Overview of Fetal Development

By Sarah Terzo

Editor’s note. This appeared at

Day 1: Sperm joins with ovum, to form one cell smaller than a grain of salt. The new life has inherited 23 chromosomes from each parent, 46 in all. This one cell contains the complex genetic blueprint for every detail of human development – the child’s sex, hair and eye color, height, skin tone

Days 3 – 4: The fertilized egg travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus, where the lining has been prepared for implantation

Days 5 – 9: During this time, the fertilized egg implants itself in the rich lining of the uterus and begins to draw nourishment.

Days 10 – 14: The developing embryo signals its presence through placental chemicals and hormones, preventing the mother from menstruating

Day 20: Foundations of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system are already established

Day 21: The heart begins to beat

Day 28: The back bone and muscles are forming. Arms, legs, eyes and ears have begun to show.

Day 30: At 1 month old, the embryo is 10,000 times larger than the original fertilized egg – and developing rapidly. The heart is pumping increasing quantities of blood through the circulatory system. The placenta forms a unique barrier that keeps the mother’s blood separate while allowing food and oxygen to pass through to the embryo.

day 37-40

Day 35:5 Fingers can be discerned on the hand. The eyes darken as pigment is produced.

Day 40: Brain waves can be detected and recorded

Week 6

Week 6: The liver is now taking over the production of blood cells, and the brain begins to control movement of muscles and organs. The mother is about to miss her 2nd period and has probably confirmed that she is pregnant.

Week 7: The embryo begins to move spontaneously. The jaw forms, including teeth buds in the gums. Soon the eyelids will seal to protect the embryo’s developing light-sensitive eyes, and will reopen at about the 7th month

week 7

Week 8: At a little more than an inch long, the developing life is now called a fetus – Latin for “young one” or “offspring.” Everything is now present that will be found in a fully developed adult. The heart has been beating for more than a month, the stomach produces digestive juices and the kidneys have begun to function. 40 muscle sets begin to operate in conjunction with the nervous system. The fetus’s body responds to touch, although the mother will not be able to feel movement until the 4th or 5th month.

8wks2d-footWeek 9: Fingerprints are already evident in the skin. The fetus will curl its fingers around an object placed in the palm of its hand.

Week 10: The uterus has now doubled in size. The fetus can squint, swallow and wrinkle its forehead.

Week 11: At this time, the fetus is about 2 inches long. Urination occurs. The face has assumed a baby’s profile, and muscle movements are becoming more coordinated

Week 12

Week 12: The fetus now sleeps, awakens and exercises its muscles energetically – turning its head, curling its toes, and opening and closing its mouth. The palm, when stroked, will make a tight fist. The fetus breathes amniotic fluid to help develop its respiratory system.

Week13: Fine hair has begun to grow on the head, and sexual differentiation has become apparent

14 weeks

Month 4: By the end of this month, the fetus is 8 to 10 inches in length and weighs a half pound or more. The mother will probably start to “show” now. The ears are functioning, and there is evidence that the fetus hears quite a bit: the mother’s voice and heartbeat as well as external noises. The umbilical cord has become an engineering marvel, transporting 300 quarts of fluids per day and completing the round-trip of fluids every 30 seconds.

Week 16- 4th month

Month 5: Half the pregnancy has now passed, and the fetus is about 12 inches long. The mother has definitely begun to feel movement by now. If a sound is especially loud or startling, the fetus may jump in reaction to it

Week 20 (5th month)

Month 6: Oil and sweat glands are functioning. The delicate skin of the growing baby is protected from the fetal waters by a special ointment called “vernix.” If the baby were born in this month and given the proper care, he would survive.

Month 7

Month 7: The baby now uses the 4 senses of vision, hearing, taste and touch. He can recognize his mother’s voice.

Month 8: The skin begins to thicken, with a layer of fat stored underneath for insulation and nourishment. Antibodies increasingly build up. The baby absorbs a gallon of amniotic fluid per day; the fluid is completely replaced every 3 hours.

