We’re Beating Planned Parenthood – with 1/3 their Budget!

WOMEN SPEAK OUT

We’re Beating Planned Parenthood – with 1/3 their Budget!

We can move mountains with truth on our side and a fire in our hearts.

Our efforts to save innocent unborn babies by kicking out the pro-abortion Senators who abandon them are bearing tremendous fruit.

And Planned Parenthood doesn’t hold a candle to us.

Planned Parenthood is desperately trying to protect their murderous industry by defending their friends in the Senate who vote for abortion 100% of the time. For example, they’re pouring $3 million into re-electing North Carolina’s extremely pro-abortion Senator Kay Hagan. Planned Parenthood has used their massive budget to call 84,000 pro-abortion voters and knock on 8,000 doors, encouraging voters to vote for Sen. Hagan, who refuses to protect babies from abortion even at 20 weeks – 5 months – of pregnancy.

But we are on fire to save lives. With just 1/3 of their budget, our North Carolina team has called 244,598 pro-life voters and knocked on over TEN TIMES the doors Planned Parenthood has.

Our ground teams go door-to-door encouraging pro-lifers who usually don’t vote to vote this year!

>> Donate Now! With 1/3 of Planned Parenthood’s budget, we have TEN TIMES the results – so you know we’ll stretch every penny of your donation to save lives as effectively as possible.

And it works! Research has shown that when we tell voters about a candidate’s extreme abortion position, like supporting violent late abortions after 5 months of pregnancy when the baby can feel pain, voters switch from supporting the pro-abortion candidate to supporting the pro-life candidate.

We MUST keep beating Planned Parenthood’s election efforts. On November 4th, the voters we’ve reached across America could rise up as a pro-life army to kick out Planned Parenthood’s allies in the Senate, and vote in pro-life champions who will stand for the unborn and their mothers.

But pollsters are warning that a new influx of pro-abortion money is eating into our gains in several important Senate races. One of those is North Carolina, where Planned Parenthood’s friend Kay Hagan has raised $9 million compared to her strong pro-life opponent Thom Tillis, who has just $1.5 million. And Planned Parenthood and EMILY’s List are adding $3 million each to Kay Hagan’s $9 million to keep this 100% pro-abortion senator in Congress.

What can you do to defend life from the abortion lobby’s millions? Donate to Women Speak Out PAC to get 30X Planned Parenthood’s results per dollar.

Donate Now! With 1/3 of Planned Parenthood’s budget, we have TEN TIMES the results – so you know we’ll stretch every penny of your donation to save lives as effectively as possible.

Why Do People Turn a Blind Eye to 56 Million Aborted Babies?

Why Do People Turn a Blind Eye to 56 Million Aborted Babies?

By Micaiah Bilger, Education Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

Runborn-baby-2A few days ago, a retired doctor visited our office. As he talked with us, he wondered out loud about an aspect of the abortion issue that I puzzle over, too.

The issue was this: How can people be so distraught by horrible human rights abuses such as school shootings, persecution of religious groups, or discrimination against minorities – and yet turn a blind eye to the 56 million preborn babies who’ve been aborted? How can so many Americans sit by and do nothing to end the killing of preborn babies?

I’ve been thinking a lot about these questions, too. As I was mulling the questions, a thought came to me about how abortion is almost an invisible tragedy. So few people actually see the victim, the preborn baby, or have a relationship with him or her.

My point is that we connect more with people who we relate to. We are more likely to send a meal to the family down the street whose house burned down than we are to a family in Haiti who can’t even afford one meal a day.

It’s hard to relate to a preborn baby if you’re not his/her mother or father. Sometimes it may be hard to relate even when you are the mother or father. It doesn’t mean that preborn babies are less valuable. We just have a harder time relating to them.

So, how can we help people relate to preborn babies in the womb and open their eyes to the tragedy of abortion?

One way is just to remind them that abortions are happening. I think people honestly just forget sometimes. Share an article on your Facebook page or invite them to attend a pro-life event in your area.

Another way may be to share facts and photos about preborn babies. Every time I help at a fair booth, I see people’s amazed faces as they pick up our fetal models or look at the photos of tiny babies in the womb. When people see a baby at 12 weeks sucking their thumb or twins interacting in utero, they begin to relate to preborn babies.

