U.S. Abortion Rate reached its *Lowest* Level since 1973!

Susan B. Anthony List
Pro-life Friend —

I wanted you to be among the first to hear the good news – a study out today shows that the U.S. abortion rate reached its *lowest* level since 1973!

This report – which comes from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute – should be treated with caution. But take heart, Pro-life Friend. This is a sign that America is growing weary of abortion.

Our efforts to elect pro-life leaders and pass life-saving laws are WORKING.

In the last few years there has been an explosion of pro-life legislation at the state level including laws to protect babies after 20 weeks, to ban sex-selective abortion, and to stop taxpayer funding of abortion.

The fact that these debates are even happening is evidence that our arguments are convincing. Not only do these laws save babies, they change hearts and minds.

Will you celebrate with me today by making your most generous contribution of $10, $35, $50, or whatever you can afford right now?

The stakes are so incredibly high, Pro-life Friend.

State legislatures – where we hope to see even more victories this year – are in full swing. And each day we get closer to November, the 2014 election cycle heats up.

We’re also working overtime to force a vote on the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the Senate and pass it in even more states.

>>> Meanwhile, your SBA List is leading the charge to build up pro-life women leaders and increase their numbers in office.

We’ve seen firsthand the power of women’s leadership.  Last summer, it was SBA List endorsed women who led the floor debate on the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the House of Representatives.

Double down on your commitment to ending abortion in America by making an immediate donation of $10, $35, $50 or more to the SBA List right now.

We still have a lot of work to do — 1.06 million abortions in America is still clearly 1.06 million abortions too many.

Our goal here at the SBA List is simple: end abortion and save the lives of unborn children and their mothers.

This won’t happen overnight and we cannot become complacent even by this encouraging news.

The news of the decline in the abortion rate is verification that we have to work even harder… because our strategy is working!

The best way to celebrate is to reinvest in the cause to defend life. Please make an immediate donation of any size to the SBA List right now.

It is an honor to stand with you on the front lines, Pro-life Friend. Thank you for all you do on behalf of unborn children and their mothers.

For Life,

Marjorie Dannenfelser

Researchers Find Human Conscience: Part of Brain Differentiating Right and Wrong

Researchers Find Human Conscience: Part of Brain Differentiating Right and Wrong

by Wesley J. Smith | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/30/14 1:30 PM

I have long argued that the difference in humans is moral in nature, not merely biological. But that doesn’t mean that some or all of what makes us unique doesn’t arise out of unique biological differences between us and all other known life.

brainScientists have apparently discovered a region in the brain that may help direct the inherent human trait of judging right from wrong.. From a John Walsh column in The Independent:

Scientists at Oxford University have made a startling discovery: they’ve found a region of the brain that makes you wonder if you’ve done something wrong, and whether you’d have been well advised to do something better. There are several things that you should know about this region, which is inside your head, and the head of the lady sitting beside you on the Tube, and the heads of David Cameron and Lady Gaga and Rouge Dragon Pursuivant of the Royal College of Heralds.

That sounds portentous:

This is about good and bad, right and wrong. This is about the brain’s connection to morality. This means that the Oxford scientists, without apparently realising what they’ve done, have located the conscience.

One, it’s called the lateral frontal pole. Two, it’s unique to humans – they ran tests on monkeys in the course of the research at Oxford and, nope, they don’t have it. Three, it’s the size of “a large Brussels sprout”. And four, it’s a leap beyond current scientific knowledge into realms that can only be described as spooky.

A lot about us is.

This is the bottom line: Whether we evolved, were intelligently designed, were created–or a combination of the above–humans are the only known moral agents in the universe with a sense of “ought,” of right and wrong.

