A Look Inside The Womb: Parents Share Moving Video of 18-week-old Babies During In Utero Surgery

A look inside the womb: Parents share moving video of 18-week-old babies during in utero surgery

By Nancy Flanders

twinsinwombSharon and her husband were thrilled to be expecting identical twin girls, but at 17 weeks gestation, they received news that no parent wants to hear.

“We found out that they had twin to twin transfusion. We did an extensive ultrasound and that’s when we found out it was quite serious,” explained Sharon.

Twin to twin transfusion syndrome is a disease of the placenta in pregnancies of identical twins, in which the babies share a placenta.

“It’s a very dangerous condition in which the placenta basically malfunctions causing one baby to ‘donate’ her nutrients and blood to the other baby through the shared placenta, causing one baby to become anemic and malnourished, and the other baby’s heart to work very hard to cope with the extra blood,” explained Sharon. “Both of my girls were in danger of dying.”

Twin to twin transfusion can occur at any time throughout the pregnancy, but the cases that occur before 26 weeks – like with Sharon and her babies – are at higher risk of complications, including death, because they are subjected to the effects of twin to twin transfusion for a longer period of time. Without treatments, the twins would more than likely not survive. Sharon was told they might also live, but be born with disabilities.

Doctors told Sharon and her husband that they had four options. One was an amnio [centesis] fluid reduction which was not a viable option because of the risk of preterm labor. The next choice was to “terminate” Baby B, the donor twin, in order to give the other twin a better chance. The third option was to “terminate” both of the babies. The final option was to try an intrauterine laser surgery on the twins while they remained in the womb.

The couple knew that abortion was not the answer and chose the laser surgery, which has about a 60% chance of success in saving both twins.

“It was a no brainer for us,” said Sharon. “We wanted our babies.”

The surgery involves using a laser on the blood vessels located on the surface of the placenta which connects the two babies. The laser would make the shared placenta work as two placentas, allowing Baby B to receive nutrients and grow.

[At the time of the surgery]The girls were now 18 weeks, and their surgery lasted three hours. It involved numbing and cutting part of Sharon’s stomach and inserting a scope. She was awake and was able to watch part of the surgery with special glasses with a screen in them.

Sharon watched as her baby girls were put under anesthesia. The babies soon fell asleep. Sharon fell asleep, too, from the pain medication she was given.

“After the surgery, the doctor was really confident that it went well,” said Sharon. “He didn’t say maybe. He said they were going to be fine.”

But even with that reassurance, the couple was nervous. They wouldn’t be able to find out for sure if the surgery was a success until the next morning. Sharon was on strict bed rest in her hospital room and was unable to receive the ultrasound that would tell them what they so desperately wanted to know.

“They came and got me and did an ultrasound the next morning to make sure the babies were still alive, and then to check if the donor baby had a visible bladder, which would mean that the surgery was a success and she was actually getting nutrients in her body,” said Sharon.

Thankfully, the surgery was successful. Both babies were alive, and Baby B was finally getting the nutrients she needed.

“I was so relieved and just so excited to see little heart beats on the screen. I don’t think I actually remembered much else after that,” Sharon explained. “At that point I was confident they were going to be okay.”

Doctors continued to monitor Sharon and the twins carefully because of the concern of preterm labor. With each milestone they reached, 22 weeks, 27 weeks, and then 30 weeks, it became clear that the twins were going to make it to full term. They were born via C-section at 37 weeks.

Baby A, the recipient baby, was born completely healthy with some minor trouble breathing. She weighed over five pounds. Baby B, the donor baby, weighed four pounds and was smaller than anyone thought she would be. She wasn’t eating well and continued to experience an abnormal heart rate while she was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She remained there for three weeks until she was declared healthy enough to go home. She has been perfectly healthy ever since.

The girls are now four years old and doing well. Their parents are sharing their story along with a portion of the surgery video in hopes of showing others just how precious life is, even before birth.

“It was difficult for me to share it. It’s been personal for me,” explained Sharon. “It was a very hard time in our lives, but I just felt that you can clearly see that they’re little human beings and that they are perfectly formed. They’ve got little noses, little hands, little toes. We felt that if just one mom could see it who was contemplating abortion – and if she saw that she was actually carrying a miracle – that she would change her mind, and decide to keep the baby or just let it live.”

Sharon wants to show other parents, even those facing such a diagnosis for their preborn child or children, that there’s always hope, and that parents should always do whatever they can to save their babies.

“Babies can come out on the other side healthy and full of life, and [parents] should try their hardest to save them,” she said.