Month 8

Month 9: Toward the end of this month, the baby is ready for birth. The average duration of pregnancy is 280 days from the 1st day of the mother’s last menstrual period, but this varies. Most babies (85% to 95%) are born somewhere between 266 and 294 days. By this time the infant normally weighs 6 to 9 pounds and his heart is pumping 300 gallons of blood per day. He is fully capable of life outside the womb.

A Gorgeous 4 Minute Video Journey from Infancy to Old Age

A gorgeous 4 minute video journey from infancy to old age

 By Dave Andrusko

Coming full circle: The artist skillfully demonstrates the poignancy of growing older in the four-minute video.

As we have observed dozens and dozens of times, arguably the best way to reach the undecided is to show them the marvelous complexity of the unborn child through her developmental journey and how what you see at fertilization is not only the same baby you will hold in your hands nine months later but also the same human being as she approaches the end of a long life.

(For me, I am still trying to find the video I saw decades ago that went from a very old person who “aged” in reverse, back to the union of ovum and sperm.)

The Daily Mail, bless its institutional heart, ran a piece today about the Korean artist and illustrator Seok Jeong Hyeon (better known as Stonehouse) which linked to a time-lapse video that traced a woman’s life from infancy to very old age, then finishing by flashing back to the drawing of a infant.

There are no words—none are needed–only gentle background music. Your eyes are riveted to this very brief (four minutes) tour of one person’s life.

Subtlety is the hallmark of this tour de force. The slightest changes, accumulating over time…

I couldn’t help thinking of our grandson who is not quite ten months old. The changes in him in just the last month are astonishing. He is almost unrecognizable from the baby we toted around just three months ago.

At the end, we see the proud grandmotherly figure, her eyes closed, her hands clasped as if in prayer. Then an abrupt reversal and we are transported back in time to this same woman when she was an infant, eyes closed, left hand almost posed under chin.

Take five minutes and go to

America Must Acknowledge its Own Eugenics Problem

America must acknowledge its own eugenics problem

 By Eric Metaxas
A few weeks ago, Germany dedicated a memorial to Nazism’s first victims: the disabled. The people of Germany have come to terms with their past.

The question now is, When will we?

The 80-foot glass panel unveiled in Berlin’s Tiergarten memorializes the estimated 70,000 sick and disabled people killed by the Third Reich as part of what was officially called Aktion T4 (and more informally, “Gnadentod,” which is German for “mercy death.”)

There was nothing merciful about it. Between 1939 and 1941, more than 5,000 children deemed “defective” were killed.

The program was expanded to include adults whose disabilities rendered them, in arguably the most demonic phrase ever uttered by man, lebensunwertes Leben, “life unworthy of life.” “Worth” was most often described in economic terms: a propaganda poster told ordinary Germans that caring for someone with “hereditary defects” cost 60,000 Reichsmarks, which came from ordinary Germans’ pockets.

There was opposition to the program, most notably from the Bishop of Münster, who denounced the program saying that “It is a terrible, unjust and catastrophic thing when man opposes his will to the will of God” and rhetorically asked if being poor and unproductive meant “that they have lost their right to live?”

Now, before you file this away under the headings “ancient history” and “The Nazis were one of a kind,” there are two things you need to know: the Nazis learned from us, and the worldview that drove them is not ancient history.

As Edwin Black, the author of “War Against the Weak” has documented, the ideas that led to Aktion T4 “began on Long Island and ended at Auschwitz . . . and yet never really stopped.”

Click “like” if you are PRO-LIFE!

By “Long Island” he means the Cold Spring Harbor Lab right here in New York, which was the driving force behind the eugenics movement in the United States. Between the turn of the twentieth century and our entry into World War II, America engaged in its own experiment in “racial hygiene.”

States prohibited marriage between the “fit” and “unfit,” often defining the latter category very broadly. They forcibly sterilized tens of thousands of people with the Supreme Court’s blessing. The number of those affected by what Chuck Colson once dubbed “Yankee Doodle Eugenics” will never be known with any certainty.

