Ohio Right to Life Markets Alternatives to Planned Parenthood

Campaign Highlights Over 600 Free and Low-Cost Health Care Alternatives

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Today, Ohio Right to Life launched a communications campaign to highlight Ohio’s more than 600 free and low-cost health care providers. This campaign follows last summer’s passage of Ohio Right to Life legislation which stripped family planning funding from abortion provider, Planned Parenthood.

“The pro-choice myth tells us that without Planned Parenthood, women will have nowhere to go for health care,” said Katherine McCann, Public Relations Manager at Ohio Right to Life. “The abortion industry will promote this lie in order to give the impression that it somehow has a monopoly on women’s health care. The truth is, women have hundreds of places they can visit for free and low-cost care.”

In 2011, Community Health Centers at Ohio’s 200 locations served half a million people, which is five times the number of women Planned Parenthood claimed to serve. Other providers that Ohio Right to Life highlights include Community Action Agencies, free clinics, local health departments and statewide hospitals. Along with launching a video on its YouTube channel, the pro-life organization delivered post-cards advertising these alternatives to Ohio’s state representatives and senators.

The campaign’s launch coincides with the recent introduction of concurrent resolutions honoring Ohio’s 125 pregnancy help centers in both the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate. “Along with pregnancy help centers, these free and low-cost alternatives actually offer women more than 700 health care and pregnancy support resources,” said Kayla Smith, Director of Legislative Affairs. “A humane society would champion these resources before turning over another taxpayer dollar to the abortion industry giant.”

Pro-Life Caring, Pro-Life Compassion

Pro-Life Caring, Pro-Life Compassion

You have worth.  The people you care about have inestimable value.

Every human being has inestimable value.

If we lose sight of that great truth, our society will break down.  Protections we take for granted will disappear.  Life will become cheap.

In the throw-away culture that abortion advocates are so determined to create, every person does not have value.  In their world, the worth of an individual can be graded or ranked – high if you’re healthy or well-off; low if you’re not.

And if you’re on the bottom rung of worth as they see it – if you’re disabled, or dying, or “unwanted,” you can be killed.

Ancient Rome did that.  21st century America should not.

The Right to Life movement tackles these challenges to the value of life by working against abortion; by fighting to protect the lives of elderly and disabled persons threatened by euthanasia and “assisted suicide.”  We’re constantly looking for positive ways to build a Culture of Life.

In 2006, our Right to Life affiliate in Minnesota saw another threat to the value and dignity of the human being.  Children who were likely to be born with little or no chance of surviving for long – the very kind of vulnerable human being we should feel the most compassion for – were being aborted at terribly high rates.

It must be a devastating thing to be told your unborn child might have a condition incompatible with sustaining life.  Sometimes, of course, the child survives and thrives despite the diagnosis.  But when these tragedies do occur, they are very real and painful to the families.  And often, the attending medical personnel recommend, or even pressure, the mother to abort.

In response to these tragedies, our state Right to Life affiliate worked with advocates, legislators, and NRLC, and passed an amendment to the state’s Woman’s Right to Know informed consent law to ensure parents would receive helpful information about public and private agencies and services that offer life-affirming hospice for these infants (called perinatal hospice), with palliative care, and counseling for the parents.

Armed with such support, the parents could partner with these agencies to help their children receive the love and nurturing they need and deserve.  Knowing this support is available in such a difficult circumstance, parents are far less likely to succumb to pressure to abort.

The program was a great success, and now that amendment is a model for other states, including Oklahoma, where our state Right to Life affiliate is working for passage of its own law, the Perinatal Hospice Bill, HB2685.

The least we should do when a family faces the heartbreak of such a diagnosis is provide them information about the positive alternative of perinatal hospice, palliative care, and family counseling.

Intentionally taking the child’s life is no answer – any more than killing any other individual with a disability would be justified. “Perfection” is something none of us can claim, and using “quality control” as grounds for aborting a baby is unworthy of a society that respects the sanctity of each innocent human life.

There are many effective ways we can fight against the notion that some life can be deemed “disposable.”  Support for laws like this in states across the country is one such way.

Thank you!