Super Bowl Ad Finalist Humanizes Unborn Child With Humor And Delightful Twist

NRL News Today

Super Bowl ad finalist humanizes unborn child with humor and delightful twist

By Dave Andrusko

DoritosUltrasound16Inadvertently or by design, ads aired during the Super Bowl occasionally carry powerful pro-life messages. Humor is the mainstay of these ads which cost a large fortune. And as is often the case, humor can humanize the unborn child in clever and subtle ways.

Take this proposed Doritos ad that may run at the 50th Super Bowl February 7. PepsiCo, the parent company, has run what it calls the “Crash the Super Bowl” contest for a decade. It offers “anyone with an idea and a camera a chance at the big leagues by making their own 30-second spot,” according to AdWeek.

Enter “Ultrasound,” which is one of the three finalists, which you can watch at youtube.com.

Understand, this is not exactly “Citizen Kane,” but it is quite funny.

The scene is of the very pregnant mom, who is watching her baby, (about to be born any day) on the ultrasound. The dad, less enthralled than his wife, is chewing away on his bag of Doritos.

Understandably the mom is not overjoyed and voices her displeasure. Meanwhile you see the baby on the ultrasound reaching for the Doritos chip. Baby and dad play a game of reaching forth and pulling back, which causes the mom to toss one of the chips.

The camera flashes to the ultrasound image. We see the baby disappear–as in he/she is exiting to find that chip!

Mom yells, dad yells, ultrasound technician yells. Cute.

The ad is the brainstorm of Peter Carstairs from Perth, Australia. We learn the inspiration for the ad from the website.

Peter recently had his second child, Freddy, who’s now nine months old. When he was with his wife getting an ultrasound during the pregnancy, an idea popped into his head – wouldn’t it be funny to have a little fun in the hospital room, where everyone is supposed to remain poised, calm and collected. The baby in the ultrasound image is Freddy himself – of course with the help of a little camera magic.

Take a half-minute and watch Freddy make his acting debut at youtube.com.

Hearings Begin on Unborn Child Dignity Act

Hearings Begin on Unborn Child Dignity Act
Lawmakers Advocate Humane Treatment of Aborted Babies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE       CONTACT: Stephanie Ranade Krider
DATE: Wednesday, January 20, 2016     PHONE: 614-547-0099 ext. 309

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Today, the Ohio House Health and Aging Committee began hearings on legislation that would require that aborted fetal remains be treated humanely following an abortion. The Unborn Child Dignity Act (H.B. 419) requires that aborted children’s remains be either given earthly burial or cremation. The second part is Unborn Dignity Informed Consent (H.B. 417), which increases informed consent by requiring full disclosure to women pursuing abortions of their options for the aborted baby’s treatment. Bill sponsors Representatives Barbara Sears (R-Monclova Township), Tim Ginter (R-Salem), Robert McColley (R-Napoleon) and Kyle Koehler (R-Springfield) provided testimony in favor of the bills.”As we mark the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade this week, we thank our bill sponsors for speaking on behalf of the millions of children who’ve lost their lives to abortion,” said Stephanie Ranade Krider, executive director of Ohio Right to Life. “In the last year we’ve learned not only that Planned Parenthood is trading aborted babies’ hearts, livers, and lungs, but that they’re sending them to landfills as well. By reclaiming it from the dumpster, Ohio Right to Life is intent on restoring the dignity of the unborn child.”

In December, Attorney General Mike DeWine announced the findings of his investigation into Planned Parenthood’s abortion practice in Ohio. The investigation, which began in July, revealed Planned Parenthood to be sending aborted fetal remains to landfills. Previously, other Planned Parenthood locations were exposed for trading aborted fetal remains.

“The Unborn Child Dignity Act and the Unborn Dignity Informed Consent Act are humane responses to a tragic and gruesome story,” said Krider.  “Even those who identify as ‘pro-choice’ could surely agree that a landfill is no place for an unborn child’s remains. Ohio’s women and their babies deserve much better than landfills.”

January 22 marks the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade which invalidated abortion regulations in all 50 states. Hundreds of thousands of pro-life Americans are expected to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C. this Friday. To find events in Ohio, click here.

Knights of Columbus Poll shows Strong Pro-Life Majority, Overwhelming Opposition to Tax-Funded Abortions and Support to Ban Abortions after 20 Weeks

Knights of Columbus poll shows strong pro-life majority, overwhelming opposition to tax-funded abortions and support to ban abortions after 20 weeks

Each year, right around the time of annual March for Life, the Knights of Columbus releases the results of a poll on abortion conducted for the KOC by The Marist Institute for Public Opinion. The KOC asks slightly different questions which help the average citizen get a much more accurate sense for where the American public is on various dimensions of the abortion issue. And that most definitely includes a truth often hidden: there are commonsense limitations a sizeable minority of pro-choicers can and will agree with.

