Electric Stimulation Treats Severe Brain Damage

Electric Stimulation Treats Severe Brain Damage

It appears there may be a way to improve the condition of patients in a persistent unconscious and minimally conscious states. From the New Scientist story:

“People who have been in a minimally conscious state for weeks or years have been temporarily roused using mild electrical stimulation. Soon after it was applied to their brains, 15 people with severe brain damage showed signs of consciousness, including moving their hands or following instructions using their eyes. Two people were even able to answer questions for 2 hours before drifting back into their previous uncommunicative state.

“’I don’t want to give people false hope – these people weren’t getting up and walking around – but it shows there is potential for the brain to recover functionality, even several years after damage,’ says Steven Laureys at the University of Liège in Belgium, who led the research.”

This could mean better diagnosis:

“The worst scenario, he says, is that the person has some aspects of awareness but they have been misdiagnosed as persistently vegetative. Brain stimulation could now be added to the tests used to make that diagnosis. It’s an important distinction – someone in a vegetative state is thought to be unable to feel pain.

“Someone with minimal consciousness can feel pain and possibly emotions, too. ‘The key thing is getting the diagnosis right, that’s the game-changer,’ says Fins.”

Gee, treating these disabled people as people rather than as “dead” or human “nonpersons” for organ harvesting. What a concept.

It’s Almost as if the Newborn is Saying, “Don’t—Whatever You Do–Separate Me from Mom!”

It’s almost as if the newborn is saying, “Don’t—whatever you do–separate me from Mom!”

 By Dave Andrusko

babyandmom4Oh, my goodness, my thanks and gratitude go out to Rebekah O’Brien. She passed along to her readers a link to a video that will melt your heart: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMDfcCL-_Sw.

What do we see in just under a minute and a half?

A mom has just delivered her baby boy, which, of course, really resonated with me. Our first grandson (and second grandchild) joined the Andrusko clan last November.

The camera angle is from behind and you see the baby gently holding on to his mom’s face. He is crying but after a few seconds he is at peace.

We see the little one has placed his right hand across her brow, his left cheek pressed up against his Mom’s left cheek. Silence. The baby is calm, quiet, secure.

But then the staff starts to take him away. The volume control goes to maximum . Born with healthy lungs, it’s almost as if he is screaming, “Don’t—whatever you do–separate me from Mom!”

As long as the staff allows him to stay in his refuge, all is well. His left hand begins to move toward her face. Added assurance? For this moment at least, all is well in the universe.

Clearly the doctors and nurses are fascinated by what they are witnessing. When it’s time to move the baby (presumably for a bath), he lets everyone know that this change of locale is by their wish, not his.

I know, I know. Pro-lifers are tender-hearted almost (as if that were possible) to a fault. Someone else looking at the same video might dismiss it as…whatever. Reflect, instinct, a response to cold.

Not us.

Newly Crowned Miss Pennsylvania, Valerie Gatto, was Conceived in Rape

Newly crowned Miss Pennsylvania, Valerie Gatto, was conceived in rape

BY SUSANNA ROSE

  • Mon Mar 03, 2014 14:22 EST

March 3, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – When the newly crowned Miss Pennsylvania, Valerie Gatto, was in third grade, she found out the difficult truth that she had been conceived when her mother was raped at knifepoint.

Gatto’s mother was only 19 years old when the attack occurred.  Her assailant had plans to murder her as well, but says those plans were thwarted when a bright light from an unknown source appeared. This light gave Gatto’s mother the ability to get up and run away before he could do further harm to her.  Gatto says, “I like to think of that light as my mother’s and (my) guardian angel.”

In a recent interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Gatto says her mother always told her, “I was her light.”

Soon after the attack, Gatto’s mother discovered she was pregnant.  According to an interview with Gatto for CBS Pittsburgh, her mother never considered abortion.

She did have plans to put her daughter up for adoption, hoping she could be given a more stable life elsewhere.  But, after Gatto was born, her grandmother reminded her daughter that God does not give us more than we can handle.  She convinced Gatto’s mother to raise her little girl herself.

Thus, at 20 years of age, Gatto’s mother lay aside plans to attend law school in order to raise her daughter.  Gatto grew up living with her mother and maternal grandparents in a stable, loving home.  She says she never felt as though her mother regretted her decision to keep her.

