Archbishop Charles J. Chaput: “The very existence of people who refuse to accept evil and who seek to act virtuously burns the conscience of those who don’t”

Editor’s note. The following is excerpted from the January 22 homily from the closing mass of the National Prayer Vigil for Life at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in Washington, DC. Weather prevented Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. from traveling to Washington, D.C. for this event. The homily was delivered on his behalf by Reverend Monsignor Walter R. Rossi, Rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Today is the 41st anniversary of Roe v Wade, which effectively legalized abortion on demand. It’s a time to look back and look ahead. The abortion struggle of the past four decades teaches a very useful lesson. Evil talks a lot about “tolerance” when it’s weak. When evil is strong, real tolerance gets pushed out the door. And the reason is simple. Evil cannot bear the counter-witness of truth. It will not co-exist peacefully with goodness, because evil insists on being seen as right, and worshiped as being right. Therefore, the good must be made to seem hateful and wrong.

The very existence of people who refuse to accept evil and who seek to act virtuously burns the conscience of those who don’t. And so, quite logically, people who march and lobby and speak out to defend the unborn child will be – and are – reviled by leaders and media and abortion activists that turn the right to kill an unborn child into a shrine to personal choice.

Seventy years ago, abortion was a crime against humanity. Four decades ago, abortion supporters talked about the “tragedy” of abortion and the need to make it safe and rare. Not anymore. Now abortion is not just a right, but a right that claims positive dignity, the license to demonize its opponents and the precedence to interfere with constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech, assembly and religion. We no longer tolerate abortion. We venerate it as a totem.

People sometimes ask me if we can be optimistic, as believers, about the future of our country. My answer is always the same. Optimism and pessimism are equally dangerous for Christians because both God and the devil are full of surprises. But the virtue of hope is another matter. The Church tells us we must live in hope, and hope is a very different creature from optimism. The great French Catholic writer Georges Bernanos defined hope as “despair overcome.” Hope is the conviction that the sovereignty, the beauty and the glory of God remain despite all of our weaknesses and all of our failures. Hope is the grace to trust that God is who he claims to be, and that in serving him, we do something fertile and precious for the renewal of the world.

Our lives matter to the degree that we give them away to serve God and to help other people. Our lives matter not because of who we are. They matter because of who God is. His mercy, his justice, his love – these are the things that move the galaxies and reach into the womb to touch the unborn child with the grandeur of being human. And we become more human ourselves by seeing the humanity in the poor, the weak and the unborn child and then fighting for it.

Over the past 41 years, the prolife movement has been written off as dying too many times to count. Yet here we are, again and again, disappointing our critics and refusing to die. And why is that? It’s because the Word of God and the works of God do not pass away. No court decision, no law and no political lobby can ever change the truth about when human life begins and the sanctity that God attaches to each and every human life.

The truth about the dignity of the human person is burned into our hearts by the fire of God’s love. And we can only deal with the heat of that love in two ways. We can turn our hearts to stone. Or we can make our hearts and our witness a source of light for the world. Those of you here today have already made your choice. It’s a wonderful irony that despite the cold and snow of January, there’s no such thing as winter in this great church. This is God’s house. In this place, there’s only the warmth of God’s presence and God’s people. In this place, there’s no room for fear or confusion or despair, because God never abandons his people, and God’s love always wins.

We are each of us created and chosen by God for a purpose, just as David was chosen; which is why the words of the Psalmist speak to every one of us here today:

Oh God, I will sing a new song to you;

With a ten-stringed lyre I will chant your praise,

You who give victory to kings,

And deliver David, your servant from the sword. …

Our job is to work as hard as we can, as joyfully as we can, for as long as we can to encourage a reverence for human life in our country and to protect the sanctity of the human person, beginning with the unborn child.

We also have one other duty: to live in hope; to trust that God sees the weakness of the vain and powerful; and the strength of the pure and weak. The reading from Samuel today reminds us that David cut down the warrior Goliath with a sling and a smooth, simple stone from the wadi [streambed]. And what I see here before me today are not “five smooth stones from the wadi” but hundreds and hundreds of them. Our job is to slay the sin of abortion and to win back the women and men who are captive to the culture of violence it creates. In the long run, right makes might, not the other way around. In the long run, life is stronger than death, and your courage, your endurance, your compassion even for those who revile you, serves the God of life. …

Pro-Life Video of the Day: Twins Saved From Abortion at Planned Parenthood

Pro-Life Video of the Day: Twins Saved From Abortion at Planned Parenthood

Rebecca Rizzi, 24, decided to make an appointment for an abortion at the Planned Parenthood in Tempe, Arizona. “I just felt I had to do it,” she said.

When she arrived, she walked past a group of protesters with the nagging feeling they were in the right. She could hear them every time the door opened and closed. Finally, after waiting more than an hour and leaning toward not going through with it, she went outside for some fresh air.

twins10Being drawn to Sherry Price of the Refuge in the Desert ministry, “I kind of went over to chat and I think I had it set in my mind really not to be dismissive of what they were trying to do, but I was going to ask if they thought what they were doing would actually make a difference.”