What is certain is that, by the time Hitler came to power, the U.S. had been practicing the gospel of eugenics at home and spreading that message abroad, including Germany and, yes, among those who put Aktion T4 into action. As a colleague of mine has put it, “the demonic ideas about ‘race hygiene’ that the Third Reich put into practice were, at least initially, clearly marked ‘Made With Pride in the USA.’”

What’s also certain is that, as Black says, the eugenic impulse has never really gone away. It’s why Nobel Laureate James Watson, the co-discoverer of the double helix, has called “stupidity” a “disease” that should be eradicated through genetic research.

And it’s why more than 90 percent of children diagnosed with Down Syndrome in utero are never born. And it’s why Richard Dawkins calls not killing them “immoral.”

The temptation to “play God” whether for “the good of the race” or our own convenience is hard to resist. At the very minimum, you have to acknowledge its existence, which Germany has, but we, with a few exceptions, have not.

It is indeed a terrible, unjust and catastrophic thing when man opposes his will to the will of God.

Why are Pro-Abortion Protesters Always Taking their Clothes off?

Why are pro-abortion protesters always taking their clothes off?

Jonathon van Maren Jonathon van Maren Follow Jonathon

I’ve seen a lot of bizarre responses to pro-life activism. There’s the crude picket signs, the illiterate chants, the flashes of violence, the incoherent threats that so often seem to involve used tampons, and even activists dressed up like giant genitalia.

But there is one phenomenon that never ceases to stagger me with its counterproductive stupidity and moral blindness: The increasing prevalence of “feminist” protestors, almost exclusively women, stripping down to “protest” something—usually protection for the pre-born or some other dissent from the totalitarian death cult of the Sexual Revolution.

When people ask me what the weirdest response to pro-life work is and I try to explain this phenomenon, they find it hard to believe. So do I. But yet it happens, time and time again.

The suicidal tendencies of modern-day feminism would be almost laughable if they were not so depressing.

One student stripped down and sat on a folding chair in front of our pro-life display at the University of British Columbia. A few protestors decided to protest the launch of our 2012 national tour by going topless. Then, at a presentation in London, Ontario, a bunch of pro-abortion protesters showed up at a counter-protest organized by the Canadian Auto Worker’s Union, sans clothing. And of course, at last year’s March for Life a topless Femen protestor flung herself at a remarkably composed Catholic bishop as he spoke to the crowd, shrieking “F*** your morals!”

You’d think such behaviour would attract ire rather than admiration. But this is 2014 and most of our municipal governments use our taxpayer’s cash basically to fund a day dedicated to that type of behaviour when the Pride Parade rolls around.

Instead, these women are now generally referred to as “brave.” Even the popular, but tiresomely far-left website Upworthy recently pushed a video with a street activist protesting harassment by misogynist pigs by standing on the street in her lingerie. (Little tip: Protesting the fact that some misogynists define you by your body by voluntarily showing them what they wanted to see in the first place isn’t defiance, it’s acquiescence. Protesting the fact that these guys aren’t treating you with dignity by acting like you have none is counter-productive. “That guy crudely suggested he wants to see me naked! Well, I’ll show him! By showing him exactly what he wants to see! Wait…”)

A bit of research into the infamous nude activist group Femen (“Our mission is protest, our weapon is bare breasts”) shows just how exploitative (inadvertent though it may sometimes be) this entire phenomenon is. In recent documentary the group’s leader, Viktor Svyatski, admitted that he had perhaps started the group to “get girls,” and that he carefully selected only the most attractive girls for his group. The documentary also revealed that Svyatski had described the Femen girls as “weak,” and was often verbally abusive with them.

Again, the suicidal tendencies of modern-day feminism would be almost laughable if they were not so depressing.

But the phenomenon of public nudity is also more than just incoherent protest—it is a way of forcing people to accept any and all manifestations of the Sexual Revolution. As I noted some time ago:  The public is now regularly subjected to crude and wildly exhibitionist “Gay Pride Parades” and “Slut Walks.” These are not considered to be optional festivals hosted by tiny minority groups. No, politicians who refuse to attend are labelled as heretics by the high priests of the New Moral Order, which is of course not an order at all, but a proud lack thereof.

