Debunking The Stereotypes About Abortion

NRL News Today

Debunking the stereotypes about abortion

By Dave Andrusko

pinkbaby_0As we approach the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I would like to dig deeper into a post I wrote about “The Abortion Stereotype,” a commentary written by Razib Khanjan that appeared in the New York Times.

There is very little in what Mr. Rhanjan had to say that would surprise pro-lifers. But—remember—this appears in the unofficial flagship publication of the Abortion Establishment. There are some good points but a few clunkers as well.

For example, referring to the stereotype that women are more pro-abortion than men are, it’s important that the Times’ readers know

The polling confounds such stereotypes. The General Social Survey, which has been tracking American opinions for decades, includes the question of whether a woman should be allowed to get an abortion if she “wants it for any reason.” In 17 of the 23 years that this question has been asked, men have answered “yes” to a greater extent than women. The average difference was about 1.5 percentage points — a small but consistent gender gap, if not the one people seem to expect.

He digs deeper

While, on the whole, there isn’t a major difference in the sexes’ attitudes toward abortion, there is one when we separate men and women by ideology. If we look at the data since 2000 (to get a more contemporary perspective), on the liberal end of the ideological spectrum men are consistently less supportive of abortion on demand than women. On the conservative end of the spectrum, it’s women who like abortion on demand less than men do.

In other words, conservative women are the most anti-abortion segment of the population, and liberal women are the most in favor of abortion rights. You might say that the more significant difference here is not between men and women, but among women.

There are many qualifications even to this generalization.

So, yes, there is a large gap between these ideologically polarized positions [“extremely liberal” women and “extremely conservative” women], but we miss a substantial proportion of the electorate if all we apprehend is the stylized cartoon. Nuance goes out the window when slogans about the “war on women” or the “liberal media” dominate public discourse. …

A greater engagement with the facts would enable those who support abortion rights to consider why so many women do not, rather than dismissing their political opponents as motivated by misogyny or false consciousness.

Two quick points, the first of which is two sided. The “war on women” was/is an imaginary construct that existed in the heads of the abortion movement but was given plausibility by its willing collaborators in the media. It appears to have run its course, but, of course, it will be dredged up using some slightly altered phraseology.

So Khanjan got the hype about the ‘war on women’ correct but chooses (perhaps to appear “balanced”) to ignore that the war on women meme would never have achieved liftoff without most of the major media treating it as if it was spot on, rather than bogus from start to finish. In fact, of course, the real war on women is sex-selection abortion which pro-abortion feminists refuse to do anything about.

Second—and I am not blaming Khanjan for not addressing it—is that members of the younger generations (male and female) are so very pro-life. We’ve run many stories in NRL News Today and NRL News demonstrating how this true, both as measured by public opinion polls and activism.

I’m going to re-post an article that I wrote way back in 2006—“More Data Showing That Young People Are Pro-Life.” While it’s older, nothing has changed, including the way the analyst of the poll taken of students at Hamilton College tries to wiggle out of the conclusion, or at least diminish the impact.

Pregnancy: An Everyday Miracle

Pregnancy: an everyday miracle

By Tamara El-Rahi

20-week-Ultrasound88A few weeks before I knew I was pregnant, something felt different. I avoided soft cheese when offered, just in case. And I continued to wonder whether maybe, just maybe, there might be a special little life growing inside of me.

When I did take the at-home pregnancy test, my husband and I both cried and laughed with joy. We were parents! After seeing a doctor the next day to confirm, we orchestrated a set-up for our families to come over the following week and kept our mouths shut until announcing the news then. Who would have known that this “bunch of cells” inside of me could cause so much jumping and shouting and so many happy tears?

On the other hand, who knew that this tiny thing could also change my body and my life so much? I guess I had never before paid proper attention to pregnant mothers in their first trimesters, but as it turns out, babies make an impact long before they’re born.

I couldn’t eat what I normally liked and lost my appetite a lot of the time, I was absolutely exhausted, being on the go for too long made me queasy, I could smell anything whether it was a mile away or cooked in my house a week before, scents I used to like now horrified me, and there was a constant metallic taste in my mouth.

But would I change any of it? Not for the world – it’s all so worth it!

I also grew in a feeling of responsibility towards our tiny person – everything I do at the moment can affect it. What I eat, how I sleep, what activities I partake in, how I’m feeling. It’s probably a small taste of the responsibility I’ll feel when our child is born – the duty to bring it up to be healthy, happy and a good person.