That makes us exceptional! And now, as Walsh posits, scientists may have discovered a biological component that makes that exceptional attribute possible.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput: “The very existence of people who refuse to accept evil and who seek to act virtuously burns the conscience of those who don’t”

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput: “The very existence of people who refuse to accept evil and who seek to act virtuously burns the conscience of those who don’t”

Editor’s note. The following is excerpted from the January 22 homily from the closing mass of the National Prayer Vigil for Life at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in Washington, DC. Weather prevented Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. from traveling to Washington, D.C. for this event. The homily was delivered on his behalf by Reverend Monsignor Walter R. Rossi, Rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadephia

Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadephia

Today is the 41st anniversary of Roe v Wade, which effectively legalized abortion on demand. It’s a time to look back and look ahead. The abortion struggle of the past four decades teaches a very useful lesson. Evil talks a lot about “tolerance” when it’s weak. When evil is strong, real tolerance gets pushed out the door. And the reason is simple. Evil cannot bear the counter-witness of truth. It will not co-exist peacefully with goodness, because evil insists on being seen as right, and worshiped as being right. Therefore, the good must be made to seem hateful and wrong.

The very existence of people who refuse to accept evil and who seek to act virtuously burns the conscience of those who don’t. And so, quite logically, people who march and lobby and speak out to defend the unborn child will be – and are – reviled by leaders and media and abortion activists that turn the right to kill an unborn child into a shrine to personal choice.

Seventy years ago, abortion was a crime against humanity. Four decades ago, abortion supporters talked about the “tragedy” of abortion and the need to make it safe and rare. Not anymore. Now abortion is not just a right, but a right that claims positive dignity, the license to demonize its opponents and the precedence to interfere with constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech, assembly and religion. We no longer tolerate abortion. We venerate it as a totem.

People sometimes ask me if we can be optimistic, as believers, about the future of our country. My answer is always the same. Optimism and pessimism are equally dangerous for Christians because both God and the devil are full of surprises. But the virtue of hope is another matter. The Church tells us we must live in hope, and hope is a very different creature from optimism. The great French Catholic writer Georges Bernanos defined hope as “despair overcome.” Hope is the conviction that the sovereignty, the beauty and the glory of God remain despite all of our weaknesses and all of our failures. Hope is the grace to trust that God is who he claims to be, and that in serving him, we do something fertile and precious for the renewal of the world.

Our lives matter to the degree that we give them away to serve God and to help other people. Our lives matter not because of who we are. They matter because of who God is. His mercy, his justice, his love – these are the things that move the galaxies and reach into the womb to touch the unborn child with the grandeur of being human. And we become more human ourselves by seeing the humanity in the poor, the weak and the unborn child and then fighting for it.

Over the past 41 years, the prolife movement has been written off as dying too many times to count. Yet here we are, again and again, disappointing our critics and refusing to die. And why is that? It’s because the Word of God and the works of God do not pass away. No court decision, no law and no political lobby can ever change the truth about when human life begins and the sanctity that God attaches to each and every human life.

The truth about the dignity of the human person is burned into our hearts by the fire of God’s love. And we can only deal with the heat of that love in two ways. We can turn our hearts to stone. Or we can make our hearts and our witness a source of light for the world. Those of you here today have already made your choice. It’s a wonderful irony that despite the cold and snow of January, there’s no such thing as winter in this great church. This is God’s house. In this place, there’s only the warmth of God’s presence and God’s people. In this place, there’s no room for fear or confusion or despair, because God never abandons his people, and God’s love always wins.

We are each of us created and chosen by God for a purpose, just as David was chosen; which is why the words of the Psalmist speak to every one of us here today:

Oh God, I will sing a new song to you;

With a ten-stringed lyre I will chant your praise,

You who give victory to kings,

And deliver David, your servant from the sword. …

Our job is to work as hard as we can, as joyfully as we can, for as long as we can to encourage a reverence for human life in our country and to protect the sanctity of the human person, beginning with the unborn child.