Rebecca visited a pregnancy resource center with Sherry and determined to choose life, saying, “I had it set in my mind that I could do this and put the baby up for adoption. I could live with that.”

As the pregnancy went on, Sherry continued in her support, even offering to take in the baby herself. But then Rebecca learned she was carrying twins and decided to raise them herself. Last month Olivia Grace and Kara Shea were born. Asked what her advice would be to others in her situation she answered: “I would say to seek help…. I didn’t realize how many resources there were to women in my position. There’s so many options and resources.”

Congressman: Seeing My Son Respond to My Voice in the Womb Made Me Pro-Life

Congressman: Seeing My Son Respond to My Voice in the Womb Made Me Pro-Life

by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/30/14 1:48 PM

Congressman Mark Meadows of North Carolina gave a moving speech during the debate leading up to passage of a bill that would ban taxpayer financing of abortions.

markmeadowsDuring the debate, Meadows shared a personal story of how he had said nothing on the issue of abortion until seeing and interacting with his son in the womb cemented his pro-life views.

“For far too long I was silent on this particular issue. Some 22 years ago, as we were expecting our first child and my wife was pregnant, I began to talk to her about this particular thing,” Meadows explained.

“And there my son was kicking in his mother’s womb and as we started to see this, I realized very profoundly that not only was it life, but that it responded and my son was responding to my voice and touch. And as we saw that, I realized that I had been silent for far too long,” he continued. “For us to not say something today, to allow — regardless of where you are on this particular issue – to allow taxpayer to be spent – for many of us who find this to be appalling — it’s something we must stand together. So for those who can’t speak for themselves I stand here today and ask my colleagues to support this particular legislation.”

I Was Conceived in Rape But I Didn’t Deserve Death in Abortion

I Was Conceived in Rape But I Didn’t Deserve Death in Abortion

by Mary Rathke | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/30/14 6:32 PM

Because of the circumstances concerning my conception–by RAPE–I, and all those who will be conceived in the same manner have been marked for death by a great number of people. We are called the “demon seed,” who are  unable to contribute to our society, unable to bring our mother’s joy.

Unprotected, sadly, even by some individuals and organizations who refer to themselves as “pro-life”. How sad that so many who purport to champion the cause of the unborn, consider me “an exception”. But I’m NOT an exception…I am a human being, just like any other preborn human being.

maryrathkeI am here today, because my mother–despite the fact that she was mentally ill AND raped, on her way home from work one night–decided my life had value, that no matter how I was conceived, I was valuable and worth protecting. I am far from “demon seed”.  I am a beautiful licensed minister who volunteers to help the homeless, a wife, mother and friend. Yet, like so many minorities in America, I am the target of hate. My people group (those conceived by rape) are not protected by law like many other minority people groups. Instead, every time a law is passed with a rape exception, a clear message is broadcast that my life has no value.  (Current bill being debated with a rape exception is the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act)

What if a certain amount of the population were a specific racial group, and some claimed they were “demon seed?” Wouldn’t there be outrage!?  What if a law was proposed to limit abortions for everyone except the 1% of those minority, would you support it? Because 99% would be saved, or would you see the prejudice against that 1%?

For someone who was conceived in rape-like me, I see this as a prejudice issue. Similar to a hate crime, we are called “demon seed.” I have received hate mail stating my mother made the wrong choice and should have aborted me. I have friends who, because they were conceived in rape, were spit on.

If you are Pro-Choice you believe it is the mother’s choice and any child may be aborted. However, if you are Pro-Life you have a decision to make. Are you pro-life “except in the case of Mary Rathke, conceived in rape or Kristi, conceived in rape/incest?” Can you look me in the eyes and tell me my mother should have had the option of legally aborting me and that my life is not worth fighting for?

Those running a race don’t settle for 99%, they want to finish the race, they don’t train and plan on stopping yards from the finish line, happy they made it that far. Too many have lost focus on the big picture here.  The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) do not have exceptions, they don’t leave out those who are albino or have vitiligo because they may appear “white” to some. Why do Pro-Life people have exceptions? If you fight for life, I implore you, fight for mine as well.

During World War II the American soldiers did not go into the concentration camps and only liberate the Jewish captives and then deny the gypsies release. They fought to release them all, and so must we!

Please find out who your legislators are by typing in your zip code (click here) and call their office. Ask them to support Congressman Paul Broun, MD’s amendment to remove the Rape Exception from the ‘No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act.’ Let us not allow tax payer money to be used to target a specific people group for abortion, and all others not. If the law goes into effect with a rape exception, we are abandoning the one percent, leaving those babies and women in a more vulnerable position, prone to more violence, harm and regret. Their life is worth fighting for! Legislators do not go back later and remove the exceptions, instead they set precedent that exceptions are okay. Please speak out for these so-called “exceptions”. If you don’t, who will?
