Do You Know Who Your Neighbors Are?

Right to Life of

Northeast Ohio

August 16,  2014

Dear Friend:

I’m pretty sure we all want to live in safe neighborhoods where we don’t have to worry about our children coming in contact with criminals, sexual predators, gangs, drug dealers, or any other dangers. We are ever vigilant in order to protect ourselves and our families.   If you were informed that an undesirable element was in your neighborhood, you wouldn’t be too happy.

I’m sorry to say that we’ve discovered that it’s NOT a beautiful day in the neighborhood in Akron.   We just found out who owns the building at 692 East Market Street where the Akron Women’s Medical Group abortion facility is located, and it’s not pretty. For those of you who follow the news and stay informed about what is happening as we strive to rebuild a culture of life, the name of Martin Haskell will send shivers down your spine. For those of you who are not familiar with him, Martin Haskell is the self proclaimed inventor of partial birth abortion, a procedure that has now been banned in the United States. As if partial birth abortion wasn’t bad enough (if you really want to learn more about this gruesome procedure, CLICK HERE), the list of atrocities against human life accredited to Martin Haskell and his callous disregard for life is unending.

Haskell is notorious for flouting the law by operating with substandard health and safety practices, and he is getting away with it. His abortion clinic near Cincinnati has been operating without a license since it opened in its current location in 2010, and despite repeated efforts to close it down, he keeps getting a “stay of execution” every time an order is issued against him. He has survived several closure orders through lawsuits and more. As recently as yesterday, a judge ordered that his facility must close within 5 days, but he has yet another right to appeal.

I guess I know now why my attempts to contact the “692 Corporation” to try and get them to cancel the lease of the Akron Women’s Medical Group because of THEIR unsafe practices have failed. Finding out that Martin Haskell is the 692 Corporation and the landlord of another abortion practice is devastating, but it won’t make us stop. It will make us ever more vigilant and ever more determined to work harder to battle the atrocity of abortion.

So what DO we do now? We keep educating our children, families, friends and community about the value of human life from conception through natural death. We pray….and pray again. We contribute financially and through volunteer work to groups like us who stay on the front lines to safeguard innocent life. We vote for pro-life legislators—elections are coming up in November, so don’t forget that your vote counts. We pray some more….and we don’t stop.

Martin Haskell won’t stop us….WE will stop him.   Our work goes on.

How do you explain the blood, the pain, the assembly-line death of an unborn baby?

How do you explain the blood, the pain, the assembly-line death of an unborn baby?

By Dave Andrusko

Dirtyworkbook2A tip of the hat to lifenews.com for running this powerful story earlier today. The author’s name is listed only as “Hope.”

We have run dozens and dozens of stories about that moment of shock when recognition comes flooding in: “I was a party to an abortion!” Why did Hope’s story so grab your heart?

She was able to take a job as a sign language interpreter at Planned Parenthood, you can surmise from her story, because her faith was not a powerful factor in her life at that time; she could persuade herself that non-judgmentalism was a great virtue; she needed money for college tuition; and she would be interpreting for deaf women who were coming to Planned Parenthood for something other than having an abortion.

Hope, of course, knew better, deep down, and tried to hide from others where she was working. No doubt her conscience was already being awakened from its slumber. It came fully awake in 2012.

I won’t detract from the power of her story by going into great detail. The “medical procedure” she would be signing for she assumed was probably an ultrasound. She writes

“But this was different – we were in an OR [operating room]. The lights were too bright for the size of the room. There were cold-looking metal objects on a table. I was in an abortion.”

Hope interpreted until the actual abortion began.

Click here to read the August issue of
National Right to Life News,
the “pro-life newspaper of record.”

Read her story in its entirety. The descriptions will be very difficult to read. Hope would soon collapse and cry uncontrollably, the reaction, you would think, of any sentient human being whose heart had not turned to stone.

I have seen “the pictures,” I have read about or listened to hundreds of descriptions of an abortion, including Hope’s.

But I wouldn’t pretend to even begin to fathom what it would be like to be in a room where a little life is being snuffed out—and I did nothing, indeed enabled it in some fashion, however small.

Hope quit that afternoon. Almost two years later she still has nightmares. I think it’s fair to say that she is able to deal with the memory because, as she writes, she knows that God has forgiven her and because the baby is now in Heaven.

When I finished reading her story, I had an unexpected thought. How in the world would you sign [interpret] what this 23-year-old woman, who had been deaf from birth, was going through?

The sight of little arms and legs? The blood, the pain, the assembly-line death of her baby? How would you interpret that?

