COLUMBUS, Ohio–In a historic upset, Donald J. Trump and Governor Mike Pence were elected President and Vice President of the United States last night. U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) soundly defeated pro-abortion Ted Strickland, 58-37, with the Associated Press calling the race just after the polls closed in Ohio. Pro-life Republicans retained majority control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Defying expectations, pro-life Republicans not only maintained control of the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate, they picked up one seat in each chamber. In all, 90 percent of Ohio Right to Life PAC-endorsed and preferred candidates won their elections.
“After 8 years of a pro-abortion presidency that has brought us disastrous policies that undermine the dignity of the human person, pro-life Ohioans are celebrating the election of Donald Trump and Governor Mike Pence,” said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life. “Despite the millions of dollars that Planned Parenthood invested in Ohio, voters soundly rejected corporate abortion and its radical political scheme. Together, we put a stop to the pro-abortion policies of Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party. Ohio Right to Life looks forward to supporting federal pro-life initiatives that protect the human person’s first right, the right to life.”

With pro-life gains in the Ohio General Assembly, Ohio Right to Life looks forward to continuing to work for increased protections for human life in Ohio. In the last six years of pro-life leadership in the state, Ohio Right to Life has successfully advocated for the enactment of 17 pro-life laws. During that same time, abortions have decreased 25 percent. As the 131st General Assembly comes to a close, Ohio Right to Life now looks forward to advocating for the final passage and enactment of two legislative initiatives: (1.) the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would ban abortions when babies can feel pain at 20 weeks; (2.) the Unborn Child Dignity Act, which would require the humane burial or cremation of aborted children.

“On behalf of our board, our staff and our statewide membership, Ohio Right to Life offers our sincere congratulations to our slate of bipartisan pro-life candidates who won election last night,” said Gonidakis. “Your work to protect and defend the unborn, the disabled, the elderly and all vulnerable persons remains the most significant and noble aspect of your public service.”