Carol Tobias,
National Right to Life President

Abortion no help to poor women Your March 26 editorial “Danger and desperation” asserted that abortion rights should become a significant issue in the next election. At Ohio Right to Life, we agree, and echo the empathy that your editorial attempts to convey for the poor.

Nevertheless, your editorial exudes hypocrisy. In attempting to defend poor women, you also advance their likelihood to have an abortion.

The idea that abortion helps a poor woman is heartless. Rather than helping a woman become a self-sufficient mother who makes moral, nonviolent choices, the abortion industry and its advocates tell her simply to kill her child.

Poor women already have a disproportionate number of abortions. Women who live below the federal poverty line make up 14.5 percent of American women — but 40 percent of abortions are performed on them, according to Planned Parenthood’s research arm, the Guttmacher Institute.

America is no longer conducting a war on poverty, but is instead waging a discriminatory war on the poor, with abortion the primary weapon.

Your editorial attempted to highlight what you call the hypocrisy of small-government, pro-life Republicans. But the whole premise of the small-government philosophy is that government’s only legitimate purpose is to defend our basic freedoms — life, liberty, and happiness — against violence.

The real ideological fringe consists of pro-choice extremists who reject standards for abortion clinics, ignoring the fact that Center for Choice in Toledo shut down after health inspectors determined it violated health and safety standards with rusty and moldy equipment.

If Ohio backtracks and exposes our children to the brutality of the pro-choice, pro-discrimination philosophy, then we will face the danger and desperation of people who ignore science and reject morality in a world that uses force to accomplish its goals.

New York State’s Abortion Facilities are Inspected Less Often Than McDonald’s

New York state’s abortion facilities are inspected less often than McDonald’s

by Ben Johnson

Updated at 12:43 p.m. to include remarks from Lila Rose.

NEW YORK CITY, April 7, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A fast food restaurant in New York state is far more likely to be inspected for health and safety standards than an abortion facility, according to documents unearthed from a Freedom of Information Act request.

Since abortionists are not required by law to list “abortion services” as part of their description, the New York State Health Department regulates only 25 abortion facilities, of the state’s estimated 225 abortionists.

The pro-life Chiaroscuro Foundation received documents about the department’s inspection of abortion offices from 2000-2012 that show a level of neglect rivaling neighboring Pennsylvania before the Kermit Gosnell case.

The health department has inspected only 17 of the 25 abortion offices it oversees since 2000. Only eight of those were inspected more than once in a dozen years, allowing multi-year gaps between assessments.

However, every restaurant from Long Island to Buffalo is inspected annually to assure compliance with relevant health procedures.

In all, the state conducted 45 abortion facility inspections. During that time, there were 1,515,108 abortions reported statewide.

That means the state conducted one abortion facility inspection for every 33,669 abortions.

Greg Pfundstein, president of the Chiaroscuro Foundation, said he asked for the documents after being “horrified by the revelations in the trial of Kermit Gosnell.”

The Gosnell grand jury report stated, “With the change of administration from” pro-life Democratic Gov. Bob Casey to pro-abortion Republican Gov. Tom Ridge in 1995, “officials concluded that inspections would be ‘putting a barrier up to women’ seeking abortions.”

“We began to wonder whether any inspections were being done in New York,” Pfundstein said in a press release. “We are encouraged to know that some inspection is done in New York, but we can’t say on the basis of what the State has done over the last 13 years that anyone should be confident there is not a Kermit Gosnell at work somewhere in New York.”

Health regulators have closed only one abortion facility in 14 years. The Choices Women’s Medical Center located in Queens hired Dr. Allan Zarkin, who earned the nickname “Doctor Zorro” for carving his initials into a woman’s stomach at Beth Israel Medical Center in February 2000.

In Queens, Zarkin would sometimes perform an abortion every five minutes. Inspectors found his “surgery schedule does not allow time to assess patients prior to surgery, to monitor patients or to clean and prepare the room for the next patient.”

They also reported that one unnamed abortionist would perform abortions on two women in different operating rooms simultaneously.

The state levied a $60,000 fine against the facility, but allowed it to reopen. Zarkin was banned from medicine and ordered to receive psychological counseling in May 2000.