Yesterday I wrote a piece about “Dirty Work,” which is a novel about a female abortionist who had botched an abortion leaving the woman in a coma. NPR interviewed the author, Gabriel Weston, and asked her about the “detailed description of the procedure.”

Weston acknowledged, “It was probably the biggest challenge of the novel.”

So what did she do?

“In the end, I opted for changing the font when I come to describing the abortion procedure, in order … to flag up for the reader that this is the part in the novel that they might not want to read. So I hope that I have given the reader an out if they need one. But I did feel that writing a novel on abortion wouldn’t be complete without tackling, you know, what it actually is like to see that done, or in the case of this character … I’m writing from her point of view, and she is doing the procedure.”

Imagine if Hope had attempted to sign from the baby’s point of view?

Manitoba school trustee candidate defends pro-abstinence views after backlash

Pete Baklinski Pete Baklinski Follow Pete

By Pete Baklinski

A candidate for school trustee in Winnipeg has ignited a firestorm on social media after declaring on Twitter her support for abstinence-only sex education.

Candace Maxymowich, 20, a public school board trustee candidate in the Louis Riel school division in Winnipeg, became the center of controversy after tweeting Monday evening a question to voters asking them: “Which candidates will stand up for your parental rights & the moral integrity of children?”

When asked by voters what she meant by her statement, Maxymowich responded the next day in a series of tweets.

“I believe the right of parents to educate their children is fundamental,” she wrote. “I recognize parental responsibility and authority regarding sex education for example.”

“Personally, I do not support sex education other than abstinence,” she added.

Maxymowich was immediately attacked on Twitter for her pro-abstinence stance.

“How do people like that stay so ignorant?” one wrote.

“[S]ome of the ideas she has are ridiculous,” wrote another.

“I’m amazed that in today’s smartphone world, archaic beliefs like that somehow persist. Tragic,” said another.

“This makes me ragey. Kids need to learn,” said yet another.

But Maxymowich’s claim is backed up by numerous studies that show abstinence-based programs yield positive benefits.

A 2012 U.S. study found abstinence education reduced the rate of teens engaging in sex for the first time. A 2010 study among African-American preteens found abstinence-only education decreased rates of promiscuity. A 2005 study examining the lives of over 7,000 men and women found that remaining a virgin until 18 was associated with a number of positive effects, including having better marriage stability, achieving a higher education level, and earning higher incomes.

Manitoba’s Sexual Health curriculum currently recommends abstinence as the “only absolutely safe way to avoid pregnancy or an STI.” The curriculum teaches various methods of contraception at the same time.

Maxymowich was also criticized for tweeting a pro-life statement on Monday about defending and speaking for vulnerable children.

“I’m not sure how I feel that you’re sort-of dragging the abortion debate into a school trustee race,” wrote one person on twitter.

Maxymowich defended her pro-abstinence statements to reporters yesterday, saying voters should know where their candidates stand and if they share their values.

“I personally don’t support sex education other than abstinence — that’s my own personal belief,” she told the Winnipeg Sun. “It’s not something I intend to campaign on and not necessarily something I would push for if elected.”

The election is scheduled for September 10.

Fifty Shades of Grey trailer is forcing everyone’s focus on dangerous sex practices

LIVE ACTION

a new media movement for life

Dear Friend,   The release of the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer is forcing everyone’s focus on dangerous sex practices…and Planned Parenthood’s permissive attitude toward them.   We’ve seen powerful reactions to our SexEd campaign from multiple opinion-makers.  Parents, teachers, and young people are simply not comfortable with a billion-dollar abortion corporation telling 15-year-olds to try out bondage and sadomasochism, or to treat their sex partners like a literal toilet.   We’ve seen a flood of coverage of Planned Parenthood’s dangerous sex advice for kids.  You can watch some interviews and clips from Fox and CNN here, here, and here.  Kathryn Jean Lopez wrote a stirring op-ed at National Review Online on Monday.  Another powerful piece came out just yesterday at Acculturated.

S.E. Cupp discussing our SexEd investigation.