Liberal activists don’t want the State to be outside the bedroom anymore, they want the State in the bedroom—loudly applauding the acts they see taking place, refraining from any judgment but one of approval, and paying for pills and bits of rubber to ensure that such acts do not go awry and result in reproduction or infection.

Your prayers are not welcome in public, but your privates are. The Emperor has no clothes, and is quite enjoying it—so long as the chilly breezes of moral truth don’t leak out of drafty cathedrals to cause discomfort.

There may be hope on the horizon, as indicated by the wild popularity of such books as Wendy ShaIit’s A Return to Modesty, as well as increasing disinterest in topless beaches in places like France. Some “feminists” have responded to such trends with irritation, grumbling that all the hard-won ground they had fought for is being spurned by the ungrateful brats of today. But perhaps, instead, many women are realizing that allowing men to freely objectify them in public is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Perhaps people have begun to rediscover a human value that was once enormously prized, but now almost forgotten: Dignity.

A Compassionate Society Prevents Suicide; it Doesn’t Promote it

A compassionate society prevents suicide; it doesn’t promote it

By Paul Russell, Director, HOPE

World suicide prevention day3Here in Australia another World Suicide Prevention Day has passed uneventfully. Suicide Prevention Australia made some touching TV advertisements which made me cringe at the pain felt by those left behind. Their anguish is something we too often forget.

As Lifeline, the suicide prevention organisation, puts it, “Suicide loss can impact on physical and mental health. It’s important people bereaved by suicide are treated with compassion and support. They may experience: shock, numbness, denial; searching for reasons ‘why?’; guilt; anger/blame; despair; listlessness; stigma and shame; loneliness and disconnection; depression; thoughts of suicide themselves.”

This message does not seem to be getting through to the media, however. An Australian Senator, David Leyonhjelm, published a libertarian argument for assisted suicide in OnLine Opinion shortly before Suicide Prevention Day. “It is fine to promote the treatment of depression and palliative care,” he wrote. “But it is not acceptable to claim their availability removes the right to make a choice. If free people own their own lives, they must be free to end them if they wish.:

This is reckless. All suicides are regrettable; all suicides should be abhorred and we should seek to ensure that suicide prevention measures recognise this.

If we accept that suicide for the elderly or the ill is appropriate, we send a mixed message about the value of life. Diminishing the resistance to all forms of suicide by accepting, as Leyonhjelm suggests, that some lives are “no longer worth living” implies that some suicides are good. This can never be the case in a compassionate society.

In its latest report the World Health Organisation says that one suicide occurs every 40 seconds around the world, with the highest rate amongst people aged 70 and over. This should make us think. Are we going to discriminate against the aged and infirmed in terms of suicide prevention; are we going to allow the former Nazi slogan of “life not worthy of life” to skew our objectives of reducing the number of suicides?

Newspapers often include the phone numbers of helplines at the foot of articles about suicide for those for those who are troubled by suicidal thoughts.

If we take Senator Leyonhjelm’s arguments seriously and legalise assisted suicide, should the editors add more advice? “If you think your suicidal thoughts are rational, phone Exit International. If you are old, sick or fear loneliness, ring this number for a doctor who will help you end it all.”

The only truly consistent approach to suicide is to seek to prevent it in all its forms. Anything less is a failure; a failure of imagination, commitment and of vulnerable people who deserve the protection of the law and the support of our society.

This is the true face of the Sexual Revolution. I apologize in advance.

Featured ImageFor too long we have been lied to about the sexual revolution. But now the mask is coming off, and the younger generations are recognizing that they have been sold a pack of lies.

This is the true face of the Sexual Revolution. I apologize in advance.