“These filthy killing centers maim mothers and destroy their babies for money, and the state does nothing,”  said Lila Rose, president of Live Action. “There is no excuse for this sort of negligence, especially in the wake of mass-murdering Kermit Gosnell in Pennsylvania and ‘Gosnell-like conditions’ at Planned Parenthood of Delaware. New York is being exposed once again as a partner in the full-throttle attack on the most basic of human rights.”

The state’s willingness to turn a blind eye to the abortion industry puts women at risk, the Chiaroscuro Foundation said.

“Women’s health is women’s health,” spokeswoman Molly O’Connor said. “Women deserve to know whether a clinic they are about to visit has been inspected and is in compliance with health regulations.”

Click “like” if you want to end abortion!

“Whether you are an abortion supporter or an abortion opponent, we should all stand firmly on the side of safety,” O’Connor said.

She challenged “NARAL and other abortion groups to join together with us in demanding answers from New York State.”

What a harrowing juxtaposition of realities in the same sentence. We’re told that Emily Cressey is believed to be Britain’s youngest surviving birth.

“Emily weighed 535g (1lb 3oz) when she was born on February 27, and could legally have been aborted,” reports Metro.co.uk.

When she was able to hold her for the first time on Mother’s Day (March 30), Emily’s mother Claire said it was “the best moment of my life.”.

And Emily is doing well at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, weighing in at 736g (1lb 10oz).

Ms. Cressey said Emily is so tiny she fits in the palm of her hand.

“I cried before the nurse brought her out, it was so emotional, I’ve never experienced anything like it before.

Mother of Jahi McMath still convinced “she will have a recovery”

<!– pat dup image remove attempt Nailah Winkfield, the mother of Jahi McMath End of remove dup image attempt –>

Nailah Winkfield, the mother of Jahi McMath

When last we posted on the condition of Jahi McMath, the family of the teenager whom doctors had diagnosed as brain dead had won the right to move her from Oakland Children’s Hospital to an undisclosed location where feeding and breathing tubes were successfully inserted into the 13-year-old Jahi.

At the time, Christopher Dolan, the family attorney, told reporters the family would not be talking for a while. That silence was not broken until last week when Jahi’s mother Nailah Winkfield, gave an exclusive interview with NBC Bay Area and NBC’s affiliate in Philadelphia.

Lisa Fernandez of NBC Bay Area began by quoting Winkfield.

“She’s still asleep.  I don’t use the word ‘brain dead’ for my daughter. I’m just waiting and faithful that she will have a recovery. She is blossoming into a teenager before my eyes.”

For those coming late to the story, Jahi has been on a ventilator since going into cardiac arrest following December 9 surgery to remove her tonsils and clear tissue from her nose and throat. Three days later she was diagnosed as brain-dead and the legal battle began in earnest when the hospital sought to remove Jahi from a ventilator over the family’s vigorous objections.

A truce was brokered in early January during a hearing before Alameda Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo, allowing Nailah Winkfield to remove her daughter from the hospital as long as she assumed full responsibility.

Hospital spokesman Sam Singer vigorously disagreed.

“We have done everything to assist the family of Jahi McMath in their quest to take the deceased body of their daughter to another medical facility,” he said three months ago. Singer told reporters that Dolan is “perpetuating a sad and tragic hoax on the public and the McMath family. Tragically, this young woman is dead, and there is no food, no medical procedures and no amount of time that will bring back the deceased.”

But Nailah Winkfield painted an entirely different picture of her daughter’s condition. She described Jahi as “very responsive.” Fernandez wrote that Winkfield said her daughter is “now moving her head side to side, something she hadn’t done before.”

Jahi, who is undergoing physical therapy, can bend at the waist and turn over in bed, according to her mother.

“No matter how many times you position her to the right or in the middle, she always ends up on the left side,” Winkfield said. “She will reposition herself over and over if she is uncomfortable.”

But Winkfield did tell NBC Bay Area that her daughter “is unable to speak or squeeze her hand. Jahi is on a ventilator and is nourished through a feeding tube. Her mother gives her vitamins and fish oil herself ‘to feel useful,’” Fernandez wrote.

Fernandez solicited input from outside experts who suggested she not put too much weight into what Winkfield is saying. Fernandez wrote

“In a phone interview on Thursday from the University of Washington where he is head of pediatric neurology, Dr. Sidney Gospe said he couldn’t put a ‘whole lot of weight’ into what Jahi’s mother had to say about her movements without a neurological examination. ‘Someone with expertise would have to characterize those movements as either reflexes or something initiated by her cerebral cortex,’ he said. Gospe added that a ventilator has the ability to help maintain a patient’s vital signs.”