Released today, the latest survey of 1,686 adults was conducted Nov. 15-22, 2015. And because the survey is so large, the margin of error is small: +/- 2.4 percentage points. What follows are five highlights. (The poll can be read in its entirety here.)

#1. Before getting into specific types of legislation, note that the KOC/Marist poll found far more Americans–55% to 30%– say that abortion ultimately does a woman more harm than good. Among those who identify as pro-choice, 27 percent share this view.

Likewise on the issue of whether abortion is “morally wrong”: overall 60% agree it is morally wrong (including 61% of women) as do a third (33%) of pro-choicers.

#3. What about tax payer funding of abortion and laws such as the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which ban abortions on babies old enough to experience horrific pain when aborted–20 weeks, if not earlier?

Whereas pro-abortion Hillary Clinton assures the Abortion Established she wants to abolish the Hyde Amendment, “nearly 7 in 10 Americans (68 percent), including 69 percent of women, oppose taxpayer funding of abortion,” according to the summary of the KOC poll. “This includes 51 percent of those who consider themselves pro-choice. Fewer than 3 in 10 Americans (29 percent) support it.”

In addition, “more than 6 in 10 Americans (61 percent), including 60 percent of women, support laws that would ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, except to save the life of the mother. “ Significantly, “The percentage was the same for pro-choice supporters (62 percent).”

#4. A total of 57 % of the 1,686 adults 18 and older would allow abortion only in instances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother (32%); only to save the life of the mother (13%); or not at all (12%).

Another 24% would allow abortion only during the first three months–making for an overall total of 81%. And

#5. “Additionally, 77 percent of Americans, including 79 percent of women and 71 percent of ‘pro-choice’ supporters, say that laws can protect both a mother and her unborn child.”

“Year in and year out since we began polling on this issue, the American people have understood that the law can protect mother and child alike and have expressed a strong consensus in favor of abortion restrictions,” said Knights of Columbus CEO Carl Anderson. “It is time for a new national conversation on abortion — one that begins with this consensus in favor of restrictions: a consensus that American women and men have already reached, and that includes a majority even of those who call themselves pro-choice.”

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D. is President & CEO of Americans United for Life (AUL)

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D. is President & CEO of Americans United for Life (AUL), the legal architects of the pro-life movement. AUL’s legal strategists have been involved in every life-related case before the United States Supreme Court beginning with Roe v. Wade. AUL is the pioneer of the state-based model legislative strategy, which has increased exponentially with significant victories in the past few years. AUL’s legal strategy works both to save the lives of the unborn, while also confronting the so-called “reliance” interest adopted by the Supreme Court in Planned Parenthood v. Casey: the false idea that women “rely” on abortion to succeed in American society.

Under Dr. Yoest’s leadership, AUL has pursued and refined a unique mother-child strategy that looks at the interests and vulnerabilities of both, protecting them from abortion industry abuses. According to the New York Times, “Taken together, these new state laws are hugely effective…” With such a track record, the Christian Science Monitor observed that some abortion advocates consider her “Public Enemy Number One” … but with a style all her own.

“This mother of five…has set the stage for sweeping antiabortion victories at the state level on the strength of her seeming candor, warmth, and camera-ready smile,” noted CSM, calling her “pro-life’s kinder, gentler face” and that “she represents the changing face of the antiabortion movement.”

Similarly, a profile piece featured in the New York Times magazine, described a “deft reframing of the abortion debate that has put Yoest at the center of anti-abortion politics and enabled her to help push through the greatest number of abortion restrictions since the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.”

Her approach is exemplified in AUL’s Women’s Protection Project, a cutting-edge package of legislation, found in AUL’s Defending Life, known as the legislative “playbook” for office holders. This followed up Dr. Yoest’s coordination of AUL’s explosive exposé in July 2011, “The Case for Investigating Planned Parenthood,” which documents known and alleged abuses occurring behind the closed doors of the nation’s largest abortion provider, an effort that resulted in a Congressional investigation.

Dr. Yoest was called to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominees Judge Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. Dr. Yoest has also provided Congressional testimony on other occasions before both the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as before state legislative bodies.