These are just some of my thoughts and ideas about making people more aware about abortion

Simple Ideas for Communicating the Pro-Life Message to Children

Simple ideas for communicating the pro-life message to children

 By Kristi Burton Brown

HortonHearsAWhoBookCoverAs parents (or kids’ caretakers), we have the opportunity to build pro-life values into them from a young age. Of course, we can talk to them directly about the value of every life, explain things, and answer questions. One day we’ll have to explain exactly what abortion is to them.

But, there are also ways to reinforce pro-life values as we’re living everyday life. For instance, when a baby cries at the store, children are often naturally concerned – not annoyed like many adults are. Encourage that concern and tell children how important it is to care for everyone, especially when they’re helpless like those little babies. Love and compassion for others should always trump our selfish feelings.

Storytime is another prime opportunity to instill pro-life values in our children. In general, it’s important to be selective about which books we choose to read to our little ones. And with a little effort, we can find excellent stories that teach why every life matters.

Here are some pro-life values to look for in children’s books. It’s important to point out these values in the book and find fun ways to emphasize them.

  • Every life counts.
  • Every person is important – even if they’re small, untalented, or needy.
  • Stop to help others.
  • A person’s value isn’t based on what she can give to me.
  • Life isn’t all about me.
  • Family is important – every member has a place.
  • Children are a gift.
  • Unselfishness, compassion, and justice

Here are a few children’s books that can help teach pro-life values to children:

God Gave Us You by Lisa Tawn Bergren

“When we found out you were growing inside me, we were so happy! Even the angels were celebrating for us!” “Because of me?” asked Little Cub. “Yes, my darling child. Because God gave us you.”

If You Were My Bunny by Kate McMullan; Precious Moments: Mommy Loves Meby Alex Barad; I’d Choose You by John Trent; Just In Case You Ever Wonder by Max Lucado; and I Love You When by John Edward Hasse

These books demonstrate the love of a parent for a child, even when the child makes mistakes or is needy.

The Jingle Bell Ball by Jenny Arthur

This fun story shows that everyone has a place; everyone is needed!

Jesus Teaches Me Kindness, an Arch Books Gift Collection

This little collection teaches children the values of kindness, compassion, and giving to or sacrificing for others, despite the personal cost.

Bear’s New Friend by Karma Wilson

This book teaches children that people are worth making efforts for!

Little Polar Bear, Take Me Home! by Hans de Beer

“Don’t be scared, Sasha,” said Lars. “I’ve often been far away from home, and sometimes I got a bit lost too. But someone always helped me get back, and now I’ll help you.”

Yes We Can! by Sam McBratney

This book talks about valuing everyone for their own individuality instead of focusing on how you’re better than them.

Horton Hears a Who! by Dr. Seuss

“I’ll just have to save him. Because, after all, a person’s a person, no matter how small.”

What pro-life values do you look for in your children’s books? What are some of your favorites? Share other ideas you have, for teaching your children to be pro-life, in the comments below.

Over 1000 ObamaCare Plans Cover Abortions-on-Demand with YOUR Taxpayer Dollars

 WOMEN SPEAK OUT
Friend,

Yesterday a bombshell Government Accountability Office (GAO) report revealed that over 1000 ObamaCare plans cover abortions-on-demand with YOUR taxpayer dollars.

Pro-life Republican candidates for Congress leapt into action, calling out their pro-abortion opponents for voting in ObamaCare, the most massive expansion of taxpayer-funded abortion since Roe v. Wade.

But, as The Hill reported, Women Speak Out PAC “already launched a major offensive… in Louisiana, North Carolina and Arkansas” early this year to alert voters that their pro-abortion Senators abandoned Americans to a law that forces us to pay for others’ abortions.

>> Taxpayer funding of abortion is deeply unpopular with both pro-life and pro-choice Americans. So our team spreads a message that will move a majority of voters: kick out your Senator who voted to use your tax dollars to pay for abortions under Obamacare.

Remember why we do this:

  1. We inform voters that their Senators voted for ObamaCare, which forces them to pay for abortions-on-demand.
  2. Voters kick these Senators out of office and elect pro-life Senators.
  3. A pro-life Senate majority will finally pass life-saving pro-life bills that have been stuck in the Senate for years.
  4. Unborn children’s lives are saved.

Like what we’re doing? Donate Now to help us talk to more voters and and get more of this literature out – it saves lives!

We couldn’t do this without you – thank you for your prayers and donations!

ObamaCare is Forcing You to Pay for Abortion on Demand.

LIVE ACTION

a new media movement for life

Dear Friend,

It’s official (again): ObamaCare is forcing you to pay for abortion on demand.