Jonathon van Maren Jonathon van Maren Follow Jonathon

It’s sobering and frustrating to consider that each and every time social conservatives raised the cultural alarm throughout the last five decades, pointing out that each new manifestation of the Sexual Revolution would lead to devastating consequences, they were written off with derisive laughter. They were accused of “provoking a moral panic,” or being “stuck in the past” or “too prudish.” The “slippery-slope” arguments of aging moralists were simply dogmatic hysterics to be ignored, if not mocked.

Unfortunately, the briefest of cultural overviews reveals that those who sounded the alarm were not crackpots, but prophets.

More than 25 new categories of sexually transmitted diseases (now referred to as “sexually transmitted infections” in order to make them sound less permanent)? Check.

Regular, government-funded nude and sexually explicit frolics in the streets of our biggest cities? Check (and if you don’t go, you’re a bigot).

Soaring rates of pornography addiction that has now ensnared the majority of our population and is creating an insidious new rape culture emanating from the screens of our computers and smartphones? Check.

Millions upon millions of tiny human beings suctioned, shredded, dismembered, and burned to death in the name of “freedom”—the human cost of allowing us to copulate without consequence? Check.

While there are many depressing trends that we need to fight, one trend that it is encouraging is the number of people who have realized that the Sexual Revolution sold them a pack of lies.

And I could go on. But these sobering facts beg a very good question—how can the pro-life movement expect to impact, much less change, a culture that has gone so far?

The answer to that question, as I’ve seen in hundreds of personal conversations with high school students and university students, is that the truth eventually seeps in.  There’s a reason that the current hyper-cynical, often nihilistic “Family Guy generation” responds so well to the pro-life message when we arrive at their high schools: When we tell them they’ve been lied to, they already know that. They’re just not sure how.

This is a generation that has never known what came before the Sexual Revolution. They weren’t part of the massive cultural shifts that resulted in the mainstreaming of pornography, hook-up culture, and abortion. It was simply bequeathed to them as their dubious inheritance.

And I say “dubious” for a reason—when you talk to a girl who had an abortion at 13 and was told by her mother or school nurse that it was “no big deal,” she knows she was lied to. When you tell a guy who has been hooked on porn since he was 10 and has never had a sexual experience that was not defined by that addiction that he’s been lied to, and that porn has changed him, he knows you’re telling the truth.

Teenagers dislike being lied to by adults, and when we confront them with reality, they realize very quickly that much of what they believed was nothing less than a failed cultural experiment.

Even mainstream media publications are slowly but surely admitting what social conservatives have said all along. Publications from The Atlantic to The New York Times to The Daily Mail are all admitting that pornography is warping the minds of the youth, creating situations in which girls are being coerced into sex acts they do not want to perform, impacting the ability of boys and girls to emotionally bond, and, bizarrely, rendering many boys and men sexually impotent.

The anti-porn movement has now driven an enormous wedge between those feminists and secularists who are honest about the damage porn has caused, and the Sexual Revolutionaries who are determined to defend every insidious and excessive manifestation of sexual “freedom.” After all, once we admit that certain behaviours are damaging and wrong, what’s stopping us from re-examining the whole bloody experiment?

The same goes for hook-up culture. Hannah Rosin of Slate, while ostensibly supportive of hook-up culture, was forced to admit in her recent book The End of Men that what many sexually-experienced university students wanted at the end of the day was just to go out on a romantic dinner date—an “experiment” that some of them had never tried.

TIME magazine released an article some time ago titled “The Hook-Up Culture Hurts Boys, Too”—tacitly admitting that the reality of hook-up culture hurting girls now just goes without saying.  And while the Sexual Revolutionaries accuse social conservatives of being “anti-sex,” it is their ideology that has profoundly undervalued, debased, and degraded this most intimate of human experiences.

In fact, when a professor named Chap Clark set out to find the story behind the statistics of sex in high schools, he was shocked by what he found: “I was surprised to realize that for most mid-adolescents the issue of sex had lost its mystique and has become almost commonplace. They have been conditioned to expect so much from sex and have been so tainted by overexposure… as one student told me, ‘sex is a game and a toy, nothing more.’”

