The box also has a journal that has on the cover “You are strong. You are brave. You are loved” along with a pen and a “Loved” hair-tie. And most importantly, a sweet letter to the mom encouraging her to get plugged into the local church and be loved by a spiritual family. With incentives through Embrace Grace like a baby shower, meeting new friends in similar situations, and emotional and spiritual support through great teachings and inspiring church leaders, these brave moms are opening their heart to the idea of the church and the hope of Jesus. Each gift is wrapped in tissue and tied with a tulle bow by volunteers that prayed over each woman that receives the gift, to be filled with hope and confidence in the next season whether it be parenting or choosing adoption.

image1 (3)Embrace Grace has hopes that this project saves babies and mommas, encourages them while filling them with hope that God sees them, and that they get plugged into an Embrace Grace group or other safe church in their area.

Join Embrace Grace in prayer for every mom that opens her gift will feel God’s comfort and the hope of Jesus. Pray that these moms choose LIFE!

We can talk about being pro-life and what our stance on abortion, but without love, our words are just a clanging cymbal. (1 Cor. 13:1) We can put action to our words by reaching out and loving these women that may just need someone to say, “You can do it” or “You will be a great mom.” God sees them and hears their prayers, and He might use us to help be the answer.

“Pro-Life and Pro-Woman Go Hand-in-Hand.”

Hi Mary —

Will you be at the March for Life this year?
The theme of this year’s March – which takes place on Friday, January 22, in Washington, D.C.– is “Pro-Life and Pro-Woman Go Hand-in-Hand.”

This theme emphasizes the reason for much of what your Susan B. Anthony List does as the political arm of the pro-life movement.
SBA List exists to advance pro-life leaders who, in turn, fight for lifesaving legislation. Thanks to you – as well as the efforts of our congressional allies in the last year – we have seen historic votes on compassionate legislation including the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and defunding Planned Parenthood.

Those initiatives are all about protecting the lives of unborn babies and their mothers.

I hope you can be at the March for Life this year, Mary. I will be speaking at the rally prior to the March to introduce a very special video that you’ll hear more about in the weeks to come.

I hope to see you there!

Prayer of Reparation

Novena of Reparation for Roe vs. Wade, January 14-22

The Catholic bishops of the United States have designated January 22 as a special day of prayer and penance in reparation for the massive killing that has resulted from the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision (handed down January 22, 1973) which permitted abortion throughout pregnancy.

Therefore, we at Priests for Life invite you to prepare spiritually for that day by joining a Novena that starts on January 14 and concludes on the 22nd. We invite you to say the prayer below each of those days, and to let us know through this form that you have committed to say it.

Prayer of Reparation
(Click here for Spanish — En Español)

God and Father of Life,
You have created every human person,
And have opened the way for each to have eternal life.

We live in the shadow of death.
Tens of millions of your children have been killed
because of the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

Father, have mercy on us.
Heal our land
And accept our offering of prayer and penance.
In your love for us,
Turn back the scourge of abortion.

May each of us exult in hearts full of hope
And hands full of mercy
And work together to build a culture of life.

We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