State and local officials are also taking notice.  We let you know last week that the attorney general of Colorado is reviewing our shocking investigative video from Denver.  (If you haven’t seen that tape, you need to watch it right now.)   It’s good to see a major news network covering this scandal.  And it’s good to see concerned citizens writing about it, and getting published.  But some of the most powerful change comes when you – working hard in your own community – stand up and act.  We all can take an active role in safeguarding our nation’s children against Planned Parenthood’s agenda – both against those children still in the womb, and against those who make it out alive.   The last time we contacted you, we asked you to send a letter to your local legislators, local papers, and local superintendents.  The response was overwhelming – over a hundred local letters sent in just one day!  If you haven’t tried this yet, it’s really easy to do.   Click here to visit our action center and get started.  We’ve made sure you can add words of your own, and we’re really glad to see people taking advantage of that.  For the people who receive these, your personal statements mean a lot more than just a form letter.   Thank you so much for all you do for the protection of our children, born and pre-born.
Yours in the fight for life,

A Lesson from “Charlotte’s Web”

A Lesson from “Charlotte’s Web”

By Micaiah Bilger, Education Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

charlotteswebA few Sundays ago, when I was visiting my family, my little sister pulled out a paperback copy of “Charlotte’s Web” and asked if I would read to her.

I hadn’t read the book in years – maybe not even since I was 8, the same age as my little sister. We sat down on the sofa, and I turned the pages to Chapter 1:

“Where’s Papa going with that ax?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.

“Out to the hoghouse,” replied Mrs. Arable. “Some pigs were born last night.”

“I don’t see why he needs an ax,” continued Fern, who was only eight.

“Well,” said her mother, “one of the pigs is a runt. It’s very small and weak, and it will never amount to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it.”

… Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. …

“Fern,” said Mr. Arable, “I know more about raising a litter of pigs than you do. A weakling makes trouble. Now run along!”

“But it’s unfair,” cried Fern. “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”

Mr. Arable smiled. “Certainly not,” he said, looking down at his daughter with love. “But this is different. A little girl is one thing, a little runty pig is another.”

“I see no difference,” replied Fern … “This is the most terrible case of injustice I ever heard of.”

A queer look came over John Arable’s face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.

“All right,” he said.

Fern’s words almost seem prophetic, “If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?” Today babies in the womb are killed just because they may have a disability or abnormality. Many parents are pressured toward abortion because their baby is imperfect in the world’s eyes.

Our society justifies these babies’ deaths with excuses: The baby may suffer, or the baby could be a “burden” for the family, or the baby may not live long anyway. I think the problem lies with our flawed perspective, not these children’s lives.

I was really struck by Fern’s example. She fought and pleaded for a life who many didn’t see as valuable. She gave up her time to provide the extra care and attention that that life needed.

Fern approached the situation from the simple, untainted logic of a child. She didn’t think twice. She didn’t question whether a life was worth saving, because it never occurred to her to question the value of a life at all. She understood that every life deserves protection, no matter how long they live or how much care they need.

I’m so glad “Charlotte’s Web” is still a classic on children’s bookshelves. We need more heroines like Fern.

The Devastating Reality of Post Abortion Stress Syndrome

The devastating reality of Post Abortion Stress Syndrome

 By Christina Martin

woman-thought2She sat across from me, tears streaming down her face. The subject of abortion came up and this woman struggled to discuss it. ‘Emotionally damaging’ was the phrase she used to describe the procedure.

She thought about her child. She wondered how old he or she may be. As she reflected on her past she wrestled with feelings of regret. She admitted to choosing abortion without knowing all of the facts. She felt rushed into the decision, wishing now that she would have gathered more information before she decided.

This woman’s story is all too common. In the decade I’ve been involved in the pro-life movement I’ve heard similar tales. I met a woman who was so affected by her abortion that she couldn’t talk about it for 20 years.

Another lady shared a chilling story of using the RU-486 pill and the absolute horror she faced witnessing her unborn baby pass. I remember the African-American woman who pulled me aside and whispered her confession. The pain of her choice etched upon her face.

Susanne Babbel is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has a P.H.D in Psychology. She is also a psychotherapist with an emphasis on trauma and depression. In an article for ‘Psychology Today’ titled, ‘Post Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS) – Does It Exist?’ she writes: ‘No matter your philosophical, religious, or political views on abortion, the fact of the matter is, the actual experience can affect women not only on a personal level but can potentially have psychological repercussions.’

Babbel refers to this as Post Abortion Stress Syndrome. (PASS) is based on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD). It’s the name given to the psychological aftereffects of abortion. Babbel notes that the disorder is real, although the term has not been recognized by the American Psychological Association.

Sadly those who support abortion often refuse to acknowledge that long term negative effects that it can bring to many women. The National Abortion Federation calls (PASS) a ‘myth‘ and the popular liberal Ms. Magazine says it’s a ‘bogus affliction invented by the religious right’.

However Babbel asserts “any event that causes trauma can indeed result in PTSD, and abortion is no exception.” Babbel is not declaring this because she’s a pro-life therapist. She further states, ‘Believing that PASS exists does not mean that one does not believe in a woman’s right to choose; it simply means that one believes in supportive and constructive counseling around the trauma symptoms’. Babbel lists ‘guilt, anxiety, numbness, depression, flashbacks, and suicidal thoughts as symptoms of PASS.