Gatto was raised going to church each Sunday and, as a result, faith became an important part of her life.  According the Gatto’s website, her mother was put in charge of the food pantry at their church, delivering food baskets for those in need.  She would bring Gatto with her and this service driven life encouraged Valerie to volunteer in various capacities as well.

She became involved in projects such as clothing drives, giving gifts to children in hospital care, and Operation Dear Abby, which gives cards to U.S. military members stationed overseas.  Gatto says she has learned to live her life “looking at how to turn a negative into a positive.”

Gatto went on to pursue higher education and graduated with honors from the University of Pittsburgh.  Since then, she has continued serving in various capacities around her community such as helping at a local food bank and donating clothes to an organization that empowers women.

Additionally, her mother’s story of rape and survival has given her a deep desire to help other women learn how to protect themselves from sexual assault.  “I hope to make a difference and shed a light on sexual assault and rape for young women,” Gatto says.

As she anticipates using her platform to inspire many with her life and story, Gatto firmly believes God has put her on this earth for a special reason.  “I knew God put me here for a purpose, and he’s the reason my mother and I were saved,“ she says. “I want to do him proud and my family proud.  If I did just sit there and think, ‘Why did this happen?’ or ‘Does my father know I exist?’ and be scared and let the fear of the unknown stop me, I wouldn’t be living my life. He put me here to do great things, and I’m not going to let that stop me.”

Newborn Baby in This Viral Video Refuses to Let Go of His Mother!

Newborn baby in this viral video refuses to let go of his mother!

A video of a newborn baby refusing to let go of its mother has gone viral, and it’s no wonder why.

The video captures a phenomenally powerful moment. I cannot imagine anyone not being moved by it.

Immediately after watching this video, one of the first people that came to my mind was Wendy Davis, who filibustered for 11 hours to protect late-term abortion, to protect the act of killing a baby just like the one in this video.

We’ve seen the photos of Gosnell’s victims, we know the reality of the horror of late-term abortion.

But we know that morally speaking, late-term abortion is no worse than first-trimester abortion. There is something about this clip of a newborn baby, mere minutes outside of the womb, so dependent upon its mother, so attached to its mother that it simply cannot and will not let go of her face, that we see the evidence. We see that the unmatched bond between mother and child is something that doesn’t begin at the moment of birth. It begins much, much earlier, and simply continues to grow in intensity until the moment of birth.

I am astonished, and I believe you will be too.

Debunking Rolling Stone’s “Seven Most Common Lies About Abortion” (part one)

Debunking Rolling Stone’s “Seven most common lies about abortion” (part one)

 By Kristi Burton Brown

rolling-stone-logoRolling Stone’s Lauren Rankin recently wrote about “outright lies told by abortion opponents.” She claimed the goal of these “lies” is to “dissuade women out of seeking safe and legal abortion care.”

But just because something is “legal” does not make it wrong to convince someone not to do it. In Kenya, rape is widespread and treated as culturally legal. Would it be wrong to convince men to stop raping women?

Whenever an action violates basic, human rights, anyone can – and should – attempt to persuade people not to participate. Abortion violates the most basic human right – the right to live and remain alive without suffering cruel and undeserved harm. Civilized people should persuade others against abortion.

Abortion is neither “safe” nor “care.” When one human being walks out of an appointment dead, and often torn to pieces, it’s hardly safe. When the other human being is all too often forced, pressured, and physically harmed, it’s hardly care. Abortion cannot be our standard of safe care for women and babies.

Let’s take a look at Rolling Stone’s seven “outright lies”:

1. Abortion causes breast cancer.

Rankin cites 2003 and 2009 studies, claiming that there is no causal relationship between induced abortion (IA) and breast cancer. However, there are separate studies – released in 2013 – that demonstrate a close link between abortion and breast cancer. As Barbara Kay writes for National Post:

“The researchers from the Tianjiin Medical University Cancer Hospital point to China’s one-child program, which has seen 336 million babies aborted since the 1980s, as the culprit. Their findings…pegged one IA to a 44% rise in risk of breast cancer, two IAs to 76% and three to 89%. …

“A study in the Indian Journal of Community Medicine in May found a six-fold greater risk of breast cancer among Indian women with a history of IA as compared to non-aborting women.”

Kay notes that the governments of China and India are supportive of abortion: such research is embarrassing to them. The countries have no reason to release such research if it were not indeed true.