While there are many depressing trends that we need to fight, one trend that it is encouraging is the number of people who have realized that the Sexual Revolution sold them a pack of lies. The controversial actor and comedian Gavin McInnis, for instance, realized that everything he’d been told about abortion was wrong when he saw his wife give birth. I interviewed him some time ago, and he told me that he’s not the only one:

I think that the liberal world is realizing that, as I did, that it just doesn’t add up.  And I think the world is catching on. You can check the internet, but that’s because the only place these liberal graduates, these liberalized graduates have to go, is the internet.  So they spill out, and lost logic is seeping in.  I was just at a conference, in Palm Beach this weekend, called Restoration, and there was a lot of old conservatives, and they were really negative, and they’ve given up.  And I just kept saying to them, ‘Guys, the truth is seeping in.  And the children in the information age, the really young kids, they don’t believe all this.’  And I also noticed it with abortion.  Like you have punks for the first time carrying pro-life signs, and you have bands like Flat Foot 56 being ‘Be a man, don’t be a quitter, just because the child’s within her.’ And I think that it’s changing.

In many ways, it is. When we approach the youth of our culture today, we’re not telling them what might happen as the result of the Sexual Revolution, we’re telling them what has happened—and how to avoid those consequences themselves. We now know that the free love utopia promised by hedonistic academics and drugged-up hippies was as illusory as their narcotic-induced hallucinations. All we have to do is show them the half-century report card and ask them questions—ask them if porn and hook-up culture and abortion has made them happy. Our society has confused pleasure with happiness for too long, and now that we’ve gotten a good look at the fall-out, many people are rediscovering age-old truths that our culture abandoned on the ill-fated whim of those who thought to justify their own desires.

And yet, the truth seeps in. I know I’ve quoted this poem before, but Arthur Hugh Clough says it so beautifully:

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

New study finds autism linked to fetal-contaminated vaccines

New study finds autism linked to fetal-contaminated vaccines

By Steve Weatherbe

As the incidence of autism has tripled since 2000, the Centers for Disease Control has denied any connections with vaccines, but one researcher says a new study backs up a little-known theory for the vaccine-autism link: that the rise in autism is due not to the use of metals in developing vaccines, but to the use of human fetal cell lines.

Theresa Deisher, the founder of Sound Choice Pharmaceutical Institute in Seattle, says its time for the CDC to wake up and look at all the data linking the autism hike to vaccines, especially Sound Choice’s new study showing a strong association between child autism and vaccines against chickenpox and Hepatitis A.

“Not only are the human fetal-contaminated vaccines associated with autistic disorder throughout the world, but also with epidemic childhood leukemia and lymphomas,” Deisher declared in a news release.

Vaccine researcher Katie Doan Courtesy of Katie Doan

She added that there are “a large number of publications” linking the HERV retrovirus “with childhood lymphoma,” and that widely-used chickenpox and Hepatitis A vaccines “manufactured with the fetal cell line WI-38 are contaminated with this retrovirus.”

Deisher’s team studied data from the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Western Australia and found that the big increases in the diagnoses of autism started in the early 1990s after the introduction of several vaccines containing human fetal DNA and retroviruses, and again after the expanded use of these vaccines.

Human fetal tissue is used to grow vaccines, says Katie Doan, the lead researcher on the study, because it triggers fewer auto-immune responses in the recipients than animal tissue.

But Doan told LifeSiteNews it is impossible to use fetal DNA without contamination with broken DNA strands, despite efforts at purification. When these are injected into children they can combine with the recipients’ genes to trigger autism, she explained.

Why does the CDC urge calm—or, some would say, complacency? Because it denies any actual increase. Though the CDC reports autism incidence increased from one in 150 American children in 2000 to one in 50 in 2013, they claim that what has grown is awareness, and hence the frequency of its diagnosis, as well as the growth of the diagnosis now called “autism spectrum disorders” (ASD) to include more and more conditions.

This belief is reinforced by a recent Australian synthesis of autism studies around the world showing virtually no increase since 1990. Instead the study states that the increase in ASD diagnoses results from reclassification of behaviors previously associated with mental illness and other conditions.