Babbel makes no claim that these symptoms will follow after every abortion. She writes: While abortion can induce post-traumatic stress in some, others will suffer no repercussions at all. I can understand that statement.

I personally believe there is an undeniable, emotional, physical, and even spiritual connection between a mother and a child. However, I’ve met a number of post-abortive women who have a range of experiences. I don’t oppose abortion solely because I believe it will cause trauma to a woman’s soul. I oppose abortion because it’s morally wrong to destroy the life of a fetus. Some women will make that destructive decision with little sorrow, regret, or negative emotional consequences.

We live in a society that views abortion as a private decision which women need not regret. Therefore women with seemingly ‘positive’ abortion experiences are often encouraged to share them with pride. However women with negative experiences find themselves in a difficult place. They suffer from the pain of their abortion, all the while living in a society that tells them that pain isn’t real or necessary.

Thankfully organizations are here for that very reason. They are safe places for women who need healing after their abortion. If you or anyone you know has suffered emotional or physical pain from an abortion, there is help available to you. You are not alone. You don’t have to carry the secret or live in shame. Check out resources like Afterabortion.org and take a step towards freedom.

Research Shows Unborn Babies Anticipate Touch in the Womb

Research Shows Unborn Babies Anticipate Touch in the Womb

An article in the British periodical The Daily Mail discusses an article in The Journal Developmental Psychobiology which describes the cognitive development of unborn babies. Based on conclusions reached by researchers from Durham and Lancaster Universities in the U.K.

“For the first time, psychologists discovered that foetuses were able to predict, rather than react to, their own hand movements towards their mouths as they entered the later stages of gestation compared to earlier in a pregnancy….

ultrasound4d44Psychologist Dr Nadja Reissland explained: ‘Increased touching of the lower part of the face and mouth in foetuses could be an indicator of brain development necessary for healthy development, including preparedness for social interaction, self-soothing and feeding.’

The discovery comes after a previous study found babies make faces in the womb, potentially as practice before coming in to the world.

Dr Reissland and a team of researchers from Lancaster University and Durham University, which led the study, used ‘4D’ ultrasound scans – 3D scans that can be seen in real time – to image eight girls and seven boys once a month between the 24th and 36th week of pregnancy.

Both boys and girls showed the same rate of development during the study.

In the earlier stage of gestation they saw babies touch the upper part and sides of their heads, although later on they began to touch the the lower, more sensitive, part of their faces and mouths.

By the 36th week the majority of fetuses were seen opening their mouths before they touched them, which scientists say is a sign that they were anticipating touch…..

Exposing the Hypocrisy of Opposing the Death Penalty But Supporting Abortion in 10 Seconds

Exposing the Hypocrisy of Opposing the Death Penalty But Supporting Abortion in 10 Seconds

by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 8/4/14 9:32 AM<!––><!––>

Opinion

One of the biggest hypocrisies in the abortion debate are those abortion defenders who oppose the death penalty because it involves killing a human being but who steadfastly support legal abortion, which also involves killing human beings.

Here is a cartoon that exposes that hypocrisy in 10 seconds.

deathpenalty2

Writing at LifeNews, Calvin Freiburger has talked about this hypocrisy.

There’s a funny thing about most pro-abortion criticisms of pro-lifers: usually they reveal more about the challenger than the challenged.

Take, for example, the old canard about pro-lifers supporting the death penalty. Upon positing that unborn babies don’t deserve to be killed, we are frequently condemned as hypocrites for (allegedly) turning a blind eye to the state-sanctioned killing of another group of people.

Putting aside the minor detail that they often don’t bother to check whether the pro-lifer in question actually does support capital punishment, the comparison fails every major substantive comparison, other than both acts involving killing. To equate the purposes or the characteristics of either is like equating a Radio Flyer with the Mars rover.

Click here to sign up for daily pro-life news alerts from LifeNews.com

Abortion kills an innocent child; capital punishment kills someone convicted of an unthinkable crime. Abortion can be done for virtually any reason; capital punishment is, well, punishment, meant to deter the worst offenses. Abortion is left entirely to the choice of one woman, with no representation of any kind for the baby’s interests (even non-binding informational requirements are too much to ask of the average abortion defender); capital punishment is carried out only after an investigation, a trial with a constitutionally guaranteed legal defense, conviction by a jury of one’s peers, sentencing, and a lengthy appeal process.