2. Abortion causes infertility.

Rankin’s own link to the Mayo Clinic disputes her claim. Read what the Mayo Clinic actually says, and you can see for yourself that abortion can, at times, cause serious pregnancy complications as well as possible infertility.

Pro-lifers aren’t claiming that every woman who has an abortion will be infertile. Instead, we believe in letting women know the facts. Abortion does carry the risk of future serious complications (some of which risk the mother’s life) and possible infertility.

Additionally, it’s rather disingenuous for Rankin to call the Guttmacher Institute a “nonpartisan organization,” seeing as it was founded by a former Planned Parenthood President and a former Vice President of the American Eugenics Society, Alan F. Guttmacher.

But even Planned Parenthood admits that abortion can result in infertility:

“Infections can occur from an abortion,” PPE writes. “At worst the infection can become a case of endometriosis (the pelvic area becomes inflamed) and the uterus has to be removed surgically.

3. Most women regret having an abortion.

There are a number of problems with Rankin’s claims in this section. First, the study she cites is a Guttmacher Institute study (bias noted above). Second, the study was conducted on women one week after they had an abortion (or were denied an abortion). Third, even the Guttmacher Institute’s summary of the study is more honest than Rankin’s. Guttmacher admits that many women have “mixed emotions” and that women can experience regret and relief at the same time.

Admittedly, it’s very hard to measure what “most” women feel after having an abortion. “Most” is often a subjective measurement. However, take this iReport by CNN, in which they asked their readers whether they had had an abortion and how they felt about it. The majority of women wrote in with stories of deep grief and regret. Here are additional stories [www.teenbreaks.com/abortion/girlswhoaborted.cfm?start=35] from teens demonstrating regret after abortion.

Most major events in life require much more time than one singular week to accurately gauge a person’s feelings about it. It’s easy to immediately feel relief when any “problem” is “solved.” But when time passes, true feelings set in – especially when people realize they may have been lied to, that they were given inaccurate information that led to their decision, or when they realize that there were other valid options they were not encouraged to explore – options that wouldn’t have included the permanent, irreversible death of their own child.

Do You Think it’s Suitable for children?

Susan B. Anthony List
Pro-life Friend —

Not only does Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards believe that life doesn’t begin until delivery… you won’t believe what her organization thinks is suitable for children once they are born.

You see, news has just broken that Planned Parenthood has a video up encouraging teens to participate in bondage and sadomasochism – all a part of their “Naked Notion”

YouTube channel for teenagers, which has over 1.8 million views.

The video is titled “Getting Kinky” (BDSM 101) and celebrates “National Kink Month” by talking about bondage and sadomasochism as a “consensual power exchange.”

Now, here’s where it gets worse: Planned Parenthood is producing these videos with YOUR tax dollars… which now totals over HALF A BILLION annually. They also abort more than 330,000 unborn children a year!

>>> Help us fight back: Contribute $10, $25, $75 or more right now to the SBA List’s aggressive plan to kick Harry Reid out of power so we can end all taxpayer funding of this abhorrent abortion business.

The news of this disgusting targeting of teens comes during the same week that Planned Parenthood announced it is going to spend an unprecedented $18 million this year to protect its pro-abortion majority in the U.S. Senate…

Why? Because they know their control of the U.S. Senate is on the brink – and therefore, their $500+ million in taxpayer funding.

They know what we know: If we can kick Harry Reid out of power in November, he will be replaced by a pro-life Majority Leader committed to ending taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.

>>> The stakes are high: It is time to end Planned Parenthood’s indoctrination of our children – invest right now in our plan to kick Harry Reid out of power and replace him with a pro-life Majority Leader.

Right now, we have begun hiring field directors in our target states, and are completing our opposition research for our highly effective and targeted voter mobilization campaign.

While we won’t be able to match Planned Parenthood dollar-for-dollar, election analysts agree that pro-abortion Senate Democrats are in trouble – if pro-life voters turn out in droves this November.

And we know that if we can simply expose their radical abortion records to the voters – especially pro-life voters who don’t normally vote in off-year elections – we can WIN and defeat Planned Parenthood.

The message is pretty compelling. The pro-abortion Senators we are targeting support:

  • The unprecedented expansion of taxpayer-funded abortion on-demand under Obamacare
  • Unrestricted abortion up to the moment of birth, even on fully-developed babies that can feel pain
  • Half a billion dollars in taxpayer funding to abortion giant Planned Parenthood

>>> We CAN defeat Planned Parenthood this November: Donate $10, $25, $75 or more right now to help fund our aggressive campaign plan.