But the Sound Choice study factored out increased awareness by concentrating on one of the narrowest, oldest, and best-known components of ASD called infantile autism, whose criteria have remain unchanged.

It also addressed another prominent explanation for the increase in autism diagnoses, which does accept that autism itself is really on the rise, but attributes it to the increasing age of fathers (and therefore the increasing incidence of defective DNA in offspring).

But the data on aging paternity does not match the increase in autism, whereas the increase in fetal-DNA contaminated vaccines does.

Autism is caused by a combination of factors, with about half comprising genetic defects either generated during development of the unborn child or inherited from parents, including auto-immune deficiencies and mutations.

Click “like” if you are PRO-LIFE!

While the CDC rejects any link between vaccines and autism, late last month one of its scientists admitted that in 2004 a CDC research team deliberately omitted data from a study indicating just such a link. Senior epidemiologist William Thompson admitted data showing a correlation between the MMR vaccine and autism was deliberately left out of the study. “I regret that my coauthors and I omitted statistically significant information,” he said.

But the CDC does no research on any autism-vaccine link and according to Doan has lately ceased reporting annual vaccination numbers that would enable further research.

“The CDC has known for decades about the dangers of insertional mutagenesis by using fetal cell lines and yet they chose to ignore it,” asserted Deisher. “These discoveries should generate an immediate investigation by [Federal Drug Administration] officials if not an outright ban on the use of fetal cell lines as subtrates for vaccine production.”

Sound Choice Pharmaceutical Institute is a non-profit arm of Dr. Deisher’s AVM Biotech, which develops products and methods to improve the effectiveness of adult stem cell treatments, in conformity with Catholic moral teaching.

Dear Son, It Was An Honor To Hold You By Tom Riles

Editor’s note. This was originally posted on

Dear Son,

For anybody that is going through a situation like this, know that you are not alone.

I held you on Friday night for the first and last time ever. It was one of the saddest, proudest, most heartbreaking, and beautiful moments of my life. It was an honor to hold you.

I’m proud of you, son. Even though you only made it halfway through the pregnancy, you have left a mark on our family that will last forever. Because of you, I love my wife more than ever. Because of you, I feel a stronger connection with my kids than ever. When I hug them, I feel your presence.

Sadly, I’ll always remember the phone call last week from your mom when she told me that we lost you. I was home with your brother and sister, and I was in shock. Your pregnancy seemed to be the smoothest and most healthy one that your mom had ever had. I did my best to comfort her on the phone, and then we grieved together when you both got home. Our kids didn’t let us cry too much, though, because they kept requesting snacks, more snacks, and more snacks after that.

Usually Friday is a day that I look forward to, but not last Friday. I never shave on Fridays, but this time I did. This was the only day that I would ever hold you… I had to look my best. When we checked into the hospital at 8 a.m., it was a dark, dreary, and rainy day, just like the feeling in our hearts.

Your mom took medication to start the labor process, and over the next 10 hours, she showed her love and devotion to you as we neared your birth. By the way, your mom is the most incredible and beautiful person I have ever met. I’m so lucky to be with her and call her my wife.

At 8:35 p.m. on Friday, February 28th, you were born. Even though there was no life in your beautiful body, you were full of love, heart, and courage.

Scotty, that is your older brother, Tommy, blowing out a candle celebrating your life.

Your mom held you, and then it was my turn. I felt both happy and devastated to be holding my second son in the palm of my hands. We cried. We told you about your brother and sister. We visualized you running through open fields somewhere, free, happy, and full of life. We sang to you. After singing the final line of “Silent Night” to you… “Sleep in heavenly peace…” we knew that it was time to say goodbye.

You were with us for way too short of a time, but you will be remembered forever. We named you Scotland Bansley Riles, and your mom and I will bring your ashes with us someday when we travel to Scotland. Usually we don’t travel with our kids (they’re a little too crazy), but we want to show you the world.

Our precious Scotty… I miss you more than I’ve ever missed anything. We love you. We will honor you. We will be better parents and people because of you. Thank you.