Abortion Has Cost the U.S. $16 Trillion in Lost Revenue, The Size of the National Debt

Abortion Has Cost the U.S. $16 Trillion in Lost Revenue, The Size of the National Debt

by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 8/4/14 10:15 AM<!––><!––>

National

Washington, DC (LiveAction) — The pro-life movement often talks of the science behind life in the womb, the fact that abortion leaves emotional, psychological and physical scars on women and the inherent beauty of every life. What we don’t often talk about, though, is money.

After all, doesn’t it seem somewhat crass to couch pro-life arguments in terms of economic benefit? The reality, though, is that abortion hasn’t impacted our society only in emotional, social, and cultural ways. It’s also impacted our society economically. And one political scientist is now claiming this very thing.

proabortion12Mark A. Olson, a former liberal community organizer turned pro-life consultant, has published research that abortion in America has cost our nation more than $16 trillion in federal revenue – or approximately the amount of our current national debt.

In a slide presentation summarizing his research, he first notes that the figure of 50 million abortions far under-represents the cumulative population loss due to abortion, which he places at a staggering 126,469,904 as of January 1, 2014.

Based on this number, Olson applies the per capita individual tax burden to the lost population number for each year, a method which he says controls for other demographic variables. His finding: as of January 1, 2014, $15,734,000,000 in federal revenue has been lost due to abortion.

A press release issued today by Olson stated, “Basic macroeconomics says that any such loss in population will result in a collapse of the necessary aggregate supply and demand to sustain long term national economic growth. The population loss due to abortion would have the same negative economic impact as any population loss due to war, epidemic, or natural disaster. “

Olson concludes that the fiscal problems our nation is facing can be solved neither by conservative nor liberal policies – but only through ending abortion on demand.

The reality is that abortion doesn’t ‘only’ kill children. It doesn’t only devastate women. It doesn’t only shock and grieve men. It doesn’t only deaden national conscience and deprave our collective culture. It does all of these, and more.

Certainly, life is sacred apart from economics – and it always will be. And truth be told, waving signs that read “Save a life, save the economy” probably won’t change many minds and hearts.

At the same time, evaluating the impact of abortion without evaluating the resulting economic losses is an incomplete study. Tragically, we know that not even one dollar of that lost $15 trillion is enough to bring back one of the precious lives lost through abortion.

But one thing we can do is make sure that not one more dollar funds the taking of innocent lives – and not one more dollar propagates the lie that abortion does no harm.

Pregnant “Today Show” host moderates fascinating segment on fetal development

NRL News Today

Pregnant “Today Show” host moderates fascinating segment on fetal development

By Andrew Bair

Savannah Guthrie

With refreshing candor, the hosts on NBC’s Today Show discussed the amazing journey of our lives before birth. The segment highlighted developmental milestones like taste, smell, movement, sight and hearing. New studies indicating unborn children are capable of learning nursery rhymes and respond to their mother’s stress level were also discussed.

Dr. Bill Fifer, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, said, “Everything that a newborn baby does, a fetus has pretty much done already.”

Most of this information comes as little surprise to the pro-life movement. Pro-life advocates have worked for years to educate the public on the incredible facts about our lives in what Today Show host Savannah Guthrie referred to as “Hotel Uterus.” (Guthrie is pregnant and due next month.)

We know that a baby’s tiny heart is beating as early as 18 days after sperm-egg fusion. Brain waves are detectable by 6 weeks and babies can experience dream (REM) sleep by 17 weeks. Substantial medical and scientific evidence has demonstrated that unborn children are capable of feeling pain by 20 weeks, if not earlier.

The Today Show segment also highlighted a new study on the development of taste: “Researchers have found that mothers who consistently ate carrots during the end of their pregnancy had babies who enjoyed that taste more than babies whose mothers hadn’t shared the same diet.”

Based on the results of the taste study, Guthrie’s baby probably has a “real hankering for junk food and sweets,” co-host Matt Lauer joked. Guthrie responded, “Mine would be like, at 20 weeks, your baby likes Indian food with beef jerky.”

Advancements in technology have offered a greater glimpse into our earliest moments of life. At the time Roe v. Wade was decided by the Supreme Court, a central question in the abortion debate was at what point life begins.

Now, even pro-abortion bloggers like Jodi Jacobson at RH Reality Check concede that life begins at conception. Jacobson made that point in a 2012 article entitled “Life Begins At Conception. That’s Not the Point.”

The debate has now shifted to the question of when life has value and deserves protection.

Editor’s note. The segment on the Thursday edition of The Today Show, “The Secret Life of Babies: New Research about what’s learned inside the womb,” was so informative and so insightful we are running two post. (The other can be read at nrlc.cc/UOtqCr.