Remember, if we can take back the Senate this November, we come one step closer to ending taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, and their disgusting indoctrination of our children… not to mention their killing of them.

Let’s win this.

Ohio Right to Life Public Relations Manager presents the right to life to 8th graders.
COLUMBUS, Ohio–Recently, Ohio Right to Life expanded its Urban Outreach Initiative in two ways: 1.) presenting the right to life to inner-city Catholic school students, and 2.) distributing literature in minority communities with local high school students. Both efforts fall under Ohio Right to Life’s broader goal of “planting the pro-life seed” with minority youth and adults.

“The purpose of the presentations and lit-drops is two-fold: to provide facts and to provide hope,” said Katie McCann, Public Relations Manager at Ohio Right to Life. “We want to give students the facts about abortion, particularly about abortion in the African American community–but we also want them to know that abortion is not the end of the story.”

Students engage in Ohio Right to Life’s pro-life presentation.
Ohio Right to Life recently worked with high school students to distribute literature in Berwick, a neighborhood on the east side of Columbus. They distributed literature in the Cumberland Ridge neighborhood at the end of February. McCann has also presented on the right to life at All Saints Academy, her middle school alma mater.

“We are eager to share the pro-life message with more students, and would welcome the chance to speak with all teachers and principals about this opportunity,” said McCann.

Teachers and principals who would like to learn more about this initiative should contact Katie McCann at 614.547.0099, ext. 304 or by email at kmccann@ohiolife.org.

Ohio Right to Life distributed 500 pieces of literature in the fall.
Students from Bishop Hartley and St. Francis DeSales high schools distribute pro-life literature at the end of February.

Founded in 1967, Ohio Right to Life, with more than 45 local chapters, is Ohio’s oldest and largest grassroots pro-life organization. Recognized as the flagship of the pro-life movement in Ohio, ORTL works through legislation and education to promote and defend innocent human life from conception to natural death.

Join Pope Francis — And the Whole Church — In Praying for Families!

JOIN POPE FRANCIS
— AND THE WHOLE CHURCH–
IN PRAYING FOR FAMILIES!

March 3, 2014

Pope Francis wrote a letter to families of the whole world on February 2.

He has a request for you and for me.

He asked us to pray for families
And for the Church as she defends families
and prepares for a world meeting of bishops on this topic.

I don’t have to tell you about the attacks on the family.

It starts with abortion, which destroys the family’s weakest member, the child in the womb, and distorts the very nature of the family, which is called to be the sanctuary of life.

And the attack continues with attempts to redefine marriage, to mock the notion of lifelong fidelity, and on and on…

The Pope is calling bishops from around the world to gather in October in Rome.

This special meeting, called a “Synod,” is a special act of the Church to show how important a topic is and to examine and strengthen the Church’s response to a particular problem.

I have composed a special prayer that I am inviting you and your family to say on a regular basis, so that we can let Pope Francis know that we are responding to his urgent request.

Along with the prayer, you will be able to read the whole letter from the Pope, which is not long. Let me quote from it briefly.

He says that the upcoming Synod of Bishops “is dedicated in a special way to you, to your vocation and mission in the Church and in society; to the challenges of marriage, of family life, of the education of children; and the role of the family in the life of the Church.”

As you know, one of the key challenges to family life is the pro-abortion mindset that afflicts our world. Abortion destroys the family, not only because it kills its weakest members, but because the aftereffects of abortion destroy the marriage relationship, weaken parenting skills, and can make it physically impossible to have more children in the future.

As my long-time friend Dr. Philip Ney — a child psychiatrist — has often said, nothing in the world today is more destructive of the family than abortion!

And two other people with whom I had the privilege to speak about these matters — Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Pope John Paul II — both on their way to sainthood — said the same thing.

Mother Teresa said,

“The greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”

And Pope John Paul II wrote a marvelous document on the family which you will be able to see when you follow the links below.

So let’s respond together to this special moment in the Church, when Pope Francis makes this request:

“I ask you, therefore, to pray intensely to the Holy Spirit, so that the Spirit may illumine the Synodal Fathers and guide them in their important task.”

And as the Pope makes clear, the task isn’t just theirs; it’s ours!

So please click here to find and download the prayer for families and to let us — and Pope Francis — know that you will say it regularly!

Sincerely,