We also have one other duty: to live in hope; to trust that God sees the weakness of the vain and powerful; and the strength of the pure and weak. The reading from Samuel today reminds us that David cut down the warrior Goliath with a sling and a smooth, simple stone from the wadi [streambed]. And what I see here before me today are not “five smooth stones from the wadi” but hundreds and hundreds of them. Our job is to slay the sin of abortion and to win back the women and men who are captive to the culture of violence it creates. In the long run, right makes might, not the other way around. In the long run, life is stronger than death, and your courage, your endurance, your compassion even for those who revile you, serves the God of life. …

Pro-Life Video of the Day: Twins Saved From Abortion at Planned Parenthood

by Jill Stanek | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/30/14 3:50 PM

by Hans Johnson

Rebecca Rizzi, 24, decided to make an appointment for an abortion at the Planned Parenthood in Tempe, Arizona. “I just felt I had to do it,” she said.

When she arrived, she walked past a group of protesters with the nagging feeling they were in the right. She could hear them every time the door opened and closed. Finally, after waiting more than an hour and leaning toward not going through with it, she went outside for some fresh air.

twins10Being drawn to Sherry Price of the Refuge in the Desert ministry, “I kind of went over to chat and I think I had it set in my mind really not to be dismissive of what they were trying to do, but I was going to ask if they thought what they were doing would actually make a difference.”

Rebecca visited a pregnancy resource center with Sherry and determined to choose life, saying, “I had it set in my mind that I could do this and put the baby up for adoption. I could live with that.”

As the pregnancy went on, Sherry continued in her support, even offering to take in the baby herself. But then Rebecca learned she was carrying twins and decided to raise them herself. Last month Olivia Grace and Kara Shea were born. Asked what her advice would be to others in her situation she answered: “I would say to seek help…. I didn’t realize how many resources there were to women in my position. There’s so many options and resources.”

Congressman: Seeing My Son Respond to My Voice in the Womb Made Me Pro-Life

Congressman: Seeing My Son Respond to My Voice in the Womb Made Me Pro-Life

by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/30/14 1:48 PM

Congressman Mark Meadows of North Carolina gave a moving speech during the debate leading up to passage of a bill that would ban taxpayer financing of abortions.

markmeadowsDuring the debate, Meadows shared a personal story of how he had said nothing on the issue of abortion until seeing and interacting with his son in the womb cemented his pro-life views.

“For far too long I was silent on this particular issue. Some 22 years ago, as we were expecting our first child and my wife was pregnant, I began to talk to her about this particular thing,” Meadows explained.

“And there my son was kicking in his mother’s womb and as we started to see this, I realized very profoundly that not only was it life, but that it responded and my son was responding to my voice and touch. And as we saw that, I realized that I had been silent for far too long,” he continued. “For us to not say something today, to allow — regardless of where you are on this particular issue – to allow taxpayer to be spent – for many of us who find this to be appalling — it’s something we must stand together. So for those who can’t speak for themselves I stand here today and ask my colleagues to support this particular legislation.”

I Was Conceived in Rape But I Didn’t Deserve Death in Abortion

I Was Conceived in Rape But I Didn’t Deserve Death in Abortion

by Mary Rathke | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/30/14 6:32 PM

Because of the circumstances concerning my conception–by RAPE–I, and all those who will be conceived in the same manner have been marked for death by a great number of people. We are called the “demon seed,” who are  unable to contribute to our society, unable to bring our mother’s joy.

Unprotected, sadly, even by some individuals and organizations who refer to themselves as “pro-life”. How sad that so many who purport to champion the cause of the unborn, consider me “an exception”. But I’m NOT an exception…I am a human being, just like any other preborn human being.

maryrathkeI am here today, because my mother–despite the fact that she was mentally ill AND raped, on her way home from work one night–decided my life had value, that no matter how I was conceived, I was valuable and worth protecting. I am far from “demon seed”.  I am a beautiful licensed minister who volunteers to help the homeless, a wife, mother and friend. Yet, like so many minorities in America, I am the target of hate. My people group (those conceived by rape) are not protected by law like many other minority people groups. Instead, every time a law is passed with a rape exception, a clear message is broadcast that my life has no value.  (Current bill being debated with a rape exception is the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act)

What if a certain amount of the population were a specific racial group, and some claimed they were “demon seed?” Wouldn’t there be outrage!?  What if a law was proposed to limit abortions for everyone except the 1% of those minority, would you support it? Because 99% would be saved, or would you see the prejudice against that 1%?