Embellishing the Truth….about Abortion

Dear Friend:

A week ago today I fell off my bike and broke my arm. It’s a pretty bad break resulting in surgery, so you can imagine all the doctors and nurses that I’ve had to talk to about how I broke my arm. It feels really silly at my age to say I fell off my bike, so when I could get away with it I did embellish the story a little. My grandson thinks I was trying to out run a bear! But no matter how the story gets told, the fact remains that I fell off my bike and broke my arm.

I hear embellished truth every day when it comes to abortion. They call it a “woman’s choice” or “reproductive health”.   The real truth is that there’s nothing healthy about an abortion just like there’s nothing healthy about a broken arm, no matter how much you embellish the story. When I left the hospital I still had my arm and an x-ray photo of how they fixed it.  When a woman leaves the abortion facility she leaves behind a dead child and an ultrasound photo of the live child she probably never looked at before the child was killed. The child is dead: no funeral, no memorial service, no burial.

No matter how you embellish the story I still have a broken arm from falling off my bike. No matter how she embellishes her story she still killed her child. How can this possibly be legal or right? Because I’m in a lot of pain, I’m taking some strong drugs, stayed at home all week and have had a lot of time to think. It hasn’t made it easier. In fact it’s really overwhelmed me how much work we have to do to fix this tragedy. How long will it take for our work to be done?  I hate saying it again, but our work goes on….

8 Things “After Tiller” Left Out, Responding to PBS’s “Humanizing” of Late-Term Abortion

8 Things “After Tiller” Left Out, Responding to PBS’s “Humanizing” of Late-Term Abortion

by Kelsey Hazzard | Washington, DC | | 9/3/14 9:40 AM

Social media is erupting this week in the latest abortion-related controversy: PBS’s decision to air “After Tiller” on Labor Day.

“After Tiller” is a documentary that examines the motivations and difficulties of four late-term abortionists—LeRoy Carhart, Warren Hern, Susan Robinson, and Shelley Sella—and some of their patients, in an attempt to contextualize late-term abortion and humanize the doctors.

pbs2There is not much to add that hasn’t already been said on other pro-life websites, blogs, and Twitter (#AfterTiller), but here’s a list of simple facts that further ‘contextualize’ the procedure and those who perform it.

  1. In the film, we are told that third-trimester abortions are less than one percent of all abortions. What we are not told is that one percent = approximately 10,000 babies in the U.S. per year.
  2. Most of the pregnant patients featured in the film were carrying babies with severe abnormalities or disabilities, but in reality, Tiller himself admitted that this situation constituted only about eight percent of his abortions. So that means every year these doctors abort about 9,200 healthy, viable, developed babies with no health complications whatsoever.1
  3. At least four women have died from legal second- and third-trimester abortions in the past two years.
  4. Carhart has been responsible for eight medical emergencies (that we know of) since March 2012, including the death of Jennifer Morbelli last year.
  5. Carhart has described babies in the womb dying as being “like meat in a Crock-pot.”
  6. Former Tiller employee Tina David said of Sella: “[The] baby came out, and it was moving. I don’t know if it was alive or if it was nerves, I have no clue. But Dr. Sella looked up right away at me and took a utensil and stabbed it, right here, and twisted. And then it didn’t move anymore.”
  7. Former Tiller employee Luhra Tivis has said that she was trained to answer the phone like a salesperson marketing a product, selling abortion to the caller. Tivis also described seeing Tiller carrying a heavy cardboard box full of dead babies into his crematorium and smelling the flesh as it burned.
  8. Robinson was shocked when she realized a baby she’d thought to be 32 weeks from the ultrasound was actually closer to 37 weeks when he or she was aborted.
Hard to humanize all that.[1] Please note that I am not arguing that abortion is more justifiable for babies with disabilities than without. The film features some women who had received diagnoses that their baby would die would die in utero or shortly after birth, or that their child would be in pain for his or her entire life, leading viewers to believe that such extreme circumstances constitute the majority of late-term abortions, when that is not true.