The Government Accountability Office has released a report that shows just how accountable the Obama administration isn’t.  Despite the administration’s constant attempts to lie and cover up the abortion funding, the truth continues to emerge.  Not only are states completely flouting the weak and unenforceable restrictions rabid pro-abortion legislators halfheartedly allowed in the law, but in five states, there is not a single ObamaCare-compliant health insurance plan that doesn’t cover elective abortion.

Americans living in Connecticut, Hawaii, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont must fund the dismemberment and suctioning of helpless children if they’re to avoid punitive fines from the federal government.

This is an absolute outrage.  When I read about this report, I had to speak out on it:

Contrary to President Obama and his administration’s repeated lies that ACA does not fund killing children, the GAO report proves what we have known since even before this extremely unjust bill was forced upon taxpayers.  ObamaCare’s bankrolling of abortion industry leader Planned Parenthood and other abortion centers is the most lethal form of cronyism and political payoffs.  This so-called health care law is not actually about health care; rather, it’s about robbing taxpayers to stock Obama’s abortion ATM, to pay back Planned Parenthood and others in the abortion industry who helped get this tyrant re-elected.

Every year in the United States, there are millions of lives in danger of abortion. Having our government underwrite the killing of the child in the womb through a so-called “health-care” law is not only a human rights abuse against the weakest members of our society, but also a gross violation of the purpose of “health care” for both women and children.

I hope you’ll speak out, too.  One step is to sign the petition calling for the total defunding of Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry – and that includes complete defunding from ObamaCare. You can sign the petition here.

Together we demand an end to the tyrannical government funding of the most barbaric and heartbreaking human rights abuse of the day.

Overview of Fetal Development

NRL News Today

 September 15, 2014   Fetal Development

Overview of Fetal Development

By Sarah Terzo

Editor’s note. This appeared at clinicquotes.com.

Day 1: Sperm joins with ovum, to form one cell smaller than a grain of salt. The new life has inherited 23 chromosomes from each parent, 46 in all. This one cell contains the complex genetic blueprint for every detail of human development – the child’s sex, hair and eye color, height, skin tone

3-weeks

Days 3 – 4: The fertilized egg travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus, where the lining has been prepared for implantation

Days 5 – 9: During this time, the fertilized egg implants itself in the rich lining of the uterus and begins to draw nourishment.

Days 10 – 14: The developing embryo signals its presence through placental chemicals and hormones, preventing the mother from menstruating

Day 20: Foundations of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system are already established

Day 21: The heart begins to beat

Day 28: The back bone and muscles are forming. Arms, legs, eyes and ears have begun to show.

Day 30: At 1 month old, the embryo is 10,000 times larger than the original fertilized egg – and developing rapidly. The heart is pumping increasing quantities of blood through the circulatory system. The placenta forms a unique barrier that keeps the mother’s blood separate while allowing food and oxygen to pass through to the embryo.

day 37-40

Day 35:5 Fingers can be discerned on the hand. The eyes darken as pigment is produced.

Day 40: Brain waves can be detected and recorded

Week 6

Week 6: The liver is now taking over the production of blood cells, and the brain begins to control movement of muscles and organs. The mother is about to miss her 2nd period and has probably confirmed that she is pregnant.

Week 7: The embryo begins to move spontaneously. The jaw forms, including teeth buds in the gums. Soon the eyelids will seal to protect the embryo’s developing light-sensitive eyes, and will reopen at about the 7th month

week 7

Week 8: At a little more than an inch long, the developing life is now called a fetus – Latin for “young one” or “offspring.” Everything is now present that will be found in a fully developed adult. The heart has been beating for more than a month, the stomach produces digestive juices and the kidneys have begun to function. 40 muscle sets begin to operate in conjunction with the nervous system. The fetus’s body responds to touch, although the mother will not be able to feel movement until the 4th or 5th month.

8wks2d-footWeek 9: Fingerprints are already evident in the skin. The fetus will curl its fingers around an object placed in the palm of its hand.

Week 10: The uterus has now doubled in size. The fetus can squint, swallow and wrinkle its forehead.

9-to-10-weeks

10-weeks

Week 11: At this time, the fetus is about 2 inches long. Urination occurs. The face has assumed a baby’s profile, and muscle movements are becoming more coordinated

Week 12

Week 12: The fetus now sleeps, awakens and exercises its muscles energetically – turning its head, curling its toes, and opening and closing its mouth. The palm, when stroked, will make a tight fist. The fetus breathes amniotic fluid to help develop its respiratory system.