But, as you would imagine, Winkfield was not dissuaded. As a measure of her determination, she quit her job at Home Depot to sit by Jahi’s bedside and relatives are caring for her other three children—two daughters and a son. Fernandez ends her story by noting

“There are many who have criticized the family for keeping a brain-dead daughter on machines.

“Winkfield, however, is paying those critics no mind.

“She’s too focused on spending her days caring for Jahi, giving her a manicure and pedicure every Friday, like she did at home. On St. Patrick’s Day, she painted her daughter’s toes and nails green with black and silver tips.”

“Winkfield also pores over case studies on people who have come out of deep comas, and she spends long hours reading the pages of the Bible, looking for hope and wisdom.

“’Literally,’ Winkfield said. ‘That’s the only book I read.’”

After three miscarriages in a row, Angie Rodgers wasn’t expecting her next unborn child to survive to 40 weeks. But she had hope. So when doctors repeatedly told her to abort her baby, she knew the answer was no. She knew she needed to give her baby a chance at life.

At three months gestation, doctors discovered that Rodgers baby girl had a rare form of dwarfism. According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, Conradi-Hünermann syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by skeletal malformations, skin abnormalities, cataracts and short stature. The specific symptoms and severity varies greatly from one individual to the next. It occurs almost exclusively in girls.

According to ABC News, doctors informed Rodgers that her daughter would likely be deaf and that her scoliosis could impair her lung function. Doctors also said her daughter would likely never walk.

And when Grace Anna was born via C-section, she was quickly rushed away due to meconium aspiration, a life-threatening condition that occurs as a result of a baby inhaling her first stool during or before delivery. Rodgers told ABC News:

“I didn’t know if she would make it – they didn’t tell me anything. I never saw her for the first 12 hours and when I did, she had scales on three-quarters of her body. The only place with no scales were her face and butt. They fell off in three months.”

Now, three years later, Grace is an adorable internet sensation, singing for the world on You Tube and gaining over 200,000 likes on her Facebook page. It all started when her mother shared a video of her singing The Star Spangled Banner. That video has over 350,000 views. And Grace has been invited to sing at events including a veterans’ benefit.

Her sweet voice and face have brought joy to thousands. And while she hasn’t yet begun to walk, Grace’s mom knows that her daughter has overcome ever obstacle thrown her way, and they’ve learned to take the advice of doctors with a grain of salt.

Grace, a little girl whom doctors thought wasn’t worthy of life, is singing her way into America’s hearts and hearts around the world.

Editor’s note. Nancy is a work at home mom who writes about parenting, special needs children, and the right to life. She is the lucky mother of three spirited little girls, one who has cystic fibrosis, and she spends any free moment she can find fundraising for a cure for CF. This appeared at liveactionnews.org.

Amidst all the Debate Over Enrollment Numbers, We Can’t Forget Obama Knew of ObamaCare’s Massive Abortion Subsidies and Healthcare Rationing

Amidst all the debate over enrollment numbers, we can’t forget Obama knew of ObamaCare’s massive abortion subsidies and healthcare rationing

<!– pat dup image remove attempt Pro-abortion President Barack Obama End of remove dup image attempt –>

By Dave Andrusko

Pro-abortion President Barack Obama

Thanks go out to those kind readers who wrote me about “President’s Breathtakingly misleading celebration of ObamaCare.”  Those remarks were put together at the very end of the day, and I would like to add a few additional thoughts today.

When the President (choosing to ignore the obvious holes that undercut his contention) bragged that “7.1 million Americans have now signed up for private insurance plans through these [ObamaCare] marketplaces — 7.1,” it was taken as a signal for his supporters to follow the party line: debate/disagreement about ObamaCare was now old news.

If you think about that, it’s quite amazing. A long string of snafus, broken promises, frequent instances of backsliding, revisions, and extensions count for nothing: all’s well that ends well. To point out that we weren’t even close to the “end” was said to be sour grapes, an unwillingness to face reality: ObamaCare had succeeded.

Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan had an interesting response in a column titled “A Catastrophe Like No Other: The president tries to put a good face on ObamaCare.”

She began with a succinct summary of the “daily argument”:

“Seven point one million people have signed up!”

“But six million people lost their coverage and were forced onto the exchanges! That’s no triumph, it’s a manipulation. And how many of the 7.1 million have paid?”

“We can’t say, but 7.1 million is a big number and redeems the program.”

“Is it a real number?”

“Your lack of trust betrays a dark and conspiratorial right-wing mindset.”

Noonan could have added a litany of other problems and examples of misdirection in the President’s remarks besides this one we read later in the column:

“What the bill declared it would do—insure tens of millions of uninsured Americans—it has not done. There are still tens of millions uninsured Americans. On the other hand, it has terrorized millions who did have insurance and lost it, or who still have insurance and may lose it.

For instance, the President’s happy-talk presentation ignores that premiums are not going down, for most people, but up…substantially. At the same time deductibles are also increasing…substantially. There is every reason to believe the increases will be even larger next year.

Her larger point is this.

“Support it or not, you cannot look at ObamaCare and call it anything but a huge, historic mess. It is also utterly unique in the annals of American lawmaking and government administration.”

But it is crucial to remember that Obama and his administration and his congressional allies knew perfectly well that ObamaCare was a boon to the abortion industry. As NRLC has pointed out, when Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, an array of long-established laws, including the Hyde Amendment, had created a nearly uniform policy that federal programs did not pay for abortion or subsidize health plans that included coverage of abortion, with narrow exceptions. However, key provisions of the 2010 Obamacare health law sharply departed from that longstanding policy. Among other objectionable provisions, the Obamacare law authorized massive federal tax subsidies to assist many millions of Americans to purchase private health plans that will cover abortion on demand.

Likewise, they knew that rationing was built-in to ObamaCare.

“Obamacare authorizes Washington bureaucrats to create one uniform, national standard of care that is designed to limit what private citizens are allowed to spend to save their own lives,” explained Burke Balch, J.D., director of the Robert Powell Center for Medical Ethics. “We are convinced most Americans do not believe that the government should limit the right of Americans to use their own money for health care necessary to save their lives. Yet, that is exactly what Obamacare does.”

Beyond any discussion of the inflated claims for ObamaCare’s enrollment “success,” we must never forget that there are components that were deliberately built in to provide massive abortion subsidies and to ensure rationing of health care.

Paralyzed man with “no hope” for recovery unable to speak while doctors ask family about donating his organs

By Dave Andrusko

JimFritzeJim Fritze’s grief-stricken relatives came to Sahlgrenska Hospital to say their final goodbyes. Doctors said brains scans showed that the 43-year-old Fritze had “no hope” of pulling through.

“Doctors asked the family about the possibility of donating his organs when he died,” reported The Daily Mail’s Sara Malm, “not realising Mr. Fritze could also hear the conversation.”

The victim of a stroke, Fritze was unable to talk while the people surrounding his bed were discussing taking his organs!

He was saved because another doctor took a second look.

Malm reports that Fritze had suffered a brain hemorrhage two years before when out with his family. “’I managed to catch my girlfriend’s attention – I was bright red in the face, and she’s a nurse so she managed to keep my airways open,” he told Malm.

Unfortunately, because an air ambulance was unable to land on the Island where he had suffered his stroke, Fritze did not reach the Swedish hospital, by boat, for two hours.

“Only my ears and eyes were working,” Fritze said. “They (the doctors) told my girlfriend that there was no hope.”

Fortunately another doctor, who had returned from a holiday, looked at him three days later. “’She looked at my scans and said, ‘This doesn’t look too bad,’ and told the staff to give me cortisone to bring down the swelling in my brain,’” Fritze said.

But he was still unable to speak—that would take another three weeks. Now, two years later, he has recovered enough to take action against the hospital.

“If that doctor hadn’t come back from her holiday, would I have been made to lie there until my body couldn’t take it any longer?” Fritze asked in his complaint.

Sahlgrenska Hospital’s press spokesperson Stefan Sarajärvi said, ‘We are of course taking this complaint very seriously, as we do with all complaints.”

Fritze is now undergoing rehabilitation at Örebro hospital to regain full function in his limbs.