Dr. Yoest began her career in the White House during the Reagan Administration and served as a Senior Advisor to the 2008 Huckabee for President Campaign, after leading as Vice President of Communications at Family Research Council, one of the largest pro-family public policy organizations in the country. While there she edited and co-authored FRC’s “Free to be Family” report, a compendium detailing data on family breakdown.

On announcing her appointment, Governor Huckabee observed that Dr. Yoest “brings with her an in-depth knowledge of the issues and policy expertise, as well as over two decades of experience in the conservative movement.”

A regular political commentator, Dr. Yoest has appeared on all of the major networks and cable outlets. She is also the co-author of Mother in the Middle, an examination of childcare policy, published by HarperCollins, and is currently working on a second book related to modern feminism, with the working title, Women Alone.

Previously, Dr. Yoest served as the Project Director of the Family, Gender and Tenure Project at the University of Virginia, a nationwide study funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. She was also a recipient of Mellon, Olin, Bradley, and Kohler Fellowships.

Dr. Yoest has a Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Virginia. She and her husband, Jack, live with their five children in the Washington, DC area.

America has a new top pro-life state: Leading legal group

Dustin Siggins Dustin Siggins Follow Dustin

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 19, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – Louisiana is no longer America’s top pro-life state, according to an annual report from a top pro-life group.

In its annual “Life List,” Americans United for Life (AUL) named Oklahoma as America’s top state for its protections of women and the unborn. Oklahoma was also named in the “All Star” list, along with Arkansas and Texas, for enacting and promoting pro-life laws of high priority to AUL.

“The momentum for creating a culture that respects life in the law increases each year, empowered with tools such as Americans United for Life’s model legislation, constitutionally sound and deliberately crafted to protect women and their unborn infants from a predatory abortion industry,” said AUL president Dr. Charmaine Yoest. “This is a historic time for life. More life-affirming and protective state laws have been enacted since 2010 than in any similar period since Roe v. Wade, and AUL has been involved in nearly one third of the abortion-related measures enacted over the last six years.”

Rounding out the top 10 pro-life states, in descending order, were Kansas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, Indiana, North Dakota, Missouri, and Texas. Filling out the worst 10 states were Washington – which was at the bottom for the seventh year in a row – Vermont, New Jersey, California, Oregon, Nevada, New York, Hawaii, Connecticut, and Wyoming.

Louisiana had topped the list for six years in a row.

The annual rankings combine pro-life victories in the states since the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision and the previous year’s pro-life victories.

Ohio Right to Life PAC Announces 2016 Primary Endorsements

Ohio Right to Life PAC Announces 2016 Primary Endorsements
Leading Pro-life Advocacy Group Eyes Values Voter Turnout

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE       CONTACT: Katherine Franklin
DATE: Tuesday, January 19, 2016     PHONE: 614-547-0099 ext. 304

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Today, the Ohio Right to Life PAC announced its endorsements for the Ohio Primary Election on March 15, 2016.

“The March 2016 primary is critical for Ohio’s pro-life movement as we must retain, advance and promote those candidates for office who best exemplify our life-saving mission,” said Stephanie Ranade Krider, executive director of Ohio Right to Life. “After weeks of screening and interviewing candidates, the Ohio Right to Life PAC strongly encourages pro-life Ohio to vote for these men and women. Following seven years of pro-abortion activism from President Obama, every pro-life Ohioan should be moved to the polls and vote pro-life on March 15.”

In 2016, the Ohio Right to Life PAC will work with national organizations, including National Right to Life and Susan B. Anthony List, to advocate for pro-life candidates at the grassroots level and urge value voter turnout. In 2014, 79 percent of Ohio Right to Life PAC endorsed candidates won their races. In head-to-head races against Planned Parenthood endorsed candidates, 85 percent of the Ohio Right to Life endorsed candidates won their races.

“Pro-life momentum is on our side and we are clearly winning the battle in Ohio,” said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life.  “More babies are alive today and fewer abortion mills exist due in large part to our legislative leaders and Governor. Since 2010, Ohio has enacted 16 new pro-life laws, including the Late-Term Abortion Ban, and abortions are down 25 percent. With yet more pro-life initiatives in the works, Ohio Right to Life PAC urges every Ohioan to elect these pro-life leaders who will continue to enhance Ohio’s protections for mothers and their babies.”

As the state affiliate of National Right to Life, Ohio Right to Life cannot issue an endorsement for President until National Right to Life has issued an endorsement. Ohio Right to Life President Mike Gonidakis is a member of the Board of Trustees for National Right to Life and will participate in that process.

Notable endorsed candidates include:

U.S. Senator Rob Portman
Judge Pat Fischer – Ohio Supreme Court (Recommended)