Week13: Fine hair has begun to grow on the head, and sexual differentiation has become apparent

14 weeks

Month 4: By the end of this month, the fetus is 8 to 10 inches in length and weighs a half pound or more. The mother will probably start to “show” now. The ears are functioning, and there is evidence that the fetus hears quite a bit: the mother’s voice and heartbeat as well as external noises. The umbilical cord has become an engineering marvel, transporting 300 quarts of fluids per day and completing the round-trip of fluids every 30 seconds.

Week 16- 4th month

Month 5: Half the pregnancy has now passed, and the fetus is about 12 inches long. The mother has definitely begun to feel movement by now. If a sound is especially loud or startling, the fetus may jump in reaction to it

Week 20 (5th month)

Month 6: Oil and sweat glands are functioning. The delicate skin of the growing baby is protected from the fetal waters by a special ointment called “vernix.” If the baby were born in this month and given the proper care, he would survive.

Month 7

Month 7: The baby now uses the 4 senses of vision, hearing, taste and touch. He can recognize his mother’s voice.

Month 8: The skin begins to thicken, with a layer of fat stored underneath for insulation and nourishment. Antibodies increasingly build up. The baby absorbs a gallon of amniotic fluid per day; the fluid is completely replaced every 3 hours.

Month 8

Month 9: Toward the end of this month, the baby is ready for birth. The average duration of pregnancy is 280 days from the 1st day of the mother’s last menstrual period, but this varies. Most babies (85% to 95%) are born somewhere between 266 and 294 days. By this time the infant normally weighs 6 to 9 pounds and his heart is pumping 300 gallons of blood per day. He is fully capable of life outside the womb.

A Gorgeous 4 Minute Video Journey from Infancy to Old Age

A gorgeous 4 minute video journey from infancy to old age

 By Dave Andrusko

Coming full circle: The artist skillfully demonstrates the poignancy of growing older in the four-minute video.

As we have observed dozens and dozens of times, arguably the best way to reach the undecided is to show them the marvelous complexity of the unborn child through her developmental journey and how what you see at fertilization is not only the same baby you will hold in your hands nine months later but also the same human being as she approaches the end of a long life.

(For me, I am still trying to find the video I saw decades ago that went from a very old person who “aged” in reverse, back to the union of ovum and sperm.)

The Daily Mail, bless its institutional heart, ran a piece today about the Korean artist and illustrator Seok Jeong Hyeon (better known as Stonehouse) which linked to a time-lapse video that traced a woman’s life from infancy to very old age, then finishing by flashing back to the drawing of a infant.

There are no words—none are needed–only gentle background music. Your eyes are riveted to this very brief (four minutes) tour of one person’s life.

Subtlety is the hallmark of this tour de force. The slightest changes, accumulating over time…

I couldn’t help thinking of our grandson who is not quite ten months old. The changes in him in just the last month are astonishing. He is almost unrecognizable from the baby we toted around just three months ago.

At the end, we see the proud grandmotherly figure, her eyes closed, her hands clasped as if in prayer. Then an abrupt reversal and we are transported back in time to this same woman when she was an infant, eyes closed, left hand almost posed under chin.

Take five minutes and go to dailymail.co.uk.

America Must Acknowledge its Own Eugenics Problem

Featured ImageShutterstock.com

 ,

America must acknowledge its own eugenics problem

 By Eric Metaxas
A few weeks ago, Germany dedicated a memorial to Nazism’s first victims: the disabled. The people of Germany have come to terms with their past.

The question now is, When will we?

The 80-foot glass panel unveiled in Berlin’s Tiergarten memorializes the estimated 70,000 sick and disabled people killed by the Third Reich as part of what was officially called Aktion T4 (and more informally, “Gnadentod,” which is German for “mercy death.”)

There was nothing merciful about it. Between 1939 and 1941, more than 5,000 children deemed “defective” were killed.

The program was expanded to include adults whose disabilities rendered them, in arguably the most demonic phrase ever uttered by man, lebensunwertes Leben, “life unworthy of life.” “Worth” was most often described in economic terms: a propaganda poster told ordinary Germans that caring for someone with “hereditary defects” cost 60,000 Reichsmarks, which came from ordinary Germans’ pockets.