For someone who was conceived in rape-like me, I see this as a prejudice issue. Similar to a hate crime, we are called “demon seed.” I have received hate mail stating my mother made the wrong choice and should have aborted me. I have friends who, because they were conceived in rape, were spit on.

If you are Pro-Choice you believe it is the mother’s choice and any child may be aborted. However, if you are Pro-Life you have a decision to make. Are you pro-life “except in the case of Mary Rathke, conceived in rape or Kristi, conceived in rape/incest?” Can you look me in the eyes and tell me my mother should have had the option of legally aborting me and that my life is not worth fighting for?

Those running a race don’t settle for 99%, they want to finish the race, they don’t train and plan on stopping yards from the finish line, happy they made it that far. Too many have lost focus on the big picture here.  The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) do not have exceptions, they don’t leave out those who are albino or have vitiligo because they may appear “white” to some. Why do Pro-Life people have exceptions? If you fight for life, I implore you, fight for mine as well.

During World War II the American soldiers did not go into the concentration camps and only liberate the Jewish captives and then deny the gypsies release. They fought to release them all, and so must we!

Please find out who your legislators are by typing in your zip code (click here) and call their office. Ask them to support Congressman Paul Broun, MD’s amendment to remove the Rape Exception from the ‘No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act.’ Let us not allow tax payer money to be used to target a specific people group for abortion, and all others not. If the law goes into effect with a rape exception, we are abandoning the one percent, leaving those babies and women in a more vulnerable position, prone to more violence, harm and regret. Their life is worth fighting for! Legislators do not go back later and remove the exceptions, instead they set precedent that exceptions are okay. Please speak out for these so-called “exceptions”. If you don’t, who will?

House Passes Bill to Completely Ban Taxpayer Funding of Abortions

House Passes Bill to Completely Ban

Taxpayer Funding of Abortions

by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/28/14 6:13 PM

The House today approved legislation that will put in place a complete ban on taxpayer funding of abortions that ensures abortions are not directly funded in any federal governmental program or department.

The legislation combines several policies that must be enacted every year in Congressional battles and puts them into law where they will not be in jeopardy of being overturned every time Congress changes hands from pro-life lawmakers to those who support abortions.

The House voted 227-188 for the bill with 221 Republicans and 6 Democrats voting to ban taxpayer funding of abortions under HR7 while 187 Democrats and one Republican voted against it. [ROLL CALL at end of story.]

Congressman Tom price said during the debate: “This legislation prohibits taxpayer funding of elective abortions, no matter where in the federal system that might occur. This is a position supported by the majority of Americans in a bipartisan manner. We have a responsibility, through our government, to protect the most vulnerable among us, not the least of whom are the unborn. This bill is an important step in the right direction.”

The bill has been around a few years but has only been approved in the House thanks to a pro-abortion Senate. On May 4, 2011, the House passed HR 3, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, on a 251-175 vote with Republicans voting 235-0 for the bill and Democrats voting 175-16 against it.

taxpayerfunding3Congressman Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican who is the lead sponsor of the bill, spoke on the House floor during debate and said it would help hold President Barack Obama accountable by ensuring no taxpayer funds are used to pay for abortions.

A majority of Americans object to the use of taxpayer money for funding abortion, according to numerous polls — including a survey CNN conducted in early April showing Americans oppose public funding of abortion by a margin of 61% to 35%.

The bill will also mitigate concerns about abortion funding in the various loopholes in the Obamacare national health care bill that various pro-life organizations warned about during debate on the law. The legislation did not contain language banning funding of abortions in its provisions and the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act would fix that problem.