We may have only been married for a few months now but my first-trimester symptoms proved to me even more that I had chosen a good husband. I was sick and worn out but I didn’t have to worry about my share of the household duties – his already protective nature ramped up and he’s been looking after me, making me rest and cooking for me (after his full day of work and post-work activities, even when it was I who generally gets home first). And although this was so tiring for him, I’m so impressed that he’s still willing to stick to our dreams of a big family.

We experienced our first ultrasound at nine weeks, and we just couldn’t believe what we were seeing. How can anyone say that a fetus isn’t a human being until it leaves the womb? We could already see our little one’s arms and legs moving around, the tiny heart beating, and could even see the way it rested in a holiday-esque style with its arms behind its head. What a little miracle!

I look at my mother, after nine pregnancies, with new and admiring eyes. My mother-in-law, my aunties, my friends – even mothers and pregnant women I see on the street: I applaud them all. How impressive for women to carry on, working, living, loving, while dealing with the often uncomfortable symptoms of pregnancy.

But even amongst all the “weakness” of the symptoms I’m experiencing, I feel strong. I feel in awe that my body can support the growth of a child and will know how to nourish it once it’s born.

Sure, my body might never be the same again, the worry will set in and I might never have another good night’s sleep – but for now my skin’s glowing, I get to carry my child around with me all the time, and life is full of the excitement of wondering what our baby will be like.

How cool is that?!

Equipping Young Leaders for the Future: The National Right to Life Academy

By Emily Derois, graduate, 2015 National Right to Life Academy

Emily Derois

Emily Derois

This past summer I left my little town in Pennsylvania and journeyed to Washington D.C. with one intent: to learn how to become a voice for the voiceless. Just what this entailed, I had no idea. The Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation and the Knights of Columbus Council 15351 generously offered me partial scholarships to attend the National Right to Life Academy. So with only a basic understanding of what the next five weeks would hold, I applied. Now that the experience is over and my work completed, I would heartily recommend the academy to any students interested in the pro-life movement.

Empowering Youth

We live in a society so focused on being politically correct, most of us hesitate to take a stance against the injustice of abortion and euthanasia. Yet it is imperative that we defend the unborn and helpless. If you’re anything like me, these grand words are too abstract and distant. After all, what can the average student actually do to make any real impact? The academy empowers the youth, as they teach practical and real strategies that further the movement.

Life at the Academy

The academy is held in Washington D.C., at the National Right to Life headquarters. The course involves five fast-paced weeks of reading, practicum, and hearing from leaders in the pro-life movement. The topics covered deal not only with abortion, but also physician-assisted suicide, stem-cell research, and the history of the pro-life movement. I found the pro-life movement’s history surprisingly helpful, as you recognize the mistakes made and learn from the implications of these failed strategies. There is also a weekend spent learning Robert’s Rules of Order, providing students with the skills to conduct structured meetings. After this brief course in parliamentary procedure, you will become a registered member of The National Association of Parliamentarians. The five weeks is well utilized, as each subject is studied in depth. Each of the students left confident in our thorough understanding of these core life issues.

Learning from the Leaders

Leaders in the movement, such as Dr. David Prentice and Burke Balch, give the lectures. And the practicums prepare each student to successfully defend life against every attack used by abortion advocates. Several times a day, the student will give an impromptu speech or answer pro-abortion questions while being filmed. The videos are replayed so the student can hear and see his or her arguments and receive advice. Although the initial thought of practicum was intimidating, this is an extremely helpful and necessary preparation. It is a very friendly environment, and the criticism is constructive. Everyone is trying to achieve the same goal, and the focus is on giving you the skills needed to effectively defend the helpless.

An Invitation to Students

Some state affiliates of NRLC offer scholarships to help students defray the tuition for the Academy as the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation did for me. Students can e-mail academy@nrlc.org to find out which states offer scholarships. National Right to Life equips students with the knowledge and skills to become leaders in the pro-life movement. You can apply and find further information about this course by visiting National Right to Life’s website at: www.nrlc.org/academy.

The National Right to Life 2016 Pro-Life Essay Contest Deadline Approaching

NRL News Today

The National Right to Life 2016 Pro-Life Essay Contest Deadline Approaching

By Jacki Ragan

essay55Each year, National Right to Life sponsors a Pro-Life Essay Contest for students in grades 7-12. Minnesota state Senator Michelle Fischbach oversees and directs the contest.

For 2016 the essay should address the question, “What can I do to build a pro-life generation?” All essays should be postmarked no later than Saturday, January 23, 2016.

This is an excellent way to educate young people to the true meaning of abortion and how many lives are lost each year. With more than 3,300 abortions a day, many of their peers are not in their class room today because of abortion. It can help each individual pro-life student learn and understand not only what is at stake in abortion but how they can help.