There was opposition to the program, most notably from the Bishop of Münster, who denounced the program saying that “It is a terrible, unjust and catastrophic thing when man opposes his will to the will of God” and rhetorically asked if being poor and unproductive meant “that they have lost their right to live?”

Now, before you file this away under the headings “ancient history” and “The Nazis were one of a kind,” there are two things you need to know: the Nazis learned from us, and the worldview that drove them is not ancient history.

As Edwin Black, the author of “War Against the Weak” has documented, the ideas that led to Aktion T4 “began on Long Island and ended at Auschwitz . . . and yet never really stopped.”

Click “like” if you are PRO-LIFE!

By “Long Island” he means the Cold Spring Harbor Lab right here in New York, which was the driving force behind the eugenics movement in the United States. Between the turn of the twentieth century and our entry into World War II, America engaged in its own experiment in “racial hygiene.”

States prohibited marriage between the “fit” and “unfit,” often defining the latter category very broadly. They forcibly sterilized tens of thousands of people with the Supreme Court’s blessing. The number of those affected by what Chuck Colson once dubbed “Yankee Doodle Eugenics” will never be known with any certainty.

What is certain is that, by the time Hitler came to power, the U.S. had been practicing the gospel of eugenics at home and spreading that message abroad, including Germany and, yes, among those who put Aktion T4 into action. As a colleague of mine has put it, “the demonic ideas about ‘race hygiene’ that the Third Reich put into practice were, at least initially, clearly marked ‘Made With Pride in the USA.’”

What’s also certain is that, as Black says, the eugenic impulse has never really gone away. It’s why Nobel Laureate James Watson, the co-discoverer of the double helix, has called “stupidity” a “disease” that should be eradicated through genetic research.

And it’s why more than 90 percent of children diagnosed with Down Syndrome in utero are never born. And it’s why Richard Dawkins calls not killing them “immoral.”

The temptation to “play God” whether for “the good of the race” or our own convenience is hard to resist. At the very minimum, you have to acknowledge its existence, which Germany has, but we, with a few exceptions, have not.

It is indeed a terrible, unjust and catastrophic thing when man opposes his will to the will of God.

Why are Pro-Abortion Protesters Always Taking their Clothes off?

Featured ImageA topless activist with Femen attacks Belgian Archbishop Andrè-Joseph Leonard, who is known for his strong pro-life and pro-family stance.

Why are pro-abortion protesters always taking their clothes off?

Jonathon van Maren Jonathon van Maren Follow Jonathon

I’ve seen a lot of bizarre responses to pro-life activism. There’s the crude picket signs, the illiterate chants, the flashes of violence, the incoherent threats that so often seem to involve used tampons, and even activists dressed up like giant genitalia.

But there is one phenomenon that never ceases to stagger me with its counterproductive stupidity and moral blindness: The increasing prevalence of “feminist” protestors, almost exclusively women, stripping down to “protest” something—usually protection for the pre-born or some other dissent from the totalitarian death cult of the Sexual Revolution.

When people ask me what the weirdest response to pro-life work is and I try to explain this phenomenon, they find it hard to believe. So do I. But yet it happens, time and time again.

The suicidal tendencies of modern-day feminism would be almost laughable if they were not so depressing.

One student stripped down and sat on a folding chair in front of our pro-life display at the University of British Columbia. A few protestors decided to protest the launch of our 2012 national tour by going topless. Then, at a presentation in London, Ontario, a bunch of pro-abortion protesters showed up at a counter-protest organized by the Canadian Auto Worker’s Union, sans clothing. And of course, at last year’s March for Life a topless Femen protestor flung herself at a remarkably composed Catholic bishop as he spoke to the crowd, shrieking “F*** your morals!”

You’d think such behaviour would attract ire rather than admiration. But this is 2014 and most of our municipal governments use our taxpayer’s cash basically to fund a day dedicated to that type of behaviour when the Pride Parade rolls around.

Follow Jonathon van Maren on Facebook

Instead, these women are now generally referred to as “brave.” Even the popular, but tiresomely far-left website Upworthy recently pushed a video with a street activist protesting harassment by misogynist pigs by standing on the street in her lingerie. (Little tip: Protesting the fact that some misogynists define you by your body by voluntarily showing them what they wanted to see in the first place isn’t defiance, it’s acquiescence. Protesting the fact that these guys aren’t treating you with dignity by acting like you have none is counter-productive. “That guy crudely suggested he wants to see me naked! Well, I’ll show him! By showing him exactly what he wants to see! Wait…”)

A bit of research into the infamous nude activist group Femen (“Our mission is protest, our weapon is bare breasts”) shows just how exploitative (inadvertent though it may sometimes be) this entire phenomenon is. In recent documentary the group’s leader, Viktor Svyatski, admitted that he had perhaps started the group to “get girls,” and that he carefully selected only the most attractive girls for his group. The documentary also revealed that Svyatski had described the Femen girls as “weak,” and was often verbally abusive with them.