The National Right to Life Committee sent a letter to House members urging support for the legislation that explains how the bill will help:

“Regrettably, however, the 111th Congress enacted the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). During consideration of that legislation, language was proposed (the Stupak-Pitts Amendment) to apply the principles of the Hyde Amendment to the multitude of programs created by the bill, and the House initially approved that language – but no such provision was part of the enacted law, due to opposition from President Obama and the Senate majority. Consequently, the enacted PPACA contains multiple provisions authorizing funding of abortion and funding of health plans that cover abortion.”

The National Right to Life letter also commented on another lesser-known provision of the tax-funded abortion ban — it’s language to protect health care professionals who don’t want to be involved in abortions.

“The bill would codify the principles of the Hyde-Weldon Amendment, which has been appended to the original Hyde Amendment on every Health and Human Services appropriations bill since 2004. This provision would solidify important protections for health care providers who do not wish to participate in providing abortions – which is especially important in light of the Obama Administration’s February 23, 2011 action rescinding the conscience protection regulation issued by the Bush Administration.”

A new Kaiser Foundation study found that 6.1 million women will gain elective abortion coverage under Obamacare through the Medicaid expansion and new federal premium subsidies. H.R. 7 would essentially codify the executive order used in 2009 by President Obama to secure the final votes needed from pro-life Democrats in order to pass the health care overhaul.

The pro-life group CatholicVote also supports the bill as do many other pro-life groups including Americans United for Life, the Susan B. Anthony List, Liberty Counsel and Family Research Council.

“This critically important legislation is called the No Taxpayer Funding of Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act,” Brian Burch of CatholicVote said. “This legislation has been updated to deal with the horrible expansion of abortion that began with the implementation of Obamacare. The House is ready to lead. If they pass this bill, the pressure will be on Senate Democrats up for election this year in red states like Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, and North Carolina.”

Ohio House Passes ORTL Adoption Reform Legislation

Ohio House Passes ORTL Adoption Reform Legislation

Sub H.B. 307 Approved 77 to 14

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                      CONTACT: Laura Beth Kirsop

DATE: Wednesday, January 29, 2014                                         PHONE: (614) 547-0099 ext. 309

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Today, the Ohio House of Representatives passed Ohio Right to Life’s adoption reform legislation, Substitute H.B. 307, with an historic bipartisan majority vote. This adoption reform will eliminate unnecessary costs, protect birth parents and adoptive families, prevent fraud and minimize the bureaucracy in the Ohio adoption process. This pro-ilife legislation now heads to the Ohio Senate.

Representative Pelanda
Representative Buchy

“Ohio Right to Life sincerely thanks Representatives Jim Buchy and Dorothy Pelanda for sponsoring our pro-life initiative,” said Mike Gonidakis, President of Ohio Right to Life. “This legislation will ensure that the adoption process is less daunting for birth parents, and more enabling to Ohio families wishing to adopt. A mother placing her child for adoption is truly the most selfless act imaginable. We owe it to birth mothers and adoptive couples to ensure our laws are compassionate and supportive.”

At present, middle-class and low-income Ohio families are essentially unable to adopt due to the accumulation of expenses of the adoption process. The adoption reform legislation targets these expenses by increasing the current $1,500 tax credit to $10,000.

“There are Ohio families who want to adopt but are simply hesitant to do so because the current process can be burdensome, emotional, and at times – heartbreaking,” said Representative Dorothy Pelanda. “This bill, in essence, will help to dramatically reduce the costs and eliminate the unnecessary time and emotional burdens while still respecting the rights of birth parents, adoptive parents, and adoptive children alike.”

The legislation’s provision regarding the pre-birth notice system will smooth the process of adoption for birth parents. This system allows a birth father to declare or deny parental rights before the birth of his child if the birth mother chooses an adoption plan. Furthermore, because of the emotional strain of allowing an adoption decree to be challenged for up to 12 months, the provisional time will be shortened to 60 days – thus eliminating the prolonged burden for all parties involved.

“I was pleased to work with the Ohio Right to Life on a bill that not only protects life – but provides more opportunities for women in this state.” said Representative Jim Buchy. “House Bill 307 is a bill that benefits Ohio women and families. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to gain support for this bi-partisan bill.”