There are two separate competitions. There is a Senior Essay Contest for grades 10 – 12; and a Junior Essay Contest for grades 7 – 9.

Essays will be read and judged on originality, content, and accuracy. The announcement of winners will be as soon as possible, but judging time depends on the numbers of entries received.

What follows is a brief “how-to” so that you know how to submit your essay properly.

The essay should be double spaced with pages numbered, between 300 to 500 words in length. The font must be no smaller than 12 pt.

Use a cover sheet that includes: full name, full address, phone number, grade level, student date of birth, parents’ name, and word count. All sources used must be cited and please do not include any artwork, pictures, or plastic covers.

All essays must be mailed to Michelle Fischbach, 14722 Old Lake Road, Paynesville, MN 56362.

Again, essays must be postmarked no later than January 23, 2016.

First place winners will receive $200, Second place winners will receive $150, and Third place winners will receive $100. Prizes are awarded for both the Junior and Senior contests.

The two first-place essays will appear in the National Right to Life Committee Yearbook and in National Right to Life News Today.

Vote Wednesday – Contact Your Representative

Happy New Year! Here’s your first chance to take pro-life action in 2016: Email your House Rep today and ask them to vote YES on the reconciliation bill that defunds Planned Parenthood.

As you know, both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives recently passed reconciliation legislation that stops taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood and re-directs their funding to entities that provide real health care for women.

YOUR calls and emails to Capitol Hill made these victories happen and here’s the next step: The House will vote this Wednesday on changes the Senate made to strengthen the bill.

TAKE ACTION NOW: Email your Rep today and tell them to support a reconciliation bill that includes defunding Planned Parenthood.

Fill out our simple form at the link to email your Representative today (All information on the form is required by Congressional servers to route your message to the correct office) and ask them to support defunding Planned Parenthood through reconciliation.

Thank you for moving on this so quickly. We must keep up the pressure.

Thanks again,
Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave Vice President for Government Affairs Susan B. Anthony List

P.S. Although the President’s veto is expected, this is not “just a show vote.”
The debate over the reconciliation process has continued the national conversation on Planned Parenthood, encouraging Americans to investigate for themselves the truth about Planned Parenthood’s abortion enterprise.

How Media Helps Push Us Off Suicide Cliff

How media helps push us off suicide cliff

<!– pat dup image remove attempt Wesley J. Smith End of remove dup image attempt –>By Wesley J. Smith

Wesley J. Smith

Wesley J. Smith

I’ve seen it again and again in my more than twenty years of opposing assisted suicide: the media promote suicide in the guise of reporting the news. Indeed, these days, it is almost a universal rule.

Here’s the biased–both by what is reported and what isn’t–usual pattern:

1. Make sure the headline promotes assisted suicide, particularly important since many won’t read the story;

2. Introduce an ill person with terrifying disease–often ALS (motor neurone disease), the bloody flag of the euthanasia movement;

3. The patient just wants to die when a “line” is crossed;

4. But mean society won’t let doctors prescribe death, so he has to die in a way he would rather not (take your pick) violently, with his family absent, in Switzerland, in agony, etc.;

5. If the law would only permit doctor-prescribed suicide, he could die at home, in his own bed, surrounded by the things and people he loves;

6. Write the story as if it appears or implies that the suicide is a necessity;

7. Never mention suicide prevention and how people similarly situated were helped not to kill themselves and are glad to be alive;

8. Don’t fairly present opposing arguments, e.g., no quotes, or quotes from a priest only, no (or barely a mention of) reasons to keep assisted suicide illegal;

9. Immediately have the suicidal hero–or a “compassionate” family doctor–slap down the concern;

10. Don’t describe the horrors of Belgium, the Netherlands, or Switzerland–oft discussed here;

11. Assure that assisted suicide guidelines will prevent abuse–without noting it hasn’t worked out that way wherever society widely embraces euthanasia consciousness.

Et voila! You have a story in which the reader is left nodding, “Of COURSE the law should be changed so he could die as he pleases.”

Read this story in the Bristol Post, and you see the pattern played almost to a tee in all its propagandistic reader manipulation:

1.Pro allow the suicide headline:

“Beethoven and Bordeaux, not Beatles and beards for my dying wishes, says ex-Bristol head”

2. Suicidal person with terrifying disease:

“Former schools inspector Chris Woodhead has revealed that he has planned his final moments in his battle with the progressive disease which has left him quadriplegic and unable to feed himself since his diagnosis in 2006.”

3. Wants to die when line crossed:

“A former Bristol teacher and head of Ofsted says he wants to die when motor neurone disease deprives him of his ability to speak.”