Again, the suicidal tendencies of modern-day feminism would be almost laughable if they were not so depressing.

But the phenomenon of public nudity is also more than just incoherent protest—it is a way of forcing people to accept any and all manifestations of the Sexual Revolution. As I noted some time ago:  The public is now regularly subjected to crude and wildly exhibitionist “Gay Pride Parades” and “Slut Walks.” These are not considered to be optional festivals hosted by tiny minority groups. No, politicians who refuse to attend are labelled as heretics by the high priests of the New Moral Order, which is of course not an order at all, but a proud lack thereof.

Liberal activists don’t want the State to be outside the bedroom anymore, they want the State in the bedroom—loudly applauding the acts they see taking place, refraining from any judgment but one of approval, and paying for pills and bits of rubber to ensure that such acts do not go awry and result in reproduction or infection.

Your prayers are not welcome in public, but your privates are. The Emperor has no clothes, and is quite enjoying it—so long as the chilly breezes of moral truth don’t leak out of drafty cathedrals to cause discomfort.

There may be hope on the horizon, as indicated by the wild popularity of such books as Wendy ShaIit’s A Return to Modesty, as well as increasing disinterest in topless beaches in places like France. Some “feminists” have responded to such trends with irritation, grumbling that all the hard-won ground they had fought for is being spurned by the ungrateful brats of today. But perhaps, instead, many women are realizing that allowing men to freely objectify them in public is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Perhaps people have begun to rediscover a human value that was once enormously prized, but now almost forgotten: Dignity.

A Compassionate Society Prevents Suicide; it Doesn’t Promote it

A compassionate society prevents suicide; it doesn’t promote it

By Paul Russell, Director, HOPE

World suicide prevention day3Here in Australia another World Suicide Prevention Day has passed uneventfully. Suicide Prevention Australia made some touching TV advertisements which made me cringe at the pain felt by those left behind. Their anguish is something we too often forget.

As Lifeline, the suicide prevention organisation, puts it, “Suicide loss can impact on physical and mental health. It’s important people bereaved by suicide are treated with compassion and support. They may experience: shock, numbness, denial; searching for reasons ‘why?’; guilt; anger/blame; despair; listlessness; stigma and shame; loneliness and disconnection; depression; thoughts of suicide themselves.”

This message does not seem to be getting through to the media, however. An Australian Senator, David Leyonhjelm, published a libertarian argument for assisted suicide in OnLine Opinion shortly before Suicide Prevention Day. “It is fine to promote the treatment of depression and palliative care,” he wrote. “But it is not acceptable to claim their availability removes the right to make a choice. If free people own their own lives, they must be free to end them if they wish.:

This is reckless. All suicides are regrettable; all suicides should be abhorred and we should seek to ensure that suicide prevention measures recognise this.

If we accept that suicide for the elderly or the ill is appropriate, we send a mixed message about the value of life. Diminishing the resistance to all forms of suicide by accepting, as Leyonhjelm suggests, that some lives are “no longer worth living” implies that some suicides are good. This can never be the case in a compassionate society.

In its latest report the World Health Organisation says that one suicide occurs every 40 seconds around the world, with the highest rate amongst people aged 70 and over. This should make us think. Are we going to discriminate against the aged and infirmed in terms of suicide prevention; are we going to allow the former Nazi slogan of “life not worthy of life” to skew our objectives of reducing the number of suicides?

Newspapers often include the phone numbers of helplines at the foot of articles about suicide for those for those who are troubled by suicidal thoughts.

If we take Senator Leyonhjelm’s arguments seriously and legalise assisted suicide, should the editors add more advice? “If you think your suicidal thoughts are rational, phone Exit International. If you are old, sick or fear loneliness, ring this number for a doctor who will help you end it all.”

The only truly consistent approach to suicide is to seek to prevent it in all its forms. Anything less is a failure; a failure of imagination, commitment and of vulnerable people who deserve the protection of the law and the support of our society.