4. “Has” to die in way he doesn’t want:

“Bristol University graduate Mr. Woodhead, a former head of English at Gordano School in Portishead, previously stated in 2011 that he might be willing to go to Dignitas, an assisted suicide centre in Switzerland, to die.”

5. Would rather die at home with what he loves:

“…he said he would not be going to the clinic to end his life alongside ‘bearded social workers,’ and would much prefer to live his final moments with his loved ones, listening to Beethoven’s later quartets with a bottle of Bordeaux.”

6. Suicide a necessity: Implied in this case as the story says zero about what can be done to ensure comfort or alleviate the impact.  For example, this story never mentions technology that facilitates communication, e.g., as used by Stephen Hawking, if the patient loses the ability to speak.

7. Other options not mentioned: The story does not interview a suicide prevention expert or hospice professional who works to help people with ALS keep on keeping on. The medical director of St. Christopher’s Hospice could have given the reporter an earful of such hopeful examples.

8. No meaningful opposition allowed. Here’s the only sentence involving the reasons not to legalize assisted suicide:

But it has concerned critics who are worried it may be open for abuse.

9. Slapdown!

“Mr. Woodhead said he didn’t ‘buy for one moment that we are going to see all sorts of vulnerable people bumped off by their avaricious relatives.’”

10. Don’t mention horrors elsewhere already documented abundantly. Check

11. Guidelines will prevent abuse!

He said: “It seems to me obvious that society can build necessary safeguards to guard people and that people are a making huge song and dance about something which is quite simple.”

Of course, it isn’t nearly that simple.

And once assisted suicide was allowed for ALS patients, the same pattern would apply to people with disabilities, chronic diseases, mental illnesses, etc. Because legalized assisted suicide for the terminally ill would not stop trips to Switzerland to be made dead by the non terminally ill–already occurring

But why do a balanced job? That takes work. And insight. And objectivity. And professionalism.

Editor’s note. This appeared on Wesley’s great blog.

Planned Parenthood Employee Quits After Witnessing Horrific Abortion

Planned Parenthood employee quits after witnessing horrific abortion

Sarah Terzo

January 5, 2016 (LiveActionNews) — In November of 2014, a woman who identified herself only as Hope told her story of witnessing what sounds like a D&E abortion at Planned Parenthood. She was a sign language interpreter, and was hired by Planned Parenthood to communicate with deaf patients.

At first she only translated for patients who were having ultrasounds, but later she was called upon to interpret for a woman having an abortion.

The procedure described by Hope sounds like a D&E, the most common late-term abortion method. Here is a chart of a D&E operation. You can see that the procedure shown looks like the one that Hope describes. The abortionist reaches in with forceps and tears the baby apart, limb from torso.

Image

What Hope saw would lead her to resign immediately. She says:

At 10:30 sharp, we entered the operating room. That’s when my stomach started to turn. Previously, when I’d read “medical procedure,” it had been for ultrasounds. But this was different – we were in an OR. The lights were too bright for the size of the room. There were cold-looking metal objects on a table. I was in an abortion.

I tried to remain calm. I interpreted back and forth, but when the murder began, I lost it. As I watched the doctor pull this life out, limb by limb, I couldn’t help but let the tears start to fall. What I had thought would be just lumps of blood clots were body parts. Arms, a torso, legs, and a head. I felt as if I was suffocating. As soon as it was over, I ran from the room. I collapsed in the hallway and sobbed uncontrollably. To this day, I haven’t cried like that since. A security guard rushed me into his office. I realize now that it was probably not to console me, but because I was scaring the patients.

I quit my job that afternoon. I went into the manager’s office and signed my papers. Abortion was not a strong enough word for what I had witnessed. Murder wasn’t even good enough a word. To me, murder implied that the person might have been capable of fighting back. No, this was a slaughter.

I don’t think I will ever fully recover from what I saw that day.

Here is how Planned Parenthood describes a D&E abortion on their website:

Your health care provider will examine you and check your uterus. You will get medication for pain. You may be offered sedation or IV medication to make you more comfortable….

Medical instruments and a suction machine gently empty your uterus

A D&E usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes

According to Planned Parenthood, all Hope saw was a uterus being gently emptied by medical instruments – not a baby being torn apart and dismembered.

Click “like” if you are PRO-LIFE!

Keep in mind that the description on Planned Parenthood’s website is meant to educate Planned Parenthood’s pro-choice followers as well as inform possible abortion patients. Perhaps Planned Parenthood knows that if they are honest about what goes on in a late-term abortion, many people will be horrified enough to abandon their pro-choice activism or even switch sides. And the pregnant women,  of course, might have second thoughts about having this type of abortion.

Once again, the reality of what goes on in Planned Parenthood is far different than what they present to the public.
